Mee too, when i was there in late 2003, i only had 1 lens! I've been thinking of going back just to shoot! NYC is my favorite place in the world! You can never run out of things to do, even if you're alone. If you're lucky, you can even bump into your old friends from grade school, or famous movie stars. hehehe :D

i definintely agree, the shirt speaks for itself (i "heart" NY), still had my 300d when i was there, the subway is also very cool and like what you said with my current gear now, mas ok sana

as for the movie stars, was so lucky to see a shoot for CSI NY in the middle of Times Square was able to see Gary Sinise in the flesh and what made the whole shoot cool was the fact that the episode was all about a murder in the middle of Times Square, Astig!

Levi, if I may ask, what settings did you use on your photo of the altar? I've tried taking photos of the inside of a church before and it didn't come out too well. Thanks.

I think the best way to capture the infamous NY skyline is to go to the otherside of the river - New Jersey. There's a particular park there where you could shot the NYC skyline to your heart's desire:) . Unfortunately it was raining when i was there:(

I was in Jersey when I took that shot. Pretty much the best vantage point if you want to take a snap of manhattan.

It's as if he got the pink slip at work two nights ago, didn't bother going home to shower and change, and instead immediately hit the streets to collect recyclables.

Edward Villoso's picture above reminded me of my "Bookends" series because the first pic is similar.

"Bookends"

The title is from the Simon & Garfunkel “Old Friends” song, “Bookends”.

When I took the picture of the two homeless men in front of Grand Central, they reminded me of Simon & Garfunkel’s song, “Old Friends”, because of the song’s first two lines: “Old friends, sat on the park bench like bookends...” So I thought I’d use the title, “Bookends”, to sort of put a new twist on the old S&G song.

Bookends hold books together so I also thought I’d use the analogy and show pictures of any pair that held something between them.

At night, I’ve seen a dozen or so homeless men gather at Saint Thomas Church’s steps on Fifth Avenue. It’s as if they materialized out of nowhere thinking they can now come out in the open because the darkness will conceal what identities they had.

In the morning on my walk to work, I still see some of them here and there on 42nd Street. The night is over and they begin to disappear, but a few linger a while longer perhaps to observe the world they don’t belong in.

Which I think was what the two homeless men in the first photo were doing -- watching from the sidewalk people in business suits heading off to work inside climate-controlled buildings.

When I planted my camera and tripod in front of them and started shooting, I didn’t look into their faces because I thought I might get hostile looks back. But later when I looked at the pictures on my computer and saw their expressions and movements, they seemed rather afraid and camera-shy. They kept shifting in their seats and turning their heads this way and that as if thinking it wasn’t such a good idea after all to sit in this bench and watch the world go by.

I normally don’t look at people’s faces as I pass them by in New York City. I am perfectly content at them -- irrelevant as they are -- to being blurs in my life. But with camera in hand and stopping by to take pictures every now and then, the world around me through people’s faces and gestures begins to crystallize. So crystal-clear in fact that sometimes I feel I have just peered into the city’s soul.
