Hi Clemn,
i am a proud owner of a beautiful 85 1.2 lens. I am not sure though how much it goes for. All I can say is that it is worth every cent it costs.

sorry can't give a specific amount. just wanted to express what a beauty it is.

Hi Pilar, Thanks for the info. Just bought a 50mm 1.2L. . . I find the focusing in 85mm1.2L smoother (fluid) compare to my 50mm 1.2L. Both lens are using USM ring right. Maybe you can give some inputs. Thanks. :) :)

I don't have the 50 1.2 so I really cant make a comparison. But the 85 is smooth when it focuses. (it weighs a ton though...especially with the 5d)

I have not been bothered by it. focusing at 1.2 is tricky though. you need to use the focusing points with out recomposing otherwise you are off...as they say nyarp:D will post a couple of 1.2 shots.

Thats a good entry lens for the 85. you can always upgrade later. For me it is a need since I am always dealing with lowlight situations.

ok, i know it's about toys but i did think about this one when the 50mm 1.2L was launched. i think the diff between 50mm and 85mm in terms of focal length is a bit interesting in that if you slap the 50mm on a 1.6x crop, it is almost the same as having the 85 on a full frame like the 5D. usage-wise, i think the 50mm on a 1.6X or an 85 at ff is the most optimal combo for portraits and street-shooting.

since i already have the 85mm 1.2L, it didn't make sense for me to dream about the 50mm 1.2L for the reasons stated above. I'd probably get a 35mm 1.4L instead to max the 5D's full frame. but even with that, i'm already happy with my 17-40L. all i really need now is a 5d... which is amazingly hard to source from non-mall vendors at this point in time.

of course, since it's all about toys, the 85mm 1.2L is a classic and, well, it's a matter of wanting it at this point. can't blame ya. and, yes, it's quite sweet, bokeh, sharpness and all that.

as to the weight, i don't mind it at all. personally, i think it adds to the stability factor of taking a shot. it acts like a counter-weight of sorts to my shaky hands, enabling me to go a couple of stops lower than the usual 1/focal length rule of thumb.

just a different spin on this thread. hope you don't mind me sharing my somewhat contrarian thought on the matter. good luck and hope you share with us the outcome of your decision. that 50mm 1.2L must be really sweet :)

Isn't it a general rule of thumb to jump a focal when putting together a primes-only kit? Like 24-35-85-135 or 20-28-50-105?

Personally, I find the 50 and the 85 too close but I suppose the 85 will be designed to give smoother skin tone renditions?

When will Nikon come up with their D200-full-frame replacement? :D

@ Raul,

Yes I agree with you.. you do get used to the weight. I normally have 2 bodies on me when I shoot a wedding. The 5d and a 20D. I always have the 85 1.2 on one of the bodies.... some people just get shocked when they try it...compared to the other lenses.. oh and I dont intend to get the 50 1.2 since I have and 24-70 and am happy with it...

Raul,

I don't mind. No prob ... since you own a 85mm 1.2L . My own observation is the spinning of the fusing ring of the 50mm 1.2L is not fluid compare your 85mm 1.2L as well as the fusing speed is little bit slow on 50mm. I am just wondering because both lens are using USM ring mechanism. When I turn the focusing ring its just like my 24-105 4L.

raul_echivarre
12-14-2006, 11:01 PM
Interesting, Pilar. I'd assume that you'd have the 85 mounted on the 5d almost always and maybe your telephoto on the 20D. Any reason why you'd have the 85 on a 20D? Ever so curious... I have my 85 on a puny 350D and at that length, unless I walk further away, I usually end up with tight crops :)

Hi Clemn,

I actually find the focusing ring on the 85 a wee bit too soft, almost like it's loose. But a lot of people seem to like it. Ever tried the focusing ring on a Leica Summicron 90mm? Now that is one sweet lens. Tight and yet well calibrated such that you can see the change in focus with every minute turn of the ring. That's why I almost always put my 85 on AF unless I'm shooting in really low light. I'd prefer the focusing ring on the 85 to be on the tight side.

My understanding is that it is a hardware problem and not a software one. This can be addressed by using their special UV+IR filter.

Currently, the magenta cast on black causes a lot of problems in color photography. However, some consider this a boon in b+w photography as it reveals suble tonalities in the darker zones - the preferred medium of documentary photographers.

I read about having to use the IR filter and I thought it was to make the colors even more vibrant and not to "fix" the magenta cast. So how much is this filter on top of the 5k you need to shell out for the M8...?

David, Look at pre-owned of ver.1. They "said" version 2 is faster. I personally do not see the significant difference. I think its just me, I see difference in the glass of ver.1 being a tad warmer. The 1.8 and 1.2 have similar outputs in the mids. Its the extreme apertures where the fall off happens, and the money spent counts well.

My 85L-II is my favorite lens prime (maybe until I could afford to get a 200 2.0 IS). I've had the 135L and 200L (200 2.8) but as long as the FOV works and as long as I don't shoot moving objects (the 85L-II is still slow compared to the 135L and 200L), I would usually pick the 85L-II. The bulk of the front element drawfs my 24L, 35L and 50L - it makes you think the lens is saying "Bring it on!!!"

BTW, try calibrating your screen, the last pics posted are a little bit yellowish. Nice shots nevertheless.

David Tong

Rob, I used a gold reflector on those, but forgot to switch WB from Cloudy... So that's a capture error on my part hehe. Those are still straight JPEGs.

Note the high shutter speed allowed me to freeze the raindrops.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3188/2770139315_ed6496ba21.jpg

Still straight jpegs from cam.

@Rob again: What's your AF method (technique) when using a lens this slow? My preset AF point (the one on the right-of-center) allows me to lock AF on subject's eyes most of the time, but still, a slight shift on the subject's part will render the image OOF... I guess newer/better cams with more AF points will work better?

I've started using AI-Servo this afternoon which seems to be better as slight movements are tracked pretty well compared to One-Shot...

Beautiful bokeh and really nice light, David. The subject (your son) really pops out. I've noticed, even with lovely bokeh, sometimes it looks like the subject was photoshopped on to the background. But your photo has a great 3D feel to it.

Is it the light or the lens or both? What time did you shoot this, please?

David Tong
08-17-2008, 11:00 PM
Winston: I realized that as well. With such a wide aperture, there's little transition between the sharp and the blurred anymore from certain angles, it's like putting a center-gradient layer with Gaussian Blur...

I think it's the lens that's giving us the 3D look. While I can replicate the fore/background blur with my 50mm f/1.8, or a 200mm f/3.5, this 85mm's contrast is quite amazing compared to the previous cheap lenses that I've mentioned.

While I'm impressed with the background blur, it's not really that surprising and it's easy to replicate simply with longer focal lengths, it's the amount of flexibility of "separating" each element in your frame that made this lens so much fun (and hard) to use. See this photo taken with an old M42 200mm f/3.5 lens at f/5.6, the blur is even better, but the working distance is too far to get that amount of blur. The 85mm range is quite perfect for portraiture.

The wall sign was taken at 3:14PM, while my son's photo was taken at 6:19PM - note that the sun sets at around 7-715pm here in SG at this time of the year. I was lying on the ground when I took that shot of my son, that's the only way for me to get some foreground element into the photo. The sun was behind and left of my son.

You should try taking that behemoth out to the beach David. My experience even with my dinky-compared-to-the-85 1.2L-nikkor-85 1.8 I got awesome surf shots. with the extremely high apertures you will always most absolutely freeze water droplets, but will almost all the time miss your subject because of the extremely high apertures.

I remember trying out this lens during a cousin's wedding (nino and pilar were shooting and hence how I came to know of DPP), Nino let me fire off a few n his 5D and I was absolutely blown away! Note that this was still the version I of this lens and already i was salivating.

If there's one word to describe this lens... it'll be CREATIVITY... There's just so much fresh ideas you can try with ultra shallow DOF and max shutter speed. :D I don't think I've ever used 1/4000 at ISO 100 that often in a day before hehe.

Took the 85 out to town instead of the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM (http://reviews.davidleetong.com/?p=122) with my son to check out the F1 fever downtown today... I missed using this so much.

This lens is just a great creative tool. Technically, there are quite a few faults that you can’t ignore, specifically fringing, which is worse than whatever cheap lens Canon has released, and minimum focusing distance.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3246/2892215428_fa02cc8b18.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidleetong/2892215428/)

Note that the fringing is still visible when the subject in under a shade.

However, the lens just allows you to do so much with it even with a relatively long focal length.

You’d be spoiled to shoot at f/1.2 all the time especially when you’re shooting from a distance where depth of field is lesser of an issue.

At higher ISOs (400 and up) you’ll still be hitting 1/500 or faster most of the time in dim lighting, which is a tremendous creative advantage! I’m curious as to what this beast can do with the newer 50D and 5D Mark II where ISO 1600-3200 are still as clean as my 10D’s ISO 400.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3179/2891376987_bfa570d33f.jpg

The photo above was taken underground train station with "normal" indoor lighting (note the lack of harsh shadows, evident of diffused fluorescent light instead of well-lit interior). The EXIF was:

1/250 @ f/1.2 @ ISO 400

Normally, I'd need to reach for 800 and 1/80 for such a shot at f/2.8. In addition, I was on an escalator moving downwards, this was a mere snapshot with movement from both the subjects and camera, the crowd was just frozen with 1/250 sec.

Here are a couple more taken this afternoon… It’s such a joy to use that I didn’t even mount the EF 24-105 F/4L IS that much unless I can’t move back further.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3032/2891376335_d8ce7aac61.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidleetong/2891376335/)

I don’t care how much this lens costs, I don’t care if the consumer level EF 85mm f/1.8 is technically superior in AF and usability, if you love portraits, save up for it…

Used it again last night for a wedding reception shoot. It's still an exceptional lens to use for portraits but under stressful conditions, it's quite hard to use... I got quite a few lack of DOF shots with it, and I'm not used to using flash at f/1.2 as well hehe. User error, though hehe.

Hey David,

I had the chance of testing this lens on my 400D during the Canon Photographer's night. I noticed the slow AF during that time but I suppose the reason for the "slow" AF was because it was dark and the lights are on the stage only. Under "proper" lighting or say in broad daylight, how would you fare the AF speed of the lens?

David Tong
10-14-2008, 08:53 AM
it's still slow, the weight and size of the glass really can't be "moved" by the USM that quickly. At f/1.2, AF accuracy will take a hit regardless of what camera you'll be using. As mentioned in the article, even if you get af lock, the AF sensor will lock on the general spot that fits the size of the sensor, but the DOF of this lens is much smaller, so the variances within that af-point's coverage needs to be addressed.

sir david,just a simple questions:

what is the minimum focusing distance of the 85L? coz i'll be expecting my order to arrive either first or 2nd week of december...cant wait to have it in my arms:)

and regarding filters, what filter brand would you suggest ? i'm leaning towards marumi, since most of my glass have marumi filters....but a lot of nice reviews about B+W...

David Tong
11-23-2008, 10:07 AM
Ian: I'm not a big filter advocate (esp UV) so I don't know, but I like B+W's thin profile so I use those. As for the min focusing distance, it's 3.2ft, compared the the 1.8's 2.8ft.

gud day guys
@ sir marco: just a question sir, as i usually read it from online reviews as its cons, is the af speed really that slow, lets say compared to a 50mm 1.8??

David Tong
03-02-2011, 09:09 AM
The AF is slow because of the amount of glass there is to move and the focus accuracy needed due to the large aperture. It's about the same as most macro lenses. Focus speed also depends on how good your camera's AF is as well.

85L users, do you encounter focus issue when your battery is low??? :Scared:

i encountered it last night while playing 85L on 550D with blinking battery indicator. it was normal today with fresh batt on 550D...

Focusing is definitely affected due to the lens' electronic focusing system and it utilizes the camera battery when turned on.

thats what i suspect, also tried 3 other lenses & only 85L has issue... will also try on 5D2 with low batt...

Cool! I'm thinking of getting this baby or 135L on a cropped body. If I was using ff, I'd probably get 135L first, but since I'm using a cropped body I figured I'd get this beast which is dead smack in the middle of the so called "Portrait Trinity". Need to wait a little longer though, tax season is coming lol!
