Waffy Casem 01-09-2007, 12:12 PM I'm still waiting for my DSL connection to get back to normal before posting pics, it's still screwed up due to the Taiwan quake... nice pics by the way! :D
victor d. chanchico 01-09-2007, 02:11 PM Hi Casey,
Thanks And Waiting For Your Posts And Contribution:) ... Location Mo Please?
JeffAromin 01-09-2007, 04:53 PM always nice pics, victor!
Here's something I shot in my backyard. Any ideas what I can do in PP to enhance it a bit?

victor d. chanchico 01-09-2007, 05:16 PM JEFF,
nice pic contribution here, that's the right vantage point to take a snap with this kind of subject.... now for the enhancements with cs2, try to sharpen the impact of the papaya fruit to the viewer, while the leaves should compliment in the background by taking a light subdued hue or color, wag matapang but discernable. i hope this helps in the enhancement.
mitzpicardal 01-09-2007, 05:27 PM always nice pics, victor!

Nice shot. Good framing. A little bit of CA (purple fringing) visible at this size. No PP needed except for the CA if you print it large.

CA>>>>chromatic aberration, if i'm right and visible in one or few the stems of the leaves and the papaya fruit itself? correct me if i'm wrong :) .
mitzpicardal 01-09-2007, 05:49 PM Yes Vic. Its visible in the leaves and stems due to very high contrast. It's one of the problem of digital P&S. You can remove this with a software (i use PTLens) or in PS CS2 Distort Lens Correction filter.

Was this shot in UP? Galing!
JeffAromin 01-09-2007, 11:12 PM You guys have very sharp eyes! Especially considering it was just flickr's reduced version of the photo!
Couldn't get the distort filter in CS2 to properly take out the fringing.. so I just used the Remove Color Noise filter. Here's the result:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/158/351690109_8d39d099a8.jpg
here's a before and after comparison. It did lose some colors though.

ray ruiz 02-15-2007, 10:41 AM hello victor, nice fz50 set. im selling my d-SLR very soon and d panasonic is on top of my list, can i bother you on a few questions? how much did u buy the fz50 and where? im having a hard time finding one kasi. thanks and happy shooting!
victor d. chanchico 02-15-2007, 11:42 AM @ray,
thanks for the compliment..... i got the fz50 from frays in long beach, california last november for $705 including tax, if you have friends or relatives visiting the US, you can have it brought there, otherwise you can go to infomaxx cyberzone in megamall, last time i asked for the prize its was swinging from p43-45k, try also hidalgo and palanca st. in quiapo with lots of camera stores where it may be cheaper :)

ray ruiz 02-16-2007, 10:41 AM thanks much for the info. henry's daw is selling at 30K, pero it takes 2 weeks to arrive pa. sana i can easily get the macro, flash and extra battery here as well.
victor d. chanchico 02-16-2007, 02:13 PM @ray,
i hope to get an extra battery also due to the one supplied being easily drained after a while... my raynox macro lens was brought via paypal from mcgillhouse in singapore, panasonic accessory lenses costs higher. you may also want to get a higher memory SD card, 1Gb should be enough, the reason, if you will be shooting with RAW format, you will use 19MB of memory per snap, that is if you want to develop your image the way pros do :) .

very good subject..... my only comment... the little crater in the center should have been more emphasized by a clearer shot but its understandable if the surrounding is really foggy at the time, there's just no imposing subject at this time but the elements included in the whole composition could never be better - keep posting :).

ok, have a nice creative journey with your "pana" (to "shoot" down enemies, he he), i have always espoused that no matter what, it's not the pana (your unit) that matters most, it's the "indyan" (u the shooter, the "creator") that matters really :)

victor d. chanchico 03-05-2007, 08:05 AM @ waffy,
very good pictures especially 1,2 and last post (not my candidate though, he he), indicating your developing snapping prowess :), the tattoo punk artist is a jewel, for improvement >>> the subject as a whole reveals his personality but to bring out the soul of the subject - reveal his face with a nice angled shot maybe a little lower than your original vantage point sort of upward inclination, my piece of throwing the "pandesal" and not the "pandesal in a "garapon", he he, ....... i remember you also have the fz50?

victor d. chanchico 03-05-2007, 08:34 AM fellow dpp members, especially those in this thread and visiting guests, its becoming a concern that no C&C (Comments & Criticism) are being posted in reply to a picture shown thus not fostering improvement in one's photo skill be it composition wise or "technical" >>> a dreaded part especially to those starting up and also those just sheer enjoying the hobby and don't care about EXIF, etc. ..... i hope i had not offended anyone and i always try to be objective in my comments.... i will not comment on the technical aspect of the photo but merely on the composition and elements included and other things to improve the picture.
as for my posts, you can throw the most brutal, frank and honest criticism you can hurl and see what i have in store for you in return.... just an honest :), he he he.....after all no one can beat me in terms of criticizing my photo work, i'm my best and worst critique :). so are you up to this task? then let's start the ball roling.....
Waffy Casem 03-05-2007, 03:24 PM Thanks for comments! I wasn't able to take other pics of that tattoo dude, he saw me na after I took that pic and I think na-conscious na sya.. hehehe
I'm very much open to C&C too, so you could really say anything about my pics! That's the reason why I joined DPP anyway, to learn from you guys!
Waffy Casem 03-05-2007, 03:35 PM I think this picture shows the limitation of our cameras, some noise is already visible here. What ISO did you use? Still a nice pic though! :)

victor d. chanchico 03-05-2007, 03:49 PM @waffy,
it's more of a pp (post processing/production) glitch in my part, "human error", if you will, <<< u can always get away with this most abused cause of crime :), sort of trying to do ala HDR (high dynamic range) picture but came up with this w/o even trying to correct the obvious error, maybe my penchant for sort of digital art where some parts are done as they are, to be interpreted by one as visible noise (for purists) and maybe by others as part of the over-all design :).
panasonic has Iiso - intellligent ISO setting which i usually use, if not, ISO100, still experimenting on the use of the higher ones.
thanks.
Waffy Casem 03-05-2007, 04:23 PM Oh ok, I thought the noise was caused by a high ISO setting. :D I usually work with ISO 100 or 200, sometimes 400.. anything higher than that, pang friendster nalang!
Have you guys tried using any noise-reducing software/plug-ins like Noise Ninja? I'm not quite happy with the noise-reduction in SilkyPix, so I'm looking for software that could help me with that.
victor d. chanchico 03-05-2007, 05:14 PM @waffy,
heard about it but have not tried.
for me, to lessen noise on low light settings, as indicated also in the manual, set "picture adjustment": noise reduction>>>> high
contrast >>>> low
sharpness >> low
saturation >> low
which helped a lot.
Waffy Casem 03-05-2007, 05:47 PM Will try that, thanks for the tip!

victor d. chanchico 03-07-2007, 10:19 PM hi roger,
welcome here.... what "pana" gear are you using?
where was this shot taken?
brutal comment >>> allowed, but not this time, baka hindi na bumalik, di ba WAFFY? :).... anyway, for improvement >>> you might as well post a vertical full shot of the building if you have one to emphasize" height and might" of the subject, other than this you have a very clear shot, more perfect time is to shoot on a cloudy day where overhead crane might "touch" a nimbus or cumulus cloud hanging above in the background to that effect .
keep posting....

Welcome! Keep posting your pics, we surely want to see them! What Panasonic camera do you use?
@Vic
I love the lighting on the 2nd shot, what church is this? :)
victor d. chanchico 03-08-2007, 09:43 AM waffy,
it's a sort of replica of the original St. Peter Church in Rome, it's along Commonwealth Ave., near Batasan area, of course name is St. Peter Church Parish, Quezon City.
yes, i'm for the second shot also.
the third one needs dark foreboding clouds in the above rather than a clear background to have a greater presence or effect :). might re-shoot pictures 1 and 3 later...
Roger Pantuca 03-08-2007, 10:47 AM Hi guys, thanks for the warm welcome. Got my LX2 about a week ago. The building construction is just outside my window in Ortigas and it poses a particular challenge to me because it looks so plain. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll wait for some clouds to add some drama. Hope the summer weather clears up the sky as it always does.
Roger Pantuca 03-08-2007, 02:20 PM I used to have a Pany FX8. I regretted selling it last year and just had to have a wide-angle version.

Roger Pantuca 03-19-2007, 03:35 PM Didn't use a filter, though I wished my LX2 had filter threads coz the sun was really bright, maybe a CPL would have helped. Me & a couple of my friends were waiting for a sunset but the sun got covered with clouds as it was setting. So all we had was an "almost" sunset. Strange how the sunrays looked that day. Even my friend's Canon Ixus captured it just like that. :D
victor d. chanchico 03-19-2007, 05:46 PM @roger,
the clouds were a blessing in disuise for you, you may not have gotten a descent shot if there was none, it was blocking the intense sunrays which were evident even it was sunset already. i may have needed a uv filter or polarizer if i had used my fz50.

victor d. chanchico 03-22-2007, 02:34 PM roger thanks, yeah..the outdoor shootout was done by yours personally to find out if the fz50 has some versatility of usage in all shooting range and capabilities using only its built-in 35-420mm lens and an attachable macro lens. and it did not disappoint me... watch out for more subjects to come from the Eco Park shoot location, thanks for - " I'll show him this thread so he can see for himself what it is capable of in good hands" :SunGlass:.

victor d. chanchico 03-28-2007, 10:24 AM still have to post shots from hongkong trip later, what a price to pay for a name but the technology used is the same, concrete example was the price comparison at hongkong airport between leica v-lux and panasonic fz50, the leica costs hk$7,000 and the panasonic fz50 hk$4,900, there should be a photo comparison in all shooting modes to see if one would be willing to pay an extra $2,100 for the leica kit, for me i would have still welcomed the fz50 with open arms and buy all accessory lens kit with the hk$2,100 i could save :).....
now the Leica L-1 costs hk$20,000 and for the same model features you get the panasonic dmc-l1 for hk$16,000 and you could still get accessories for the hk$4000 you could save.
as for the Leica M8, i think i should shift my sight on this one in the future, he he he :D

victor d. chanchico 03-31-2007, 10:44 PM @casey,
i wish i had the time to go but...... kaliwa't kanan ang outing and also preparing to visit the US:)... for the motor show, anyway, here are suggestions..
1. the cropped human figure is distracting in the first pic, you could improve on this by trying other vantage point that may express the same effect you're trying to achieve.
2. the cropped tire and body of the porsche may not appeal to those who don't know this type of car, it is better to have included all the countours even in the lower body part which would exhibit the car's own distinct design against other known brands, those who know this luxury car brand will not have problem themselves.
3. moving objects in the background at last pic could be eliminated by faster shutter speed or even use of flash.
i wish i can have a virtual photo critique because i don't have much time to attend a formal photography course, otherwise learning by ourselves would only make us improve inch by inch not feet by feet or much better, by leaps and bounds :)
any correction on the above observations are welcomed.

victor d. chanchico 04-03-2007, 09:39 PM @waffy,
that was the very ideal instance as i saw it after reviewing the shot in lcd preview, but, the moment you wait for that to happen, the bird would have gone away and the area was teeming with recreationists just 3-5 mins after taking the shot with the tables overflowing with food and baskets, he he he, so this was a case of trade off on less clutter now or more clutter later :)

victor d. chanchico 04-07-2007, 07:39 AM hi marty,
welcome here :)
victor d. chanchico 04-07-2007, 11:44 AM Every Holy Thursday the churches all over are filled and over-flowing with visitors doing their yearly Station of the Cross prayers.
It is a tradition observance for us and a time for me to test the fz50 in low light condition where its noise reduction capability would be exhibited. Being new to this camera, I was pondering what settings to use that would cater to my shooting needs in this type of environment.
I was really in need of a fast and responsive setting because we were pressed for time, we were set to cover 2 stations for seven churches and an extra station that would be the coolest one - "Iceberg" station, as usual, at the end of every Holy Thursday church visit :).
And so the cliche, "necessity is the mother of invention" but in my case its "discovery in times of necessity". I wanted to capture the inside of churches without using a single flash so that only natural light bouncing on walls and other objects would be reflected on the photo, with a flash, much of the details would be lost in the background, finally after much testing, I had this setting..... ISO = 400, Picture Setting >> Low Saturation, Low Contrast, High Noise Reduction, Polarizing Lens, Programmed Priority set to Auto Focus mode. The thing that permitted a fast shooting mode was really the ISO set to 400.
Pictures post processed with Silky Pix Raw Developer, Noise Ninja and Photoshop. Photos produced were noted to have purple fringing and the usual noise associated with P&S cams. Some group in DPReview were petitioning Panasonic to release a software that would shut down the Venus III noise reduction engine. I wonder what could be achieved by this effort.

trying out a B/W conversion workflow using Render Light and some tone mapping
Waffy Casem 04-12-2007, 10:38 PM Nice shot... she's glowing! :D I'm interested in your PP, you mind posting the orig pic for us to see? :) Thanks!
victor d. chanchico 04-13-2007, 08:05 AM hello @waffy, roger :)
jetlag pa ako, kadarating ko lang dito sa vegas kahapon, sakit ng katawan sa mahabang biyahe :(
roger, ayos ang tone mapping mo, free download ba yang Render Light? meron kasi ako image and want to render it in better B&W software, it's a native Ita mother and child image taken on an office outing in zambales and i want it looking better than if only processed with my sikypix and cs2 ware.
victor d. chanchico 04-13-2007, 08:19 AM @waffy,
a helpful advice if you are to get accessory lens kit for your unit - macro, wide angle and telephoto lens, if you started with raynox, then stick with it. i was in a hurry to buy additional wide angle lens in my last hongkong visit and i got a "focus optic" brand. well i'm disappointed with my purchase, iba talaga ang raynox brand as been proven with my macro shots with their raynox dcr-250 supermacro lens.
i might get the raynox wide angle lens here later, only then will i be satisfied :), sana.
also, had to detach and bring the kit lens of my manual canon eos500n slr, it's a 28-80mm ef canon lens and i would hope to test it with a canon 400d body dslr, i think they are compatible and maybe even better than the standard kit of 18(28)-55mm that goes with it for $800, with the body, it's only $700. talking about moving early to a true dslr, he he, just pondering right now because i want to expand my shooting range in terms of light availability, our panasonic fz-50 just don't capture it good when light is very low or not that sufficient, but with good light and macro shooting, i'm hands up with it.
anyway, there's no cost for pondering and wishing, only when i'm faced with the unit itself will the impulsive juice start grinding and hurl me on a spending binge, i hope its not too soon :).
erniemacaso 04-13-2007, 10:02 AM Hi Guys,
Am new here and have just recently purchased the FZ50 which I find a very good camera as it takes good images and have a lot of features (12x optical, OIS, 10 megapixels). However, as I have decided to become more serious about photography and have limited budget for only a single camera, I am at a dilema to dispose of my FZ50 to buy a Nikon D50. So if anyone is interested, I am selling the FZ50 at 25k. For your info, it was bought only last 11 March 2007 at Ansons Appliances in Makati and carries the 1 year warranty (I will give the receipt to the buyer). It is definitely in mint condition and I am only bearing the loss as it was an impulse buy. Nothing wrong with it and I just want to move up to a DSLR camera and need the cash. Has the box, manuals, CD, etc everything in the package when I bought it. If there are serious buyers here, the price is still negotiable.
Roger Pantuca 04-13-2007, 12:57 PM I'm trying to re-trace the steps so I could do a larger print but it seems I can't quite get the exact same tone. Here goes anyway.
1) The original pic was flat because the sun was shining on the lens and I should have covered it with my hands like a lens hood. Luckily there was no flare but the contrast was very low in the original shot.
2) In Photoshop CS2 I duplicated the background into a layer and applied "Render Light" (its under the Filters menu) in the new layer. I used 3 light sources -- one large spotlight pointing downwards to her face, and 2 smaller ones on the ground. Then I adjusted the opacity of the new layer to about 40-60%. At this point its already a useable image but I wanted the texture in the background to come out.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/202/457313155_c6e794bee1_o_d.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/184/457313157_9bb5be08d5_o.jpg
3) Here's where it gets tedious. I'm sure this would have been easier with the Pro edition of Photomatix but I only have the freeware version. So I save 3 copies of the image with 2/3 stop exposure difference, load it into Photomatix, then save it as an HDR file. Then I use QTPFSGUI (freeware) to perform Fattal tone-mapping on the HDR file.
4) I use the tone-mapped image to selectively dodge and burn the background of image #2.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/202/457313161_bf06a48210_o.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/181/457313171_42dcd84fb4_o.jpg
5) Then I convert to B&W in CS2 using channel mixer.
In hindsight, I probably could have saved a lot of effort if I skipped the tone-mapping step, if I knew how to extract the texture without using HDR.
victor d. chanchico 04-13-2007, 05:22 PM @roger,
really complicated procedure, the freeware to perform Fattal tone mapping is the only one i do not have, i am able to save 3 exposure values with my silkypix and the rest of the pp with cs2, i might also try to employ optikverve filter if there is a useful setting, also the dodge and burn will be helpful.
might as well post the result here later........ thanks for the effort and keep the creative juices flowing on this thread :)
good good job.
Roger Pantuca 04-13-2007, 06:56 PM BTW, here's a good how-to on B&W conversion.
http://www.prime-junta.net/pont/How_to/n_Digital_BW/a_Digital_Black_and_White.html
I'm a big fan of B&W, especially for printing.
Waffy Casem 04-13-2007, 07:26 PM @Roger
Wow! Thanks for the detailed explanation! :D I might try that sometime, pag sinipag! Hehe...
@Victor
Thanks for the tip! I was actually thinking of getting a raynox macro lens like yours, but I decided not to spend that much on my FZ50 since I plan to upgrade later on. I am interested in getting 55mm filters though, it's around 400+ Pesos lang, and I think it could add really internesting effects on my photos without much PP. :)
I guess we'll be waiting on your vegas pics, taken on your FZ50... or 400D na ba? Hehehe... :)

My comments: That's a nice candid shot, although I would have preferred a different angle, perhaps one that would show more of the view outside the window. Maybe a little sunlight on her face would also be nice... but waiting for that moment to happen while pointing the camera at her may destroy that moment. Hehe...
@Roger
Any PP done here? The colors are so vivid! Might look better with a bit more sunlight, or a bee moving over it, or even droplets of water. ;)
Just my opinions guys, I hope you don't mind. :D
Ok, my turn... I got bored last Sunday, and shot this while my girlfriend was taking a nap. I know it's not that good, nothing is really going on here, I just want to know what you guys think about it. The noise is because it was shot at ISO 800, and we know where the FZ50 lacks. Shot RAW, PP was done with Photoshop CS2's Camera RAW plug-in, plus a little dodge and burn.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/181/461478201_b15f45cad0.jpg
Roger Pantuca 04-17-2007, 09:52 PM Waffy, I like the concept & angle on the toe shot. Its hard to make everyday things look interesting, and that one seems to give birth to the concept of a "toe" gallery. I did some PP work on the flower shot as I always do.
Victor, "Aged Abode" is full of texture. I pass by places like that and always wanted to shoot it. Racquel's portrait has lots of detail in the shadows. Hope you don't mind, I experimented with it by rendering a spotlight and it can look like a studio shot.
victor d. chanchico 04-18-2007, 04:49 AM @waffy, almost everything is fine with me with your gf's "toe" shot, an improvement would be if the other ones in the background were not cropped, , if this was not permitted w/ another vantage point, with same distance and dof, or due to limitations on the camera then you got it right. the noise is pleasant at this time because it gives life to the composition as a whole and where else would you render it than B&W which adds more flavor on the subject with its visible lines and patterns.
@roger, you can try your macro shot setting in your unit and just a snap of one or two on the fore subjects and compare what appeals to you the most :). as for Raquel's photo... i'm waiting for that "studio shot" lighting and rendering, i myself has yet to experiment with this photoshop feature.... as for my take, i really intended to capture it with just the natural light coming from the glass window, i tried to have her face nearer the natural sunlight but it was too harsh at the time which could have given me poor result, it was already past 10 am, if it was earlier say 9-9:30am, then her face would be bathed with sunlight.... but here's the rest of Racquel again ....

Roger Pantuca 04-18-2007, 10:03 AM Hope I didn't overdo it, I just noticed the window as light source seem to have a similar effect as a softbox.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/198/463500656_087e918581_o.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/197/463511862_8dd876fe10_o.jpg
victor d. chanchico 04-19-2007, 04:20 AM @roger,
good job, the face was lightened and had more features revealed and so was the background, i was really relying just on the natual light coming from the window and there was no other light source except from room light from the opposite side which is bounded by see-thru glass infront....the picture was taken on sepia tone setting which originally i intended to peserve and didn't bother to convert to B&W.. i would really try this technique to know how to infuse light rendering on subjects using a processing software especially when more light source is needed to reveal major and important aspect of the subject.... i understand you had used photoshop only in processing this...the softbox you mentioned might be true because all the light sources although coming from the window had different effect once these lights entered the room as some would have bounced on the floor and the walls and other objects inside, anyway, thanks a lot for the improvement, truly an instructive effort on your part which will now become part of the learning curve for us :)
victor d. chanchico 04-19-2007, 04:53 AM here's what waffy was hoping for..... a face bathed with sunlight.... this was an officemate also... taken at around past 9am so the light source is not yet that harsh, Racquel's picture shoot followed at past 10 and so different treatment as it is...

welcome here :)... we do not cater to any particular type of photography so any new contribution is very much appreciated ... only thing though is to make use of the panasonic brand of camera unit which we are patronizing at the moment, we are not endorsing it, but, we rather explore all the possibilities that we can derive from employing it for the good and advancement of this very fulfilling hobby which we all have in common :).
let us see more of that still life you're into... if you can also indicate what various processing technique you had employed on the image above... the shadow play makes it interesting and the light behind makes for an after-burner like powerful thrust... very good concept here :).

victor d. chanchico 05-01-2007, 10:28 AM @jan michael,
and i'm pious with your angel shot here :) ... the wings were emphasized by right light angling and face is lightened also for that right effect... how about the halo lightened as a thin circular rim white light? but you may have had it in mind then and tried also and would have required additional separate light source to produce the effect.
Jan Michael L. Dayoja 05-01-2007, 11:51 AM @victor,
hahaha... thanks for that comment! :)
i was thinking of creating an effect on the halo with proper positioning of the light.. it's quite hard to find the exact position.. and yes, it would require an additional light source, but the problem is i dont have any stands for the light or any support of some sort.. :(
anyway, i'll be posting another still life.. hope you guys would like it..

victor d. chanchico 05-04-2007, 03:17 AM @jan michael,
let me see .... this is all about lighting ... you used 3 types of light bulb and from the image poduced, the orange was cast in the right side because its a warm color and in the center is the green bulb to neutralize and fade the orange tone and then at the leftmost is the white light .... producing a warm to subdued or white to fade (is this ok? :) ) result as seen from right to left again..... i see that the use of this 3 type of light bulb color should be executed in that order to produce the needed effect, otherwise a disorderly lighting placement would result to chaos  , nice still life here.

do we have other female posters here, it's a once in a blue moon that we have female guests here, it's an honor and we're in luck today:D ... where are the other ladies using panasonic here in dpp, he he he? can we see your produce? your techniques and favorite photo subjects are most welcome.

I use canon most of the time but the FZ30 is one wicked cam. I recommend it to friends and relatives who want a value for money camera.

your photo, desert beauty, is trully a beauty in the desert! Hahaha!!
it's actually beautiful, and i like the composition, using the sunlight to create a wonderful effect on the flower.. the focusing is great and DOF is just perfect!! :)
@tammy,
welcome!!!!!
you have great shots at cosmo party!!!! I can't find any NOISE in those photos!
the 2nd photo shows a dark area at the lower part.. i suggest removing the lens hood when taking pics using flash or it's better to have a ext flash!
actually, you can get rid off those darken areas even if you're using the lens hood..
how to do it? easy.. use your zoom lens!! if you're shooting in wide, you can see the darken area since the flash captures the shadow of the lens hood, but if you are taking photos using zoom, poof! is't like a magic! darken area is gone!
it's an amateur advice! hehehe
MORE PICS TAMMY!!!!!:)

@jan michael,
thanks for cc and the suggestion on the dark cast in the image discussed, it's a help in reminding us in those situation, although i myself had encountered this before and just the same, my remedy was to step further backward and use the zoom w/o removing the hood.

What do you mean by stroll? street photography? I like street and docu. FZ30 is a great cam in the discreet department but I find it a bit slow compared to Canon

yes, get busy outdoors not indoors :), for your craft's sake, he he he.
cute cop you have there, though his head attire immitates that of someone on the other side of the law .
anyway, to maximize your street photography, i suggest you go out and find the nearest spots in your place - the "talipapa" (makeshift market) would be an enticing place, a mini-park or plaza (w/ historical significance would be better but not necessary), shanties, a new/old big or small church among others, these places are more real and close to my heart than compared to what i see here in vegas sans the beautiful blondes, brunette or red heads, he he he.
victor d. chanchico 05-06-2007, 06:53 AM whew, the Olympus E-410 is a very enticing dslr for me primarily on the live preview and dust cleaning feature ... but wait, here's a sniff for panasonic afficionados :) ....
from DPreview forum:
Panasonic plans to release a second digital single-lens reflex camera
this year.
Another snip:
a few specifics on the new model:
• It will have a resolution of at least 10 megapixels.
• It will have Live View, letting photographers preview shots on
the camera's display as well as frame shots through the viewfinder.
• It will employ Panasonic's image-stabilization technology, which
shifts the sensor to counteract camera shake.
• It will feature a mechanism to clean the sensor of dust.
• It will be available with a Leica lens.
wooo, better wait and compare it with the e-410 side by side, but maybe the difference would just be the lens used, anyway, these are consumer type true dslr and geared towards a larger market, in the end, the one with a better price figure would be the winner for me ..... shifting my sight from the d80:Thinking: :D
Waffy Casem 05-06-2007, 01:38 PM I hope Panasonic would improve the sensor on that one to reduce noise and improve performance at higher ISO levels... like you, I'm also thinking of getting a Nikon D80, but I don't think I'm ready to part with my FZ50 just yet. Hehe.. I might get a D40 with my FZ50 as backup instead. Hmmm.....
BTW, care to share some street shots of those blondes, brunettes and red heads? Hehe..
victor d. chanchico 05-06-2007, 02:23 PM @waffy,
remember we're talking about a true dlsr which includes a different sensor than what they employ with prosumer or digicam P&S, i'm sure it would be no different to the type, maybe in sensor size, to what these major players are using so it would be a great departure from what we have right now in our fz50, a big big improvement in the sensor and what you said, the ISO performance. plus lenses would be replaceable and not worrying about the dust that may slip in with the sensor dust remover.
our fz50 would still be a formidable backup if we truly have a dslr later because we have unit with lens of 35-420mm, always ready and waiting on the side and smoking hot, how about that.
about your request, i only get to encounter a lot are "common folks" around here, sadly, he hehe, our very good subjects are mostly in the hotels, restaurants, bar, casino, some in church during sundays, no image yet here unfortunately.
Jan Michael L. Dayoja 05-07-2007, 09:01 AM Street shots!!! interesting!!! i'll be posting some of my street shots from baguio, just got home from an event which we played last saturday at VOCAS, in session road.. it's actually a great place! good people, good food (vegetarian), and we played good music!!
@waffy, good thing you're back! i thought this thread is dying.. i just hope that even if some of us, panasonic users, will shift from another camera would still post their photos here.. :) :(
victor d. chanchico 05-07-2007, 09:37 AM @jan michael,
we're just contemplating if ever we move to a true dslr, as our unit, the fz50 acts and performs already like a true dslr, the only difference is in the size of the sensor used and the removable lens.... we might retain the fz50 later as a powerful back-up unit then, i'm not keen to dispose it as i had already obtained a macro lens (raynox dcr250) and a wide angle lens (focus optics .45x) accessory.
we will also be waiting for the 2nd dslr to be release by panasonic, the first one was the pricey dmc-l1, and, compare it with another system, the olympus e-410, because these two manufacturers have teamed-up already before and collaborated in the design and features of their P&S and dslr offerings.
and also, i miss baguio, so get going with your posting mr. musician :)
haven't touched regularly lately my celebrity ovation cherry cherry burst cut-away electric acoustic which i left here in vegas during my last visit last oct. '06, if i could only dispose it here to additionally furnish in my dslr acquisition in the future :), bye bye mariachi, hello digital shooter me, he he he.
victor d. chanchico 05-08-2007, 07:00 AM hey people, this one's at best buy.....
Nikon d40 kit with two Zoom-Nikor lenses, 18-55mm and 55-200mm @ $799 less $50 savings .... any positive or negative feedback?
I think i would pass and wait for the new panasonic dlsr to come in the market by july.
but then if it was a d40X, wheww, 10.2mp instead of 6.1mp and the two lenses, wheww...
better yet stay indoors and avoid these temptations :)
Waffy Casem 05-08-2007, 02:13 PM @victor
The D40 is a great camera, only problem I see with it is that it doesn't have an AF motor... with those 2 lenses, I think that's a pretty sweet deal! :)
@jan michael
Where in Session Rd. is Vicos? Or do you mean Vizcos? I'm gonna be going home to Baguio this weekend eh. :D
victor d. chanchico 05-09-2007, 01:48 AM @waffy,
for entry level stuff it would be canon 400d, beyond this would be the nikon d80, otherwise if to stick with a live preview dslr camera then it's the olympus e-510, if not, then wait for the new panasonic dslr release to compare it with, he he he.

it's my cousin's wedding, this the time she's been waiting for 6 years of engagement..
this is my first try of being an unofficial amateur wedding photographer.. hahahaha!
my DMC-FZ30 isn't actually suited for this kind of photography... a lot of blurred images and NOISE
appeared in my photos... grrrr... but still, few shots are quite sharp and well exposed.. as expected,
my memory card got full, i knew this is gonna happen but didn't expect its going to be that fast..
i didn't have any back-up card, so i used my phone's memory card (MMC).. this card is too slow,
what i did was putting back my sd card reviewing shots while the wedding is in progress, losing precious
time, and deleting photos that are really not a good shot..
i now learn something new in photography, always have BACKUP!!! yesterday, i just bought a backup sd card in case of memory low in my camera (thanks to my girlfriend).. next thing to buy is a battery pack and soon a new dslr to use for fast processing of images and using my FZ30 as a backup...
here are the shots on the wedding..

I'm in Baguio now, a friend of mine told me about Vocas. I might drop by some time, probably after working on a few projects here. Before going to Baguio, I also shot during a wedding, also had a hard time with my cam. I really think my DSLR purchase is coming soon na. Hehe.. by the way, the 2nd guy from the right of your wedding group shot was my classmate back in high school. Is he your relative?
victor d. chanchico 05-17-2007, 04:24 AM @waffy,
ohhh shoot, i'd seen the olympus e-410 personally here along "the strip" in vegas las night, it was really compact and lightweight, maybe the only one in it's class right now, and a true dslr at that, i hope panasonic will launch their own right away and not wait 'til july as oly would make a dent in their target consumer market. hey, panasonic, wake up, oly will be eating a chunk of the market very soon, you'll soon find out late, he he he.
many p&s afficionados will point this way in their future dslr acquisition, i tell you, this should not be overlooked, camera companies, i'm a prime example, nye he he he.
how about that, an all-around, take-it-with-you anywhere dslr camera, day and night condition. i don't mind anyone of the two brands i will acquire in the future, surely the only difference maybe the lens used and the pricing. a better price figure among these two would surely be my winner  .

when someone has to choose between what comes first when you have $1,300+ in your
disposal and have the following as your choices, this is at bestbuy here:
* nikon d40x 10.2mp dslr with 18-55mm nikkor zoom lens + sb-600 flash >>> $999+tax
* canon rebel 400d xti 10.1mp dslr with 18-55mm + 75-300mm canon lens >>> $999+tax
* nikon d80 10.2mp dslr with 18-135mm nikkor zoom lens >>> $1299+tax
can you guess what i had picked? and what would have you picked yourself and why?
and now, for the answer, any of your choices above was for nought, he he he, as this was what i had picked:
a toshiba satellite laptop replacing the old one i got here which will eventually be shipped backed home for my sister's usage...... foregoing again my dlsr acquisition in the future, as really i maybe aching to see first that panasonic 2nd dslr release and hold it against the oly e-510 or 410, may i request panasonic to have their release feature an articulating swivel lcd which i had been accustomed to in my composition of subjects, plsss, plsss, plsss, he he he.
anyway, here's the toshiba specs which i really really need at this time: intel centrino duo, 2gb ram, 200gb hard disk, 15.4" tru-brite display, SD card slot reader, built-in web cam/mic and windows "ultimate" vista os
all the image processing softwares performs fast right now and the raw/jpeg images remains in my unit not on an external hard disk, for the time being, and also not on slow-to-read cd's as what i have currently, i could not ask for more.
hmm, wonder if i really made the right acquisiton:Thinking:, there goes myself again:Grin: .

victor d. chanchico 05-28-2007, 03:22 PM hi jan,
like i said, forgone muna at antayin yung second dslr release ng panasonic by july, yung una is L-1 di ba. if the sensor would be the same as the first and it would be a new 10mp as opposed to 7.5 dun sa nauna, its worth waiting:), plus the other features such as dust cleaner, articulating swivel lcd and the leica lens, etc., mass consumer target market so that means affordable to the pocket :), dapat lower than the price of the L-1.

your last image, where is this located? i like also to take pictures at night provided there is adequate lighting, otherwise, unusable lang, high noise talaga. makati ba yan? what do you use now for your noise reduction? i like the colored lights traced by moving vehicles. there was this previous thread using one colored subject and the rest of the image is in full mono, how do you call this processing technique pala? it's what you're much into these days ba?

the toshiba satellite costs me $1,300 tax included. i went for this instead of the macbook pro because i'm accustomed to window-based softwares plus with previous unit of the same brand.

it's really hard creating infrared technique with ps cs2, i tried it in some of my photos, the result is not that good.. hehehe..:) however, i have used the infrared technique in the skies in my landscape photography entitled horizon.. this one turned out good or should i say better with my other photos i have done with ir technique in ps..

i like the color of the sky and the way the cab tilts whle turning..
although, the photo is a little underexposed, the silhouette of the trees are not that visible:(
what image quality are you using in taking photos?:)
victor d. chanchico 06-04-2007, 04:20 AM jan,
the fz50 shoots in the following format: jpeg only and raw+jpeg, i use the latter one. the initial jpeg i use for initial viewing, and the raw, i process with the silkypix raw developer that comes with the unit. the processed raw image is also converted to final jpeg format, that's what i store as my final image and also for uploading to the web. the original jpeg that comes with the raw...i just delete it.

Jan Michael L. Dayoja 06-04-2007, 01:55 PM victor,
i have tried shooting in RAW but i couldn't open this format in photoshop CS2, only jpegs and tiff.. what could be the problem?
victor d. chanchico 06-04-2007, 02:02 PM jan,
i myself was trying to do this and i failed also. i think it was not possible. Adobe Camera Raw is attached ata with Adobe Bridge, that's why. Also Adobe Lightroom is the company's premier RAW format developer software available. It is a stand-alone application not attached to CS2/3 or Bridge.
i hope this enlightens something, or i stand corrected :).

I guess the problem is that, CS doesn't recognized the raw format from your cam, try updating the raw driver. You can try this link: http://www.softwarepatch.com/graphics/photoshop-raw.html
I have the same problem before when I got my D40. Hope this solves the problem.
aa.
victor d. chanchico 06-07-2007, 03:22 PM armand,
thanks a lot for enlightening us. i did not bothered to solve that dilemma because i was perfectly happy with the silky pix raw image developer.

i like the 2nd picture of the panning effect, only the front part of the bus is focused, and the rest, blurred.. nice shot there victor!:)
i've tried panning shots before, i'l try to look for it then post it..
also, i'd like to suggest if we can make a theme every week/month in our thread using panasonic cameras.. what do you think?
