Jo Avila 05-09-2007, 10:39 PM @ Joey
I find the outcrop in the foreground of the first image a bit distracting. I would have preferred that the reflections be more visible and whole like the ones you have in the second image.
The horizon also doesn't seem to be level.
Exposure is spot on. Nice job.
BTW, I'll be in Singapore this month. I also hope to do some night shots of the cityscape :D
Joey Gutierrez 05-09-2007, 11:06 PM Thanks Jo. Yep I agree with the tilt, no PP on this kasi .. only the automated framing and shooting info from the exif.
As for the crop, I can't do anything about it as I was limited to 28mm plus 1.5x crop factor hehe. I can't step back or the speeding cars or trucks will hit me haha. I took that from the Benjamin Sheares' bridge, part of one of their expressways. I'll go there again once I get a hold of 12-24mm :).
Ohhh, we can setup a nightshooting escapade then :D hehe.
Joey Gutierrez 05-09-2007, 11:08 PM On the tilt issue again, I think my camera's horiz alignment is off. At shooting time, I'm quite sure it's level. Or it must be the vibration from the speeding trucks, as shown with the somewhat soft effect on the buildings? Will have to check on it in detail :D.
Jo Avila 05-09-2007, 11:10 PM @ Joey
You could have made sure that your camera and tripod were level while shooting :D I recently found a something that I had misplaced. It's a miniature spirit level that I place on my camera's hotshoe. It's perfect for levelling the camera whenever I shoot with a tripod that doesn't have a spirit level built into the legs and head.
I've already been contact with a few photographers from the othe forums. An Singapore EB is already in the works. :D
Joey Gutierrez 05-09-2007, 11:14 PM Yeah, I ought to try those spirit levels. I have a hunch my cam's horiz alignment is off. I'll get one together with the WAL.

Hi David,
Nice shots!
May I ask where the Temple is? I'll be going to Singapore in July and I have this thing for Hindu temples.
Cheers,
Winston
David Tong 06-18-2007, 09:25 PM Thanks, there are quite a lot of Hindu and Sikh temples around, this one was near the Malay area near Katong area and is called Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple. I wanted to go in but they were having some sort of a prayer thing and I don't like to bother people in their worship places, the folks were friendly and were inviting me in, though.
There's a big one called Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple in Chinatown, I think that's one of the bigger ones around.
Just google "Singapore Hindu Temples" and you'll see a bunch... Wasn't able to go out during Vesak Day, the festivities were plentiful around the Little India/China Town and other areas.

Thanks, too, David! I must admit I wasn't all that excited to go to Singapore having been there many times, but your photos have piqued my interest. This is the first time I'm going there on vacation, (we're visiting my wife's husband who works there), so I'll have a week to go around and take shots.
Speaking of which, would you have any shots of Sentosa, especially that huge aquarium?
David Tong 06-18-2007, 11:42 PM No I don't have any photos in any of the "tourist attractions" actually, will wait for my son and wife to visit before I'll go there, chances are if I visit alone, the money I'll pay will be wasted since I'll either not take any pics or spend too much time taking pics.
I just bought a street map, grabbed all the brochures in the tourist booths and walked hours and hours everyday.... On average, when I tour, I walk past 5-6 consecutive MRT stations hehe.
I honestly hated the merlion park, waste of time IMO for a "signature" location...
Speaking of which...

Winston Baltasar 07-16-2007, 01:22 PM Thanks for the photos, David. Just got back from the Merlion City early this morning. Will post my photos of the Song of the Sea light and sound show as soon as I process them.
I got some good deals at Cathay Photo. :) Should never have looked at camera equipment at Chinatown, though. The salesman at Ritz Photo kept trying to con me.

David Tong 10-27-2008, 08:42 AM It was a spur-of-the-moment decision that I wanted to go out and shoot something tonight. It has been a long time since my last “travel” photo-walk and I had the opportunity tonight as the kids won’t have school tomorrow and they went to bed early.
http://monologue.davidleetong.com/wp-content/gallery/deepavali2008/DeepavaliSingapore2008-21.jpg
It’s the end of October and Hindus celebrate their colorful Deepavali festival, also known as “Festival of Lights”. While the event can be celebrated anywhere, it is in the heart of Little India where everyone is headed for the past few nights.
I invited my friend, Mike to shoot with me as we met up at around 7PM and went on our way.
The subway ride to Little India is already an indication of the scale of the event. I’ve never seen the subway this jam-packed on a Sunday!
Everyone in Little India was in a festive mood. Smiles were everywhere and folks were just happy to have their photos taken.
We were tired after the 3-hour crowded walk, but we had a blast. Hope you enjoy the gallery.

Hi Dean,
Thanks for the feedback, Pic 3 - I used already the ruler from CS4 to straighten the horizon. I think because of the bridge causing this tilted view, i guess but not so sure too
I will share more once I activated my Pro account in Flickr, some nightshot I took is temporarily hidden to me :(

There's no secret behind the photo. It was just luck, I guess, and the time being 11pm might have helped. People were more relaxed and were not moving really much for the 10 seconds that I needed.
The flyer is where it really is. :)

Thank you so much for you time.
David Tong 09-20-2009, 12:32 PM Ah, so you're the same guy who asked about ISO noise in PCsers :) Welcome to DPP.
The photo title says Esplanade but the Esplanade bldg and park aren't in the frame. There's quite a bit of blown highlights, blocked shadows, and clipped colors, so it doesn't really fall under HDR either.
Johnny Lim 09-20-2009, 12:46 PM Maybe the title should be shooting from Esplanade... :D
Robertson Torres 09-20-2009, 01:13 PM Yes Sir, That was me. :)

Before getting into the shooting technique section, some final thoughts about the “what” of HDR – what kind of photography is HDR good for? Until recently, HDR has found most of its use in synthetic imaging applications (ray-tracing, 3D scene modeling, and computer generated imaging such as gaming) as well as video post-production work.http://www.naturescapes.net/072006/rh0706_3.htm

Hi sir Paul,
As sir Arnel mentioned, one of the DPP ten commandments is
II) The form of communication shall be in English. :)
Anyway sir, you are welcome with the comment. I am from Bukit Batok but work around the Serangoon Area. Oh and by the way, I am only a newbie. Nice meeting you in DPP.
Keep shooting!

BadzManaois 11-11-2009, 08:10 PM Nice sharp shots. I agree with the others, try to control the highlights. You can actually apply dodging or burning of the under/overexposed areas.
HDR, you either love it or hate it. Your first HDR is not bad, imho. At least for a first try. =)
Newbie here. SG-based. Geylang area. =)

BadzManaois 05-02-2010, 09:06 PM I'm starting a new thread, this time around focusing on Singapore's places of interest.
I would appreciate all comments (nice and otherwise) and no-holds-barred critiques as I know these will help me improve my little knowledge in photography.
To start, I have here a few shots of the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort and its iconic Helix Bridge which links it to the Marina Commercial and Business District. Currently, this must be the most photographed edifice in the whole of Singapore; I had trouble looking for a good spot as shutter warriors have swarmed the place like moths to a flame:

WilsonCo 05-02-2010, 10:13 PM Nice shots.
Makes me want to go back to Singapore soon. :)
David Tong 05-03-2010, 07:34 PM Hmm, I'd skip the post-processing. They're quite carelessly applied. With the first photo, you missed blurring the bottom right corner, while the DOF blur of the hotels aren't realistic based on the focal length.
The zoom-flare thing is inconsistent as well on the 2nd shot.
Good decision shooting it at dusk though.

Thanks, David, for the comment and advice. I took the liberty to be playful with the post-processing in the first two shots. I gotta admit the post-processing was rather rushed as I was too tired after the shoot; this is not an excuse though, this one's on me. =)

The first time I visited the jetty at the Labrador Park at sunset, I was awed by the mish-mash of colors coming from the last rays of the sun mixing with the vivid lights off the oil refineries at Jurong Island and Pulau Bukom in contrast with the calm waters off the Straits of Malacca. It used to be that people could go down the jetty and walk by the shores; sadly, this is no longer allowed in view of the "fragile" ecosystem at the coastline.

"Of all the means of expression, photography is the only one that fixes forever the precise and transitory instant. We photographers deal in things that are continually vanishing, and when they have vanished, there is no contrivance on earth that can make them come back again. We cannot develop a print from memory..."

I was in Singapore last month and visited the Botanic Gardens. I am really interested in nature photography, so I need criticisms. Be as harsh or gentle your words are, it's okay. :-)

AllanAgcanas 08-16-2010, 01:51 AM honest comment.. i prefer the shots taken at labrador park. gives a feeling of tranquility
as for the helix bridge.. you are right. its one of the most photographed bridge since its opening a few months back but the closed cropping and the blurring of the MarinaBaySands seemed too edited.
also noticed that most of your shots at the marina are not long exposures based on the reflection of the sea. (other than the "Blue Hour"
your WB is a bit off for the marina bay sand shot at the helix bridge. (4th photo).
as for the panorama.. i have been to that location a couple of times but didnt choose to do a panorama in that area mainly because the left side is always cluttered with on-going construction cranes
BadzManaois 08-20-2010, 11:05 PM Outstanding Architectural shots! Love that first image.
Thanks, Gid. I'm a big fan of yours (specially your wicked IRs). =)

Thanks. LP is in my shortlist of die-die must visit places again (well, once the weather clears, that is). Join me for a shoot at the place, if you're interested.

Both editing on the first two shots were intentional; overdone, I agree. Will try to be more subdued next time. =)
The WB was also intentional; I reckon setting the WB to around ~4000K as I wanted a bluer cast on the photo.
...as for the panorama.. i have been to that location a couple of times but didnt choose to do a panorama in that area mainly because the left side is always cluttered with on-going construction cranes
The area may be cluttered with the cranes and what-nots but, personally, I still would do a pano-sweep of the area given the opportunity ( but that's me =)). The challenge was more on making sure the exposure was kept on check all throughout.
Thanks for your tips, suggestions and critiques.

Noob question here: How were you able to do your watermark with reflections on the water?
By the way, my friend just informed me that nikon lens there are cheaper compared here in Philippines. Do you have any idea on what's the store you can find that store?
BadzManaois 11-01-2010, 04:02 PM Gian, the sig was made by creating two layers, the second of which is a vertical-flipped copy of the first. I then used the gradient tool for the fade-out effect of the second layer ("refelected"sig).
I'm not too sure about the prices there in the PH for comaprison purposes but for my Nikon needs, it's either the shops at Peninsula Plaza or Funan the IT Mall or at MS Colour Ang Mo Kio (where, depending on your haggling skills, you may get some pretty good discounts).

alan ebora 01-28-2011, 11:45 AM Good day friends, i'd like to ask if there's any pinoy pentaxian currently in singapore? or going to singapore in the next few days?

chicochongchu 02-05-2011, 02:34 AM While we are in the Pentax in Sing topic... I'll be heading there next month. So I would like to ask, where is the best place to buy pentax bodies?
Last time I was there, John 3:16 Photo Supplies in the Funan DigitaLife mall had a good price for the K-7. Do you guys recommend that place? Or are there other shops out there that sell Pentax? Can you guys can recommend any? =)
I was hoping to find out where Pinoy Pentaxians in Singapore do their shopping. =)

Try SLR Revolution, look for Willy he's a good guy thay are at Funan also 4th flr.
They have Facebook too. Don't go John 3:16 I heard some bad feedback from local
pentaxians here.
alan ebora 02-05-2011, 10:59 AM bought my kr+da35 2.4 @ slr revolution through my tita. and my cam is still there. hehehe. im waiting for my mom to bring it here as she's there for chinese new year.
package price is about 36k. i dont know about k5 price.
melo garces 02-05-2011, 12:09 PM john 3:16 is a good place and has been recommemded by a singaporean i met via one of the pentax forums 2 years ago. he was very helful in giving data as to where to shop/eat/visit in singapore. too bad i could not take up his invitation for lunch at pennisnsula. funan is the place for photo equipment and the penninsula mall beside it.
he said pentax is not that common in singapore when compared to nikon and canon. just get prices here and comparee what will be offered there (there is a tax rebate when you go back, have your receipt in your name and claim at ther airport). While we are in the Pentax in Sing topic... melo garces 02-05-2011, 12:20 PM chico, i checked my files and i might have read john 3:16 from another pentaxian ppost.
my singaporean friend recommended camera workshop, p&g, and camera corner - all in penninsula shopping center beside funan. maybe you can say their stores were recommended by mt kelvin lee. my inquiries were for pentax items - remotes, adapter, viewfinder. but i guess they might have cameras too or be able to direct you to where pentax may be available.. i think emjay is now the pentax distributor in singapore (funan or pennisula also)While we are in the Pentax in Sing topic... Jamie Sy 02-05-2011, 02:53 PM I bought my AF540 from John 3:16 back in 2008. The place is very popular for Nikonians and didn't carry Pentax back then.
The guy (probably the owner) i talked to had praises for Pentax but said it's not high in demand. In the end, I ordered the AF540 from him and picked it up the ff day. He gave me the best price for credit card payment and was very friendly to talk to (unlike the rude sales people from other shops).
With the name John 3:16, how can you go wrong?
nelsonvillamayor 02-06-2011, 02:28 AM i bought my Kx in lucky plaza,
surprisingly their street price were very low at that time,
but you really have to haggle the prices with their employees,
i was very lucky because one of them is a filipina, and she's gorgeous haha,
btw i bought my Kx for almost 21000php last summer,

Glenn Tuazon 03-09-2011, 10:26 AM Nice work Jeff. I was able to shoot with the MASP group last year for one night at the "Barrage". I would love to try the Marina area next time. TFS.
jeffdecena 03-09-2011, 10:30 AM @sir Glen - Thanks po! I checked out the MASP forum and joined though I haven't met someone to shoot together =) I was looking to shoot also from marina barrage but my problem is I don't know how to get there hehe..
I also have a BW conversion which I liked better sir.. =P Hope I can meet some people within the area =)

Glenn Tuazon 03-09-2011, 10:39 AM There are plenty of places to shoot night photography in Singapore. I didn't know the marina barrage myself but I was able to ask the members on how to meet up at the MRT stations and took the bus from there. Pretty friendly crowd. Too bad I could barely remember them all since I've only met them once. You can probably go on the roof top of the Sands Casino but they don't allow tripods.

jeffdecena 03-13-2011, 10:53 PM mine is @ 18mm =) I am not sure with sir Glenn =)
gianangeloolmedillo 03-13-2011, 11:22 PM I would be in SG at the end of the month. I hope I would be able to have beautiful photos just like all the photos in this thread.
jeffdecena 03-13-2011, 11:26 PM you will have sir! there are a lot of places here that are so picturesque... just my 2 cents is, bring tripod along with you everytime you go out... so if the nighttime strikes, it is your time for those long expos.. =)
Glenn Tuazon 03-14-2011, 09:01 AM mine is @ 18mm =) I am not sure with sir Glenn =)
I was using a full frame camera with a Nikon 20-35mm f2.8 @ 20mm which has a similar or approximate 13mm field of view (FOV) on a crop sensor camera.
Here are the two other pictures that I took from the same location. I would like to see some pictures around clark quay if any of you have them. I think that's another good place to shoot some night photography.

Glenn Tuazon 03-14-2011, 12:57 PM 1st and 2nd images are not bad at all. A tripod could have helped lower the noise and improve the overall image. TFS. I'll go to this place if I get another chance to visit Singapore again.
jeffdecena 03-14-2011, 11:18 PM Hi sir Glen, are you in Japan right now? I saw your flickr and the cherry blossoms are so nice! =) Yea, if you have the chance to visit SG again, try at clarke quay, such a nice place =)

Christian Lim 04-20-2011, 09:15 PM just some images to share from last weeks trip, my wife was there tuesday my daughter and I followed from Friday to Monday for a short vacation as we did not take our kid to new zealand... was walking around with a P&S... got a little window to bring my camera for a couple of snaps.
Its been 3 yrs since I was last here... lots of changes... food still awesome at lau pa sat and newton circus. I just dont get covering up the merlion and making it a hotel.. what a waste.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5303/5633013155_b76ca69d27_z.jpg (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5303/5633013155_b76ca69d27_z.jpg)
the river was not playing for reflections on this night, i had some time to go around a bit and do some night shots but had to go back to the hotel early.. truly a great collection of structures along this area but I feel its getting somewhat cluttered already. it was hot and humid as usual... not my type of weather

on the way back from an 840pm show at songs of the sea... got to fullerton a little past 10pm for a quick bite... while waiting for our order, some unexpected clouds came from the back for a 10 minute window, just the right place at the right time from a site now neglected by photographers as they frequent the now more popular helix bridge

took this one with black and white in mind, ideally... the light show would fill some negative space or maybe some rushing clouds... none of both so rendered in mono to accentuate the presence of the steel bars.

BadzManaois 05-05-2011, 12:46 PM Gardens by the Bay
(from wikipedia)
The conservatory complex at the Gardens by the Bay comprises of two cooled conservatories – the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, situated along the edge of the Marina Reservoir. The Conservatories are energy efficient – a showcase of sustainable building technologies. They also provide an all-weather edutainment space within the Gardens.
The Flower Dome is the larger of the two, at 1.2 hectares. It replicates cool dry conditions and will feature permanent displays of plants found in the Mediterranean and semi-arid tropical regions. A changing display field has also been incorporated to enable flower shows and displays to be held within the Conservatory.
The Cloud Forest is slightly smaller at 0.8 hectares. It replicates the cool moist conditions found in tropical mountain regions between 1000 to 3000 metres above sea level. It features a ‘Cloud Mountain’ that is accessible by an elevator, and visitors will be able to descend the mountain via a circular path where a 35-metre waterfall provides visitors with refreshing cool air.

Ion Orchard
(from wikipedia)
The Orchard Turn Development, now known as The Orchard Residences and ION Orchard after its official name has been revealed on 5 February 2007[5] and 16 July 2007[6] respectively, was built on the site of the former park located directly above Orchard MRT Station. The MRT Station's Exit C was closed and demolished on 15 January 2008 to make way for the ION Orchard development. A replacement for the exit, Exit E, was open on the same day.

Dominic Villanueva 05-06-2011, 01:25 AM Nice shots sir! But I was hoping that you also took shots of the Singapore skyline from the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark (I've heard that tripods are not allowed over there though).
By the way, what software did you use for your panoramas? This is my first post on DPP! :D
errol_roldan 05-06-2011, 11:57 PM there are some good shots here. try to look for an interesting foreground to complement your nightscapes. shooting at dusk is the way to go. :)

chestercastillo 11-11-2011, 10:44 PM After going through all 25 pages, I noticed some of the shots are not taken at night. Maybe the thread should be renamed instead to "Singapore Shots". Nevertheless, awesome photos everyone! I'd like to join the mix... :)
