cris_servillas 11-25-2006, 04:28 PM thanks for sharing jo.
Randall Cipriano 11-25-2006, 04:33 PM Thanks, I was wondering how this lens would perform in lowlight. Is that how it really looked or just color cast?
jojo_mamangun 11-25-2006, 04:35 PM i think it's only color cast. it was a bit hazy that time and the yellow cast are from the street lamps.
cris_servillas 11-25-2006, 04:36 PM its definitely a color cast.
Darryl Ong 11-25-2006, 06:32 PM i regret buying my canon 75-300mm, should have bought this one,, thanks for sharing:)
jojo_mamangun 11-25-2006, 06:51 PM i regret buying my canon 75-300mm, should have bought this one,, thanks for sharing:)
why regret man? are there any issues with your lens? enlighten us
Darryl Ong 11-25-2006, 07:09 PM why regret man? are there any issues with your lens? enlighten us
it's hard to get a sharp image during low light,, and when you reach 300mm it's almost impossible to get a sharp image, most of my friends took the sigma 70-300 and i saw first hand the difference between the two,, but hey i'm not an expert and i might be wrong here, so if you want this lens better ask the experts :) peace:)
Darryl Ong 11-25-2006, 07:12 PM btw how much did you get the sigma 70-300? in hidalgo it goes around Php 12500,, that was 4-5 mos ago,,,
Giovanni de la Cruz 11-25-2006, 11:55 PM Nice test shots. Haven't used it much for night shots but your photos make me wanna try it out more. The lens is pretty decent for moving car photos too.
dino_de_leon 11-28-2006, 09:15 AM agree that this sigma lens is the top choice outside the nikon or canon consumer tele zooms. had this before when i was still using canon and was able to get some really nice and sharp shots even at the telephoto wide open.
oh...and it has a SWEET macro feature also!
if nikon didn't have the 70-210 AF i would've gotten this one
allen aligam 01-21-2007, 09:26 PM Hi guys,
Just a couple of questions regarding the 70-300 APO DG of sigma since i just bought one myself yesterday..hehehe
1. what kind of tests should i perform to make sure that i had a good copy? including the macro function:)
2. have you guys tried using it for outdoor sports? i tried it a while ago and it was a little soft..im not sure if its the weather or the lens? i used shutter priority for this and iso 200-400 i'll try posting the pics a little bit later:)
Hope you guys can help me out!:D
Thanks!
allen aligam 01-21-2007, 09:51 PM as promised here are some pics of my test shots:) is it really just me and my inexperience in shooting outdoor or is the 70-300 a little soft? feedback will be most welcome

krisaquino 01-27-2007, 07:19 PM Hi, I'm about to purchase a telephoto lens (70-300mm), but I wasn't sure which brand to get. I've never owned a Sigma lens before, so I don't know about its performance. Would you guys recommend it or should I just stick to Canon?
Oggie Ramos 01-28-2007, 11:05 AM for the price i got it for, the sigma 70-300 seems like a good buy. got mine for around 11,500-11,800 at jt (nikon mount) last year.
Oggie Ramos 01-28-2007, 11:28 AM one caveat though, for sports photography, get a faster lens (2.8) :-D
levi lacandula 01-28-2007, 12:13 PM had one (70-300) before and its light and was ok if you have enough light.
its a bit soft on the tele side (300mm). if you're planning to get one.. get the APO version - a lit better than my non-APO then.
good luck!

Hi whats the difference between the 70-300 apo and non apo? beside the price. also which is better sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 dg macro or the 70-300 mm apo?
francis 02-05-2007, 09:53 PM i got the 70-300 APO lens. at the photoworld exhibit. and it's way better than the price that you pay
arlene solis chua 02-05-2007, 10:12 PM i love the lense...sigma 70-300 macro apo got it from taks ...

James Rosca 02-06-2007, 06:31 AM i recently traded my 18 - 200 mm lens from sigma for this one thanks for the input guys I thought I made a mistake
Oggie Ramos 02-06-2007, 02:56 PM to joel: the apo version has aprochomatic lenses which means less color aberrations as when different colors focus at different distances from a lens. as dave said, it's better to get the apo version (which costs around 2k more).
Oggie Ramos 02-06-2007, 03:08 PM to joel uli: the sigma 28-300 has a much lower minimum focusing distance (50cm vs. 150cm); a bit lighter (490gm vs. 545gm). however, in the macro mode, the 70-300 has the edge (1:2 vs. 1:3). i guess it depends on what you already have. i bought this piece to complement my kit lens (18-70mm) and ultra (10-20). the wide end of the 28-300 comes in handy though when you want to carry just one lens :-D
JonCobico 03-05-2007, 11:57 AM Hi! I'm just a newbie in photography and just bought this lens @ Photoworld Manila. I hope I'm not late on this thread.... For me, the lens is a good buy for its price. But I just noticed that when I switch this lens to manual, it still do autofocus. This is unlikely on my kitlens (350d). This is my very first extra lens. Maybe you guys can give me more explanation.
Edmar Lagarico 03-05-2007, 12:10 PM Have 70-300 sigma, try this guys set your focus to manual set to min focus of macro, set it to 300mm, switch to macro, then rotate to 70mm from 300, now yuo can shoot macro at 70mm setting at .95m min distance.
joelhgarcia 03-05-2007, 01:23 PM To all DPP Members who own a 70-300 mm APO DG Sigma. Im just curious could you post more pictures at different zoom range? In this way some fotogs who like to buy this lens (like me) have more reference if this lens is good.
Thanks in advance.

peace!
eugene_bacosa 03-16-2007, 10:01 AM How does it perform in the 200-300mm range, esp during not-so-sunny conditions, "handhold-able" ba (is there such a term)? Does it have IS or VR (equivalent)? Thanks!
Oggie Ramos 03-16-2007, 10:22 AM @eugene, the 70-300 turns in a respectable performance in not-so-sunny conditions with a tendency to get soft at the 300mm end. you can take decent shots hand-held but i think, at the extreme end of the range, you need to steady it or use a tripod. at the price (11,800), it's too much to ask for a image stabilization/vibration reduction. is/vr lenses cost twice or thrice as much

Christian Enricuso 03-16-2007, 11:06 AM just got my sigma 70-300 APO telemacro lens and so far i'm very impressed with the results. I haven't tried using this lens with a tripod since the sony alpha's super steadyshot feature helps out with my unsteady hands.

Rodel Ramos 04-05-2007, 09:13 PM This thread is very informative. Based from the reviews and the sample shots, Sigma 70-300mm (I think)is a good buy. Question. Can this lens be also useful in events like weddings? Help please...
JoshuaViray 04-07-2007, 11:36 AM ^ I have the APO DG Macro version. (Red Ring) From what I understand, this version is considerably better than the non-APO version.
I would say it is of limited use at weddings. It's just too slow, at f/4-5.6, fairly soft wide open, so you'll need to stop down what is already a slow lens. Plus it has a slightly noisy focusing motor, and it has a tendency to hunt in low light. Not good when you're trying to be an insconpicous (sp?) photographer inside a church. :) It's just not an indoor lens.
But it is a great lens for its price. Esp outdoors in good light. Plus you get a useful 1:2 macro at 300mm. But for weddings, I'd suggest you put your money towards a faster lens or one with a much useful range.
Pros: Decent at < 200mm. Great at 70mm especially stopped down. Excellent value esp if you can't afford something like the 70-300 VR/IS. Useful macro mode.
Cons: No HSM, f/4-5.6, poor build - the cap on mine keeps on falling off and the zoom started creeping after about 2mos, lens extends quite a bit when zoomed and close focused. No focus limiter. Poor at 300mm.
Cheers.
EDIT: I believe the Non-APO version does not have the red ring in the front of the lens. I could be wrong though.

Paolo Aguenza 05-02-2007, 08:26 PM hello everyone! will the sigma 70-300mm auto focus on the d40? need help pls :)
Afraid not. I believe only the Sigma lenses with HSM (Hypersonic Motor) and built in motors will AF on the D40. You can see the list here:

Christian Enricuso 05-02-2007, 09:15 PM Hi everyone! You might want to be careful when using the manual focus on your simga 70-300 APO. Mine just went haywire recently making this loud grinding noise when i turn on my cam lasting for 5 seconds. Although the lens is still usable in its manual mode, but autofocus is gone. Good thing JT photoworld can fix it but it is going to take them at least a month to get the parts that needs to be replaced.
Nicolo Marallag 05-02-2007, 09:24 PM @paolo
sayang naman. i called up JT kasi knina. the lady i talked to said that it will AF on the d40. sayang...

if you dropby dpreview, majority of the members prefer this lens over the N or C counterpart. i personally had one when i was still using a canon 300D and it produced some really nice/ sharp shots especially at macro. no question it provides a lot of bang for the buck.
some gripes for me about this lens...
- the front ring rotates when focusing so it is a HASSLE to use a CPL filter
- slow auto focus...well actually it depends on your camera but for me, unless your using a 1D series or D2 series...AF is sloooooooooow
- the lens extends too long when zooming...looks cool cos you suddenly have a humongous lens but very touch to get sharp shots handheld...or even on a tripod if placed in an awkward angle
Manny Manapat 06-13-2007, 05:54 PM HI Joel,
I own one.. nikon mount..
here's a sample shot @ 300mm

one thing i don't like in this lens is that you have to be at least 3ft apart from d subject..
Tracy, this is a beautiful shot at 300mm. Which Nikon model do you own? I own a D40x and am thinking of getting this lens as well. Does this lens AF with your Nikon (just to be 100% sure)?

Just saw the Sigma list of D40 and D40x compatible lenses, which means that unfortunately, the 70-300mm will not AF with my camera, so I'm back to the 70-200mm, I guess.

You have a very good friend for selling you the APO lens for that price. :)
This lens if very useful for zoom and some macro shots. and as you can see, there seems to be a lot of users of this lens.
I got this lens because of the APO lens, rather than the Canon with the USM. Better lens, better picture. You don't need a USM unless you're doing sport or action shots IMO.

danpagulayan 10-03-2007, 11:54 PM This sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro is beguiling. Based on HK internet prices and email from New Sankyo, it's cheap already -- although only a tad cheaper than at JTPhotoworld in Manila.
Folks, how does this compare to its Nikon counterpart -- both the ED only (more expensive) and the ED VR version (mucho mucho more expensive)? The Nikon version does not claim to have macro.
Can't make up my mind....

yup.. and so are other F-Mount lenses.. even decades ago, will "fit right" into you beloved d40. that's the price you pay for buying the d40.. not that many cheap lenses will autofocus..
danpagulayan 10-12-2007, 12:11 PM Hi All,
Though I've read about the general QA/QC issues about Sigma lenses, I still think that there are ways to avoid a bad copy. I am leaning towards the Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 APO DG Macro for my next purchase.
My question to Sigma users is this: What should I look for/avoid when buying this lens? How will I know if one is a good copy or not? Are there quick, in-store tests that one can do?
Thanks a lot!!!

bernie_ledesma 10-12-2007, 03:10 PM I just got one from JT Photo and all I could do was feel the gears while zooming in and out, no crunching sound, then test its focusing mechanism, on both near and far, then physical look over for scratches, fingerprints, or dents, look into the glass, no specs, then just really read the manual...
Unlike the "L" lens where you could real time manual focus, this lens has strict rules especially when engaging the Macro. Focal length has to be between 200-300 likewise with the focus ring, it has to be in the minimum focusing distance, otherwise, you'll break gears etc. Small price to pay for a really good budget telephoto lens. For the money, its really a nice worthy purchase.
danpagulayan 10-14-2007, 12:30 AM Hi all,
Thanks for your reply. Got the chance to try a good copy at JT photo today. The lens seems light and is long, which, i think, is contributing to camera shake (i'm using a d80). Not a big issue, but needs getting used to.
On the 300mm, I shot both macro and non-macro. Cam shake was obvious (my fault, as i was still trying to fathom the impact of its price on my wallet) and i could not tell the diff from the pics taken.
How is your experience on this lens on mcaro and non-macro?
thanks.

i just bought this sigma from ebay, im still waiting for it to arrive. what do you mean by break gears? is there a problem shooting it with macro?
bernie_ledesma 10-14-2007, 08:05 AM Hi Alain, no problem shooting it with macro, it is the procedure to switch over to macro that needs attention. Ive heard stories of focusing gears breaking to which I think is due to users not following "the procedure". You do not just switch to macro, you need to first place the focal length between 200-300, etc.
Hi Dan, having a long "zoom" lens requires special handling, picture you are using a rifle instead of a hand gun, all movements will be obvious. You have to be very steady holding it. Use a tripod, a mono pod, lean your back against a wall, anything to stabilized your camera.

Ram Camanay 11-06-2007, 08:39 AM just want to second Bernie's caution on using this Sigma lens on Macro. There is a definite resistance on the switch when you try to move it from normal to macro on focal length other than between 200mm and 300mm. Do not force it.
Also when you want to return it to normal from macro, first turn the focusing ring to infinity and focal length to 300mm, then switch to normal. I've also heard of front/back focusing problems so the first thing I did was check for that in the store. JTPhoto lent me a Nikon D200 for that! At home, I further tested it based on this recommendation:
http://photo.net/learn/focustest/
I have a very good lens based on my test.
Check that the aperture ring smoothly travels and rests into place at each aperture indicator with a definite click. If you are getting the Nikon mount, check also that the aperture lock (small switch near the aperture ring) switches on and off without trouble. While you're there, get a 58mm multi-coated Sigma UV filter to protect the lens.
Good luck!

Shooting distance is approximately 2 meters. Subject is a very small frog about 1.25". Notice the proportion of the frog to the fine bermuda grass.

Hi Dexter, No she was not aware, on casual candid shoots like this I just lounge in the shorelines basking in the sun, look up for anything interesting and if I see one, I try and capture it. On a sunny day with 300mm to work with, you can really snipe.
@ Roel, Bang for the buck this lens delivers, good copy or not i think these are fragile items, that just needs to be handled carefully.

These are lovely "wild" birds, you'll never see that here. The first shot is a little over, lost some details of the branches and the nice moss growth, you could allocate that extra resource to the shutter speed, to freeze their movements. New Zealand backyard...?

Paolo Aguenza 01-31-2008, 09:04 AM Finally, Sigma updated this value for money lens for the D40/D60 users. Based on the images I've seen on this thread, I can't wait to try it out.

Yup they are on our backyard tree here in NZ.... our tree has lot's of fruits (plums and peach) and are attracting lots of wild birds.

robbmtan 05-01-2008, 12:48 AM Hi. Has anyone tried/used the one with built-in motor? How is the AF? I'm seriously considering getting one for my D40.
Chito P. Mallillin 05-01-2008, 08:18 AM Hi Rob, I got one that has a built in motor, its a great lens given its low price. It has difficulty focusing though in low light just as its other versions- you can't expect much with a 5.6 opening at 300mm. Sometimes, it's quite noisy too when it is focusing, far from its silent HSM counterparts. Apart from these, I think it is still a nice addition to my lenses considering its macro capability (min. focusing dist. of .96m @ 300mm) and of course its long reach with the 300 mm. Check these photos.... all taken @ 300mm.

robbmtan 05-01-2008, 10:11 AM Nice macro shot. Would you guys recommend this over the nikkor 55-200 VR? I'm kinda leaning towards the sigma because of the longer reach plus the macro capability. Would the VR of the Nikkor make a lot of a difference, considering that i'll be using either for sports photos. Low-light won't be much of a problem because I intend to shoot sports outdoors (eg. swimming competitions, soccer games, etc.)
Emmanuel Deoferio 05-01-2008, 03:42 PM If you want reach then this is the lens for you compared to the Nikkor 55-200 VR. VR works for camera shake and gives you the extra stop in low-light shooting which is really of help. But if you're shooting outdoors as you said then VR is not of importance to you though sometimes it may be of use. For instance, in our eagerness to capture the scene we jam the shutter thus taking a blurred picture. To the uninitiated the VR feature helps a lot.
@ Romar - thats a great shot Romar. Sometimes we dont need those expensive glass, but if you have the money why not, right?
robbmtan 05-01-2008, 09:58 PM That's what I figured, but since I'm a newbie, I had to get confirmation from the Masters!:)
Thanks for the inputs.
CornellCorales 05-04-2008, 11:07 AM good day

Congrats Timon on your new lens. I like the 2nd picture, I find it cute. These pictures from this lens posted here is sharp and a good alternative to the Nikon but Sigma should have an OS equivalent to Nikon's VR but then it would drive the price of this lens up.

Cornell, get the 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO for Nikon which can auto-focus in the D40/x/60. I just dont know if this is the same as the 70-300 DL DG which costs 7900 at JT Photo.
CornellCorales 05-06-2008, 09:07 PM i saw at the sigma site that this lens is a DG lens. do you need to multiply this with the crop factor?
Emmanuel Deoferio 05-07-2008, 12:01 PM Yes. You multiply that by 1.5 so you have a 105-450 focal range. Since its a DG lens you can use this with full-frame cameras like the new D3.
robpinzon 05-14-2008, 08:47 PM do you have one emm?
Emmanuel Deoferio 05-15-2008, 02:57 PM No Rob I dont have this lens. What I had before was the cheap Nikkor 70-300. Its ok for its price but not fast in low light situations. The Nikkor AF-S 70-300VR is a very good lens with VR although its expensive.
robpinzon 05-15-2008, 07:20 PM yes vr/os lenses are very expensive but i want to try this lens or else i will buy a 55-200mm nikor vr
CornellCorales 05-16-2008, 01:42 PM for those who own this lens is it worth the extra 3k to get the APO version?
KikoyBalayon 05-16-2008, 01:55 PM @Cornell
you have to look "really well" to see the difference... if that's 3k for you..
on the external side, the APO, has a red stripe, while the non-APO looks dull.. if that means anything to you :D

Quite impressive for a cheap lens. Autofocus thought is slow. The newest apo version might be better.

For me, the is version should be the best esp if you shoot tele
CornellCorales 05-25-2008, 06:13 PM got this last friday and i tested this lens on a wedding reception i attended yesterday. this lens work great (assuming you use flash or tripod). its not as fast as nikon SWM (i'm using a nikon D40) and not as quiet. but it is fast. i used to own a sigma tele lens for canon EOS 500 film cam and that lens is slow. i used this also in macro mode to photo ornamental aquarium shrimps. its hard to hand hold the lens since macro is locked at 200-300mm so i used a tripod with an exposere time of 3 seconds.
Rizel Oliver Jimenez 06-20-2008, 07:34 AM how slow is the AF on this? compared to the nikkor 50mm f1.8, 18-105 f3.5-5.6 and 18-55 f3.5-5.6? (those are the only lenses i'v tried)
Richard Ochoa 06-20-2008, 08:20 AM I just want to share:)......I do use Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 APO DG for my SONY Alpha mount, the glass works great, but slow AF on low light nevertheless it shows competative quality of glass and price.

Richard Ochoa 06-20-2008, 01:52 PM I strongly recommend to visit JT as far as I know they have glass sample (70-300 APO DG) for your nikon by then you can compare it to 50mm and test it, unlike me I advanced ordered the glass without test shoot.... I hope it helps...:)
