View Full Version : The D5Klub
zenarboledajazul 12-09-2009, 04:15 PM Guys/Gals,
As from the previous thread, we are putting-up this new Team of Nikonians. It will be called D5Klub, so all Nikon D5000 users are very much welcome. By the way we are looking for mentors, meaning those more experienced in this world. Doc Carlo is one of my candidate, so sir please don't turn me down.
Let's represent and make some noise as for this great Nikon model the D5000!
{To the Moderators: Please allow our new team to have this space. Thanks!}
rolando_baluyot 12-09-2009, 06:10 PM wow, a new team!
think we non-motor body shooters should get together for a grandiose shoot-get-together! :)
more power D5Klub
EricObias 12-09-2009, 06:47 PM yey a new club!..first off, let's get to know each other and post your reason why you chose this cam and share some experiences with it so other interested with the cam may get some insight!:
1. Eric - at first I was choosing between Nikon d5000 vs canon 500d. d90 was out of the picture since i find it too big and too "pro", i want a smallest cam possible with the best specs and at that time, the d5000 fits my bill. Since most of my friends and family use Nikon so I decided to go with Nikon. Now I'm borrowing some of the lens my brother does not use often like the 55-200 non vr. The tilt LCD is a bonus and heaven sent, have shot videos and candid shots with it. Since it is small relatively and "not intimidating", my wife is enjoying using it too. After i made the most out of my kit lens, i decided that i should buy a prime and made me worried that i have limited choices because of the lack of motor, but then came along sir kenneth's thread on the superb 35mm. Since i bought the prime, it's been on my cam for 90% of the time. Next up for purchase was speedlight and got myself a sb600. The d5k+35mm combo is so compact, i always bring it with me whenever I go out. I also bought a small 3 compartment bag that can fit the speedlight and extra lens if I go to special occasions. That's it, have been a very satisfied d5k user for 5+ months :-)
zenarboledajazul 12-10-2009, 12:13 PM Team,
Let's try to use this new thread, not to stop the other thread since that is where it all started, but to banner our new name, our new team!
My story-- by the way call me zen, almost same story with eric. Choosing from D5k and 500d, read and scrutinized a lot of reviews then I found a site wherein it compared same scenes, with the same settings and made me decide to get this better model. My mom is coming back from states and asked her to buy this for me. She got the 5k for 1k, body + 18-55mm vr + 55-200mm vr + 2 instructional dvds + 4gb sandisk sd..(gud deal--hehe!)
No regrets at all, very nice model and good decision to be with the superb Nikon system!
@S'Rolando -- thanks for dropping by! yeah maybe someday... :D
CarloNasol 12-10-2009, 02:24 PM Oks... I'm in. could the DPC team also join? :)
pot lapus 12-10-2009, 02:25 PM Wow Doc Carlo what can i say mentor tormentor ka na pala idol
miggi.p.solidum 12-10-2009, 07:13 PM yay! D5Klub is here hehehe
my story...was originally going for Pentax and was making the rounds at the Pentax forums for quite a while. It was originally a Pentax vs. Canon thing as I came from an S5 IS bridge cam and I thought that having a Canon as my first DSLR would make my life easier. Fast forward to Halloween weekend where I found myself walking the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui looking for that little camera store that Roland Lim had picked top 1 in his blog. For reasons too long and boring to post here (it's actually in the "Why Nikon" thread), it turns out that I'd be blowing my budget out of the water if I get a Pentax. So it eventually came to a Nikon vs. Canon fight and as with the other members here, it was the D5000 against the EOS 500D. When the storeowner showed me the D5000, for some reason it was love at first sight hehehe. I bought it with a 55-200 tele and an SB-600.
My camera hasn't quite been broken in yet and it's still a little over a month old with almost 2000 shots on the clock but all I can say is, what a camera! Very satisfied owner here and yes, the tilt/swivel LCD works wonders.
zenarboledajazul 12-10-2009, 07:34 PM Thanks for sharing your story bro! 'Love at first sight' tlga ah.. eheheh
Keep it coming!
miggi.p.solidum 12-10-2009, 11:41 PM 'Love at first sight' tlga ah.. eheheh
hahaha...still can't believe even now. how should I explain it...I mean both cameras are equally capable. but it's the D5000 that's now sitting comfortably on top of my study table. I still have absolutely no idea why I liked the D5000 the moment the storeowner got it out of the box hahaha.
lemuel cueva 12-11-2009, 04:02 PM oy pasali..! ok i'l go on w/ my story, (naks) this year last june actually i started canvassing and do some research about slr, from pentax, nikon, canon and even sony i consider also. after a massive research and review down to nikon and canon, and the question by that time is w/c unit or model, for a canon my only choice by that time is 450d or 500d, for nikon i had 2 choice actually, d40,d60. i think every mall here in dubai and even the salesman i talked all of them, of course they have their way of convincing style. however when i hold and had the chance to shoot the d5000, its different, though its my first time to have an dslr, holdin a cam is not something new to me, because i have lots of friends and a hobbyist also, sometimes they will let me use their camera.
to make a long story short.. im really happy to have d5000 as my first dslr.
and im verry happy that there is "nikon d5klub". yeah! its my first group to join also here in dpp!

yup sir eric, actually i gathered all information i could get and convince me if it really works, (sigma 70-200mm f2.8). because,if not my choice by that time it would be nikkor 60mm macro or 50mm. or if not i would by sb 900 and tripod at the same time.
how many member so far the D5KLUB?
mikedimaguila 12-15-2009, 04:30 PM Ahh so dito na pala magpopost dapat instead of the other thread? ahehe dapat pala dito ako nagpost kahapon regarding yung tailor made camera straps and bags, well if you guys are interested check the old d5000 thread :D more power sa d5k :D or ok lang ba irepost ko yung previous post ko in the other thread here?
miggi.p.solidum 01-03-2010, 10:53 PM This thread hasn't been popping up for a while now. I figured that since we now have this team thread, maybe we should start posting our photos here.
I'll get the ball rolling.

monds_alsado 01-04-2010, 12:47 AM wow another thread for d5000 users! can i join??
you can call me monds, my interest in photgraphy started 3rd yr college with our photog101 subject and the rest is history, i started fiddling with our kodak camera that uses 110 film and later bought a sony cybershot s700.
i've been lurking dpp forums for a year now reading reviews regarding what camera to buy, it was really 1 year in the making, i was planning to buy a nikon D40 around christmas 2008 but my budget got short, then came november 2009 and im all set to buy but unfortunately they phased out d40 and d60 already so back to square 1 reading reviews and forums regarding what body would be "swak" for me.
i was torn between nikon d3000 and canon 450d, went to hidalgo asking how much for both cameras and both of them are within my budget, i cant remember the store but a lady asked if theres stock of D5000 and i was like "D5000? havent checked on the specs of that cam ah?" i went home and googled for d5000 and found out that feature wise, it has added features compared to 450d which is really the one i wanted that time, but to make the story short, i decided to get the d5000 because of the following
1. cheaper than 450d
2. it fits well on my big hands
3. its a NIKON
i bought my toy last december from mayers and luckily its not part of the batch that has power issues, afaik, the bad batch was the one manufactured in july, correct me if im wrong and most of the d5000 out there doesnt have issues anymore so thats a relief for us! hope i'll learn a lot from you guys! photoshoot na!!
Jeremy_Ang 01-05-2010, 10:05 AM OMG .. ive been actively posting and updating the OLD thread.. didnt checked this new one.. :D:D:D
Doc Carlo .. mentor mentor! when is the photowalk?
Hi Guys, I owned a D40 before , and got it when i was 2nd yr college taking up FINE ARTS in Bacolod, and a PNS Cannon IXUS which I learned to practice my framing skills and open my mind of interest in the world of photography. Just got my D5k last July 2009 . And its freakin' awesome. Tilt lcd / AE bracketing / fps / ISO and all.
Tilt LCD + 55-200mm VR = pictures of an "unwilling vitims"
I love NIKON since D40 came out. Call me Jhem and im a proud D5K user. !!

Madz.Madrasto 01-05-2010, 05:33 PM hey guys! same story with me. i was choosing between 500D and D5000. but the factors that made me choose D5000 over 500D are:
1. In-camera RAW/JPEG Editing
2. Articulated screen
3. Looks more professional
4. Better performance at higher ISO
5. Better grip, felt solid in my hands
6. SCENE modes, though I don't use them
7. Interface feels great.
8. Lamp assisted focus, instead of using the flash like 500D (saves battery, and less annoying)
.
.
.
And more... But the real satisfaction was when I actually started using my D5000. Never regretted the purchase. Totally satisfied!!!

franciscoonorIII 01-06-2010, 07:19 AM i thought i was the only one torn between canon 500d and nikon d5000. its been a long debate by myself with myself. . i was amazed with the pics taken by my friends using their canon and already leaning towards getting the 500d due to video capability but i still have my panasonic video cam so i eliminate the video feature. price was also a very big consideration for me , i want to get the d90 but cannot do a spot on cash which is cheaper that to get the 12 mos 0% aside from the fact that i dont have the resources yet to spend that much for a gadget. when i found the nikond5000 i instantly compare it with the canon 500D and nikon d5000 won ( price, reviews, user friendliness) . reading countless sites of reviews and versuses, i decided to put my heart on it though i wasnt able to see an actual unit yet. i got it last xmas as gift to myself from myself. i havent read thoroughly the manual yet and theres still so much to learn. im so happy that i was already able to take great pictures even im not yet very familiar with everything.
im really looking forward to learn a lot from you guys so i can start to save and invest on a good lens.

cydrick quijano 01-07-2010, 06:49 PM hey guys,
i also have the d5000, just bought it last dec 29,2009. very nice cam, and it's my 1st DSLR, actually, my 1st cam as well:)). really love this tiny devil and the big things it can do. still a noob at photography. so hopefully i can learn a few tips from the "masters" on the forum. i initially intended to buy the d60 a year ago but the budget was cut short so it got postponed for a year then by the time that i already have the resources, the d60 was already phased out. i was contemplating on buying the d3000 until the last minute i changed my mind and bought the d5000 due to it's feature packed design. no regrets ever since. d5000 rules!

franciscoonorIII 01-09-2010, 04:40 AM I miss the Ruins! :D Abandoned Spanish mansion.. One place that "A must" visit for photos. That place look awesome too in the morning around 5-6am. Gives more dramatic effect. Did you also went to Silay beach and Bacolod's Mambucal Resort?
Unable to go to the beach anymore as well as Mambukal because two of our companions were already there the year before but on a higher note, we were able to go to Bahay Negrense ( still got the chills ), the new airport, bacolod museum, new bacolod city government ( great at night time for photo op) on top of the night parades and party.. .

Donnil_Daguno 01-10-2010, 05:47 PM elo!!!! newbie here... been a member / lurking this site for almost 2 yrs...
glad that's there a group for D5000 users now... just got my cam last Sept. 09, and i havent used it that much... i'm still new when it comes to dslr... been wanting a D90 before, since i asked my dad to bought it in KSA, no stock available for D90, then i said why not try D5000, since i'm just a beginner, this might be a good cam for me.. so far i'm loving my cam, and i cant wait to join a photo op/eb and learn more...
sample shots, so far...

mikedimaguila 01-13-2010, 12:30 PM Well I'm not sure who should facilitate pero us members could very well setup the club ourselves while the mentor/mentors arent available yet, i guess we can all discuss the kind of club we'll be having here, sayang kasi if (ok lang kaya taglish?) we were to just leave d5klub as a club on the forums lang, ive seen great clubs die down just because they stayed as a club sa net lang :) So those who are interested kindly post what day your free and what time of the day and location. so should I start the list?

Funny thing is no matter what kind of optics nikon makes its sure to be expensive this one still sells at $289 considering this was a model 3 years ago, there are other models that cost just as much as a d90 :) FYI other manufacturers that people never thought made rifle scopes are zeiss and swarovski

Jeremy_Ang 01-13-2010, 10:08 PM Hi Joey, nice street photos. try using ISO 200 esp on outdoor/daylight. The lower the better to reduce noise & reveals its sharpness..

and i do also use a lot of "Orton" effect (soft focus)on picasa before. Not until I learned the mechanics of metering. by then I started abusing its advantages. Especially on "bokeh".

Definitely .. welcome to D5Klub
You can start from here.. :)
A - when i want to blur background for portraits or take landscapes
S - when i want to emphasize motion, slow shutter for fireworks, falls (needs tripod), fast shutter to freeze action (1/200 above will do)
M - rarely used, only when i want to fix aperture and shutter which is very seldom, think landscape shooters mostly use this one.
P - rarely used, only when DOF or motion does not matter, more of like point and shoot
when i don't want the exposure given by 'A' and 'S' like for example it's too dark or too bright, i just adjust the exposure settings.
As for low light, don't be afraid to boost ISO up to 1600, d5000 is very good high iso performer, if still not enough, you need flash definitely..

welcome bro! i remember the first time that I also decided to delved into photography. there was a series of tutorial video in youtube that somehow gave me the crash course of some of the basics about photography. i think this can absolutely help you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGF0tgOXjEw&feature=related
this is just the part 1. you can easily find the other related videos, there is a total of 5 videos to complete this tutorial. after you have watched these videos, you will be able to understand most of the basics and you should be able to start from there. i hope that this will be helpful to you as it was to me.

zachary ballaran 01-17-2010, 09:58 PM hi since im a noob how do i do light writing? haha
Hi Bless, if you want to do light painting, set your mount your camera in a tripod, set it to Bulb mode, use a flashlight or any handheld lightsource then start writing in the air. thickness/visibility of the light will vary depending on the speed of your writing. HTH :)

Hi, If you dont have a remote/wireless shutter control for bulb mode. Choose "S" or shutter priority and set it to 10" or 30" (secs) depends how long you want your shutter to stay open.
The longer shutter stays open the more lightsource comes into the sensor.
1. better do it in dark room/area and if not set your cam to low exposure.
set your tripod , press trigger and start painting

Jeremy_Ang 01-20-2010, 08:25 AM Finally got these! Looks nice! I just have a problem balancing my lenses w/ these. Is the Phottix batt grip any good?
Hi sir ryan , Im not sure coz I never tried using batt grip yet coz I assumed that it might be a problem with the tilt lcd. :D But from the old D5k thread one of the guys uses a batt grip.

ryanhayudini 01-20-2010, 10:36 AM Thanks Jeremy. I'll take the D5000 for a spin. Its just a bit off balance when using it w/ the 17-35. I just wished the LCD screen was of the same resolution as the D90.

ryanhayudini 01-20-2010, 03:45 PM What's a good LCD protector for this? Something that will cover the whole area of LCD and not just the display? The GGS protector is too thick for the LCD to close flipped backwards. The CD-R king protector is "bitin" and I got the bigger one to cut it out but did a horrible job.
Tried my old 300mm ais lens on this;
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2773/4289466249_45a6f9342f_o.jpg
Image results;

mikedimaguila 01-20-2010, 04:09 PM sir ryan the capdase protectors are also bitin, ive yet to see one that covers the whole area, i took out my capdase and had the ggs installed, the capdase had a matte finish which made it hard to see the picture detial clearly, id go for the ggs one since i dont turn flip back to the covered position anymore, What i love about the thick one even though you cant close the lcd when its facing the camera body is that the part thats transparent on the screen protector is floating above the actual lcd surface, so thats good coz theres a space between both surfaces, in the event that something hard hits the GGS screen protector it would scratch the protector but it wouldnt break the lcd glass, as with the protectors that lie completely on the surface of the screen, the once force is applied on the protector its transferred directly on the lcd screen so it'll take much less force to brake the screen than the one with the space in between, i guess the selling points would be
GGS - nice for reviewing pictures great protection but you cant rotate the lcd
towards the camera
body anymore and close it
Capdase - Really thin protection against scratches only, but doesnt cover whole
of screen and the matte finish blurs
a lot of the detail on the screen
Another form of protection i like which i actually have is the camera armor putting your camera down on a table without fear of placing it over scratches or water on the table that you didnt see is quite satisfying :D and it didnt add to the size of the camera too much, i actually love the feel because ive got big hands so it fits better for me, it comes with a lens hood looking protector but i didnt attach it cooz its too bulky, i bought the rubber lens hood which you can move backwards if you dont want to use it as a lens hood, I swear my d5000 is now bullet proof ahehehehe, yun nga lang the camera armor is 3500 in ghills

Yes I bought my 50mm 1.8AF D around 5,800 last year. If you're after DOF get the nifty fifty . You'll get use to it for manual focusing or unless you save up and get the nifty 1.4 :D. or alive 35mm 1.8.

geraldnadayao 01-23-2010, 08:15 AM good timing! :) .. BULB mode? or burst?

I think what I did was a long exposure left the sensor open for 25 sec.
I only got this http://www.flickr.com/photos/38502623@N02/4296059828/sizes/l/
its not cropped yet unlike the first one
Sorry I don't have any wide shots. there was one thing bothering me about those night shots I always saw one or more red dots on my photos every time I take night shots as its seen on the linked photo above and this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/38502623@N02/4295899339/sizes/l/
I hope someone can enlighten me what those red dots mean.
@monds: Thank you for the warm welcome. :)

ah ok .. shutter priority for 25"? .
about the red dots you mean the photo result itself? I can see red dots on the foreground. But if it is glare you mean. Removed filter when doing a night shot especially on long exposure and attach your lens hood again. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. Yup the red dots on the photo results.
edricbelerma 01-23-2010, 10:30 AM Sir Jhem, how do you let the sensor open for more than 30"? (aside from bulb mode) Can you expose it at an accurate time say 55"? Thanks!
Jeremy_Ang 01-23-2010, 11:22 AM Sir Jhem, how do you let the sensor open for more than 30"? (aside from bulb mode) Can you expose it at an accurate time say 55"? Thanks!
Correct me if im wrong, Max of 30" manual/shutter priority, after 30" it goes to BULB mode. If you're going to use the wireless remote . It'll be TIMER mode this time. But the longest exposure I tried was 1800secs (30mins) . Havent yet explored the work around and timer control settings of D5000.
Timer mode , works like a shutter release cable. Once press shutter/remote button it'll remain open until to you press again to close the shutter. I was expecting that it'll stay open for an hour. Got back to my camera and checked, it only stayed 1800secs.
Here sample below what I did for Star Trail test. It'll be better if it remained open for 1Hr for longer trail. :( I will let you know if we could set it to preffered time.
Because so far phottix shutter release cable doesnt work on D5k. End up going back to hidalgo and tried all shutter release cable. Discovered it'll only work on D90.
Havent tried shutter release cable-remote yet. Some reviews on other forums mentioned that it works.
Time 11:00-11:30pm Batangas Lipa.
mounted for 45 degress.
No filter used lens hood only. Noise reduction off.

@monds: Thank you for the warm welcome. :)
@ sir gerald, i think those red dots are hot pixels, they say its normal for all dslr's but correct me if im wrong on this one. the cause are pixels on the sensor that fail to sense light correctly. much like dead pixels but those are seen on lcd screens. i also have 4 hot pixels on my d5000 but they are only visible if you magnify the image at around 100% but i really dont bother, ive read before that they are really normal in dslr's.
solution for them is by remapping the image sensor but i dont know how much would that cost. if youre unit is from cdsc i think they can remap it for free if its still under warranty.
HTH. Happy shooting!
noelpulido 01-24-2010, 02:35 AM hello sir's and mam's.. I'm a new member of DPP, and also a new owner of a Nikon D5000. I got my camera last December as a gift from my parents and my loving wife. At first I was eyeing the D90, knowing that the D5000 had no motor unlike the D90, which would mean I have limited lens choices. But being a novice at photography, and this is my first DSLR ever, I have to say I'm very happy with my camera and I'm a very proud owner of a Nikon.
I hope that I meet other members here at DPP, especially the D5000 users. Looking forward to learning more, and also to share my own amateur shots. :)
To start off, let me share a few..

noelpulido 01-24-2010, 01:50 PM thank you Jeremy.. I've been looking at your pics, they're all great! you're right I should have composed the picture better, I wasn't able to get the whole bike into the frame. anyway, I'm learning a lot, although mostly from readings thru the internet, and also by readings here in DPP and looking at the member's pics and posts.

thanks for viewing.
Jeremy_Ang 01-24-2010, 09:51 PM Thanks noel :) very nice batch of photos you have there sir! , lighting and dramatic photo on the 2nd pic .
I also just started to learn more about photography and was never that serious before from my old D40. Although Im still looking forward to enroll for basic textbook shooting.
We were still hoping that there's someone who'd be a mentor for D5Klub.
So learning while waiting...:D:D
And one thing that I like about this team is that most of us are still in a growth process to the world photography ,we're learning from each others' photos and research from online tutorial and tips too. not bad at all I say..:)
This is a great start for us.. and cant wait for our 1st EB.
The 55-200mm VR? Loved it & abused ! :D:D
monds_alsado 01-24-2010, 10:20 PM nice shots sir noel and welcome to d5klub!
noelpulido 01-24-2010, 10:39 PM thank you Jeremy and Monds.. :)
about the 55-200mm VR, I've seen the thread with the pictures using this lens, makes me want to get that lens even more.. hopefully when I have the budget.
about the 2nd pics, I have to say I got that dramatic effect by chance, was just experimenting with natural light from a window, then moved the subject in and out of the direct sunlight while tweaking on the settings.. my wife loves the pic, too.. it's one of our wedding gifts.
here's another shot of the gift with a different setting and a little bit farther from the light..

I'll have my 2nd attempt at a pre-nup photoshoot this coming Sunday.. I forgot to mention, my wife also works as a freelance creative director and stylist for pre-nups. she's done shoots for Distinctive Photography. If we could attend the EB, I might get tips and advice that I can use for our shoot.
Hope to see you all there.

Continuous shots will not synchronize with your pop-up flash and yes it'll work on external flash. Tried it before using SB600.

mikedimaguila 01-26-2010, 04:12 PM goodafternoon dpp so all in all whos good to go on jan 30?
Sir Joey were you able to get your camera armor?
Sir Jerick, if your not on a tight budget id suggest the sb400 or the sb600 if you want something with a little more option, I've tried the nissin di622 and it doesnt work well with the nikon ttl, but if your looking for a small flash unit just as good as the sb400 that works great with the nikon ttl id suggest the sunpak rd2000 it costs around 3,800 to 4,500 i have one myself and i love it
Joey Alcaraz 01-26-2010, 06:23 PM Good evening Dpp D5Klub!

I'll have my 2nd attempt at a pre-nup shoot in Corregidor on Sunday, since my wife will be the couple's creative director and stylist. We'll be resting and preparing on Saturday for the shoot. Anyway, I'll be posting pics from the shoot, hopefully I'll be able to get some keepers with my kit lens. :)
Any tips from our experts? Thanks in advanced.

nice! Corregidor has a lot of good "still-life" scenery . Your kit lens wont disappoint you sir.
Never good with strobes as of now.. natural light will be your best friend.
Tips from a noob :D. you already have a skill for composition.. you will indeed get some keepers with your kit lens..
Hope you could catch up for the EB sir noel . :)

Thanks for the tips sir. Actually, the official photographers also let me borrow one of their SB600's. But I won't be able to do strobes, aside from the fact that I don't really have any experience with it. :) I hope I can get closer to the couple, since I only have my kit-lens, I can't get too close because I might get in the way of the official photographers. Still trying to find a sponsor who can let me borrow their lens.. (which reminds me I need to text them now hehe).
Otherwise, I'll have to use my kit lens, and hopefully my brain juices flow with creativity and imagination.
We'll try our best to attend the EB.

-btw, has anyone tried the sigma 18-250 OS HSM? i read a lot of good reviews about the lens.. some say it's even at par with the nikor 18-200 VR.. i'm actually planning to get the lens, just need more feedback on it form people who were actually able to use it..
Jeremy_Ang 01-28-2010, 07:55 PM I heard Sigma 50-150 f2.8 HSM II very good lens and its sharp/DOF for telephoto. :) hihi:Grin:
jerick rivera 01-28-2010, 08:33 PM goodafternoon dpp so all in all whos good to go on jan 30?
Sir Joey were you able to get your camera armor?
Sir Jerick, if your not on a tight budget id suggest the sb400 or the sb600 if you want something with a little more option, I've tried the nissin di622 and it doesnt work well with the nikon ttl, but if your looking for a small flash unit just as good as the sb400 that works great with the nikon ttl id suggest the sunpak rd2000 it costs around 3,800 to 4,500 i have one myself and i love it
thank u sir mike
do u have any idea where can i get it at that price?
tia:Grin:
