Here's my dilemma. Im just starting out with 'digital photography' and Ive been telling my dad (i cant afford one, still a student) to get me a new camera. I have two in mind: Lumix FZ50 and Canon 350D. The thing with the Lumix fz50 is that it has live view, free angle lcd, 12x optical zoom and mega OIS. However the lens is not interchangeable. With the 350D, the lenses are interchangeable. And the fact that it is an SLR and i can 'accessorize' it later on. Please help, i dont know what to get. Thanks in advance.

if you really want to save money maybe you might settle for a prosumer,, talked to someone who has a sony prosumer (h3 ata) dami din accessories ( it also has a lot of accessories like filter, wide angle less, fisheye ( DIY ) ,, check the S thread here,, there's a lot of good photo there,, but if you are a serious hobbyist,, i'll go for a dslr na talaga,, nothing against prosumer,, just my opinion:)

hope this helps,, good luck with your purchase

If you want something that you can grow into, I'd say go for the 350D. :)

Yup, like Rosalie said. If you plan to grow.... Get an SLR. But if you perceive that all you need is the lens already integrated to a prosumer Digicam then go for the Lumix. Most prosumer Digicams like the Sony R1 & FZ50 have SUPERB built in lenses! Both can produce the same or better results than some DSLR w/ just the kits lens.

@glenngatan - if your still new in digital photography and has a limited budget to buy an DSLR, why not try canon powershot S3 IS, you can learn the basic and there are also a lot of accessories for this camera :) i think it is still around 18k or baka mas lower pa yung price this year.

Hello sir. My black and white film photography course was under the colloge of masscomm. Doon kasi under ang kurso kong BA Film&Audio-Visual Comm. I heard they also have photography classes in CFA. :) The darkroom experience was fun. I'd love to do it again.

drop the sir,, yeah i miss going to the darkroom,, here's a threa regarding darkroom workshop in batangas,,http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=3336&highlight=darkroom.. though i think you don't need that anymore,,

regarding nikon d40,, i think it's a good camera,, it really depends how serious are you with digital photography,, going to higher level camera right away will save you money when it comes the time you want to upgrade,, IMHO

Get a fixed lens, learn the ins and outs and maximize it, by the time you're ready for a DSLR, the fixed lens camera will still play a big role whenever you don't want the hassle of bringing a DSLR and its accessories :)

@glenn: only you can tell if you're ready for a dslr. either way, parang sabi ni david, hindi naman masasayang whichever camera you're buying as a p&s can come in handy during times when bringing a dslr is a hassle. if you're really set on pursuing photography though and budget is an issue, get a dslr na. d40 or 350d are excellent choices.

It seems your not a total newbie. Do the math bro, if you think you'll be jumping to dslr in the future it will be wise to get a dslr than a prosumer cam. You'll save money in the long end. If your not that sure then go for a p&s:)

Prosumer cams ranges from 18K up, just save a little bit more you'll get an entry level slr like d40 kit which cost 27k. Goodluck on your purchase:)

I think Sir David is right using a fixed or P&S will give a bird eye view of what DSLR, but if you really want a DSLR 350d will do but in P&S try LX3 those two i have already and for me it's a lethal combination aside from my 350d lenses hehehehehehe... but the most important is that Photography is all about fun cameras don't matter if you don't having fun :)

this was my path before acquiring my DSLR.

i chose the sony H50 to begin learning photography. after that, i bought a 1000D and used its kit lens to the max.

now i know the kit lens's capabilities and limitations. so i bought a 2nd lens, the 50mm f1.8 mkII.

then a few weeks later, i bought a 70-200 f4L

the H50 is still with me, i still use it whenever i want to go really light, and whenever i want to shoot videos.

I'd be a hypocrite if I told you to go get the 350d. Yes, I came from a Canon A-1 slr film cam but when I went digital, I got a Nikon 5500 and an S5IS which are both prosumer cams.

I never regretted getting a prosumer cam first than a 400d because the fixed lens cameras were great training wheels when I went digital. Imagine I had to cover weddings using only ISO100 (I still feel like cheating now everytime I shoot in ISO1600 with a DSLR). The stress and the pressure that came with prosumer cams were my greatest teachers.

But what I learned from prosumer cams is something that's hard to teach to anyone who just got hold of D40's or 1000d's. That you CAN really squeeze a camera's potential if you only know how to do it. It gave me the confidence that even if all our 3 DSLRs (God forbid) broke down during a wedding coverage, I can still deliver with our 2 back up S5IS prosumers.

Now, the FZ50 is an amazing, amazing piece of camera. If I knew about it then, I would've gotten that one instead of the S5IS. Take advantage of live view to see your exposures as you mix and match the settings before you click the shutter and you'll see how beautiful prosumers are.
