Hello to all Pentax users!!

Glad to finally see a place where I can talk to Pentax users in Manila  .........but sad to see we don't have our own forum here. :(

Looking forward to meeting all of you!

Cheers!

Hi Jamie,
Glad to know there's quite a few Pentax users out there - I was a bit apprehensive posting before, thinking I might not get any response, but turned out it's ok. Most Pentax stuff have been going on in the other thread (Pentax DSLR). Enjoy the forum!
Cheers!

Oh yeah, I noticed alot of topics are going on in there......it's become the Pentax forum within a thread. :)

I'll probably jump in then!

hi guys,

i'm glad to see more pentax users here. i will be attending CES next week and presenting some of my photos for exhibition using all the new pentax equipment. its a shame that the philppines supply and distribution of pentax is so scarce. the rest of the world is clamoring over the "new" pentax. maybe over this new year pentax will once again regain some ground in the philippine market.

I'll keep you all posted on what interesting new things will be announced at CES from all the camera brands.

happy shooting,

mark

I just hope that the Pentax distributors here would adjust their prices to more "reasonable" levels (e.g., while a Canon 50-200mm f/4.5-5.6 costs around P11T, a Pentax 50-200mm f/4-5.6 is tagged at P23T at Sanly - these same lenses are within $10 in price - ~US$210 at 17th St. Photo - go figure!).

Hi, I'm a wannabe Pentaxian...... local pricing and lens (un)availability just drove me to another brand last week. Temporarily, that is. I've been planning to get the K100D + 40mm + 70mm pancake since last September, but the lenses just aren't available and neither Sanly nor Camerahaus could come up with pricing. A 35/2 and 50/1.4 would have been a nice alternative but they also don't have pricing for both (I called several times). I've come to accept the 2-3 month waiting period for a lens to arrive, but I couldn't order the lens without knowing the price.

Anyway, I'm hoping that by year end more prime lenses would be available. It is one of their strengths after all. So I'm not giving up! Keeping fingers crossed and hoping to eventually make the switch.

Hi Roger! Welcome to DPP!

The FA 50mm f/1.4 is available at Camerahaus Glorietta for P14,900. :)

For inquiries, I recommend you contact Mr. Robenson Ong of Supereastasia (Camerahaus). seasia @ pldtdsl . net

Unreasonable naman price ng Sanly. May bumibili ba dun? :)

Anybody already know the price of the AF540FGZ at Camerahaus?

Roger Pantuca
01-10-2007, 01:30 PM
Hi Randall, thanks for the info. That's a good price -- like Hidalgo pricing. When I called Camerahaus last December the lady who answered the phone didn't have a price on the 50/1.4, so I kind of based my decision on that. I figure I'll give it a little more time. But now I know who to contact. Thanks!

Camerahaus Glorietta was willing to give the FA 50/1.4 at Php14K....even lower if you pay cash (not sure how much more discount though).

Hi fellow Pentax users

Ask lang, do Camerahaus offer after sales service...e.g. honor warranties? I visited their store in Glorietta last year and when I asked where can I have the camera repaired and if they honor warranties, parang hindi makasagot ng diretso. Dont know kung may updates sa warranties ng Pentax nila.

The first thing I fell in love with Pentax is that no matter how old the body or the lens, they always "mate" with each other : ) Always compatible. Unlike other brands/models of camera (with the exception of Nikon but with some limitations), they tend to make different mounts for different age of cameras. And Pentax has a wide range of "budget: K-mount lenses. The only thing is here in the Philippines, its hard to find K-mount lenses even in Hidalgo, the mecca of photographic industry.

Originally wanted a KM5D for the AS. But since Sony took over KM, I knew it would be more expensive going that way. Good thing Pentax came to the rescue!

The first thing that made me look at Pentax was this (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-02-05-02.shtml).

Then, I read this (http://www.pentaximaging.com/world_of_pentax/history_of_innovations/1910-1929/).

Then, I saw the K100D, and I was impressed. But the body size wasn't an exact fit for me.

After a few months, there was a buzz regarding a higher model for the K100D and then came the dpreview preview of the K10D.

All fell into place after that. I couldn't be any happier.

It's also comforting that Pentax really, really, really listens to it's users. If you look at the K100D and K10D, most of it's features came from suggestions from different forums for the *ist series successors. Even using DNG and the new way of ISO control for the K10D was recently just a suggestion of users from DPreview and other Pentax forums.

Just curious fellow Pentaxians why did you choose this camera instead of Nikon, Canon or Minolta?

Initially had a Oly E-300 - hard to see throught the viewfinder with an 800mm attached (Oly 2X TC + Tokina 400mm) but the images were great (still had some OM and ZD lenses after I sold the body&kit). Then bought a Canon - not satisfied with the controls and color rendition, then tried a Nikon D70 - controls and images are good but the VF is not. Finally got the Pentax *istD - good controls and VF. Sold it to buy a K10D but nearly switched to a Nikon D200 this December due to unavailability with 3 months waiting time (in Japan it is sold out everywhere - stocks are not plentiful). Got the K10D instead, luckily - last one in the shop (Shinjuku, Tokyo) on Dec. 30. It has AS, weather-proofing, great viewfinder, great controls, and the battery grip adds to its great ergonomics. Still lack the long teles (500mm above). Soon hopefully they will release the SSM lenses that hopefully Sigma implements on their 500mm f4.5 APO. Still using an ETRS and M645 though.

Back in 1990 the K1000 was one of the highly recommended and most popular cameras in Hidalgo together with the Nikon F series and Canon T, I bought it at P3,500 it was a Japanese original, bundled with it is a Pentax 50 mm 1.2 manual lens, I was so impressed with the results and I immediately upgraded to the Pentax LX, though it only has center weighted metering I think it is the best Pentax Camera that I have ever owned. It is so tough, that 15 years after I bought it still works like new, the results are fantastic.
Well digital is another story.

I was there today around 7pm. The Sanly booth is quite visible with a large poster of Pentax and the K10D.

But... there was almost nothing to see. Aside from a few K10D and K100D bodies, from what i can see, they only had the 18-55, 50-200 and the 360 and 540 flash guns. And whats more, the 360fgz was over P20K and the 540fgz was at over PhP31K!

Preposterous. Supereastasia quoted the 360fgz at only P13,990.

I was there around 1:30p mindlessly wandering. Saw a friend and "dinedemonyo" to get the D40. I was trying to find an ATM because I remembered I wanted to buy a new neckstrap.

I walked(ran?) passed the Pentax booth and heard a muffled version of my name but I thought, nah... must have been Randy or something. But actually it was Jamie guessing that it was me from the Pentax strap I had hehe.

Anyway, nice to finally meet a few members of Team PENTAX.

Of course there were no FA*s but why are they advertising the DA*s when they aren't even released yet? Plus, OVERPRICED! Everything at Sanly is OVERPRICED!

Actually, pinaalis ko muna yung friend ko who's a Nikon user hahaha. Hopefully we can organize an out-of-town shoot. Gusto nyo sa Taal volcano crater? Its one heck of an experience. : )

Hi Randal, those prices are pretty stiff! I meant those prices just change the currency symbol and that is the price here in Japan. WoW! Except for those ones you placed an asterisk on - they are quite the same in price.

If you can browse this, http://kakaku.com/itemlist/I1050105045N101/

you will have an idea - this will force Pentax user's to outsource their lens needs.

DFA 100mm f2.8 Macro @ f2.8. Super shallow DOF and dead-on accurate focus. *I removed the AF360FGZ's serial number.

At first it was all about the lenses, but after Doc Mark's speech about great things to come (of course he couldn't say anything because of NDA) and how excited he was, it only affirmed more that Pentax was and is the right choice for me. :)

Hi there Randall, do you experience any under/over focus with the 50mm f1.7 and K10D's focus confirmation? I have trouble with lenses having f-stop larger than f2.8 (i.e. I have the P-A 50mm f1.2, P-M 100mm f2.8, Tamron SP 90mm f2.5). No problems with f3.5 and above, though I am thinking of it as a DOF thing.

Hi Kenneth. I think its an Ayala thing. Years back I wanted to shoot that place between Tower 1 and the stock exchange and was stopped by their security. Never bothered to find out why but I figure that since it has been known that terrorist scout out their targets by video taping them, could lead to security being paranoid with anyone with a camera (like I don't think they can discriminate between a video camera and a still camera of any kind). :Dum:

Remember the boso gang 5 or 6 years ago where they placed small video cams in the ladies room? During that time they wouldn't allow any camera inside a mall! Like subukan mo mang boso with an SLR

Unfortunately yes. I tested it again several times under natural lighting and the problem seems to go away. AF sensor/confirmation is probably being fooled by my apartment's lighting (mixed tungsten and fluorescent - difficult white balance) hmmnnn...

ok just rough translation randall - the JPEGS are not so clear -

Pentax K10D is adjudged to be the No.1 digital SLR based on the 4 selections - K10D, KIss X (Canon 400D), Fuji S5Pro, and Nikon D200. It garnered 335 points based on the judgement of 20 camera men. It is no. 1 in several areas (1) image processor - 22-bit RAW, (2) built-in Shake Reduction, (3) weather sealing, (4) hyper-mode and sensitivity priority feature, and (5) cost vs. performance. Have to get the magazine to see the smaller print. Hope that helps.

Hi!

Its been great meeting all those Pentax users at Glorietta. Sayang lang I was not able to join the Binondo eb due to earlier appointment. Would like sana to meet the Dr. Anyway, I have posted here pictures I have taken with my Pentax Auto 110 (the world's smallest SLR) during the 1986 People Power event at EDSA.

You can view them at:

http://www.filphoto.com/thumbnails.php?album=633

Pentax 110's are fantastic little SLRs, in fact the smallest
interchangeable lens SLR with TTL metering ever made. Styled like a
very small 35 SLR, a body and three lenses can easily be held in the
palm of your hand. Many people don't believe it's a working camera
the first time they see one, mistaking the little Pentax for a toy.
They offer true SLR focusing and viewing, programmed exposure, a choice
of six different lenses, two different flashes, and a "motor-drive." On
top of that, Pentax supported them with an entire system of
accessories. So far as I know, this is the largest Sub-Miniature system
ever. Pentax really tried to do the best job they could for the tiny
camera. quality enlargements up to 11x14. Sayang nga lang, 110mm films are
rare these days.

By all means. One of the reasons why I stuck with Pentax is because you can keep hanging on to those old stuff. I had a Canon AE-1 then and nothing from my kit can even be used with the EOS ...but people are doing their best to keep their K-mounts for use with their Canons!

Good choice!

"Not available" as in they don't have stock for Pentax? I hope that's what they meant. They usually take orders for stuff like those (you make a downpayment and wait a month or so). Unless you order it abroad; Sigma4Less (http://www.sigma4less.com/sess/utn;jsessionid=15455f0e1ea541d/shopdata/product_search.shopscript?mnt=&query=sigma+17-70+pentax&Submit.x=13&Submit.y=10) lists it for $359.95.

Know anyone coming in from the US? I read in another thread that the "Surfdoc" is offering to help out get stuff from there :SunGlass:

Hope to get advice: I plan to get a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO (http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3315&navigator=6) for Pentax. Any comments and suggestions? I need an everyday carry anywhere. I feel that the sigma gives enough flexibility.

I asked jtphoto, they gave me a quote but said that its not available for Pentax. (Strains of "other equipment"...):Dum: Any ideas where else to ask?

Hi Joey,

Welcome! Looking forward to meeting you too. In fact, we are planning to go to the World Light Expo this weekend (although not yet sure). Please do join us in case it will push through.

You can give me your email and cell no. so I can make a list of Pentax users in DPP.
