is it worth its price? do you guys recommend it?

i want one because i hate it when skin oil goes to the lcd. especially when friends borrow my camera.. but, i read in some sites that the eyepiece extender reduces your viewfinder magnification by 30%.. im using a 350D pala..

a little help would be highly appreciated...

i'm using one but i am not sure of the viewfinder's magnification reduction thing. my only issue is that the eyepiece has bigger chance of faling since it protrude a bit than the normal, it snaps to your clothes easily and might fall without you knowing.

I use one. It's ok. yun lang nga like mon says nakaprotrude siya. but in my case, it hasn't fallen off my camera because of snagging my clothes or something.

that's my problem too,, it happened to me thrice,, good thing i always found it at the floor,, parc suggested to me to mighty bond the extender to the actual eyepiece ( not to the body),, the only problem to this is you will have to let go your eyepiece extender when you sell your body,, ( or buy another cam,( same eyepiece slot as your old cam) take it then replace it to your old one,, )

Hi Darryl! I think it's called the diotric adjustment knob. :)

It's the diopter adjustment. :)

What's your eyesight grade Glenn?

Even the diopter adjustment won't compensate for people with high eye grades. :(

I'm at 500/450 and the diopter doesn't do diddly squat. ~__~

Hmmm... a "graded" filter or focusing screen for eyesight might not be a bad idea, hehe.

But it might be easier just to get this extender or contacts. Too bad for me I have 2 different grades for the left and the right and 2 different astigmatism grades for both as well. Hayyy.

Eyepiece extender it is. :/

glenn,
i'm reading my camera manual :) ...if the desired focus cannot be achieved with the built in diopter adjustment control. There's an accessory called diopter adjustment lenses, test first before you purchase to make sure it will work for you.

thats something new:).thanks!

but id rather have something to help me see more comfortably while wearing the glasses since i also use my left eye to scan the scene while my right is on the viewfinder

i agree with randall, i have a 275/250 eye vision, and i wear an eyeglasses. when i take it off, the diopter adjustment can't clear my vision, but when i wear it again, the diopter manages to compensate with eyeglass, it's almost on the boundary that i think if i have a more high graded eyes, i think it's still blurry, like what randall said.

Hi Jom,

I currently own an eyepiece extender and yes i think it does reduce the magnification im not sure by how much though because the scene looks farther away with the extender on than without it. but its no big deal you can easily adjust to it:)

haven't encountered those extender snagging on to your clothes

hope this helps in your decision:D

another option so you wont glue it, is to wind a piece of black nylon thread to tighten the grip then insert the eyepiece extender. just make sure you check on it from time to time.

I actually love the reduced magnification when I got the extender. It seems easier to compose a scene this way. But that's just me. :D

Funny how I found this thread abt something that has intrigued me for several years now.

I first came across the eyepiece extender abt five years back when I bought my first film camera by canon at a mall and yes it did indeed reduce magnification on the viewfinder. The salesperson said its not supposed to. Anyway the "scientist" in me told me to buy it and I eventually removed the lens on it but still placed it on the eyepice. It serves its purpose now which is to prevent oil from the nose sticking on to the cameras back (with normal magnification). Yes, it does tend to get loose if it snags on clothes or if hit with fingers/hands.

Fastforward 2006, bought my first digital cam at Hidalgo, was offered the eyepiece again(same model) by a salesperson. Out of curiosity, tested it, and lo, and behold, magnification was the same as when there was no extender!

My query: could there have been a defect in older eyepiece extender lenses which causes the magnification to lessen rather than remain the same??

BTW, i didnt buy this second one YET, I was short. need ur opinion guys.

it would be better if you specify the digital cam you use 2006,, but i sense something that mulder and scully should investigate,,

Its just a 350D. The EX-EP15 I tried is the same model that I bought way back for the film cam. Hmmm......EX-(files?):D

I actually use one coz I saw PARC using it two years ago. Yes, it does reduce magnification of your eyesight as the image in the viewfinder becomes smaller, thus you see lesser details. My brother suggested to me that I take out the small glass inside the eyepiece extender. I threw it out. The extender is very handy as it doesnt make my face touch the lcd anymore. I am holding the cam conveniently far from my face now.

My input, I bought it, returned it the next day, I could not live with the smaller image in the viewfinder due to the crop factor (1.2 i think). (to start with the viewfinder is small as is) The oil from your nose in the LCD, just put those crystal clear plastic protectors found in cellular shops, then wipe away as much as you like.

So, removing the lens on the extender will prevent the 30% reduction on the view finder???

Is it easy to take off or will it void warranty???

I gaffered the eyepiece to the extender as it does make your eyepiece fall off easily.

this is a bit OT but if you guys are looking for an eyepiece extender that wond reduce magnification, rather increase magnification...check out echostore's KPS magnifying eyepiece extender..i've heard a lot of great things about it...haven't tried it out yet though

canon's eyepiece extender does decrease magnification a bit which is the reason why i held on to buying it

David Tong

increasing magnification reduces field of coverage and you'll deal with more parallax errors. So take a pick.

Im a fan of using eyepiece extender on my camera, for a reason do avoid sweat from my LCD and feel im more in focus when i using an eye piece extender.

This is what i do. I remove the plastic magnification inside the extender use precision screw to remove it. Then you got the usual magnification of your camera. It works for me.
