Has anyone tried these with an 85mm f1.8 Prime? how much closer per tube will the focusing distance be and how much light fall off?

I know there are three tubes

12mm
24mm
36mm

is the focal length computation be as simple as adding the 12mm to 85mm for example? What effective fstop will the resulting light off be?
eg

will 12mm addition to f1.8 become f2.2? how do you compute?

focal length over amount of extension will give you the ratio of magnification. 50mm lens with 50mm extension will get you to 1:1, a 50mm lens with 25mm extension will give you 1:2

Tried using my extension tubes with an 85mm, but never really measured how much closer I can focus and light fall off is not noticeable, but I only use 1 tube at a time. If I want a greater magnification I use a shorter lens like the 50mm rather than stacking the tubes.

Hi Arnel,

I was actually at Hidalgo last week looking for extension tubes as well. Managed to find a set at Avenue. Cost is around 8900 for the three tubes. Not sure what your camera is (mine's Canon), but I guess the price wouldn't be too different for Nikon or other brands.

Or you can purchase from echostore... the tubes cost 880Php with free delivery within Metro Manila... waaaaaaaaaay cheaper than Kenko tubes so shipping wouldn't be that much of a problem... made of metal and they have mounts for Canon, Nikon and Pentax:) Their tubes are 9mm, 16mm and 30mm... I use mine with a 50mm lens to get 1:1 magnification (more or less since the total FL of the three tubes are 55mm, throw in the crop factor into the mix, and I have no idea what the exact ratio is! I stink at math haha... but I digress...) , or use the tubes with my bellows to achieve 2:1 magnifications(twice life-size) or more even...

This may help :):)

Franz, how's your experience with echostroe for possible returns/repair? Also, other than the list in its website, does echostore have other photogear in stock?

@Dan: Haven't returned or had anything repaired yet from echostore sir Dan... but I'm sure they'll be easy to talk to if ever any problems arise... As for the products on their website, there are some not listed (like the extension tubes, at least last I checked) so surely they have other photogear...

@Buddy: Thanks! But for me to read the image, I need to use a macro lens:D (I wear glasses...) But thanks for the info!

@Franz: Cheaper alternatives are always welcome. Thanks for the tip!
I know you're not a canon user, but would you know if their extension tubes are EFS compatible?

@felix: AFAIK, they have mounts available for Canon, Nikon and Pentax...:)

Yes, we do have Ext Tube sets for Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Olympus 4/3 systems.
Extension tubes are simply stackable metal barrels that are attached in between your camera and lens. An extension tube has absolutely no effect on optics since they are simply metal barrel mounts. So image quality is not affected.
HTH... =)

Has any body here tried NIkon VR lens on Kenko ext tube? (Auto ext tubes). Does VR and auto focus function with it?

you can try searching online. you can find a kenko ext tube set specifically for EFS lenses.

there are ext tubes that are just plain barrel and there are those that can control your lens' aperture/focus even with the tubes attached. Big discrepancy with pricing.

The Echostore extension tubes are just that, metal extension tubes with no extension for the electrical contacts which controls the focus mechanism and the aperture. So what this leaves you is everything manual mode only. But the price is really such a steal, got one but haven't really found time to actually try it out... They have mounts for both Canon and Nikon.

Right. That price is definitely a steal. I wonder if the chinese plastic extension tubes are worth it. I'm here in the UK and everything is just a tad too expensive.

hey guys,

since i can't create a new thread, this is the thread closest to my question.

is the extension tube (especially generic one :Scared: ) has to be use with 50mm f1.8 lens?
just bought this generic extension tube today and to my dismay, it doesn't work with the
kit lens that comes with Nikon D40. :(

any idea / inputs as to my discovery today would be greatly appreciated. :)

regards,
ruel

i won't work with af-s lenses, you need lenses with an aperture ring. you could get yourself a set of close-up filters instead.

It can work with automatic lenses, you need to stop it down using the DOF preview button before mounting onto the tubes.

I touched on that issue in this thread (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=11153)

but the d40 doesn't have a DOF preview feature

it will work but you'll have to have an ample amount of lights to light your subject coz you will be stuck at full closed apperture (f/22), coz there is no way(that i know of) you can adjust its apperture... i've tried it with the kit lens of my d40x too...

Will the KET work the aperture of your kitlens? Im thinking of buying one again after i sold one 7 months ago. I bought a full manual tubes because its cheaper but after using it I want to go back to KET.
