View Full Version : 18-200 barrel shake
paul borromeo 06-25-2006, 07:10 PM Hi All,
Im not sure what its called but I have noticed just today that on my 18-200 VR, before the autofocus locks in, the frame does a noticeable 1 or 2 x shake but after a while it goes away, then when i shoot again, i see the shake again.
parang kumakalog?
i tried my 70-300 and it is as steady as a rock.
after taking out my 70-300 and replacing the 18-200 on the d200 body, it wasnt there anymore (i hope)
any thoughts or remedies?
thanks and all the best,
Paul
paul borromeo 06-25-2006, 07:37 PM follow up:
when i power up and the switch is on autofocus even with VR off, the viewfinder shakes but when it is on M, it doesnt.
I got this in bangkok do you think columbia will take it in under warranty?
any remedies?
tj_parpan 06-25-2006, 08:21 PM I was about to say it's the VR kicking in, but since you said the viewfinder shakes even with VR off, it may be something else. Does the shake affect the images?
rosalie_gomez 06-25-2006, 09:22 PM I was about to say the same thing re VR working but when you said you switched lens and when you place it back, it was gone... I guess it's not the VR then. Re warranty, is it official Nikon? If it is, then it's covered by international warranty so you can bring it to Columbia. :)
paul borromeo 06-25-2006, 09:53 PM thanks rosalie. now whenever I power up there are 4 thuds when the autofocus is on. when it is off, the viewfinder is steady. no effect on the images but it interferes in the composition at times when you need to capture the moment. ill scout for the warranty as i got it from an official nikon reseller.
thanks all
paul borromeo 06-25-2006, 09:59 PM TJ and Rosalie,
thank you for the effort. everytime i power on, there are 4 thuds and a viewfinder shake even with VR OFF. however, if the AFS is off and in the manual position, there are no thuds. weird.
rosalie_gomez 06-26-2006, 08:20 AM "4 thuds when you power up"? Looks like there is indeed something wrong with your lens. :( Mine does not make any noise when I turn on the camera.
Lyndon_L_Ong 06-26-2006, 10:20 AM or maybe...
you turned off your camera when the VR is still working. The manual says you'll hear a some sort of clanking sound if you did this kinda thing...
paul borromeo 06-26-2006, 11:39 AM hi lyndon and rosalie. normally my VR is on. i dont see a problem with the VR but when the camera is turned on, there are 4 thuds that I hear and feel in the lens barrel which makes the viewfinder shake. this is with AFS on but with AFS off, the viewfinder is steady and no thuds. when i put it on auto, the thuds kick in. weird.
thanks for the efforts guys.
Ali Mangaliag 06-26-2006, 04:55 PM if the lens is bought from a nikon authorized dealer... for sure, there is at least a year of international warranty... :)
paul borromeo 06-26-2006, 07:47 PM hi ali, i asked Columbia today.
they havent experienced this problem,
they dont have the tools to fix this problem and will need to send the unit to HK
and they wont cover the warranty as it was bought outside the Philippines in an authorized dealer in Bangkok.
poor me
rosalie_gomez 06-26-2006, 08:01 PM @paul
Guess it's not a surprise that Columbia can't fix it since they can't fix AF-S lenses. They usually send the lens to HK or Singapore. When you bought your lens, did it come with a Nikon warranty card? Because if it did, then Columbia should cover it since lenses are International Warranty. :)
paul borromeo 06-26-2006, 11:47 PM hi ali, this is what they told me but that I had to send it back to the original merchant which in this case is in bangkok.
thanks for the efforts and the input.
paul borromeo 06-26-2006, 11:49 PM hi rosalie,
it did come with a card but columbia wont cover the warranty. this is of course over the phone since Im in davao. they advised me to send it back to the original merchant which I found very strange.
any thoughts on other alternatives?
tj_parpan 06-27-2006, 06:28 AM Paul, maybe we can try out your camera when you come over in July to see what's "wrong" with it, before you send it back. Try e-mailing Nikon Singapore about the problem and if they'll cover your unit's warranty. I'm going there end of July and can bring your lens if they'll service. I got their e-mail from this site http://www.nikon.com.sg/ but it doesn't seem to be loading now. Nikon Singapore is much better at honoring warranties I think.
Just found the e-mail address: "Nikon Singapore" <nikonsg@nikon-asia.com>
paul borromeo 06-27-2006, 07:37 AM thanks TJ,
ill take you up on that. now to find that yellow card......

I'll ask my friend who is a distributor for Columbia, maybe he can shed light on this. The only thing I can think of is they're expecting the lens needs to be replaced, so easier to have it replaced where you bought it? Will keep you updated if I find out anything.
In the meantime, you should check with Nikon Singapore. :)
paul borromeo 06-28-2006, 07:53 AM thanks rosalie.
paul borromeo 09-13-2006, 10:03 PM ok guys,
update on my 18-200 VR. Good thing that Columbia has now decided to upgrade its service. Tonight a received an e mail update from them. Good going columbia!
However, sad news is that my lens has to be sent to HK for repair as the VR was diagnosed to be the problem.
Ill keep you posted on the latest developments
Cheers!

Anderson did specifically mention your lens during our EB with him last week. I hope their addressing your concern is a sign of good things to come.
Ali Mangaliag 09-14-2006, 09:26 AM that's good news paul....
