About say 5 months ago, I was toying around with my D70 and taking pictures of droplets with my trusty 28-200 and Sb600, the shots came out ok but not really that spectacular. For a few days now, I've been toying with the CLS System of the D80 (and really wishing i had my SB600 back) and was surprised that i can sync the CLS flash to get shutter speeds as high as 1/4000 sec, needless to say I was a very happy photographer and the shots look more stunning than they did with the D70. :D

Anyway here's one shot for now, will be processing more later on.

Nice. So, did you use an external flash along with your d80? Does the d80 trigger an external flash without having to use the pop-up flash? Sorry if this question is dumb but I just got an s600 and am seriously eyeing that d80.

How did you managed to control the strobes off the camera? I thought the onboard flash is limited to sync at 250 only. :D

@Giovanni de la Cruz
I used the pop-up flash to trigger the SB800, in the commander mode for the pop-up you can set it to just trigger the remote units with out using the flash itself (preflashes only) I had the Sb800 sitting about an inch away from the faucet when doing this. It's scary but produces good results.

@Rolly
Strangely enough when you turn the pop-up flash off in commander mode, the camera reads it as if there's no flash at all, hence the high shutter speeds.

Thanks, ken. So, does it only work with the sb800?

nope works with the SB600 too (set to remote). I think all of Nikon's current Speedlights are CLS compatible.

Thanks Ken

I still don't understand all this CLS hooey stuff but from reading your posts, you set the pop-up to "---" in the menu right?

This means it (pop-up) still fires pre-flashes that sends commands to the remotes BUT keeping the shutter closed while doing this. Once the remotes gets the command, it is only then the shutter actually opens to expose.

Yup, you can also control your SB-600 with your D70s.

Thanks, ken. So, does it only work with the sb800?

No!

The pre-flashes doesn't control the shutter. It's just that the flash signals are too brief. probably more than 1/128... but if you are close to the subject, you will get the pre-flashes as an ambient light. Solution, increase the shutter speed.

Thanks Ken

@Rolly
Thanks for expanding on that

@Dave
Yup I had the onboard set to the off setting and group A set to TTL +3ev, this way even with the ridiculously high shutter speed i get a balanced exposure.

Thanks!

Also, note that this setting only really works when the SB800 is in close quarters. :)
