Hi guys, I have a small question, what does the digits next to the battery indicator stands for. This is found when using the EOS utility. Thanks.

I didn't check the manuals, and having beennusing the utility lately, but my bet is that it represents how many shots remaining on your CF card. Is that a 4GB cf card? if not maybe your hard drive has about 4GB left. =)
it used to only indicate 999 on older models and never flashed anything different.

Curiously, I linked my 400D to my computer and checked the EOS Utility software. I followed your camera setting and set mine to Large jpeg at 200 ISO Manual setting with f/4 aperture and 1/60 shutter speed. I have a 2GB CF card in my unit with no images. My LCD indicated I had 490 shots left while the reading in the computer specified 753. I took a picture while the camera was still connected to my PC and the number on the computer went down to 752. Therefore, it really is associated with the number of shots on the computer. I'm not just sure why it doesn't match with the shot indicator in the LCD of the 400D.

Additional observation though, when I took a picture with the camera while still linked to the computer, it automatically downloaded the file to the PC. The shot indicator in the PC registered a 752. When the picture was deleted in the camera, surprisingly the shot indicator in the PC did not reset back to 753. So, its probably a counter of some sort. Ay, ewan.....

by default, the camera saves images on your cpu(my pictures) if remote shooting is used.. that number determines the number of shots remaining for you to store on your hard disk.. in short.. hard disk capacity! hehe:Grin:

But my count always defaults at 999 regardless of how much free space I have left on my computer's HD. :D
Cheers!

According to the manual it is "Shots to go - Displays the number of possible shots".
Also from the manual:
The display for the maximum number of possible shots is the same as for the camera: [1999] shots for the EOS-1D series cameras, [999] for all cameras other than the EOS-1D series, and [9999] shots for the EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi/400D DIGITAL. However, if your computer's hard disk capacity is large, you can shoot more images than the above figures.
Manuals can be downloaded at http://www.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=support&prod_type=dc&country=SG (just select your camera model).
