View Full Version : Canon Powershot S Series Thread
maxi_sanagustin 05-24-2006, 12:10 AM Hi Guys!
Just wanted to started this thread for all users of Canon Powershot S Series (S1, S2, S3) Thread.
I myself own a S2 IS. Members are free to discuss anything and everything about this famous series from Canon. e.g (focusing techniques, proper setting for a certain photo shoot, and many many more).
Enjoy!

Edwin Karganilla 06-05-2006, 04:04 PM I just got my S3 IS last week. Good to see another Powershot user here. :-)
I love the zoom and IS of this camera. Quick and easy to use.
din cordero 06-07-2006, 02:39 AM hi to all. i am a proud S series (S2) user myself. i learned the basics of photography using this camera. as i told my friends, this camera has all the features of a dslr except the speed but it has a freakin excellent zoom. :)
nicko_real 06-07-2006, 09:41 AM im a proud s3 owner hehe
mykl mabalay 06-07-2006, 01:41 PM i'm an s3is owner also...
Anna Miranda 06-07-2006, 05:28 PM I've been waiting for S3 IS for the longest time. I guess it's already out.
jason_liao 06-07-2006, 11:51 PM proud S3 owner here guys...:)
maxi_sanagustin 06-08-2006, 12:40 AM wow, so many s3 is users here :) just bought my s2 two months before s3 release. i should waited it. but im happy with my cam right now. care to share some photos guys?
what i like most in this cam is it's 12x zooming capability and IS. i can also add the super macro feature.
have any comments on failures or problems in s3? on s2 sometimes it's hard to focus. or it's just me who is getting a hard time.
Anna Miranda 06-11-2006, 08:07 AM 29k, is it?
Edwin Karganilla 06-14-2006, 12:09 PM 29k, is it?
you can get one for just 24K in hidalgo.
Randy_Rivera 06-14-2006, 01:10 PM just to clarify, the S3 in hidalgo is only 24k??? does it come with one year warranty? Is it store warranty or international warranty?
Anna Miranda 06-15-2006, 05:17 PM you can get one for just 24K in hidalgo.
since i'm only 14 and i don't really know my way around the world that much, mind me asking, where's hidalgo? >__<
dindin_lagdameo 06-15-2006, 05:39 PM it's this wonderful street near Quiapo church where you can buy lots of camera stuff...
Edwin Karganilla 06-16-2006, 12:55 PM Randy, got mine for that amount. one year, store warranty.
maxi_sanagustin 06-18-2006, 11:19 PM wow the price of s3 totally went low this time. i bought my s2 last march and it was for 22k. imagine just adding 2k i can get an s3. but that was last march and s3 was not yet sellable for the public
Edwin Karganilla 06-20-2006, 03:33 PM i hope am not OT, what camera bag are you using for your S1/S2/S3? I'm looking for something smaller, like the regular p&s bags, pouch type with shoulder strap, that fits the camera (without the tube adapter and hood), a set of batteries, and SD card pockets? something small that you can bring along everywhere. suggies?
jason_liao 06-20-2006, 09:59 PM guys... just want to ask what camera bag are you using for you s3? anybody who can suggest wat bag to get that also fits in the lens adapter, wide lens, telephoto lens, and close up lens? tips anyone?
maxi_sanagustin 06-21-2006, 12:46 AM i've forgot the brand name of the bag that i've purchased for my s2. as soon as i got home i'll check it. i bring this anywhere and it's not that heavy. i can put 3 sets of battery and my sd's along with the camera. c",)
jason_liao 06-21-2006, 11:54 PM sige bro maxi paki post nalang wat brand and where did you buy it. thanks.
mykl mabalay 06-22-2006, 07:06 AM i use case logic. around 800 in hidalgo. very handy bag with adequate paddings...
daniel go 06-23-2006, 10:41 AM S3is owner here! :)
Christopher Perez 06-23-2006, 02:03 PM s2 proud owner here. not only it has an awesome zoom and IS, but it can also record a video... :) isn't that cool? i also use case logic bag for it. can store the cable, 4 pcs AA batteries, 3 SD cards, and a chewing gum... :D
both bought in hidalgo. very cheap deal.
TIP: when anyone is planning to buy one in hidalgo (any gear in general), call the stores and reserved before you go, (lesson i learned coz i assumed that they have stocks and ended up frustrated on my first visit) and waited another week and confirmed twice before i visit again. i went home happy with my baby s2 and got another extra discount pa on their regular price since i waited for a week. got a really good deal... worth the wait... :)
mykl mabalay 06-23-2006, 02:13 PM hey, welcome daniel and christopher! where's arnel?
Allan Salvador 06-23-2006, 10:28 PM Hi guys! S2 IS user here...
Anna Miranda 07-01-2006, 09:08 PM where else can i grab an S3? sorry if i'm getting annoying. >_<
winky_valerio 07-04-2006, 02:54 PM Hi to everyone, I also own a 2 month old S2.
hubert_tan 07-04-2006, 10:22 PM okay ba ang S3 under dark light conditions?
winky_valerio 07-07-2006, 01:36 PM I think the S3 has been improved under low light conditions than the previous S2 because of the higher ISO settings of the cam, however I think noise will still be the issue.
winky_valerio 07-07-2006, 01:40 PM By the way guys, has anybody here uses adaptors, filters and extension lens for the S2?
If so, hows the performance? what brand and where to buy? thanks.
Anna Miranda 07-16-2006, 06:21 PM finally, now, im also a proud s3 owner.
daniel go 07-17-2006, 10:38 PM Congrats ANNA!!
@ Winky, I have the canon lens adapter and a UV filter attached on my S3is since the day I bought the camera. I want the lens to be protected. It doesn't seem to affect the performance a bit. I guess its important to get good UV filter. A Hoya multicoated or a Tiffen UV is very good!
@ MYKL, Oo nga kulang nalang si Arnel, buo naraman sana yun tropang S2/3 :)
winky_valerio 07-19-2006, 01:49 AM @ Daniel,
Thanks! How much does the adaptor and a good UV filter costs? Where can I buy one?
winky_valerio 07-19-2006, 01:50 AM @ Daniel,
Thanks! How much does the adaptor and a good UV filter costs? Where can I buy one?
grazer 07-21-2006, 11:12 AM how much is the latest price of s3 in hidalgo?
Anna Miranda 07-24-2006, 09:54 AM By the way guys, has anybody here uses adaptors, filters and extension lens for the S2?
If so, hows the performance? what brand and where to buy? thanks.
same question. filters will surely come in handy.
mykl mabalay 07-24-2006, 11:40 AM lensmate with a uv filter is the definite choice... check out www.lensmateonline.com (http://www.lensmateonline.com). wala pa yatang nagbebenta dito sa pinas so you need to buy it direct from the USA.
hubert_tan 07-25-2006, 10:51 PM am thinking of getting an S3. how is this different from entry level DSLRs in terms of speed in taking continuous pictures. tnx
winky_valerio 07-26-2006, 03:50 PM am thinking of getting an S3. how is this different from entry level DSLRs in terms of speed in taking continuous pictures. tnx
I think the entry level DSLRs has a burst mode of atleast 3fps, while the S2/S3 has an average of 2.4fps
Eric Merced 07-31-2006, 02:19 PM I'm a S2 IS owner...
I love its zoom capability! I love to use this capabality in portraiture. I set the camera to 3.5 aperture and 12x zoom to achieve a very shallow depth of field. :)
Edwin Karganilla 08-03-2006, 12:50 PM ^ i agree! i attended a charity shoot in baseco last week. had tons of portrait shots! zoomed 12x! DOF was great! no noise at all, since it was sunny and i set my ISO to just 80. plus i was able to take those long-sniper shots without the subject knowing... i love the IS and zoom of this camera! works perfectly for me!
a minor issue for me, was when i had a simple fashion photo-op in Greenhills (in-door). tagal mag recycle ng flash, and wasn't really able to produce good "whole body" photo. details were not that clear in low light. so what i ended up, was portrait shots (zoomed-in). pwede na din.
oh, and to those who have the 58mm Canon lens tube adapter... you may want to consider buying a cool petal hood for just P600 from Henry's.
here's my camera with the petal hood attached:

i have a sunapk UV (P350-Henry's) attached as well. no vignetting at all.
i am love Canon S3 IS!!!
Edwin Karganilla 08-03-2006, 12:57 PM @ Daniel,
Thanks! How much does the adaptor and a good UV filter costs? Where can I buy one?
i got my Canon LAH-DC20 Lens Adapter and Hood Set from Infomax ParkSquare for P2.6K. (wala sa Hidalgo, kahit generic)
el-cheapo UV costs 350, i think better brands cost 800 and above (Hidalgo).
winky_valerio 08-14-2006, 03:09 PM sir may contact no. ka ng INFOMAX parksquare? thanks
Allan Salvador 08-14-2006, 06:46 PM If I'm gonna buy a lens adapter, which one is better, the 52mm or the 58mm? I plan to buy a lensmate adapter...
The bag I use for my S2 is the Tamrac model 5696

i'm planning to buy a lensmate 52mm for filters only. :) can i know why you sell yours? have you encountered any problem? or just not satisfied? :) TIA
mykl mabalay 08-16-2006, 09:40 AM @bijz, i have two lensmate adapters, one is always on my s3is with a uv filter. it's really great and it saved my unit already from a lot of bumps and scratches. i will not sell this one.
i have an identical unit which is attached to a 1.54x teleconverter. i'm only selling this together with the raynox TC. reason for selling- saving up for a new prime lens for my 350d :)
winky_valerio 08-16-2006, 03:51 PM meron din bang aftermarket na neck strap which is mas mataba ng konti sa orig na S2iS neck strap?

I can't seem to find the lensmate adatper here in HK. So I might just as well buy it there. Please PM me how much you are selling it(if its still available). I will be in Manila this coming October.
P.S. The new Canon 400D is fantastic. I'll post the Prices here in HK.
oliever talusan 09-14-2006, 01:42 PM where can I find s2is adaptor? in HK? can you point me to the right direction? thanks!
Carlo Cecilio 09-17-2006, 11:41 PM hi guys!
i'm also an s3 owner. i'm also a newbie in photography and i'd like to ask your help.
i can't seem to get my desired shot of a blurred background when focusing on my subject at f2.8. When i use the zoom at the widest aperture setting of 2.8, it also becomes f3.2. does this also have an effect?
I'm just wondering why i could'nt get my desired outcome as compared to dslr shots that i see with the same setting.
thanks.
oliever talusan 09-18-2006, 10:06 AM already found an adaptor. Really cheap only 500php. pwede na rin

try LowePro Rezo TLZ 10 (http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Toploading/designed_digital/Rezo_TLZ_10.aspx). Not sure kung fit ung lens hood and if its available in Manila. Perhaps if its collapsible.
Carlo Cecilio 09-18-2006, 09:37 PM already found an adaptor. Really cheap only 500php. pwede na rin
is that the power adapter for the video function? where did you get it?
oliever talusan 09-19-2006, 09:03 AM is that the power adapter for the video function? where did you get it?
Its a Lens Adapter. Sort of a tube. It's aluminum and mine is just a cheapo. Got it in China:) .
bijz.reyes 09-21-2006, 08:34 PM http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/3766/img2790tx1.jpgi got my lens adapter from taiwan. not lensmate, not canon. aluminum and black.

For the maximum (12x) zoom setting of S series camera, the biggest possible aperture setting is 3.5. Based on my experience doing portraiture using my S2 IS, I achieved a shallow depth of field by setting the zoom to maximum and aperture to 3.5. Then I just adjusted my distance from the subject by moving away to achieve the right framing of the subject...
David Tong 09-25-2006, 06:04 PM I'm hoping to get an S3 soon as well... I was wondering if there are 55mm adapters for the S3 since I have quite a few 55mm filters from my film SLR days.
Does the S3 also have "smart zoom" or whatever it is called where you can zoom using digital without going to optical first to preserve the aperture/speed of the lens?
The S3 is on top of my list but the Fuji 9000/9500 is hovering near my options as well.
I have posted my dilemma in my blog (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-.6LTe3A6erT2s1BxxYDtjQnw?p=10)
Carlo Cecilio 09-25-2006, 06:19 PM ok thanks eric!

David Tong 09-25-2006, 06:38 PM Carlo: With smaller lenses, it tends to require you to move closer to the subject rather than solely relying on the aperture to get a blurred background... With my old P&S S40, I need to switch to macro and move up within a foot or so of my subject to get a good blurred background...

F3.5 1/50
Exactly the same manual settings sa focal length, exposure and shutter speed but standing 3 ft away.

I'm sure the S3 can do better, though.
beembo.vierneza 09-26-2006, 01:34 AM Hello guys, another newbie here (that's me). I plan to buy the S3IS this coming weekend sa Hidalgo Event.
Need some inputs on the additional things to accompany my soon to be baby.
(adaptor, hood, uv, bag, and the likes)
Thanks in advance.
David Tong 09-26-2006, 12:47 PM 19,500 lang S3 sa Henry's daw... I asked yesterday... Grabe sa mall 29,500
oliever talusan 09-29-2006, 09:58 PM i got my Canon LAH-DC20 Lens Adapter and Hood Set from Infomax ParkSquare for P2.6K. (wala sa Hidalgo, kahit generic)

I will be in Manila next week. If you guys need the generic lens adaptor, I can buy you silver or black. Or you can just buy mine. Bili nalang ako ulit. Alam ko mahirap hanapin sa Manila yun
beembo.vierneza 09-30-2006, 12:43 PM Finally, I have my S3IS now. I got it from Henry's @ 19k last friday.
Learning naman ang kasunod. :)
mayk_cruz 10-01-2006, 03:02 AM Hi there,
Glad to know there's a legion of SX-IS users here. I just bought my S3 last week (PhP19,500 "store" warranty nga lang po, Mall price is PhP29,950 so you do the math...)
It's about 26K with the local canon 1yr-warranty.. so it's ur choice
My new S3IS kept me awake at night specially during the recent storm with 2-sets of batteries fully charge).
To me it is a big leap from my former PowerShot A80(I still love her pa naman).
The 12X-zoom is great and I love the USM(super-silent) plus the video-quality!
Enjoy your(our)S3 and S2....
Alvin Sunga 10-04-2006, 11:56 AM Hi to all ...

concon_trinidad 10-14-2006, 12:43 PM Hi. How much and where did you get yours with all the accessories? Thanks.
I got my S3 from Hidalgo for P19k. The lens adapter and hood from Canon - Digital Exchange (Glorietta) for P1.9k. The filter cost me P450.00 from Hidalgo, too.
Mike Punzalan 10-16-2006, 07:08 PM Whats the advantage of having a 58mm adapter as compared with a 52mm?
the 52mm seems small and compact. lots of available filters as well.
And anybody knows where I can buy Lowe Pro Aw30 camera bag? thanks
David Tong 10-16-2006, 08:24 PM Are there 55mm adapters for the S3? I still have quite a few filters from my film SLR that I don't want to junk...
manny.talavera 10-16-2006, 08:47 PM @mike
The advantage of 52mm adapter is 52mm size filters are cheap, disadvatage are you cannot use the accessory lenses (Wide Converter 0.75x WC-DC58A & Tele-converter 1.5x TC-DC58B) cause their thread diameter is 58mm.
@david
To use your 55mm filters you need a step-down adapter ring 58mm to 55mm if you lens adapter is the 58mm type or step-up adapter ring 52mm to 55mm for the 52mm type lens adapter.

i somehow try to figure out if the 52mm adapter is smaller and less flash intrusive as the 58mm.. i am trying to make the s3 is as small as possible, as it is already huge..
somehow the advantage i find about the 58mm adapter is it looks better, as a slight curvature outwards (makes the lens like a small L lens), unlike the 52mm which is thin all throughout.. and using the 58 mm adapter makes you use 58mm filters which may be useful when upgrading to a DSLR, just use a step up ring if possible, and re-use your 58mm filters
by the way, step down rings are not a good idea since there will be vignetting. It is always a good idea to step up, than to step down.
my suggestion for David is to just use a 52mm adapter and use a 52-55 step up ring.
Mike Punzalan 10-16-2006, 10:08 PM anybody has a 52mm adaptor in here? or almost everyone has a 3rd party or canon 58 mm adaptor?
David Tong 10-16-2006, 10:14 PM Manny: Thanks... clarify my question lang... assuming i'm still planning to get an adaptor (no adaptor pa, actually, planning to get an S3 palang hehe), are there direct mount 55mm adaptors for the S3?
Thanks, sorry for the confusion.
*edit* Mike: Thanks for the suggestion (nagkasabay tayo magpost hehe)...
manny.talavera 10-17-2006, 11:26 AM I dont know if any 55mm lens adapter for S2/S3 IS exist, the only type I know are the 58mm and 52mm type.
Anyone here from Bangkok or Singapore that have seen one please answer. :)
Mike Punzalan 10-17-2006, 01:31 PM survey for everyone, which one do you prefer, 52mm or 58mm adapter?
manny.talavera 10-17-2006, 03:16 PM for me the 58mm adapter it looks better than the 52mm type :).
Mike Punzalan 10-17-2006, 03:34 PM for me the 58mm adapter it looks better than the 52mm type :).
but the 52mm is smaller, and less bulky..
i'm confused.
i want a small s3 is ..
manny.talavera 10-17-2006, 04:00 PM It is just my preference, and the 58mm type complements S3IS body well.
Try to search google for photos of S2/S3 with attached adapter then decide if the 52mm type made the camera look smaller.
Mike Punzalan 10-17-2006, 04:44 PM i will be going the Angeles, Pampanga this weekend for some birthday shoot.
And my lensmate 58mm has not yet arrived.
Should i just buy the Canon 58mm adapter for temporary protection, and re-sell it when my lensmate arrives?
or should i just go unprotected?
Whats a good brand 58 mm UV filter available in photo shops in Hidalgo or other shops?
nel_manlises 10-17-2006, 05:02 PM Sir Mike,
I think you can go unprotected as long as you don't accidentally hit the extending zoom lens (or else you might see E18 on the EVF/LCD).
If you've got an immediate buyer for the Canon adapter, then you can consider getting it for your Pampanga trip. Otherwise, it (selling the adapter) is not worth the fuss and the hassle.
For lens protection, you can try to check out Sunpak UVs (available for Php300-350) in Hidalgo.

Hi! Yup, I suggest you get the adapter kit first for zoom lens protection. You can get the lenses later, after you've discovered if the S3's focal range is either too short or too long for the subjects you're more likely to shoot at. :)

the adapter tube/UV filter combo is good as it protects your valuable lens from the elements, such as falls when doing macro on a tripod, bumps, fingernail scratches when a friend takes your photo, smudges, and of course when going to the beach to take photos, as salty air and sand will have a strong chance of scratching your lens without you knowing it..
although if you want a very small S3is you could put on a small pouch or belt bag then you dont need this..
as for the UV filter, pick the best brand you can find.
the lens are optional, i dont see it a necessity as i find the canon lens quite expensive (for the telephoto, a gain of only 1.5x zoom cost 7k! )
the cheapest canon adapter is so far in Mall of Asia canon shop, around 1900. But this is made in cheap plastic. A better one which is made in aluminum is www.lensmateonline.com (http://www.lensmateonline.com).

IMHO, a 1.5x gain is not to be taken lightly. it will increase your focal range from 72mm to 108mm (35mm equivalent). that's a big difference. try shooting at the moon at the full zoom (12x) of the S3 against an S3 with a tele (18x total zoom), you'll notice the big difference in the details. kung kulang pa 'yun, you can go for the raynox 2020 pro which will increase your zoom from 12x to 26.4x (158.4mm equivalent).
if you're inclined in birding, limited astrophotography, or peeping, teleconverters are the way to go. otherwise, wide angle tcs would offer better use.
opinyon lang po. :)

lyzanderdilag 10-20-2006, 12:39 PM Hi guys!
Thanks for the responses. Frankly, following the exchanges about all the lenses and adapters got me confused! I think I should buy an adapter tube and a UV filter first. The lenses just have to wait until after i fully explore the S3's features.
Am going up to sagada over the holidays. Any suggestion as to the gear i should bring? Right now i only have a camera bag and my S3.

fully-charged extra batts and extra SDs po :D oh yeah, a tripod too! :)
Mike Punzalan 10-20-2006, 02:35 PM the adapter tube is not really necessary. You might even need to remove it when taking photos of your friends with flash as it slightly covers the flash (the 58mm tube)..
It is a need when you have to keep the s3is on ready shoot (always on) for quick photos when needed, and when your s3is is most of the time hanging on your neck, or carrying it from the strap (it will sway like a pendulum).. I hit my s3is on the table with this. Good thing i have the cap on..
im going to pampanga too this weekend and will go there without the tube and UV filter..
-----
On sagada, you only need no more than 512 MB SD card if you shoot on 1600 x1200 (normal 3R prints and web). But if you plan to shoot videos you need at least 2GB SD.
Bring at least 2 sets of fully charged batteries (8 pcs) and an extra 4 pcs sealed alkaline AA..
or course, water-resistant, padded camera bag..
and tripod for:
1) including yourself in group pictures, of course hehehe
2) landscape shots, which requires long 1-2 seconds exposure/shutter speed for depth of field

depends. how much can you get an s2is? as far as i know an s2is sells for 17k..
if you can get a brand new s2is for 16k or less then get the s2is

yes will do. although it might slightly degrade the image quality, and some vignetting at the widest setting especially if you have thick threads in your filter. you are much better using only 1 filter:)
Timothy Tan 11-12-2006, 08:26 PM @andrew: still checking some shops if may stock.. so far no success hehehe baka s3is nga hulog. i'm willing to wait till next feb
they say there is an event na baka may discount daw
Randall Cipriano 11-12-2006, 08:39 PM Canon usually releases a new model during the February-March months. But usually it's a dslr model which in turn drags the previous model's price down. :)
One question... are you willing to forego the holidays photo ops without the S3 IS till February? I had this plan too before, to wait till February because of the same reason. But then again, I thought the Holidays are way important to pass up on for a few hundred bucks. :D
eric espenida 11-13-2006, 08:08 AM I'm just wondering bakit kaya mas mura ung mga camera that were selling in Hidalgo compared to the mall?
andrew_zubiri 11-13-2006, 09:25 AM I'm banking on the Christmas bargains (will there be any?) at the latest to capture those Christmas moments. Btw, how much do the Hidalgo shops usually slash off during the February event? Is it worth the wait?
I'm still undecided between the s2 and the s3, but now leaning towards the s3 because of its color.
Mike Punzalan 11-13-2006, 10:36 AM if you can get the s3 now, get it now, who knows Canon might not release a new model and the s3 might be the last of the series, you might end up scampering for a used s3 in the years ahead.
look at what happened to the olympus c8080, it was an old model released 3 years ago but it beats the hell out of of the present point and shoots in terms of image quality (it has larger sensor than current point and shoots), that everybody are scampering on used c8080 on ebay and can't find one.
point and shoots have reached a saturation point that manufacturers can't make it any much better, so they have to market DSLRs to earn some bucks.

How fast is the S3 IS shot-to-shot (w/ flash) or flash recycle time? This is the reason I will replace my Canon A510 w/c is too slow in Flash recycle time and a Minimum two-second shot-to-shot time. Will the S3 IS satisfied my needs?
Thanks and more power to DPP! :)

Hi, Siegfred. From which shop can you get it at 18K?
Siegfred_pamaran 11-13-2006, 12:57 PM ^ i agree! i attended a charity shoot in baseco last week. had tons of portrait shots! zoomed 12x! DOF was great! no noise at all, since it was sunny and i set my ISO to just 80. plus i was able to take those long-sniper shots without the subject knowing... i love the IS and zoom of this camera! works perfectly for me!
a minor issue for me, was when i had a simple fashion photo-op in Greenhills (in-door). tagal mag recycle ng flash, and wasn't really able to produce good "whole body" photo. details were not that clear in low light. so what i ended up, was portrait shots (zoomed-in). pwede na din.
oh, and to those who have the 58mm Canon lens tube adapter... you may want to consider buying a cool petal hood for just P600 from Henry's.
here's my camera with the petal hood attached:

i have a sunapk UV (P350-Henry's) attached as well. no vignetting at all.
i am love Canon S3 IS!!!

yes it is. 3fps on high speed 150x transcend sd card (im using 2gb, although it also works on 4gb)
The video is also excellent. Camcorder quality. I have been watching the video on a 21 inch Tv without any problem. Very lifelike video shots and stereo sound.
The strength of this camera is on video and burst mode. Its like buying a very good still digital camera and handycam in one.
The video has its own button too, so taking high quality photos while recording video can be done at the same time.
And zoom works while on video. Excellent for video zooming in on those sexy chicks on the beach..hehehe..

lots of petal hood in any camera shops. dont worry about petal hoods. you only use petal hoods on sunny environment. focus on getting good multicoated polarizing filter, that way you can do away without using petal hoods.
Joseph Ian Oscares 11-13-2006, 02:32 PM Sir Mike,
Thanks for the information. Actually, may porpose to have two lens attach on an adapter is protection on may lens and CPL. Bali ang mangyayari, yung lens ko protected with polarizer and my polarizer will be protected from UV filter (Lens+Polarizer+UV filter). So kahit magasgasan, UV ang mauna. Sobrang protective ako sa unit ko,hehehe...:)
Maybe i'll do also some experiment on this. Exploiting other capabilities of S3 IS w/ 2 filters.

lyzanderdilag 11-14-2006, 12:04 AM Hi guys.
I'm interested in black and white photography and a friend suggested that i use a variety of filters to improve the contrast in my shots. As much as possible, I want to work on the images in-camera as i don't have the time and the knowledge to work on post-processing. I currently use a polarizing filter and a UV filter which i take out when using the PL (is that good practice?). Any suggestion as to the type of filters i should get? How about advice on using my S3 for b/w photography?
Thanks in advance.

still get the s3is, the black color fits most filters and converters..
and black does not reflect the flash which ruins the picture..
2k is not the much.. you get larger LCd, histogram, up to 800 iso (useful with noise reduction software)..

congrats! oo maliit.. small but terrible.. you can easily conceal it.. but the zoom range is larger than any large DSLR lens.. you actually need around 3 lens on a DSLR to imitate the built-in zoom of the s3is
most bird photographers actually use the s3is
eric espenida 11-16-2006, 01:10 PM I'm also planning to buy a Lens Adapter/Hood set and a Petal Hood for my S3 Is, magkano kaya price range nila?
Mike Punzalan 11-16-2006, 04:23 PM forget about the petal hood.. you will seldom use it, and can be replaced by multicoated polarizing filter

I ended up with my the camera I originally purchased. I went to the shop today and the other units that were given to me had worse defects: more depressed buttons, not flashing, etc.
concon_trinidad 11-24-2006, 09:17 AM hindi ba pwedeng Lens Adapter lang ang bilhin? thanks.
I suggest you get both the lens adapter and hood. You can remove the hood if you don't need it, like when shooting indoors. Also, Canon sells the two as the LAH-DC20, not just the lens adapter exclusively.
Cheers!

mikealim 11-29-2006, 11:16 AM Hi sirs, I'm new in digital photography and actually I just registered to your site.
I'm still in a process of choosing which camera to buy, either a Digital Camera or a DSLR but I'm into favor of digital camera since im just starting and also the price difference.
I also read almost all the reviews of cameras in dpreview and other sites but still confused on which camera to buy and I want to hear from you guys who already have experiences with different cameras and photography.
Right now Im down with choosing a Canon Powershot S3 IS, Powershot 640, Powershot A710 IS. Since all of you guys in these thread are using S3 IS and searching the forum didn't find anything regarding the other powershot series, does this means that this is the best among powershots? Or should I buy a entry level DSLR instead?
My apology if this is posted in a wrong thread, just hoping that you can help me decide which one to choose:D
Thanks!

second question... most common subjects?

I've never actually held an S3IS, but basing it from online reviews I seem to like its features, especially for its price range. Here is my breakdown. S3IS owners, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Pros:
Very nice zoom range (36 - 432mm, 35mm equiv)
Good price value (around Php 20k?)
Built in image stabilization
Swivel LCD
Electronic view finder (simulates TTL)
Cons:
Advance stuff like:
No flash hotshoe
Raw file support
If I were hunting for a digicam, this would probably be it. It will let you take almost all the photos you want. But if you are somebody who is accustomed to film slr's, is willing to spend more and you don't care that you will own a digital that does not have a movie mode, go with DSLR.
mikealim 11-29-2006, 01:55 PM first question... budget. how much?
second question... most common subjects?
budget? maybe around 20k but of course it still depends on the camera's abilities. I want something that will give me enough experience as a beginner in Digital Photography
subject? maybe a person, people and scenery.
Milton, thanks for the review..
maybe we can transfer the discussion to the thread I created -->

The one i bought from Hidalgo was made in Japan.
raymondgayondato 12-04-2006, 01:11 PM cguro it has been a week since i uploaded pictures..
this morning, i used it for a few shots (less than 10)
for some reason, ayaw na magopen nung camera window.. and even if i click on it, ndi sha nagrerespond.. hmmm.. what i did then is to download using the camera wizard of windows..
i tried tried other usb ports, both on pc and laptop, still no go. once i plug the usb cable, camera turns on in preview mode. but it doesnt respond if you press any key..
is my camera about to break? i hope not..:(

sharpness can be achived during pp.
Here's another shot with a good sense of sharpness.
I faced the same dillemma 3 months back, when I was going to purchase the S3.
But it was not that hard for me. Since I cannot afford a Nikon that time, I went for Canon =)
David Tong 12-05-2006, 05:12 PM Red, can't help but notice the fringing around the subject's jacket and hair. Is that due to PP adjustments?

P.S.
I needed to use Google's define operator (http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=define%3Afringing&btnG=Google+Search&meta=) to find out what fringing means, hehehe.

1st post ko po ito and (Will be tomorrow) A proud owner of S2 IS, though I haven't tried using one pero based on the reviews, it will definitely be a leap-upgrade form my A520. Hope to have better shots with it, sana magkaroon ng separate thread for the tips and tricks for S series users. More power to DPP.

Henry's it at Hidalgo, Quiapo. You won't miss the shop. :)

anyone who know how wireless flash can be applicable to our s3? I have heard this thing before pero i dont know where to start
Mon Salvador 12-08-2006, 10:00 PM Hi there - second post here :)
I'm a proud user of S3 IS - loved everything about it - it's like you have a DSLR na din - it's just you just have to know how to use the functionalities. Love also the Image Stabilization of this camera. Check out some (konti pa lang actually) pics at my flickr.. all taken by my S3 IS.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/monsalvador/
And I'm thinking also of getting a DSLR myself.. :) hehe
Topy Manalo 12-08-2006, 10:35 PM Good day S Series users,
Got a set of LAH-DC20 at Digital Exchange sa Glorietta.
For the users of these set, meron lang akong tanong:
1. The adapter itself is firmly attached, pero merong konting-konting play (firmly attached pero may konting play, an labo ah... :D), yung tipong if you rotate it counter clockwise, tipong 1mm-2mm movement... Normal po ba ito?
2. I got a generic UV filter to protect the inner part (lens). PAg kinabit ko yung hood, merong vignetting on the upper left and the lower left lang ng frame. Normal po ba ulit to? Bakit left side lang ang meron?
3. Yung nabibili po ba sa hidalgo na petal hood na 500-600 pesos eh may vignetting din po ba or wala na kahit mag lagay ako ng CPL + UV.
Replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)
ReD Ognita 12-08-2006, 11:53 PM I have the LAH-DC20 as well.
Yes, meron syang konting "uga" when attached.
The hood (LH-DC40) produces vignetting when used after a filter.
I also have a 58mm petal hood. Meron din syang vignetting, with a filter.
Without a filter, both of them produces no vignetting.
I think the cause of the vignetting is the length of the attached hood on the filter. See, when a filter is attached, the thread of the hood is not being used up. Meron pang threads na naiiwan since mababaw ang thread nung filter connecting to the hood. Hence making the attached hood longer.
I did try to look for a thicker-thread filter para "bumaon" ang hood. But I have yet to see one.
Jeff Lim 12-09-2006, 10:44 AM Hello to all, i'm a proud owner of the first S series, I owned S1 and been using it for more than 2 years.
My camera just went to a major repair from Canon last week due to the problem on the CCD of my camera.
mikealim 12-11-2006, 11:42 PM Im a proud owner of S3 now :D
just want to ask if nalalagyan ba ng filter yung lens adapter na nabibili sa canon para sa S3. sabi kasi sakin dun sa canon na hindi daw nalalagyan ng filter ang S3. totoo po ba ito?
Randall Cipriano 12-12-2006, 12:05 AM Here are some S3 shots, if you don't mind.
http://img488.imageshack.us/img488/638/img0927rm6.jpg
This is a very nice shot. But you said you took this at 5-6 seconds handheld?
Here is what the embedded exif data says (c/o FxIF extension for Firefox):
Camera Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon PowerShot S3 IS
Image Date: 2006:10:29 07:36:52
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 7.9mm
CCD Width: 2.14mm
Exposure Time: 0.500 s (1/2)
Aperture: f/3.5
White Balance: Manual
Metering Mode: Matrix
It's nearly impossible to get a sharp 2sec or longer shot with current IS/VR/SR handheld.
Anyway, it's still a great shot. Absolutely impossible with my A610. :)
David Tong 12-12-2006, 12:37 AM Based on the pic (even without Exif), it can't be 5secs... The light bursts are too short, you can still see the headlights and the white van on the other side of the road quite clearly.
Half a sec sounds about right.

Thanks Randall and David, you are correct.
That shot was taken when my cam was only a month old. And like I said on my post, puros kalikot lang ako. I only understood the exposure thing later. Later when I deleted the image in my cam. Kaya di ko rin mabasa yung exif file. I just made a guess based on my very inexperienced skills.
Anyway, my apologies. I did not mean to mislead or to make myself appear good.
And also, thanks Randall for mentioning FxIF, I have downloaded it.
Now, I can view exifs of my past images :)
Edit: I have edited|added the correct exif data on my original post to avoid confusion and misdirection.

You will have to purchase an adapter first. Nakakabit kasi yung filter sa adapter. Reviewing the thread, there was a post saying that it can be bought for 1,900 pesos somewhere in the Makati area. It's an adapter and a hood. I got mine here in Beijing.
There are also generic adapters, cheaper.
As for an EB, I'll be coming home 22nd and out the 3rd of January. If anything comes up and time permits, I'll join in =)

I guess many here will agree with me that Hidalgo is the best place to get a camera and the matching lenses and accessories, both in terms of availability and pricing. (I bought my Kenko UV filter there for Php450).
I'm also wishing for an EB among the S1,S2 and S3 owners. I still consider myself a newbie in digital photography and I want to learn more about it and the S3.

ReD Ognita 12-13-2006, 06:35 AM hi,
is there a good and cheap lens for S3? probably for extending my zoom capabilities..
thanks! Here (http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/S2tele.html) are sample images of S3 with different brands of matching telephoto lens.
For prices... well, prices always differ. You can Google up the make and model of the lens to give a good-enough price range.
There's also an FAQ (http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/S2tele.html) on their page.

melmiranda 12-13-2006, 03:50 PM Here (http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/S2tele.html) are sample images of S3 with different brands of matching telephoto lens.
For prices... well, prices always differ. You can Google up the make and model of the lens to give a good-enough price range.
There's also an FAQ (http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/S2tele.html) on their page.

ReD Ognita 12-13-2006, 05:47 PM Hey RED, thanks for the Link it helped me a lot. Im still learning and discovering my S3 No probs dre. We are all in the same boat here :) Learnin' and sharin'
Just tinker with your S3 a lot. In my case, there are times na hanggang sa banyo, kasama ko. Testing testing.
Try to remember the settings that worked and did not work. If you could, don't erase "test" pictures so you can go back at them and read the datas at a later time.
As for other phone numbers of Hidalgo stores, try using the search function of the boards. A friend of mine was able to acquire contact info using this forum. Or you can try Goog'ling for it.
Or some members will just post up numbers =)
Edit: Typo

Tingin ko ok na unit ang s3 before ko pag-ipunan ang dslr. Medyo decided na po ako sa unit. but can you guys give your comments about the unit, or maybe a suggestion for an alternative? tnx!
