Based on the first two posts, i guess this means you really like this program and it's a given everyone knows what to do with it. I'm a recent convert to mac still learning about the mac, (still running everything in XP on the macbook through bootcamp :) old habits die hard, as for xp, it's running pretty well actually but that's another discussion). What do you like about iphoto? What do you use it for? The slideshows and layouts are quick and easy, even the editing is easy! do you do raw and jpeg editing on iphoto? does it even need plugins for the raw? what's your workflow? how do you archive and backup? I can't even find my files from the hard drive, so i don't know where Iphoto stores them. bert dalusung 07-30-2006, 05:23 PM I use iPhoto for photo management--getting images from my camera, storing them, looking at the images, doing minor editing, launching Photoshop Elements or Lightzone as needed for more editing. iPhoto stores the original file when an image is edited so that its possible to go back to the original if necessary. iPhoto handles raw files but since I hardly use raw, I have not much experience with this ability. iPhoto can export the images to other formats and/or other resolutions. I use it to downsize images I place on the web. iPhoto also allows me group images as "albums". Photos can be assigned to more than 1 group. I also use the slideshow feature to build videos of albums which allows me to show family pictures easily. iPhoto also has a set of useful print options. I can print several images in one page using standard print sizes. To find your images, go to the Finder and look for the "Pictures". There will be an iPhoto Library folder and this is where the images are stored in various folders. But be careful, if you disrupt the arrangement, iPhoto may get lost. iPhoto does all the above in a clear, intuitive interface. I'm very happy with it. Try it, you may find it useful, too. enjoy_gaw 07-30-2006, 10:13 PM Wow it does seem like a very capable program. i guess it's best to just plunge head first into it and just start using it. just a few more questions though. So iphoto makes multiple copies for every change, won't that bloat up the system? If i edit and then burn a backup, do i also save the original? If i rotate a picture, is it really rotating a copy? or just the tumbnail(like adobe bridge)? Is the roll method a better way to organize than the method used by adobe bridge? If i edit in photoshop, do i end up working with the copy? would the new result end up in iphoto? jake_borres 07-30-2006, 10:44 PM @jon I just updated my iphoto...any new improvements? Haven't used it yet...using aperture kasi. dindin_lagdameo 07-30-2006, 10:51 PM I use iPhoto to organize my photos... Yes, it can bloat your system when you modify images. In Finder/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Orginals, you'll see all the photos. Once you modify an image, the modified file goes to the Finder/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Modified. When you burn a back-up, the safest way to do it is to back-up both originals and modified folders. I don't merge the files since some use the same filename. (uhmm, that's why I don't modify using iPhoto. I use Photoshop instead.) Rotate on the other hand is a real rotate. I found out when I opened the same file in Photoshop and saw that the file was rotated already. Re: Organizing... I use iPhoto. And on days I open Bridge, I still use the organized files done in iPhoto. Accdg to Rolls (or the assigned names of Rolls) Editing in Photoshop, I get the file in the ORIGINALS folder in FINDER... save the edited file in another filename and save it in the same directory. This edited file doesn't show in the iPHOTO LIBRARY when you open iPHOTO. If you want this seen, you'll need to drag the photo into the iPHOTO window but you'll need to drag the file to another folder first since it has to be imported to the iPHOTO (re-indexed into the filing system of iPHOTO). I don't do this anymore unless I want to see them in iPHOTO. Quite tedious. I know there's an easier way but I'm still getting to familiarize myself with iPhoto 06. Not quite sure but I think there's another copy saved in the DATA subdirectory as well. Please verify... Carlo R. Lopez 07-31-2006, 12:01 PM i am really getting irritated using iphoto. it is bad as a cataloguing medium and filing photos can be a pain. i especially find it tedious and repetitive dragging files from the picture folder back and forth. ive lost a lot of photos in the process. i also have not been able to figure out how to prevent duplicates from being copied. i basically have to sort em manually and delete from there. as dindin has mentioned, there are may things to keep track of when transferring files, am still learning to use it and pretty sure my feelings for it will change sooner or later. enjoy_gaw 07-31-2006, 05:50 PM you lost photos in the process?yikes! are you saying that for every correction you make on iphoto, it makes a new copy? Carlo R. Lopez 07-31-2006, 06:48 PM you lost photos in the process?yikes! are you saying that for every correction you make on iphoto, it makes a new copy? yes when you edit in iphoto, you will have the edited copies stored in the modified pictues folder. and yes i lost a lot of photos becasue i played around with the main pictures folder, that was my fault:) enjoy_gaw 08-01-2006, 06:28 AM ive been playing around with iphoto and can imagine that it really becomes bloated after a while. Even if you've deleted it from the library, it's still maintains copies in the originals and modified folders. Does iphoto have a batch rename feature? or should this be avoided since it might cause you to lose photos? what i also miss are the exif data, i don't know where they are. Carlo R. Lopez 08-01-2006, 12:24 PM just lost another batch of photos, am sending my computer to apple for data retrieval. im going to look for another program |
