For most of the nikon users here who attended the Party I guess you already knw my sad story. For those who dnt knw he's my sad story.

My 3 week old D200 purchased last Nov 14 at Henrys hidalgo died! Kidding aside it had a very annoying defect last tuesday. The external flash (sb800) would POP on its ow even without touching the camera buttons. We tried (some friends and I ) changed flash units, used my sb800 in other camera bodies and so on and on..... the verdict a possible shorted hotshoe.

the sad part is since i bought it at Henrys at hidalgo they WONT replace the unit even if its less than a month ( a grey market unit ).They will repair it though, so i have to wait about a week . And YES no Service unit too.

My D70 was a grey market to but didnt have problems till to date. shshshshshs

So lessons learned here, buy from columbia!!!

It's a minor repair. Ken Go's D200 had the same problem and he bought it from Columbia. :)

Hmm.. I hope they send it to Columbia or Nikon HK for repairs, and not to some corner guy who's good with mechanical cameras but totally clueless with the newer electronic bodies.

One thing that might not come back in 'original condition' is the body's Batman suit - it's hard to return it to it's original 'tight' fit once you strip it off to get to the screws that holds the casing together.

Having said that, don't worry too much, it's a minor issue.

It was terrible with the D1x - it came off by itself after about 6 months of use. The D1x, D1h, D2h, D2x, and D200 all use real(?) rubber and for some reason, Nikon uses a double sided adhesive that makes it easy to remove when repairs are needed but also causes the suit to slowly detach from the body esp when enough stress is placed it (the best analogy is the rubber grip on steering wheels, they adhesive eventually wear off and you get this irritating 'loose' portion that twists around that actual wheel.).

Oh well...

sorry to hear about your d200's quirks dodie.
on the rubber grip....hmmmm... gets me to think of just holding off the replacement.

@manny- thnks . hop eis till there. :)
@dindin- If they wont replace it what more if I ask for a refund.? It wont happen even if I report them to DTI. they have been in the business for so log and they get away with it so often. This is the risk I have to pay for. sad to say, I got a lemon unit. huhuhuhuhu

hi dodie,

sorry to hear what happened to your D200. actually i also have the same one which i purchased only last september. so far, everything seems to be ok.

when you purchase your camera, did it come with a "nikon digital imaging limited warranty"? my purchase came with it so i thought i'd ask you if yours came with it. i am not sure what kind of warranty is being offered there sa pinas but with all the nikon purchases that i've made (including film camera and lenses) ., they all came with a warranty. if you do no have a warranty, i would suggest that you write directly to nikon and tell them your dilemna. make photo copies of your receipt, etc. and keep a copy of everything for your file (if you need to follow up with them later on).

goodluck, man!

@Dodie, I wouldn't classify that unit as a lemon just yet. It's a simple mechanical quirk, a small percentage of Nikon's get that problem and it's easily fixed. More like a loose screw or something rather than a chip malfunction.

Have to agree... it wasn't an innate problem to begin with.

@dodie, You mentioned that the verdict was a possible shorted hotshoe. Was there a time when you took off the flash from the hotshoe without turning the camera or the flash off?

Hi Dodie, was this update due to the fact that Nikon will replace the camera due to warranty (not by Columbia, more likely to be HK or Singapore warranty) or were they pressured by the fact that you have posted your dilemma in forums (and discussed this during the Nikon party as well)?

Btw, am happy that they are opting to offer you a replacement unit.

Did you know it could be the hot shoe of your flash? some reported this happening not only to D200 but to D70 as well...

Read here (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=21079483).

I wouldn't feel great if my camera was opened only to find out that the problem is not with the camera. :D

Yahooo!!!! today is really a good day. Go word from Nicholson that my D200 replacement has arrived. Yes I got it this afternoon.

Funny thing we tested the same unit and it wont pre flash on its own anymore.

Thank you very much to Nicholson of Henry's cameras as he was vey accomodating. I am now a proud owner of a brand new D200.

fyi, to date there are only 2 ppl who I know that has this unfortunate experiece . Ken Go and myself. Its a fluke and I hope it wont happen to any of you guys.

I was assured by Nic that he will sell it as a 2nd hand unit after it has been fixed, acdg to columbia techs its a minor "chip" inder the hotshoe.Very few of these things has happend. unfotunatley I was one of them. Life goes on.

everything works except for that "pre flash" error. Ppl thougth I got the shot when my flash pops not knowign I havent touched a button.
