Hi guys!
I just remembered that my dad owned 2 slr's when he was in his late teens and early 20's. It's a canon QL 17 model and a nikon EM. Does anyone know a reputable old camera restorer? Or is anyone familiar with this model? How much is it worth kaya today? I intend to have this camera restored and used. Hehehe. Nostalgia lang. I think they still work because when i press the shutter, the camera clicks.

hi jay!

you can go to hidalgo, quiapo and have it checked there. but be sure not to let them salvage it without you seeing what they're doing alright? heard quite a few misfortunes there.

or you can try to ask/ call canon if you want and just try if they do restorations. :) but of course it would cost a bit.

1 Malaysia Ringgit = 13.6 Philippine Peso :p

At first I wanted to sell my Mom's FM2 but it costs 6k in Hidalgo. I decided to keep it and I'm glad I did.

Jay,
I'm not sure if the Nikon EM is worth restoring. It would probably cost you more than the current value as there are better manual-focus Nikons in the secondhand market.

With the QL-17 which I'm assuming is the GIII model, check the film back for any deterioration on the light seals. Also it is quite common for the shutter to stick and not work. You can have it repaired or do it yourself by following the instructions on rangefinderforum (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8497). The instructions are pretty straightforward and this is how I resurrected mine.

Hi Jay:

I also have my Dad's EM and it's working, but its really dirty inside... full of dust and some features not working anymore (timer, exposure compensation button). I just use the 50mm f/1.8 on my DSLR now :)

Nikon EM is an example of an Aperture Priority camera, since you can't control shutter speed manually :)

After reading the procedures, I think i better have a professional look at it hehehe. :D

The QL17 retails for about P1.5 - P2.5K in hidalgo. This model has attained a cult following and presents a budget alternative to the leicas. Only downside is the battery. Very tough to find the model it uses.

Oh...and it's average retail in ebay is USD75...i'd keep it if i were you :)

I have a Canonet QL17. No batteries. Nice. :D You can have it repaired or restored at Harrison Plaza or Landmark.

I think the Canonet QL17 needs the power for its light meter. With regard to the shutter, it clicks mechanically.

Not to mention the inacurrate metering when using the QL17 with these new batteries. A workaround is changing the ISO or using a handheld meter.
