totiastilla 02-09-2010, 10:00 AM guys...sorry yes i was having breakfast :) this thread is like mark says...it's a free-for-all, come as you are, no holds bared home for everyone who wants to learn and have fun and make new friends and share ideas and anything else you could think of.
I've been into photography for, well, just about a year now. and I've seen a lot through my view finder. I've been through landscapes, cityscape, moonscape, nightscapes (duh!) and cupcakes. I recently tried out portraiture which is a lot of fun. playing with lights and models...that did not sound right but who cares! you guys get my drift anyway.
with all of these in my pocket (and my HD) there is one thing I've learned. And that is, I have not learned a lot. YET!
so with all that yakin bout everything the bottom line is that I've learned only through experience and spending time with friends with the same passion.
I usually hang out with mark....errr master mark (naks!), his wife donna, baby Nash and of course my Clai. we all have been talking bout going through this road in a, well, fun way. what better way than to have a bunch of lens-heads with us.
"lahat kasali! kasali lahat!"

my nephew has been using it and it is perfoming quite well .
i want to be a part of a group where i can really learn :)

event photography is a must try! lighting conditions are really weird and a pain in the ass especially in concerts and fashion shows.
im planning to go into macro photography however i dont have the gears for it. i tried it once by reversing my lens without the reverse lens adapter. hahahahahaha :D
im from marikina. im always in for a shoot. i just hope i get my camera back from mayers before a shoot comes up since ill be turning it over later.

samlim 02-09-2010, 12:19 PM @ clai: i've heard that extension tubes are really hard to use at first especially for the ones that cannot af. im actually contemplating to buy one but i think i'll save a lil more to buy the kenko tubes that are able to af coz i easily get frustrated when i cant focus on my subject and i might have the tendecy of throwing it out the window if that happens! hahaha
@ian: sure your welcome here! i also have the same concern when posting in other groups since it started way way back. i can't relate. lol
zachary ballaran 02-09-2010, 12:20 PM good afternoon! you might be available later, this was posted by ms. bambit gaerlan yesterday Manila Symphony Orchestra is having a Rehearsal from 6 pm to 9 pm until tomorrow at Bonifacio Art Center (just beside NBC Tent). been there last night all i can say is you will enjoy listening to the pieces they are practicing instead of shooting. might go there again later. :)

yeah i hope so since "hot air balloon festival" at clark will be this weekend!:(
clai manangan 02-09-2010, 01:01 PM i just want to share this especially to relatively newbie like me... read this somewhere...
Composition is defined as the combining of distinct parts or elements to form a whole. In photography that definition is very important in taking quality pictures. The following rules of composition should be learned and considered but not necessarily used in every photo.
RULE OF THIRDS
The rule of thirds directs that the frame can be divided into three vertical sections and three horizontal sections. Wherever the separating lines connect is an ideal spot for a subject or point of interest. By positioning your main subject at any of the four intersection points, you are giving your subject more emphasis than if it is right in the middle of the photo. The intersection points can also work if there is more than one main subject in a photo. Most famous photographs and paintings have the rule of thirds applied to them in some way or another.
SIMPLICITY
The simplicity rule directs that you should keep the items in your photo relatively simple. If your main subject is close to the lens, then your background should be very simple in order to avoid distractions. Another good idea is to avoid objects or lines that lead the eye away from your main subject.
CONTRAST
The contrast rule directs that light subjects should be placed against dark backgrounds and vice versa.
FRAMING
The framing rule directs that using natural surroundings mindfully can add more meaning and focus to your subject. The surroundings could be anything such as bushes, windows, trees or even a doorway. When using this rule be sure to focus on the main subject and not on the surroundings that are framing it. It is also a good idea to use a narrow aperture (high f/stop) when using this rule in order to create a high depth-of-field.
TEXTURE
The texture rule can add a great amount of interest to most photos. When people see texture in a photo it can spark their imagination and make the photo more real to life. Texture would be a good idea when taking photos of rocks, walls, surfaces, hands or even leaves. In order to create texture try to compose your photo so the light is coming from the side and therefore casting shadows in key places.
DIAGONALS
The diagonal rule directs that diagonal elements or lines can make a photo more dynamic. Diagonal elements could be fence posts, roads or even tree branches.
LEADING LINES
The leading lines rule can be used to direct the eye deeper into a photo and commonly to the main subject. Leading lines can lure the eye to a subject by leading to it from any side or depth of the photo. Leading lines could be roads, rivers, tree branches or even bridges.
COLOR
The color rule is what adds interest and emotion to your pictures. Different color configurations can inspire and amaze viewers. Colors can also be used to accent certain parts of a photo.
but as they say, no strict rules in photography... the best keeps on experimenting. but knowing these things as above are some of the basics. :)

Kenko Auto Extension Tubes can do autofocus with Nikon AF-S lenses.
Hi everyone,
Got this from the filters exchange site.
"Please Note;
1. When using extension tubes the lens will not focus to infinity. The focus range will be greatly limited to a very close focusing distance.
2. There is light fall off when using any extension tube, sometimes the equivalent of 3 f-stops of light is lost when using multiple extension tubes together. This light lost can affect the camera's ability to auto focus. Manual focusing is recommended should the lens begin to "hunt" (not lock onto the subject).
3. Nikon "D" information is not transmitted because the lens is focusing closer than its programmed to focus.
4. Kenko Auto Extension Tubes are not auto focus compatible with Nikon AF-s (Silent Wave) lenses, manual focusing is required with these lenses."
I've spent a considerable amount of time tinkering ang manhandling my cam using the extention tube and reverse lens set-up. I't aint easy, i tell you, but it was fun.
If the new kenko can auto focus on non-motorized bodies, then it is a gift from heaven.

I have found the source of the info cited above, but with this additional paragraph:
"DG Series
New DG Series have upgraded "Gated-Array" circuitry to work better with the digital SLR's and some of the new digital only lenses. They still work the same with film SLR Cameras and lenses as well."
http://www.adorama.com/KNAETSDNKAF.html
Also:
"Kenko's auto-focus extension tubes are designed with all the circuitry and mechanical coupling to maintain auto focus and TTL auto exposure."

I use the Kenko Automatic Extension Tube Set DG + AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8 G + Nikon D40x combination. AF works (at least, for me).
I do not know if these tubes will AF with all other AF-S lenses. I think that it would do well to test the extension tube(s) with the camera & AF-S lens before buying.
NOTE: My Kenko tubes have seven (7) electrical contacts.

"lahat kasali! kasali lahat!"

wow!! donnil is back!!!! nice shots donnil!!! btw, can I join this group?hehehe
jeromemasinsin 02-09-2010, 11:44 PM I get it. Thanks Zach.
I agree, we learn a lot by doing and being people who share the same passion.
How about we create photo assignments? That way we can shoot one subject but we can express it in our own individual tastes.
For me, the benefits of this will be:
1) We will be forced to take photos of the subject and express our own creativity and imagination.
2) We can c&c the work of the people here and learn a lot through other's opinions and tips.
3) We can get our creative juices flowing daily and learn from the creative output of others.
4) We can see different ways of capturing the subject, and surprise each other with our outputs
5) And the most important of all, we can build creative camaraderie as a group.
We can have subjects as simple as "PENCIL and PENS" to more complex and thought provoking as "TIME GONE BY".. or something like "MAGIC MOMENT" like the post of Ian above.
The subject can be very specific like:
1) Watches
2) Shoes
3) Food
4) Sunsets
5) Street Food
or in general:
1) Colorful
2) Emotion
3) Happiness
4) Street Emotions
5) Surprise
or thought provoking:
1) Magic Moment
2) Passion and Desire
3) Time Gone By
4) Paradigm Shift
5) True Love
As you can see, the subjects are endless. :)
Maybe we can have this photo assignment for 1 week: 1 photo a day. Or maybe in a different format.
What do you guys and girls think?
Regards,
Jeck

FWIW:
I have found the source of the info cited above, but with this additional paragraph:
"DG Series
New DG Series have upgraded "Gated-Array" circuitry to work better with the digital SLR's and some of the new digital only lenses. They still work the same with film SLR Cameras and lenses as well."
http://www.adorama.com/KNAETSDNKAF.html
Also:
"Kenko's auto-focus extension tubes are designed with all the circuitry and mechanical coupling to maintain auto focus and TTL auto exposure."
http://www.amazon.com/Kenko-Auto-Extension-Nikon-Mount/dp/8000JG88JU
I use the Kenko Automatic Extension Tube Set DG + AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8 G + Nikon D40x combination. AF works (at least, for me).
I do not know if these tubes will AF with all other AF-S lenses. I think that it would do well to test the extension tube(s) with the camera & AF-S lens before buying.
NOTE: My Kenko tubes have seven (7) electrical contacts.

jeromemasinsin 02-10-2010, 01:35 AM hi jeck! i really do appreciate your thoughts! this would be real nice. guys and gals?! what do you think?! 1 photo a day is not bad. :) do we have to post it right away?![/QUOTE]
Thanks Clai. :)
Since we will post process the pics, we don't have to post it immediately. So the 1 picture a day is a loose rule. For example, in one week you might post only 4 photos, which is ok. But if you can post 7 then it will be much better. I guess what I meant was a MAXIMUM of 1 photo a day for the photo assignment. In that way, you can tweak your photo to your heart's content as long as it is within the confines of the subject.

jeromemasinsin 02-10-2010, 01:48 AM sounds fun...let's! now all we need is a subject...what do you want to shoot first?!:)
Since it is only the Wednesday of the week, we have days left before next week starts. Let's get the rules and subject vote rolling and let's have fun interpreting it. If one subject a week sounds boring for some, we can do two subjects a week. An example will be: For next week, the subjects are "PENCIL" and "Magic Moment". You can combine the two subjects in one photo or you can interpret it individually. But it will still be a maximum of one photo a day for a subject.
The rules are simple for this photo assignment:
1) MAXIMUM of ONE photo a day for the subject
2) Interpret the subject in your own creative way and have fun!!
3) No pornography. I believe people here know the difference of artistic nude and pornography.
4) No profane language and no flaming in giving critiques on photos of others. Criticize to teach, and accept criticisms to learn. Life is better that way.
Keep the tips and subject ideas coming!
Regards,
Jeck :)

You have a good point. This might get flooded with wonderful photographs. Also, a photo of the week will be nice since it will teach us to be more careful and creative in interpreting a subject.
Should we create a new thread for the photo assignment? And who will be the judge for the photo of the week?
This will be fun since it will teach us to interpret a subject in different ways. We'll learn to be creative in capturing the subject.

deja vu... lolz.
as far as i know, the max allowed in dpp is 800pixels for the longest side, but if the pics are hosted on flickr, we can use the medium size, so that the time loading the images will be manageable.
but if you guys want the pics posted somewhere else, we can always open an account in one of the free hosting sites and store the images there, post the links to the pics here and just post the winning entry here on the thread.
wachatink totitotitots?
samlim 02-10-2010, 03:22 AM i think it's fine to post the pictures in this thread. if this thread will be flooded with pictures then let it be. its better to keep everything in one thread instead of 2. I dont think admins will let us flood 2 threads.
also, its easier to track 1 thread than to switch from one thread to another.
am i making sense? hahaha i need rest. goodnight!
jeromemasinsin 02-10-2010, 03:29 AM That makes sense. I use photobucket for my images, I'll have to check though for a small scale of the images there so I won't be uploading photos that are too big.
Goodnight everyone, brb.

i agree with both of you...it will be tiresome and downright toxic to put it up in another thread. but then given our number...well we can only get bigger...i assume that everyone's going to be posting shots...hmmm...yes jfri deja vu...do you think on putting up another site for the competition...purely for that...best picture to be posted on the thread...everything else we discuss here. announcments, eb's, photowalks...everything.

clai manangan 02-10-2010, 10:41 AM Something i read about macro... intro... :) from photo journal... :)
Dept of fieldis a powerful tool when taking macro images, and it’s a technique you’ll need to understand in order to work true macro magic. You’ll generally be using very shallow depth of field settings when getting up close to the subjects, and the closer you get, the shallower depth of field becomes.
http://www.dphotojournal.com/wp-content/macro.jpg
At times this can be frustrating. For Example, you think you have captured a great image of a flower in full bloom, buth then find that parts of the image are too soft. One way of getting around this is to stand a little further back and use more zoom, but be prepared to pay the penalty in terms of camera shake.
A much better option is to adjust the aperture setting manually. Selecting a smaller aperture, such as f/16 or even f/32, will increase the depth of field and ensure that the subject stays sharp. Larger aperture settings, such as f/2.8, will provide sharp focus area that can be measured with millimeters.
However, as soon as the aperture gets smaller, shutter speeds start to get much longer in order to compensate for the reduced amount of lighting coming through the lens. At settings of ISO 100 and f/16, shutter speed will be roughly 1/60secs or even slower, which can be a bad news if you’re taking a hand-held shot because the risk of camera shake increases considerably.
You can still take the shot by using a tripod. You don’t need to get the biggest, heaviest tripod model you can find; if you choose a sturdy model, it is possible to leave the shutter open as long as you like. If a tripod is unavailable, steadying the camera against a wall, fence or even a camera bag will make things much less shaky.
Last tips, autofocus saves a great deal of time and hassle in norma shooting modes, but it’s often a good idea to use manual when shooting up close. Even the best AF can be fooled when working so near to the lens, so switching to manual is the best bet to ensure pi-sharp pictures every time.

thanks bro...will try when I wake up early enough :)

nwey, i just read through all the posts and im totally into this photo assignment thing, though i agree that a small group discussion (clai remember med school?!?! wahahaha!) is but proper to put things in place...
stay awake phoenix! i'll be right back...so many patients, so little time.
@toti: wake me up when it's cooked!:D
MarkJereos 02-10-2010, 10:50 AM It's OK doc......are we set for another studio shoot? hehehehe.......you missed the fun that night or morning? :D
iankevinangeles 02-10-2010, 10:52 AM I love the idea of jerome! Let's have a theme/concept weekly so that it'll expand our creativity and would help us get out of our own Comfort Zones..
clai manangan 02-10-2010, 10:53 AM Hello anybody i know here?
idol shammy!!! we're here! how have you been?! :)
In that way, you can tweak your photo to your heart's content as long as it is within the confines of the subject.
nice. :) at least we're not really oblige to take a shot per day. coz you see each one has different sched. some may be busy as a bee, while others are free as a fly. :) i like this! :)
hahaha.. you live again, just like a phoenix.
:D i think i know you.
Hi All.. jfri sends his regards to everyone

what's with med shool and small group discussions? :)
clai manangan 02-10-2010, 11:03 AM Since it is only the Wednesday of the week, we have days left before next week starts.
Regards,
Jeck :)
i really can't wait to start with this! :) are we on?! when do we start shooting and posting?! :)
great shots sir! the best i can do with my current gear is this...
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4029/4324749254_1b28d58b3d.jpg
not enough magnification and detail as i would want it to have...
clai, d3000 is on the opposite end of the spectrum to d3. hahaha. dreaming to have a d3 someday though if i already have the skill and the moolah! haha.
i'm in. how do we submit? i'm thinking this thread will be flooded with a lot of pics...do we have another venue to post and critique them?
maybe we can have a pic of the week as well (to put a competitive edge to it)
*inggit mode* this is how i wish my shot of the fly would look like when i first try macro. but then i got really frustrated. :( it ended up looking like... uhmmm... some creature. see?! i can't even describe it. haha! i'll look it up in my HD and try to post it here so you'll see what i mean. hehe!
can we all try to post first and cc for the first few weeks of this activity. then later on we'll try that pic of the week. please... :( am not really competitive... :( later on when we're all settled with the activity, then we can start the pic of the week. :)
clai manangan 02-10-2010, 11:12 AM i like it too. i think there's some PP done with it. it looks like some kind of a blur. but the ad at the bottom says it all. you are the poor, have you swam in a pool of garbage?
:D
oh yeah... i didn't notice that. seriously i had to go back to that post and look at your screen shot again. haha! :)
We'll learn to be creative in capturing the subject.
jerome, can we have prelude weeks... just posting our shots... then CCs... thereafter, move on to the competitive phase... pretty please... :)
deja vu... lolz.
as far as i know, the max allowed in dpp is 800pixels for the longest side, but if the pics are hosted on flickr, we can use the medium size, so that the time loading the images will be manageable.
but if you guys want the pics posted somewhere else, we can always open an account in one of the free hosting sites and store the images there, post the links to the pics here and just post the winning entry here on the thread.
wachatink totitotitots?
yeah yeah deja vu! hehe! am even trying to look it up if you said the same words. anyway, my suggestion is that we post it here for now. just for the start. :) probably have a standardized size for posting. 600x400 let's say. :)
i think it's fine to post the pictures in this thread. if this thread will be flooded with pictures then let it be. its better to keep everything in one thread instead of 2. I dont think admins will let us flood 2 threads.
also, its easier to track 1 thread than to switch from one thread to another.
am i making sense? hahaha i need rest. goodnight!
That makes sense. I use photobucket for my images, I'll have to check though for a small scale of the images there so I won't be uploading photos that are too big.
Goodnight everyone, brb.
i also use photobucket. :) yes, i also suggest we post our shots here first. :) just for now. :)
i agree with both of you...it will be tiresome and downright toxic to put it up in another thread. but then given our number...well we can only get bigger...i assume that everyone's going to be posting shots...hmmm...yes jfri deja vu...do you think on putting up another site for the competition...purely for that...best picture to be posted on the thread...everything else we discuss here. announcments, eb's, photowalks...everything.
I'd like to know everyone else's thoughts on this too. :)
ok let's all work on this. any other suggestions please. feel free. :)

great day ish! how are you today?! got any shots to share?! :)
Good day Project Phoenix!

of course jay! welcome! :) feel free to share your shots. :)
Sure bro. :) Just don't hurt my feelings ah. :))
hehe! this really made me laugh. :) it's like your saying... be gentle sam. hehe! but then again, i so agree. we can give good CCs without being too harsh or even without being too nice that all we end up saying is good shot for the sake of. hehe! we all want to learn don't we. :)
Oh no, I'm not yet married!!!! haha! Thanks for the comment :)
oh ok... just a thought. but really nice concept. probably you covered for a pre-nup event. :) hehe! i really can't stop guessing. :)

this shot is good :) however, it will be better if the heart shape shadow below the earring or ring is much more sharper to bring out that romantic feel to the photo. also since your title for the picture is "magic moments" i hope the title at the top part was also in focus, a wider depth of field may have been used. the figure at the right side of the book seems a bit destracting as well.
just a friendly critique nothing personal. hope it helps.

clai manangan 02-10-2010, 11:35 AM Yes, a small group discussion to start with and we could do this in a coffee shop or some place.
good morning peeps!
Mark I suggest we start with the small group discussions first...i think we're still young (the group) to go through a full workflow discussion. unless...you have a place ready na :)

what's with med school and small group discussions? :)
this is a good idea... let's start with a small group discussion. :) small group discussions in med school comprises of a group of 10 and a moderator to facilitate the conversation. :) but the whole idea of this SGD, is sharing of knowledge, asking of questions, sharing answers, and verification of knowledge. :)

jeromemasinsin 02-10-2010, 01:20 PM Good Morning everyone!!
I agree with the SGD, we can discuss a lot, and sooner or later we can discuss the workflows of each of us.
@ Clai: Why not, a prelude week will get our creative juices flowing! :)
So shall we begin the prelude week next week? What's the subjects for next week? Get the vote rolling guys and girls!
My choices of subject for next week (we can pick two or suggest other subjects):
1) Coins
2) Watches
3) Toys
4) Colorful
5) Desire
6) Decay
7) Surprise
8) Magic Moment
9) Time Gone By
10) Surreal
For the prelude week, the rules already apply :)
1) MAXIMUM of ONE photo a day per subject
2) Interpret it in your own way and have fun!!
3) No pornography
4) No profanity and flaming in giving and accepting critiques from others.
So what do you think? We can pick two subjects, then interpret it in our own creative ways for next week, starting Monday.
Regards,
Jeck

SGD means Small Group Discussion... Brainstorming to gather ideas, share knowledge, and resolve issues if any. :)
PhillipBiboso 02-10-2010, 02:03 PM Good Morning everyone!!
1) Coins
2) Watches
3) Toys
4) Colorful
5) Desire

ronimanaysay 02-10-2010, 03:59 PM guys, what can you say about the 50mm f/1.4 lenses? is it good? or should i get something else? i really have no preference for subjects..
and one more thing, stupid me...whats the difference between an AF and AF-S? ( clai, we can use this as learning issue for our SGD? harharhar!
thanks guys!
alex_germino 02-10-2010, 05:01 PM guys...sorry yes i was having breakfast :) this thread is like mark says...it's a free-for-all, come as you are, no holds bared home for everyone who wants to learn and have fun and make new friends and share ideas and anything else you could think of.
HELLO fellow Teamd40 mates....
so you guys finally decided to leave your fellow Teamd40?
well, i guess it's about time! hehe..... boring na ba sa thread natin?
have fun and learn from each other....
God bless and goodluck!

I hope the SGD will be regularly conducted... for me that's the best part of forming a group, aside from shooting.. :)
@Brod ALEX.... hi bro :) i'm here... still 1000kms away from manila..hehe
samlim 02-10-2010, 06:03 PM guys, what can you say about the 50mm f/1.4 lenses? is it good? or should i get something else? i really have no preference for subjects..

Hi roni,
50mm 1.4 is one the sharpest lens at 50mm for nikkon. It's great especially for low light condition since is has a really wide aperture. the bokeh that you can get with this lens is absolutely amazing. the downfall to this lens is its price compared to the 50mm 1.8 which relatively as good as the 1.4
I have the 50mm 1.8 and i've tried the 1.4 a few years back and IMO if you want a relatively sharp lens and your on a budget get the 50mm f1.8 instead.
please note that these lenses doesnt AF on d40, d40x, d60, d5000, and d3000.
On the other hand. AF lenses doesnt have a focus motor inside the lens and will be dependent on the AF motor of your camera body to perform AF. AF-S lenses has built-in AF motor so it will AF on bodies without AF motor such as the d40 and can focus quietly and more quickly.
I suggest you invest on a flash instead. Kit lens + Flash can make wonders!
jeromemasinsin 02-10-2010, 06:25 PM Desire and Decay gets my vote! :Smoke:
These are good ones. Keep the votes coming! You can also vote for something very simple like "Coins" (for those who may have a hard time interpreting broad subjects).
I also vote for "Decay" and "Watches"
Desire - 1
Decay - 2
Watches - 1
Love - 1
Romance - 1

thanks for sharing! :) really great help for noobs like me. :)
depends on how you shoot hehe :)
let's say landscape?! do i really need a flash here?! to thinks there would always be that natural light source. made me think. hehe!
thanks sam! point considered!
btw, sori ulit a...whats bokeh? i always get that sheepish grin when i hear it...sounds like...
The term bokeh is used to describe the portion of a photograph that is out of focus behind the area of principal focus in a picture. When you see a portrait that has a creamy soft background and a nice crisp focus on the person being photographed, you are seeing bokeh. The shape of the highlights—sometimes round, hexagonal or other geometric shapes—is determined by the shape of the aperture in the lens.
in my own interpretation, malinaw ang subject mo as in real sharp then yung background blurred. hehe!

well doc...it would still depends...like what time of day you shoot...sometimes it can be used as fill flash when the on camera can't supply as much as the flash gun...something like that...
goes the same with all the gears you'll be purchasing eventually...think of how and what you shoot...:)
im just saying...but if you are a gadget whore and you can spend for it why not:D

got it sham. :) thanks! we're actually considering getting a flash. thinking... the thing is in my case, am more into landscapes and it's just lately that i tried portraiture. i don't see much use of the flash though in landscapes esp when taking shots of scenery in broad daylight... ie. beaches... mountains... but as you said -- fill light. :) and of course for strobes... hehehe! so am reconsidering. :) but how about upgrading?! hehe! :)
why isn't it i don't seem to get anything at all?! hehehe! :( please explain the metering thing. :(
