I did some un-conventional approach in shooting a basketball game... I've used a 15mm fisheye lens, and the effect was quite awesome!

Here are some samples...

Ideally, you would use a long fast tele-zoom lens. If you're a Nikon user, it's the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens. If you're a Canon user, then it's the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens. Third party option would be a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM DG EX but no IS or VR, or the 80-400mm with OS but only f/5.6 on the long end.

If you're in a tight budget, there are several cheaper options with excellent optics... say the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED lens without VR.

Hope these help... cheers!

Though I use a 70-200 most of the time, it's not true that you need one.

You can shoot basketball with any focal length IMHO.

pre, kung di ka tight budget, you need a fast lens. di lang sa basketball yan, kundi halos lahat ng indoor that with low lighting condition.

if you could provide and starting, e why don't you buy the suited ones than selling them again afterwards and buy the appropriate lenses. this surely is for sportsphotogs like you.

Nikkor 200mm f/2.0 is available too. :-) wala kang sabit! walang tapon!

Richard Larrios once shot a PBL game (with Al Neri) using a 10-22mm. At first thought I "huh? what did he do that for?" but when I saw the pics, I was silenced.

You can shoot basketball with any lens, believe me.

shot with Sigma 70-200mm 2.8

I use my Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 most of the time but wide lens can produce some amazing shots..

hi marcos, i shot a basketball game using a 16mm macro once. kasi i was able to get near the ring. now if you're constrained to just shooting from the sidelines, you could use a long one :) cheers!

its all about positioning, quality of light and what kind of shots you want. I dont like to bring too many lenses when i shoot. usually during basketball games, a 50mm 1.8 can do wonders.
