dr.mark.dimalanta 01-14-2007, 12:03 AM hi guys!
thanks for the warm reception. it was a sheer pleasure working with pentax team out here in the US (Pentax Imaging USA) CES was frequented by more than 200,000 visitors and we had a great time showcasing the k100d and k10d along with the entire pentax lens lineup. The best news from a sales and marketing point of view, was that we met, or exceeded every goal we set out. So, for all the naysayers... Pentax is chugging along just fine. Although I cant disclose them until the official announcements, pentax has a few more aces up their sleeve by way of new product announcments. This will be a very bright year for end pentax users.
The CES show was actually like a warm up, and a chance for me to meet the pentax staff here in the USA. The real whopper will be at PMA (photo marketers association) in a few months. there I will present a new show featuring every lens in the pentax lineup. I will be teamed up with 2 other world famous photogs; erik aeder and jerry driendl. I will also be on hand for the philippine star newspaper, reporting on all the latest camera gear from all the manufacturers.
I cant wait for the show and i will blog all the event highlights.
happy shooting,
mark

Probably very few here knew that you are one of those who can influence Pentax future product offerings. I knew it because I always read your posts (and that of Roland Mabo) @ DPReview Pentax SLR Talk. You did the test of K10D before it was announced in Photokina last September, so I assume you are now doing the test of K1D? Will it be announced in PMA? One thing I wish is for pentaprism to come back in Pentax entry level DSLRs like K2XXD.

Hi Nat,
wow, you give me too much credit. as a matter of fact, pentax usa does follow the forums religiously to get a feel for what customers want. I know that the USA branch is highly revered in japan, and has much influence on pentax japan; but all in all it was concept and design from the engineers at mother japan, that really put the technology in the k100 and k10. coincidentally, it just so happened that the pentax offerings in both cameras satisfied much of what people wanted.
I had read some of your posts on DPR in the past, and always had a suspicion that you were from the philippines because of your beautiful picture in your sig, and the content of your pbase gallery.
well it has been a fantastic year shooting with pentax equipment, although i have been doing it for the last 20 years, it was in this last year I got a chance to really see the future of where pentax is going.
all i can say is that pentax has so many new tech advances up their sleeve, 2007 will prove to be a great year. I once walked into a store in hidalgo and got laughed at and almost shouted at, on out the door for asking for pentax gear. Here in the US and elswhere globally pentax is proving very profitable for vendors and all of them are clamoring at simply the chance to sell pentax stuff. the new pentax is definitely here, and i just hope that the philippine market gets further barnd recognition and awareness about the traditions of pentax. in such a short amount of time, the philippine market had almost erased pentax's presence. in this modern era, those who have been shooting longer remember pentax fondly, and it will only prove unwise for business if pentax is excluded. pentax is the number one selling DSLR in japan, as i last checked. we may be a small company, but we are entering the ring packing a powerful punch!!!
keep in touch!

victor_vesuna 01-23-2007, 06:12 PM I just hope that Pentax will be more visible in the Philippines, throughout my 17 years as Pentax user I havent seen any advertisement, I also have to go abroad just to buy the accesories.
Jamie Sy 01-23-2007, 09:46 PM Congratulations, Dr. Mark!!!!
Jamie Sy 01-23-2007, 09:53 PM I saw a Pentax billboard in Cebu a few years ago. It was in the highway pa. At that time, it was still the *ist DS that was advertised. Any idea if Pentax is more popular in Cebu since it's made there?
Pentax DSLRs--proudly made in the Philippines (by a Japanese company)!!!

And store people in Hidalgo are telling me not to buy Pentax because it is just made in Cebu, Ganun?!
alistaire_ong 01-24-2007, 02:22 PM wow ang galing naman..
dr.mark.dimalanta 01-24-2007, 02:42 PM i was once yelled at by a shop owner on hidalgo st. for asking for the pentax FA* line of exclusive lenses. his reply was... "why would i stock those lenses? for the one day that maybe YOU might walk into my store???" well, i never bought anything from his establishment and it is his right to stock whatever he wants. business is business.
I later moved on to another store (Ave photo), where i purchased some nikon lenses at a steal, and the sales staff and owners were quite helpful. if i remember correctly 'wilson' was his name, and we maintained long conversations about pentax's future.
it's ironic, although assembled there in cebu (lenses made in either japan or vietnam) and all with the strictest measures for quality control; but i would assume that the home market of the philippines might catch a break and be offered pentax gear at a cheaper price. ironically, it is often several times more expensive than US prices. one of the sales staff at a pentax showroom mentioned that it was because of the VAT, that the equipment is more expensive. it doesnt really make sense and i wont go into it, but something tells me that something else is going on behind the scenes, and that is a different story all together.
most pentax loyal users have to buy their gear outside of the philippines to catch a price break. I have often thought about opening a small import blikbayan service, since i am in the philippines so often, and because i enjoy pentax equipment so much, i feel that more people should, as well.
prices per item fluctuate and i hear that the 540 FGZ is actually a steal at camerahaus. I will confirm this on my next trip and possibly buy it there if it proves cheaper than US prices.
given enough time, and i believe pentax will regain the brand recognition that it once held. it is already happening in europe and the US. no problems in japan, however because pentax has now become the most popular selling SLR with the release of the K10. japanese camera stores cant keep them in stock, they are simply flying off the shelf.
better days on the horizon...
until then, happily shooting with a pentax!
