View Full Version : MY version of DIY lightbox
Peter Jaena 01-12-2007, 03:05 PM I was too lazy to make my own, so I used this laundry container. Got 2 25watt Firefly octopus 5000K econolight bulbs, 2 desktop lamps from ACE, some felt paper from National. And there you go, my DIY softboxes for lazy persons like me, hehe.
I got shots like this...

And this...

Just pick the ones with the whitest frosted plastic. Most of them are. Dami choices sa nearest Handyman or Ace. Goodluck Darryl. :)
Darryl Ong 01-12-2007, 03:14 PM peter,, how did you come up with the reflection below the pic? PP or transparent glass,, just curious? thanks

PP the reflections. Mas na co control ko if sa PP na. :)
Black Acrylic plastic works very well also, pero fixed na yung reflection, but it saves time kase no need to photoshop the relfection.

Jay Aldrich Cu 01-13-2007, 10:02 AM nice shots peter. by the way, saan sa picture yung 25 watt na firefly octopus? pardon my ignorance, ano ba yun? ang nakikita ko lang yung dalawa ng desktop lamps.
jadran_dychioco 01-13-2007, 07:10 PM i think the 25 watt na firefly octopus are attached to the lamps,
how did you do the effect on the ring that was like it was dropped? or was is really dropped?
Peter Jaena 01-13-2007, 08:08 PM @peter- anong lens ang ginamit mo ? btw ayos to dami kong container na ganito . problema walang lamp pa .

Peter Jaena 01-13-2007, 08:12 PM Peter,
You're DIY lightbox is so cool! Love the product shots especially the bangle(?). Do you teach product photography? I would love to learn how to take photos of jewelries. :) Hehe!
Thank sa papuri Louie. :)
I dont think I'm qualified pa to teach product photography. Napakarami ko pang dapat matutunan sa mga masters in order to do that. :D
And yes, Jewerly photography is an art of it's own. Napaka hirap kunan ng jewelry hehehe.

Hello Jeff, thanks rin pala sa comment. Glad to know na helpful rin pala tong mini project ko, hehe. :)
Peter Jaena 01-13-2007, 08:25 PM nice shots peter. by the way, saan sa picture yung 25 watt na firefly octopus? pardon my ignorance, ano ba yun? ang nakikita ko lang yung dalawa ng desktop lamps.
Actually mali pala, spiral pala nabili ko, ndi yung octopus. It's just the term they use to describe the shape ng actual bulb. Firefly ang brand ng bulbs that I got. Not that necessary na yun talaga bilhin mo. Any lang na econolight, pero syempre the brighter and whiter the better. Mas marami mas magaling pa lalo.
Peter Jaena 01-13-2007, 08:31 PM i think the 25 watt na firefly octopus are attached to the lamps,
how did you do the effect on the ring that was like it was dropped? or was is really dropped?
Actually this is a PP trick I learned when I looked at numerous jewelry photos from foreign magazines. They all just take the pictures of rings bracelets horizontal... The trick is to rotate the ring in PP to the desired angle. It will look like it was photographed that way. And by changing the angles in every shot, and placing all the rings in 1 frame using PP, the effect is that iba iba ang angles ng rings. :)
Pero syempre this trick will only work if you work in solid color BGs. If you plan on a background na real objects, this cannot be done. And a bead of wax or gluegun is required to get the rings to stand on their own.:)
Peter Jaena 01-14-2007, 02:45 PM Just did this minutes ago, another sample using my DIY lightbox... :)

Well, in case you change your mind and plan to teach taking photos of jewelries, do let me know. I'm very interested! :D
You're right, it's a subject that's very difficult to take photos of! Good lighting is definitely important.
Peter Jaena 02-19-2007, 10:39 PM Experimented a lightbox using a Styro icebox.... hmmmm works pretty well actually. What do you guys think?

tonyromualdez 05-04-2008, 12:59 AM are the lamps the only sources of light here...?
cristeenquezon 05-05-2008, 12:16 PM no need for an external flash for the jewelry shot ? because it looks brilliant ... excellent photo !
