Hi Gene, not quite familiar with your cam but I merely browsed your cam's features and they're quite similar mo most Canon P&S with manual features like my old S40.
If you're totally new to photography, study composition, framing and how exposures differ in your full auto mode first... As you get the hang of your new cam, move to P mode wherein the exposure is still automatic, but you can play with white balance, iso, bracketing etc features of your cam.
In both of these modes, try your best NOT to use flash unless absolutely necessary for most shots.
The reason is that most cams presets the exposure to match the speed of the flash, resulting to similar lighting and photo exposure regardless of where you are.
Try these when learning sa P mode... Turn on flash on outdoor, bright day shots while turning it off when you "normally" think you need flash.
Once you get the hang of your cam (again) and have a better understanding of what your cam can do, then you move on to trying out Av/Tv modes and so on and so forth.
Give yourself time to be "one" with the cam... You'll have a helluva time shooting with a good P&S... It took me 3-4 years before I fully understood the limitations, strength and quirks of my S40 and most of my most "good" shots (well in my relatively low standards, at least) were shot using a P&S.
Have fun!
Oh, isa pa... READ THE MANUAL hehe. Canon writes pretty good user manuals, understand (almost) all the features of your cam to maximize it... I only realized my S40 had exposure/focus lock 3 years after I used the cam hehe.

I have your camera's predecessor, the A620. It's a really good camera, so make good use of it. :)
Most of the time, I shoot in Program mode and keep my ISO 200 and below. Usually, after 200, its noise is too high already, especially if you're going to brighten up the photo afterwards.
Like what they said, the manual is informative. Probably if you can already understand the purpose of each camera mode, you can ask more for tips.
