best buy for entry-level and under budget. invest in lens

go for d80 or d200 if you can shell out more.

If you're on a budget, the D50 is a very good camera.

I have a NikonD50. and I love it. It was also my 1st DSLR, had it March this year.
Don is right, invest in lens more than the body. But once you get hooked into photography, you will keep on wanting more.. hehe like me, I want a D80 now, but the price is still expensive for me, I'm saving up for it already and will wait till more models of NIkon will go out of the market so that D80's price will go down. But for now, if you're a serious hobbyist on a budget, it's practical settle for a Nikon D50 :)

@Jun

Agree with these guys! Always invest on the lens. I would even go one more step and advise you to buy the body and lens seperately. The 18-55 kit lens performs satisfactorily. But when once you see the optics of other lenses such as the cheap 50mm F1.8 (around 6K in hidalgo), you'll love it.

ok so here is the update.....

i got in the shop and then the guy told me that the D50 that is 31,500php is not available anymore, the only d50 available was 33,400php....so i got pissed....me and my friend moved to another shop...the new guy offered diff. combinations that would fit my ceiling budget.....to make the story short i ended up getting (d70s, d40 lens, 1gb sandisk ultra 2 card and kenko uv filter) for 39,750php.......is this still a goodbuy, considering that 1peso more higher my fiance will kill me........so i really can't afford the d80..

thanks for all your help

D50 is definitely a performer. Ive used it in my travel a couple of times with my D70s then and it kick butt! especially on low light.

i'll pick the D50 any day over the D40... :)

Agree with this! If you also look at the specs and the handling of D50 comparing to D40, you would find that the D50 is way superior. The D70s is quite a good model though. Although, most features and specs are the same with D50, the D70s has the '2nd command dial' which gives you better and faster control. :)

Doing a quick browse online, I stumbled upon this (http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/nikon_articles/other/manuals/manuals.html). It has lots of Nikon stuff.

If you only want a Nikon D50 manual, maybe this one's (http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/noprint/D50_en_noprint.pdf) for you :)

what are the file extensions of the said pics? are they .jpg or .nef? ".jpg" files can be opened with just any picture viewer software while ".nef" can only be opened in nikon picture project, nikon capture or adobe photoshop cs2.

Hi everyone. I'm planning to get the D50 as my first digital slr. Any suggested store to get it from? Any chance they would accept my Nikon F2 for trade-in?

The lenses nowadays are bewildering too. Can anyone direct me to a site that talks about what G lenses are, DX, VR, etc.?

If buying from the US is an option, would you recommend it?

Thank you for your inputs.

Here's Nikon's site with meanings for the letters on the lenses
Nikon Glossary (http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/lens/glossary2.htm)

I would suggest getting one Locally from Columbia, so that if anything happens you would have Local warranty.

hi sirs and maam's, i'm doing also switching to digital and came across this thread,
just wanted to get opinions; a d70s (2ndhand) body with a gig CF was being offered to me, few months used, for the same price of a d50 kit, brandnew.
what do you think? BTW i used to have an f90 and still using f80,
any opinions? thanks

Hi Arjay. Your question is quite difficult to answer as both D70s and D50 are two great cameras to choose from. Looking back, it took me several months choosing between the two. (I ended up with D50 however, using a D80 lens :)).

D70s could be better if you are heavy into studio photography (it has flash commander function that will come very handy indeed). But a D70s is heavy and bulky compared to a D50. In military weaponry, a D50 is like an M4 while a D70s is like an M16 or maybe a FAL (Fussil Automatic Legere). Then if you are like me, having no time to do much post-processing, the D50 is the better choice because it gives you the BEST jpeg photo output right of the camera. You need to master tweaking the setting to get D50-like output right out of the camera; although there are some who would not want the over-saturated results of the D50. It's really a matter of taste, I must say.

One final word I must say is that a brand new D50 gives you the peace of mind, bro !!! Unless you know the owner of that D70s, I would really feel bad if I had lead you to get the D70s but then it died out on you in just a few days/months of use. That would be a real bummer, would it not? :(

So good luck, and keep us posted But am glad you chose Nikon, though. :)

thank you for your opinions, very helpful indeed...
sirs, i will be going back to hidalgo later to check on prices of the d50, and leave my camera as someone will be checking it out..
as soon as i get the money, i will be getting a brandnew d50 as i will be much more comfortable with a brand new unit, with warranty of course. i would'nt want to have a dead camera in my hands with no one to turn to, if you know what i mean. anyway i stay away from post-processing myself; maybe its not my thing, i was earlier considering mediumformat but put it to second priority.
i want to have my pictures printed straight from the camera, and i believe the d50 is optimized for that, although i would surely miss the DOF preview and lcd light...
a d50 is akin to an m4 sopmod, with the now de rigueur vertical foregrip and red dot sight, a d80 maybe an m4 sopmod with the works plus the m203, and the d70 is, yes, the old m16a2 18 inch barrel with m203 standard issue. that makes my f90 similar to an m14, he he, and my f80 an m-16a1 with a 20rd mag, vietnam era, ha ha..maybe the old faithful Fabrique Nacional with its powerful .308 is similar to the f5, IMHO......

Arjay, very nice to know you like military stuff. Good thing I made that analogy (camera & guns). But come to think of it, both are used for "shooting" anyway. :)

Enjoy your D50 (I think it's quite difficult to find one nowadays). Save up for more lens later, and a Nikon flashgun (SB400, SB600 or SB800)

I'm planning on buying the D50 also. Soon hopefully! :D anyway, is it still advisable to go ahead and buy the camera eventhough they've discontinued it already (at least from what I read - - pls correct me if i'm wrong)?

I like this camera and prefer it over the D40 because it fits my hands well. Plus, features are generally the same anyway.

Hi Gio,

Discontinued does not mean the pics will be less pretty. If your choice is between the newer D40 and the older but more feature packed D50, I'd go for the D50. It will allow you to do more than the D40. But if you can afford a D80, then go for it.

Thats my 2 sentimoses.

why is the d50 more expensive than the d40? circuit city has the d40 @ $599 while d50 is slightly less of that... does the d50 have in camera editing? and whats its screen size and reso?

exactly what i thought :) hahaha that's why i'm more or less sold on getting the D50, eventhough there's already the D40 and D80 or even the D40x...

I was also leaned on getting the d50 over the d40 because of its size and the in-body AF motor of the d50. But after comparing the two in dpreview as well as checking kenrockwells review on the d40 I decided to get the d40 over the d50. Also price was a factor for me:Grin:

the d50 is good if your starting out wanted to get deep in photography (spend on lenses and accessories). the only thing that got me to get a d40 is its interface, screen reso, screensize, plus i really wouldnt wanna spend a huge chunk of my salary on lenses.. all i need is a 18-135mm and a sb600 (which i have no idea where id use it but im still getting it) bottom line is you really gotta know what you want before getting into the dslr world...im no pro but ive learned this the hard way

main advantages of d40 over the d50 (for me):

1. B&W function (if you want b&w straight out of cam)
2. Programmable Func Button
3. small size
4. better quality of high ISO
5. 2.5" hi-res LCD

Carlo Leonardia
03-22-2007, 03:00 PM
Main advantages of the D50 (for me)

1. AF not limited to AFS lenses
2. hard buttons for ISO, WB, and QUAL

Main advantage of D40 that I feel Aris forgot:
1. Bigger viewfinder

The high ISO advantage of the D40 is nice, but remember that the AFS lenses that go up to F2.8 will cost up to 3x what you paid for your D40. In general, for the consumer lenses, the widest opening most kit lenses will go is F3.5 at the wide end. At the tele end it gets even smaller, usually F5.6.

With a D50, even if its only up to ISO 1600 (already decent 1600), you can AF with the primes which open up to F2 or more and the constant 2.8 non AFS zooms which may fit the budget, esp if previously loved (35-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8). So the D40's IS0 3200 or the slightly better ISO performance can be made up by the ability to AF with the older lenses with wider apertures.

PJ is the model demographic for the D40... people who do not desire to buy more lenses and will be happy with the kit lens and SB. If you plan to add lenses (esp the constant aperture kind)... getting a D40 may end with an untimely body upgrade.
