Michael Yulo 01-05-2007, 09:49 PM Could anyone out there please recommend to me a good brand and model of monopod that can take the load of a Canon 30D camera with battery grip plus a Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS lens?
THANKS.

Suggest that you visit them ... bring the gear that you intend to mount and test it. Better that way ... whatever is most comfortable and stable. Get the shoulder brace too!
rosalie_gomez 01-06-2007, 02:36 PM What's your heaviest set-up that this can take?

cris_servillas 01-06-2007, 03:00 PM my friend is using this type of monopod and is mounting his 1Ds MarkI + 70-200 F/2.8L IS...it seems ok.

That's pretty cool... can your friend actually leave it standing on its own? :) Because based on what I've read, can't really leave it on its own.
Brent_Co 01-06-2007, 04:37 PM I don't think any monopod is safe to stand on its on with a load like that. Unless of course you're making an excuse to replace your equipment.

That's what I figured but curious to hear from someone who has used one. Personally, I opted for a more compact one so it's easier to bring around. :)

Do I still need to get a ballhead with this monopod inorder for it to take the load of a Canon 30D camera with battery grip plus a Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS lens?
Thanks.

A ballhead is not really a must for a monopod especially when using a telephoto lens. Since you can screw the monopod directly to the tripod mount of the lens, you can rotate the camera by rotating the lens collar. :)

rosalie_gomez 01-06-2007, 11:21 PM You're welcome, Michael! :)
dindin_lagdameo 01-07-2007, 09:35 PM Thanks, Rosalie. I really thought I still need a ballhead for it.
rosalie_gomez 01-08-2007, 06:18 AM Thanks, Rosalie. I really thought I still need a ballhead for it.
As long as you're using a telephoto that has a lens collar, can make do without a ballhead. But if you use any other lens, you'll be better off with a ballhead... if not, you'll be limited to shooting horizontally. :)
dindin_lagdameo 01-08-2007, 10:54 AM If I want to shoot vertically, I'll then need a ballhead, right?
zandy_marantal 01-08-2007, 12:34 PM @Dindin
Not necessarily. You can use something like this. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=5498&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
Or, use an Arca-style clamp and an L-plate attached to your camera.

I use a combination of both. Similar to this setup. http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/tutorials/monopods/index.html
HTH.
gg garcia 01-08-2007, 01:16 PM May I suggest...
Velbon Neo Pod 6/ Sherpa Pro Pod. It comes in 3 different lengths plus its made of carbon fiber. It doesn't have those small legs, though it can support a ballhead if one so wished. This is what I use. It is extremely light, sturdy, and best of all, portable. I don't even think twice in carrying it around.
Here's a link: http://www.velbon-tripod.com/table_mono_pods.htm
Just scroll down and you'll find it. :)

If you're shooting with any other lens, except the 80-200, yes! :)

What I meant by needing a ballhead, is any simple tripod head. Btw, I use a similar set-up (combination of both). :)
dindin_lagdameo 01-08-2007, 03:04 PM @Zandy
I like that ballhead, 3232!
@Rosalie
For our sinulog trip, I guess my simple ballhead is fine... or none for that matter.

The 3232 is not a ballhead. Your ballhead actually costs more than the 3232.
dindin_lagdameo 01-08-2007, 03:22 PM What is the 3232?
dindin_lagdameo 01-08-2007, 03:22 PM Oops, it's a Manfrotto 3232 Swivel Tilt Monopod!
rosalie_gomez 01-08-2007, 03:35 PM Manfrotto 3232 Swivel Tilt Monopod Head :)
dindin_lagdameo 01-08-2007, 03:50 PM Thanks, Rosalie!

you can leave the monopod on its own while scratching your back or having to relax for a few minutes...but dont leave it without you within reach. or else.:)
rosalie_gomez 01-08-2007, 10:51 PM Ok... thanks, Cris! :)
Topy Manalo 01-09-2007, 03:07 PM I like the 5 fold NG Tundra, it's cheap, it's sturdy and it has a ball-head already. I don't know for DSLRs with heavy lens, but it's perfect for my Canon S2 IS with Sony Telecon.
