View Full Version : Better all around lens? 50mm or 60mm?
Carlo R. Lopez 06-27-2006, 06:55 PM guys im trying to single one of these nikon lenses for my upcoming purchase. deciding between the 50mm f1.4, f1.8 or the 60mm macro. ive tried the 50 f1.8 and im quite impressed, havent tried the 1.4 or 60mm. some inputs and suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
dindin_lagdameo 06-27-2006, 07:00 PM I own both and I use them for different purposes. 60mm for macro... and the 50mm for low light and sometimes for portrait.
I love my 60mm more since it has macro capabilities. But, I don't use it for anything else. The 50mm, on the other hand, is what I use when I want to be able to shoot low light/indoor where I can't use a flash... e.g. churches (while there are people praying)... and I bring the 50mm when I can't bring a long lens...
HTH...

hehe so i get both:) ive heard people using the 60mm for portraits too though. if thats the case the 60 seems like the obvious choice. the 50 though is such a bargain imho. can you give certain examples wherein 50 shines over the 60?

Some people do like using the 60mm for portraits. The only downside being it's so sharp that it is unflattering for certain subjects. Like if you were taking a pic of an elderly woman, all her wrinkles will show. The advantage of the 50mm over the 60mm is it will definitely be better for low light if using flash is not an option (f/1.8 or 1.4 vs 2.8).:)
tj_parpan 06-27-2006, 11:33 PM If all around, then the 60mm would be it. It's decent enough at 2.8 and can do both portrait and macro. But consider the type of macro you'll be shooting at 60mm. That means you need to be closer to your subject.

When i'm using the nikon, 60 will always be included on my list. I can get away without the 50. 2.8 will be okay when you need to shoot portrait with the 60. Better if you have the 85 for portraits.:)
kengo 07-03-2006, 02:41 PM 50mm F1.8 and a set of extention tube, total cost way less than a 60mm macro and you get a lens good for portraits, low light and macro.

Ray_Garcia 07-06-2006, 12:09 PM I agree with kengo, the 50mm 1.8 would be a good choice. It's far cheaper than a 60mm macro, it's very sharp and lit's low-light ability is a sure winner.
rosalie_gomez 07-06-2006, 12:58 PM @ken, ray
I agree the 50mm 1.8 is the way to go if one has no intention of shooting macro but if one plans to shoot macro, and can afford it, I say get the 60mm instead. :)
Carlo R. Lopez 07-06-2006, 01:03 PM guys i choose the 50mm 1.4d instead. i got a good deal on one:) picking it up today. im eyeeing the 85mm 1.4d as well. nice to dream
Arnell Umali 07-06-2006, 01:43 PM guys i choose the 50mm 1.4d instead. i got a good deal on one:) picking it up today.
Good for you. You'll enjoy it. Just remember that its the equivalent of a short tele on an aps-c camera. The normal lens equivalent for that camera is a 35mm.
kengo 07-06-2006, 07:34 PM @ken, ray

Definitely a dedicated macro is the better route if you plan to shoot macro very often, but in his case, he is looking for a better all-around and not just a macro lens. :)

shot a couple of hundred shots, this lens is not as easy as it seems.
Michael G. Viudez 04-02-2008, 10:40 PM i'm also planning to get the 50mm 1.8D but dunno if it will autofocus with my d40 can anyone enlighten me, thanks:)
kipaguirre 04-02-2008, 11:31 PM Hi, Michael!
No 50mm lenses of Nikon are AF-S so they won't focus on the D40! If you want a 50mm that autofocuses with the D40, you can check the sigma equivalent out! I just don't know how good it is though..:D
denmark dolores 04-02-2008, 11:49 PM i'm also planning to get the 50mm 1.8D but dunno if it will autofocus with my d40 can anyone enlighten me, thanks:)
It won't AF on a D40, I think on a D80 it will.
But, the sharpness of a 50mm is worth doing the manual focus. :)
Michael G. Viudez 04-03-2008, 09:56 PM @kip and denmark,
thanks for the info, eventhough it wont auto focus im still considering getting 1 coz ive heard only good reviews regarding this lens and i may still use it on my next body... hopefully a d300,
thanks again:)
einsteinyong 04-03-2008, 10:41 PM Hi, Im just new here and a newbie in photography. can somebody explain to me the "mm" thing in different lenses? what is the difference between "18mm - 55mm" and "14mm - 24mm" and such? is it refering to the distance it can focus?
"sorry im ingnorant at this moment" and I am learning step by step with the help of this forum.
Thanks
kipaguirre 04-03-2008, 11:05 PM Anytime, Michael! I actually bought one a few weeks ago! No regrets whatsoever although I'm seriously saving my cash now for the next two weeks.. :-s Hahaha!
Michael G. Viudez 04-03-2008, 11:15 PM i saw your photos you took with your 50mm, and really convinced me to get one, btw how much did you get your 50mm,
thanks

Hi Einstein. Those figures refer to the focal length of the lens. Here's a definition: http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/key=focal+length. Hope that helps. :)
kipaguirre 04-04-2008, 12:21 AM I got mine for SGD180! I'm not so sure how much it is in Hidalgo though.. I got it here in Singapore and I'm pretty sure i could have gotten it cheaper in Sim Lim but the salespeople there intimidate me! :-s Hahaha! The exchange rate for SGD to PHP last time I checked is around 27 PHP to 1 SGD! So the 50mm cost me around P4,860.
kengo 04-04-2008, 01:50 AM The drawback of the 50mm (either 1.8 or 1.4) is its very prone to flare and ghosting, while the 60mm Micro seems very resitant to it. So when shoot extreme backlit situations, the 60mm is a better choice. I always though that it could be that the wide aperture of lenses in general was the culprit, since my 85mm f/1.8 acts similarly, but Canon's 50mm f/1.8 handles flare and ghosting nicely.

alov.a.capati 04-04-2008, 02:16 AM id go wid the 50 1.8.. versatile and its cheap.
Henry_Anima_II 04-04-2008, 09:19 AM I have 50mm f/1.8 and I love the lens. It's manual focus on my D40 but the photos I took using the said lens are superb especially in low light places...
Teejay_Garcia 04-04-2008, 09:31 AM Q: Better all around lens? 50mm or 60mm?
A: the one that can focus closer.

einsteinyong 04-04-2008, 10:29 AM How about the difference between F1.4, F1.8?
