i talked with a canon sales rep today, she said they have a 400d double lens kit which is 18-55 and 70-200 for 59T, and if you buy it on or before dec 31 06 you get an additional 1 year warranty, is it worth it?

(they are selling the regular 400d kit with the 18-55 at 48,500, some stores are giving 0% 6 mos to pay)

thanks

what variant of 70-200?

clear this up since almost always, they mean 70-300, not 200.

@giderbert
yup better verify again..the 70-200 f/4 non IS is about 37t at hidalgo so you still have 22t which is a lot expensive for the 18-55 kit lens :)

Canon Australia sells a 400D "Twin-Lens" kit. Its the 18-55 + 75-300. I'm guessing its the same here. There is no way you can get a brand new 400D Kit + 70-200 f4 for 59K. :)

Oops... looks like I misunderstood the original post! Thought the 400D body was not included, just the 2 lenses!

that's the same package that they sold in japan for the 350d. my friend got his (350d with the lenses) for 41k. at that time, 350d was i think priced at 59k ++ by canon. if you can do the math, ul know if ur getting a good deal. :) but then again it is canon that you are dealing with. im pretty sure that the price is steeper compared to the ones in hidalgo. :)

the 2nd lens is EF 55-200 II USM ITS WITH THE 18-55 58,500 WITH THE CANON 400D

This is correct. This is the 55-200 mk2. This is a very decent lens. MTF is very good for such a small package. It's steady from 55 to 200mm, though it doesn't go as high as 8+ or higher even stopped down. What makes it good is that it starts of decently good and stays there across the range and across the frame.

The tradeoff is that the thing is f5.6 at the long end and I bet it goes up to f5.6 pretty quickly from 55mm. But for its size, weight, and price, it is very decent. Usable. Basically an outdoor lens.

In the past, the 2 lens kit was the 18-55 and the 75-300 f4-5.6 non-IS. this was during the 300d days. Actually, the plan since this time was an 18-55 and the 55-200 mk2 w/c was a big improvement over the mk1.

If used properly, these consumer grade lenses do well. You just have to know their limitations and work within them. For example, last Sat., I used my old 28-105 f3.5-4.5 mk1 lens on a wedding. My 24-105L was sent for calibration. This is the grandaddy of the 28-135 IS. I was surprised that it performend well in about 80-90% of the situations. It was only when the light was against me or in certain situations that the L had an edge over it. I also had to work harder when shutter speed was low because I had no IS.

So, if you want to get started and don't want to blow a lot of money, these lenses are decent. Not the greatest and if you learn very quickly or turning pro later, you'll definitely outgrow them. It's that 5-10% that L or pro lenses that make a difference in tough situations and this is why I had to buy one.

But if I were just shooting for fun by myself, I'd probably just get a 70-300 f4-5.6 IS for all around use in the long end, get a tamron 17-50 f2.8 for my wide to mid, and a 50mm f1.8 mk2 for low light and sharpness. I wouldn't even consider any 10-20/22mm lenses as I usually don't shoot in this range. Maybe I might even add an 85mm f1.8 usm or 100 f2 usm just for the portrait, DOF control and low light later. And maybe a simple 1.4x TC just to give me more reach.

Go get this lens kit as it is not really a bad kit. It's not the greatest, but its a decent performer. I am assuming that the 18-55 is not a dud. I've found out that many mk2's of this is really bad. Your only problem later on is that if you outgrow it or reach the limits of these 2 lenses.

Oh, best to see how much these lenses really cost individually. I suspect it's about the same.

i got my Kiss Digital N (350D) way back in Feb with 2 kit lenses. it's great for starters since you've got 18mm-200mm covered. :) both were Mark II USM.

but if you already have some lenses in mind, might as well keep the cash and get that other lens. :)

For those who are wondering about the dual lens kit, I took a photo of the package, the 400D + 18-55mm + 75-300 f4-5.6 III ....

In the photo below, the box in the right is the standard 400D+18-55 kit, the box on the left is the 75-300.. the box in the middle packages both the standard 400D+kit and the 75-300...

the 75-300 lens is a fairly cheap lens, ive seen it on ebay for around AU$150-AU$350, not sure about the standard Market price though.

the quality....well see for yourself...

NO PP, only Crop with DPP software

I wanted to just get the standard Kit lens (18-55mm), but the salesman said that the package they had came only with the Twin lens kit, so I had no choice but to take it...BTW, I got the camera sept. 6, few days before it was launched, thats why they only had a few in stock...Daw. hehehe

I got the standard kit, and found and got a EF 55-200mm II USM lens 2nd hand (3mos only) for only 8.5k (from Kirby@PiPho), and it gives me an affordable yet satisfying range. I've had a chance to use a EF 70-200mm L f/4 USM lens last week and the noticeable difference is only in apperature. Of course if I was using a tripod, I'm sure the L lens would have been better. (Without IS surely makes working above 105mm harder than normal)

Hi Patrick.. Diego here ( a greenhorn to the world of DSLR) where did U buy the Kit? Prsently Canon Phil has a promo on the 400d. It comes w/a 18-55mm and 55-200 mm ( for P46,500). I witheld it. Nikon will release their D40 next year. ( U think its a wise move???)..thanks

Hi diego, i got it here in Australia, and for its price, the lens(75-300) is pretty good, a bit slow though and not a low light lens. I cant comment on the 55-200mm as I havnt tried the lens...

and regarding the D40 or the 400D, well thats a whole new thread. HTH

i went to canon in megamall a while ago..

their normal 400d kit = Php 48,500 (with standard 18-55mm) but if you opt to go dual lens kit, it will cost you Php 58,500 (18-55mm+55-200mm)

the thing here, they have the 55-200mm on sale for only Php 13,000. (that's only 3k savings.) as what JC Fajardo said, if you have already a second lens in mind, might as well keep the cash and get the other lens later.. ;)

though i do have a feeling that this will still sell cheaper in hidalgo..

I saw a store that had the 55-200mm at 15k in Hildalgo. Must be slow to update their prices. But it does focus fast, and USM... it ain't for low light though (f/4.5@55mm, f/5.6@70mm-200mm min), great for outdoors though, just handle with care as it's all plastic...

The long agony of taking the plunge is over (choosing bet d80 and 400d) just got my 400d from Camera Haus MOA, got the dual lens kit, for 55,500 w/ a kingston 1gb CF, but i added 1T and had it upgraded to 2GB. if any1 is still aiming to get a 2lens kit, get it from them, look for ronald and mention my name, they will give you speciall discounts or you can get it on zero interest for 12 mos. Before buying my unit today i dropped by and re-surveyed several shops at hidalgo, they dont offer the deal lens kit and the lowest price for a 400d kit was 44T, so for an extra 12,500 i got a peace of mind that my unit is fully backed up by canon phils, and kingston 2gb cf card and a 55-200 lens. Not bad for waiting for almost a month for the best deal i could get.
