the Torn Between 2 Dslr (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=30684&page=12) thread has left me telling myself... "poor newbie... must be now more confused than ever with the information overload as we, i too, have gone too far with our suggestions and even argued and trolled at her post"

i think this site needs a dedicated part/thread to be maintained by a separate team that will cater to just newbie questions like which camera to buy? is this lens/flash/body better?, etc... when all of us comment on a simple question for a beginner, it's sure to leave her/him with more questions and perplexed. this thread should be moderated by representatives from each brand(probably 2 reps) to be fair and replies from other members ought to be screened and approved first by the mods before they are posted. too many chefs spoil the broth, and in some cases turn it to gravy.

yes, it denies some of us the right to express and help directly but the way we do so often turns into a brand war for "which camera should i buy?" and we provide too much help for the thread starter.

just saying my thoughts.

Paolo: Not really. The Basic section has TONS of info that are asked by newbies and threads that are started FOR newbies. The problem is, 99% of newbies don't even take the time to RESEARCH existing info and rather post their question right away.

Searching may be tedious, but there are a lot of repeating threads about the exact same newbie questions that apply to the questions they wish to ask.

Until people learn to read stickies and perform searches, all newbie posts will just repeat themselves again and again and again.

We can have a non-posting section with relevant thread links, however, but it's almost certain that people won't read that and start posting questions before researching nonetheless.

Until people learn to read stickies and perform searches, all newbie posts wll just repeat themselves again and again and again. - you're right. its just getting frustrating that a lot of the new threads are repeats and so are the answers. to make it worse, such new threads are turned in free for all brand wars. some replies just don't make any sense, some are trolling replies, and others just provide too much info.

We can have a non-posting section with relevant thread links, however, but it's almost certain that people won't read that and start posting questions before researching nonetheless.

we could probably have a newbie section dedicated to answering to "I've never had a dslr, which camera should I buy? Which camera is better? After I get my camera, what do I buy next? Should I buy Nikon or Canon?" and all new threads with such questions should be diverted to this section and the ts told why it was diverted and to follow up on it in the newbie section instead. this section would be maintained by a team from each brand to be fair. other members can reply to the questions, but before they are posted, they'd have to be screened and approved by the team if the reply is inappropriate, insufficient (like if someone just says "that's nice" or "wow... i like" and dont really help), or derogatory. and like i said too... "too many chefs spoil the broth" poor newbie might get turned off with photography when he/she sees how we help or argue on how to help her.

or we could do what you do, give them the link to the existing thread, tell them to ask their question there, and lock their previous thread.

@ Lee - yeah English only as per forum rules.

I agree with David Tong, we don't need dedicated section for newbies.

Cheers!

exhibit Ahere..

but by doing some back reading, using the search feature and looking at
"post your XXX's shots here" threads, helped in deciding which one to get.. :)

also some helpful advices from the pros here and veterans on their own field and equipments. so i think there's no need for a dedicated section. Unless the mods starts to delete old message on a yearly basis.. which is very unlikely.. :D

I hear you on that david. I make email announcements on my company's photography club (registration link written) and folks still email me asking to add them. kinda defeats the effort of writing the mail.
