View Full Version : Wine and Beverage Thread
allanmendez 03-09-2008, 03:14 PM I've learned that with a lot of practice, experimentation, and a will to try new things, the technical aspect of making good photographs will just come naturally. Wine and beverage are new subjects for me to explore and experiment with. Very challenging but fun to shoot. Photographing these subjects require a particular set of skills, but once mastered, you will find they can produce some very satisfying shots. As with food, your main aim will be to make the drink look as appetizing and natural as possible. Feel free to share your wine and beverage shots and enjoy.:)

PInk Cocktail - I like the controlled lighting that was used. :)
Blue Cocktail- When I looked closely (see: upper part of the bottle) there were two unidentified reflection that was captured on both sides of the bottle that I find a little bit distracting.

you got nicer shots Allan!:) same with the others. regarding your question,
I shot this on top of a blackglass table, underneath was a 580ex zoomed, 2 white boxes at each sides and one 530ex zoomed on top.
It was really challenging!

Hello again Edner!
Here's what I learned from kuya allan when we did our product (bottle) shoot last time that you might find helpful, He'd spend quality time to move the white board untill he gets that perfect highlight hitting the glass. He'd always asked me this (w/ one eye shut *lol*): "Do you see the highlight Rochelle"? And then we'd adjust the size of the highlight (by reducing or increasing the amount of light or by moving the white board) according to our taste.
Regarding the unnecessary reflection, I think you also just need to play/move the white board and it helps a lot to keep your eyes open for those little distructing things that might affect the image. Our resident "tabletopper" allan might wanna add a few more suggestions actually.. Calling kuya allan!
Nice water shot by way! :) Product Photography is certainly an addictive thing to do!
allanmendez 04-10-2008, 02:45 PM Glad to see the results of your project edner :)
Keror and blue Cade, I agree with Rochelle, the bottle's surface are reflecting some distracting reflections. If you want to eliminate those unwanted reflections, your first step is to identify which objects in your room are being mirrored in the bottle's surface. After this, here are some strategies from which to choose from:
1. Eliminate objects that create unwanted reflections.
2. Block the light falling on the distracting objects.
3. Darken the object (if blocking the light from the distracting object is impossible).
If you want the liquid in the bottle to glow, you could cut a silver reflector about the size of the bottle and place it behind the subject. You'll probably need to light this reflector separately to get the glow you want. You could also try this in shooting beer:).
Just in case you plan to reshoot, start with finding the best bottle possible, not just a perfect label, but glass with no spots and scratches/nicks or just simply clean your wine bottles. I mentioned this because I'm also seeing some tiny white dots in your bottle's surface.
When I shoot wine bottle, I'd normally start defining its edges by moving my light and white board reflector around then after that, I focus my attention to the label itself. If you want to get a cleaner shot of the bottle, try removing the back label if there's any.
You could also try Richmond De Jesus' tips (http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showpost.php?p=372677&postcount=25) in shooting wine bottle. I find his strobist's technique very helpful.
Here's some inspiring tips that I learned from Don Marr of Amherst Media:
The first decission to make when photographing a still life or product is whether you will show the object as is or transform it into something more than it is. The best still life and product photography is able to do both at once. It can give an accurate representation of the object but also make it seem magical. Try to achieve both.
I hope these could help you in your next shoot.
Ps. I am not an expert, I just have the time to shoot 6 hours a night. I have learned quite a lot already and I just want to share these stuff with you.
allanmendez 04-10-2008, 02:49 PM you got nicer shots Allan!:) same with the others. regarding your question,

allanmendez 04-10-2008, 03:09 PM Tips for shooting beer.
"The liquor business is a lucrative industry. In fact, it is one of the few industries that seems to grow even when the economy is down.
To shoot advertising images for breweries, there are a few things that you need to know: bottles and mugs are usually made of glass; most beer must glow; beer is cold (in North America at least). There's nothing like stating the obvious - however knowing these facts is an important part of the process of figuring out how to tackle the shot. Since the subjects are partially glass, lighting will involved creating and controlling speculars. Since liquids are involved, glows must be created. Since the liquid is to appear cold, sweat has to be created on the glass surface. Since sweat is a liquid, the labels on the bottles must be waterproofed to prevent soaking through".

Hi Jayque, I like how you defined the edge of this bottle, but I find the umbrella's reflections a bit distracting. Also, this beer bottle would have look better if you remove the label in the back or just simply lower your camera perspective to hide back label. I've never seen such a nice San Miguel bottle like this one before. TFS.

thanks rochelle... the bottle was hung by a string (i think t'was the one used for fishing) and a pole below to give the bottle angle. i positioned 1 light with blue gel behind a tracing paper (background) and 1 light on softbox on camera left to produce foreground light and highlights as well... i was meticulous not to blow out the details from the highlights...
the hard part was, getting the shot that i want. lol. i think i spend almost 50 shots to get this one chamba...

I'm also curious of how you made the background to be plain white/black and where you place the bottles to have a reflection like that. care to share for a newbie like me? :)

How did you make this shot ?
georgeesguerra 09-13-2009, 08:15 AM My share:
Done with a single speedlight on a 20 sec shutter at F22, I did some light painting as described below:
1. green gelled flash on the black backdrop
2. hard flash lower-camera-right behind the bottle as backlight (to capture the smoke)
3. diffused flash upper-camera-center in front of the bottle to bring out its details
Alright alright... cheated a bit on the icy smoke! hehe. By holding a block of ice above the bottle to better intensify the smoke (you'll notice the smoke creeps down to the bottle from something above it). Had to move real quick to achieve all these!
