Have you tried www.dpreview.com (http://www.dpreview.com?) ?
They have reviews for both camera, they even have a side-by-side comparison for both cameras so you can choose what really fits you. And I suggest that you get to hold each camera for the "feel". In order that you may be able to compare which camera is more comfortable for you to hold.

Hi. newbie here also. I wanna know if its ok just to buy a P&S (prosumer, high-end) cam if you're interested in pursuing a career in photography or a DSLR? Coz I plan to buy a cam and I still havent decided what to buy. A DSLR is kinda out of my budget range, so I'm thinking of just buying a good prosumer cam like Canon S3 IS. Really need help. I'm seriously considering a career in photography and I want to start it soon.

How much is a Nikon D50 or D40? Coz my budget right now is around 20-25K only. And where can I buy one?

Hi Ron:

A D40 kit (through Henry's) in Quiapo costs around 32,000. Not sure if the D50 is still being offered.

Thanks.

Mods: Its a Canon thread :)

? Sorry, can't really understand what you were saying.

Are you saying you can't use zoom while using AF? If I understand this correctly, which I really don't think I do , you're trying to make the camera zoom in automatically just like a P&S? If so, you can't do that as dslr lenses zoom by manually rotating the zoom collar on the lens barrel. There are no buttons to control the zoom.

yep.. i decided im going to buy that S3.. although there have been many reviews and comparisons on S3 and Sony DSC-H2/H5, the S3 really stands out if you're just starting on photography..

the zoom button you may be referring to is for viewing the picture on the LCD screen..use the zoom buttion to zoom in or out of the picture

you have to manually zoom, i.e. manually turn the zoom ring - but not manually focus if you are on AF mode...:)

Does a powershot have a manual zoom on the lens? Just want to clarify :)

I would recommend that photographers who own cameras with digital zooms avoid using this feature. This tends to degrade image quality. You would be better off using the optical zoom feature of your camera lens instead. :D

you mean maually turn the zoom ring right?

Jo Avila

Not necessarily. Some digicams have an optical zoom feature that requires pushing a button to change the focal length of the lens. A SLR user would manually turn the zoom ring.

All that digital zoom does is that it makes a certain portion of the image bigger. This usually results in the digital image looking pixelated.

Turn the lens knob; if it turns then it zooms.

i use a 400D, just got it dec. 06.

(lemme share a story)
my smaller sister is p&s county. she also tried zooming in and out using the 2 buttons on the camera. she depressed almost every conceivable button, and she thought it would do her justice using the turn knob:Shock:, which still didn't work- until she asked for my help.:D
