Hello,

Just got a new 18-200mm VR lens today and when I half press the shoot button, I notice that there's a soft "click" sound emitted by the lens and another "click" sound again after I release that button. However, when I turn off VR, the lens focuses very quietly.

Should this be a cause for concern or is this a normal characteristic of VR lenses? I haven't encountered this issue on the only lens I've had like the 18-55mm kit lens and my current 50mm f/1.8 prime (but this one has a noisy focusing sound) so I'm kinda puzzled.

Also, I notice that when I carry the camera facing downwards and the zoom is not set at 18mm, the lens slowly starts to move towards 200mm due to gravity. Is this normal as well?

Thanks sa replies !!

This just means that your VR is working! Hooray! I've had the same concern before when I heard that on the 70-200 VR. I called Adorama and they assured me it's just the VR working.

Re: Gravity Thing

Yes, this is very common with the 18-200. It's called creeping. All units have this... though at the 18 end, it locks a little but when you start walking, it creeps back to the 200 end.

This is one of the reasons why I love the 28-200, zoom lock at 28mm. I think nikon should have kept this feature on most of their zooms, especially the 18-135 & 18-200 VR. Makes life just a little easier.

Peace!

Oh i see. Whew! Normal lang pala yung mga concerns ko and ganun sya talga.

I wonder why Nikon forgot to put a lock feature on the lens, I'm worried I might hit something and damage the lens one day while its extended hehe.

howdy. just to affirm everyone else's observation, the soft click sound is normal, even for the 105mm f/2.8 VR. and yes, creeping is a common occurence with telscoping lenses.
