hello everyone,

i spent the new year with my wife's family in pili, bicol. around 10 minutes from their house is the camarines sur watersports complex - home of one of the first cable wakeboarding here in asia.

it was january 30, and we arrived at around 5 in the afternoon. the sun was already low in the horizon and the sky is very much cloudy. but, having my dslr in hand, i decided i cannot pass up this opportunity to shoot some pictures.

here's the output... enjoy!

e-500
40-150mm zuiko lens
shot at 150mm
1/200
f4.5
iso 1000
resized but unedited

photos 1 and 2 would have been better if the wakeboarder was facing the camera or if you were on the other side of the lake. photo 1 has nice DOF though.

the background somehow distracts me. is the background like this all around the lake? maybe in your next shoot, try going lower to give more definition to the height of the wakeboarder (but not omitting the water) and maybe use a narrow DOF.

thanks for sharing!

thank you sirs for all the comments.

sir red, i was shooting beside another photographer with a 20d and a long white lens. as he was shooting, i could hear smooth 3 frame bursts. with my oly, i can only manage a shot-short stop-shot-shot. so, i gave up on the burst mode and shot only single frames. the oly is quite slow to focus, which forced me to use the center af point only.

but still, i think my oly performed ok. there's not much noise with iso 1000, and my pictures are comparable to the one's posted on the venue's walls.

sir leni, i concur with your comments. the background really sucks. the sports complex is located within a compound and besides a subdivision. that's why you see houses on the background. i would've moved to shoot at another angle but then my position is where the steepest romp is located. also, there is an island at the center of the lake, but i have no way of getting there. sigh, how i wish they fix the venue a little.

i'll be going back there this summer, hopefully, the weather will be better and i'll scout the place more for other shooting locations.

thank you again for your comments and keep em comming!

mr. flores, i'll be visiting my mom in camarines sur. do you have the coordinates of this watersports venue? :-), just kidding. i know the place. di lang ako nakauwi nung october for the first ever cable wakeboarding competition. sayang!

ryan, based on your posted photos seems very focus i didnt noticed much noise. I read somewhere that it is better to shoot one single shot than spray and pray, I always use Spot metering always, besides our 40-150mm is not enough to get a closer compo which will help to blur the backround.

but its all good!

Decided to quote this since it's exactly what I wanted to say. :)
