some have dust problems with the lens because of the zooom action and the lack of weather sealing.

Future compatibility. For us, 1D and 5D owners, we can't use it as much as we wanted to.

this is one fantastic lens. the only issue for us is it's not 1.3x and full frame compatible. so we didn't get it. 16-35L, 24-70L is another option if you don't want EF-S.

The 17-55 is one heck of a lens. Its sharp wide open and covers your wide-to-normal focal ranges. With IS and 2.8 opening, you can just about make use of one-tenth of a second in shutter speed if you're the 'available light" kind of person. Works great for events too.

Its EF-S though so its meant for cropped sensors. But by the way things are going, Canon wont be abandoning their EF-S line up (hopefully).

Optically this lens is L-grade though its build is average. You can read informative threads on the item at dpreview.

I've had mine for about four months now and have so far no dust-related issues.

The EF-S 17-55 IS USM is a great lens.

Here's my opinion,

I wouldn't put too much stock in Full Frame (FF) compatibility because there will always be 1000 crop sensor users to every 1 FF user. This lens will ALWAYS have a market for it and there's gonna be someone willing to take it off your hands IF you actually outgrow it by going full frame.

Too often I've seen hobbyists factor in future compatibility in their purchase decisions for full frame but whine at the asking price. US$3000 for a Full Frame is still too much for hobbyists/prosumers.

By the time they do price a full frame DSLR to $1500, an equivalent model in APS-C will be much cheaper meaning they won't be obsolete anytime soon.

Here's a search for images taken using the EF-S 17-55

i have a question though, if i dont have plans in going full frame in the near future or not until i win the lottery. choosing between the 24-70 2.8L or 17-55 2.8 IS. if im not mistaken, they are at almost the same price bracket (63k / 55k)

should i go for the lesser priced EF-S but with IS
or go with the higher priced but an L

The focal length required is the deciding factor...

17-55 is better for events due to the wider end. IS a small plus too.
24-70 is better for portraiture as it has less distortion (required for close ups)

Hi Raymond,

If you dont have the 17-40 or the 10-22 then id suggest go for the 17-55.
17-55 on a 1.6 crop camera (24-70 on a full frame) for me is the most used focal lenght for general photography.

Hi,

I got mine for 53,500 pesos last October from Mayers.
So far I haven't experienced any dust problems with it and I am residing in Riyadh which is a very dusty place especially when shooting outdoors.

For me its well worth the price, I am able to have some hand held sharp pictures at 1/8 of a second.

I chose this over the 24-105 due to the 17mm which is a significant difference for me against the 24mm.

i wonder why people are so scared of having ef-s "for future compatibility".

if you have no plans in the immediate future to buy 1D's and 5d, why would ef-s stop you?

even if you have plans to buy one in the future, you can always sell that fine lens with minimum loss because of it's quality.

contrary to that, i'm surprised how big re-sale value of lenses significantly depreciate nowadays. it's shocking to find out that i got my 24-70 L for 68k brand new and now it costs 60k at the same shop. the normal price of second-hand 24-70s is around 55-59k. it even went down as far as 53k. same goes for the 70-200 IS. before at hidalgo it was priced at around 110-115k. now you can get it for 95k brand new. second hand price is even cheaper, you can get one for 75-85k in forums. and to think these lenses are the "legendary" lenses of canon.

either way, if you buy just to sell it in the future, lugi ka pa rin. well that's just my opinion! don't havta agree with me! hehe watcha guys think? :)

here's another reason why i'm not so confident about getting an ef-s. don't get me wrong ah, i'm so in love with the 17-55 2.8.. i was happier with it that with my 24-70. i just really wish it was L... darn! :)

Jom: In my case, it's a 10D, so EF-S will not fit my cam.
