Hi guys! I would appreciate any comments on EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens :Grin:
Is it good? Hows the IQ?

Just got one recently.. works nice for extreme close ups, food, portraits. A bit bulky ... but, it works just fine for me.

Quick Q: What will you be using it for?

IQ? Sorry .. not that familiar with this acronym. Intelligence quotient? Hehehe ...

Image quality, excellent. Sharpness is off the charts.
The only issue is the speed of focusing. It's way slow, but you have to remember, it's a macro lens. When you nail the focusing, you really nail it.

It's highly recommended. Other than a macro lens, it doubles as a portrait lens. But bare with the focusing speed.

Get one. And oh.. it's a specialty lens. If you're not up to some serious macro work, this lens is not for you. Plunk your money elsewhere.

gonna use it for macro work. IQ? Image quality. Nice new avatar alan with a single L. by the way, what's the price in hidalgo? My brother's in HK right now, he said it's Php 26000 if converted to peso.

I'd go with the 100mm macro. It's a tried and tested lens in Canon's macro series. and besides, I'm not really into EF-S lenses because of a future upgrade that lies in front of me in the future.

In terms of quality, the 100mm macro has a better resolving power curve. I've done some test shots with both lenses with a Swiss optical engineer and have concluded that 100mm is still by far a better lens.

In terms of cost, they are almost the same. The only problem is, the focal length that the 100 will turn into with your camera. If you're alright and game with that, then I suggest that you plunk down some serious cash in getting one.

The price at Henry's is P29k. Though I think you can get it a little cheaper pa (I think) at Mayer's ... was on my "look / buy no in Mayer" mode the time I got it. But now, (gulp) - back with them ... just need to be a tad bit careful in buying from that store.

Suggest you get your stuff here --- the lenses I mean. Better for you re: warranty. And since you're not there to buy / test it yourself, better to pay a little extra than suffer the consequences later.

Extender doubles the aperture in case of the 2X extender, so the lens becomes slower right? but it becomes a 200mm macro lens. Tama ba?

I think so ... but it might affect the IQ (hehehe) ...

The 100mm can also be used for full frame cameras .. not that I have plans of upgrading in the not so distant future .... hahahahaha .. but its a comforting thought - that's all there is to it.

Does not double. IT Increases magnification factor. the EF-25 functions differently from the 2x and the1.4x multiiplier. I do not tink it affects IQ. In my opinion, you get a totally different perspective when it up close.. I do not use AF, full manual focusing.

These close up accessories are place between body and glass to enable high magnification, increases magnification by 0.7 for the EF25, and .03-.05 for the EF12.

extension tubes should not degrade quality since they are just "tubes" that doesnt have glass.

extenders are different.

Just got my EF 100 f/2.8 macro last night! my brother bought it for me from HK. Tried it last night, and it was great! Very sharp ang images. mabagal lang ang auto focus though, but i'm not complaining because it's for macro naman. I'll post some images maybe tonight.

AF can be slow ... but for Macro - you start first with the AF and go Manual after to get the desired focus some more. Or just go manual all the way ... because especially in low light, it hunts like crazy if you go AF. Or in low light, use a penlight on your subject as the modelling light then fire away once you get it into AF. STill, i'd go for manual use ...
