I'm the first to post in this "Panasonic" thread.

I'm using Lumix FZ20.

Are there other Panasonic camera users in this forum?

Expect their SLR- the L1, to launch here around August or September. The early reviews have been excellent.

I bought my generic battery from ebay USA. I think its around $5 only ++ shipping/tax, I think the cost of shipping was more expensive. :) And then I had it brought by someone from the US whose going to the Phil.

I saw original Panasonic batteries in Ansons(appliance store), beside Park Square 2 and Ayala terminal Makati. Be ready to shell out 3K++ as they are original batteries.

Hi, im new to the forum, and possibly to panasonic as well. I'm considering getting either an FZ20 (which now retails band new in the US for about 320-340$ (BH, others) which is older but very well reviewed, OR the new FZ7 (which replaced the FZ5), which is smaller, but spec wise seems "better" than the FZ20, for about the same price (330$).

Either that or spend and get either the FZ30 or FZ50...

What do you guys think? is it worth spending the extra 200$ on the FZ30 or FZ50? While I dont need the megapixels, I do want a fast processor and acceptable low-light capability, in addition to stabilized zoom.

Also, just in case, are any of you wanting to dispose of your FZ20 or FZ5? Let me know. 0917.898.6207 or PM me.

Thanks for your advice/help on this. Hoping to joing the pana group soon.
regards-
martin

I used to have the Panasonic FZ30... it was a great camera and I would have gotten the FZ50 had it come out sooner. I fully accesssoriezed my FZ30... Got the Olympus TCON-17 and WCON-17 (Bought them at Columbia photo and Infomax), remote shutter cord, various 55mm filters, extra battery and a Vivitar Thyristor 285HV Flash head that was highly recommended for the FZ30 (Which by the way I am selling). It was a beautiful setup, but replaced it with my current camera.

The accessories, like batteries are available in Hidalgo... I just saw them yesterday. Unlucky for me, I had to get the accessories from Ebay and shipped in from the US.

Size wise, the FZ30 was pretty hefty... but the FZ5 is a good alternative, with almost the same specs. Honestly though, for the low light shots, the OIS didn't really help when handheld. I tried that one early morning, but my shots still ended up grainy and very blurry.

Hope some of my advice helps!

Good, they are now available in Hidalgo, the last time I check it wasn't available that I sourced it from ebay, then US to Phil.

Here is my response to Martin:

Hi Martin,
Just sold my Lumix FZ20 2 weeks ago. It can produce good quality pictures at right conditions. Well, for the 1 year I used it, it was really a good experience until I reached the maximum capabilities of this proconsumer camera. Let me list some of them to you.
1. It struggles in low light condition as I normally use ISO 100 for good quality.
2. Increasing ISO starting at ISO200, you can already see the noise, much more when you use ISO400.

Since you are ok buying a second hand unit, why not buy an DSLR 2nd hand unit. I know a lot of people selling their 350D. Instead of buying an FZ30, with that price, I think you can already buy a new Nikon D50 with that money.

I suggest you go directly to DSLR if you are willing to spend that much anyway. You have a lot of options when you go DSLR. With FZ20/30, your stuck with your lens and other attachable lens accessories to it.
If you want to see the shots I made with FZ20, just check my links in my signature.

Members of my family are big fans of canon and panasonic cameras.

I used to own a LUMIX DMC-LC5S but I swapped it for a Canon Powershot G5.

My dad has a FZ30, which I just dropped off at the repair center in Shaw Blvd. I hope it's nothing serious but symptoms show a CCD-related problem. Can view but can't shoot...phooey. ANYBODY ELSE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Anyway my sister also has a FZ30. She plans to upgrade to a FZ50 since she's not satisfied with the FZ30's iso. Both my dad and brother each have LX1S.

Hi! New Lumix FZ7 user here. Kinda new to photography (as a hobby) as well.

What's the best/cheapest place to get panasonic accessories (batteries/lenses/cases) here in Manila? Got my cam in HK and I haven't really seen much of the Lumix in stores here.

Thanks!

hi jeff,

welcome! i also posted the same and thanks to mr. carlo lopez, the reply was, where else, at Hidalgo St. in Quiapo.

one day i might drop by in that area because i will be looking and try to "snatch " (the place is known for this) :D a raynox m-202 super macro lens camera which i think will slash my wallet by P5k or more, i hope i have the right figure kasi sa states its around $112 tax excluded.

happy clicking with your new baby, got my fz50 in the states last november, i could have gotten the canon 400d but my focusing composition will be limited by its bulk and eye viewfinder only. i cannot afford the panasonic dmc L-1  which allows view and focus in the LCD but at a hefty price of $1,999 tax excluded. this will be my target "baby" if and i'm able to work in the states.

keep posting.

Thanks for the welcome, Victor. I wasn't really planning on getting into photography. I just wanted to replace my small Olympus P&S with the FZ7 because it was affordable enough and seemed to be a value-for-money unit. Now I find myself reading up on apertures, shutter-speeds, exposures and what-nots.. constantly looking forward to getting home to experiment and snap photos. Hopefully I can get the hang this quickly and eventually move up to your level (saw your site.. nice pics!)

Yeah I heard Hidalgo was the place to go for photography gear. Camera Mecca if you will. Are the prices really far from the retail shops at the malls?

first of all, thanks for the compliment jeff.

i don't have any concrete idea about the prices but we can rely on our friendly people here in dpp for their word, there may be some noticeable difference because if not, we would not bother to walk our ass in that area where it is known for its not so artsy snatchers and "agaw limas" characters, if you will, he he he ., otherwise we will just march to mega mall where it is safer to shop. besides others say there are ones giving 12 mos. to pay at 0% interest, i still have to confirm this myself.

fz50 is 43k+ in megamall, just boxed >>> 16mb sd card, battery & charger, cd software, usb cable, video cable, camera strap, lens hood - no camera case (US box contents)

I have been using my Panasonic FZ30 since it first came out.
I just got my 20D but I am definitely keeping my FZ30. I've used it for
butterfly photography and some birds. It is very good for daytime photography.
It has a very good lens. I bought mine from Hong Kong. I paid something like
P46K with a spare battery, an external hard disk storage mini box-40G, 2 SDK
cards. The last time I asked, they were selling it at INFOMAX for P38k without
the accessories. I'm sure it is much cheaper now. If you want to see the photos
I have taken with it, please send me an e-mail @ butterflywatcher99@yahoo.com

Newbie here, I just got my FZ50 last week from Singapore for about Php35k, came with a 2GB Kingston SD card, UV filter, extra battery, bag. I think this costs around Php32k at Hidalgo but without the additional accessories. I've been looking for conversion lenses as well, but haven't found any yet.

Lydia Robledo
12-16-2006, 03:31 PM
I think it cost me P32K in Hong Kong. That was about 2 years ago. A 40g hd storage, 2g sdk and a spare battery were added that made the price total P46k.
The FZ30 is very good for daytime photography. It works well with a tripod.
I hardly use the 4x zoom bec. the output is not satisfactory unless I'm documenting
the subject, like birds or butterflies. I think it is one of the closest p/s with a DSLR.
It is a good camera to carry around, not so heavy as the DSLR.

hi lydia, i saw ur butterflies photos it looks very sharp, did you used a conv lens for that? any tips how to get that shots?

Lydia Robledo
12-17-2006, 09:16 AM
Hi Jojo, No. I did not use a teleconverter. I don't have one. Most of them were taken upclose, in the wild, in the open, ha, not inside a butterfly house. With a point and shoot camera, of course, if you have still subjects and good light and a tripod, you get the best output. Very sharp. By the way, I seldom use the flash. Natural light is always good. I guess I have not mastered yet the capabilities of my PANA. I hate reading manuals.

Check this one. I took these photos on a rainy day. The bird was about 6 meters away. I always set on 80 to 100 ISO, if dark, hanggang 200 lang. If you set on 400, it is not sharp.

http://flickr.com/photos/butterflywatcher-philippines/sets/72157594420031023/

Book mark this site. I just started uploading. I will be posting some birds that I took which were sooo far away.

The PANA FZ30 is so versatile. With the DSLR's, I miss the LCD features- and the 20D's shutter is so noisy. I like the video, too. It comes so handy when there are interesting activities. I always take my PANA to the concerts and I am able to capture shots from my seat (CCP, PhilAM, PCI, Abelardo). I anticipate already that there will be blurred shots bec. I can't use flash and the subject is always moving, but with the triple bracketing, I am able to get satisfactory shots. Always have a spare battery and memory card.

I'd like to invite you to join the paro-parozzi yahoo group and the philippine bird photographer's group. I learn a lot from the members of the PBP. For the butterfly group, send me an e-mail at:

butterflywatcher99@yahoo.com

and for the PBP, check out the site of Romy Ocon.

www.pbase.com/liquidstone
At the top of the home page, there is an invitation.

My advocacy group is THE PHILIPPINE BUTTERFLY HABITAT CONSERVATION SOCIETY
and I have set up the butterfly gardening yahoo forum and the butterfly watcher's group (paro-parozzi). I am an active member of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines
and Philippine Bird Photographer's group.

Now for those who can afford a DSLR, the Canon 400D is well priced, invest in
a 300mm f2.8 IS. You can zoom and you can do macro without changing lens. Brand new for the cam and lens with accessories is about P135K. Now that I got
my dream camera, that's my dream lens naman. I bought 3 piggy banks yesterday. :D :-) ;) Many smiles, lydia

was a little bit disappointed this afternoon at hidalgo, quiapo....... i was looking for a macro lens for my fz50 and was not successful.... one store tried to sell me a macro lens but a ring adapter is needed to attach a 58mm diameter lens mine was 55, naturally i had to refuse it because the added ring extension may affect somehow the photo clarity from my camera - i still need to verify this but i know i had read this somewhere before, will still be looking for a fit lens..... i wasn't able to find mayer or maybe it was also closed......and advice to all, don't proceed to hidalgo on a sunday because many camera shope are closed, try to call first if they carry the stock you wanted......here's a very helpful thread posted at http://www.pinoyphotography.org/forum/index.php?topic=50.0 containing all camera shops no. and address in mm..... infomaxx at megamall sells the fz50 now at 44,500.... the last time i went there it was 43,000.... i thought they should lower price during christmas season but it was the other way around...also it was not carrying lens accessories for panasonic ... if you know someone going to singapore or u.s. and you want this model, have it brought there, i got mine from frys in long beach, ca - $705 tax inlcuded..... for the macro lens i'm particularly looking for the raynox m-202 super macro @20X magnification and maybe have someone get it in the states before the end of december..... if anyone knows a camera store carrying this lens brand kindly have it posted and many thanks for the effort......also, if anyone is interested in joining a group - a panasonic pro-sumer camera club or org where we can fully explore the capability of a near dslr camera, i think this would not be a bad idea.... anyone interested? we can have EBs and get together where we can exchange notes and ideas on using and exhausting all the capabilities of our model camera (even nearby out-of-town photo shoot trip if possible) - the panasonic line of digital pro-sumer cameras.....what are we waiting for? :)

i think its time to venture into raw image development and so i installed SILKYPIX - the panasonic fz50 bundled software for raw image processing and development. well... this is exciting as raw image format is the "digital film" equivalent to the slr negative film image. i can say that it is user friendly and may just be the right tool to expand one's know-how for a more professional looking picture.

if anyone is interested with this image format from the usual jpeg with your panasonic camera, then, go for it. just set the picture quality into RAW selection and you're on. one thing with the memory card requirement, you need to have high capacity as one shot in raw format may eat up 19 to 20MB as what i am experiencing with my unit. of course i can always revert back to jpeg selection when i need to take party shots or any event that require me to shoot more pics. by the way, i'm using a 1gb kingston sd card, i sure hope this would be enough for now with my requirements. the fz50 is also compatible with a new memory card spec in the market, the SDHC .... i have yet to find out the difference between the two.

and so after trying and toying with SILKYPIX, this may just be "the one" for me as of the moment, a tool towards the next level in digital photo processing. of course, i would also want to try adobe camera raw and have a comparison between the two. for the final image, SILKYPIX saves the processed file, what else, in jpeg format, which, can still be processed with photoshop if need be.

here goes my first try in processing a raw image file..... i hope i got it right, ... ohh well, theres always the handy "next time" :D

Hi, Panasonic users!
Here's my first attempt at night photography last weekend.
Please be gentle.. until a couple of weeks ago, my entire knowledge of photography was limited to making sure everyone was in the shot and if the flash was on.

This was doubly exciting for me since I was on a building rooftop and I've been afraid of heights since I was a kid.

people,

this on-line store is located in singapore, funny, they have a tagalog text for marketing their site..... here it is: http://www.mcgill.com.sg/shop/default.php?osCsid=ebae41ca06762fb6ccc60172a439a37 0 ........maybe some of you had seen this site already.

i did some inquiry via their e-mail form if they will accept VISA card or PayPal now as they only indicated in their site - for Philippine customers, payment via Telegraphic Transfer only (bank wire transfer with add'l cost on bank fees & service charge). i hope there will be a positive response regarding this.

i can't wait to have the raynox msn-202 super macro lens for my fz50, which i intend to purchase from them.

anyone here who already successfully transacted on-line with McGill? :)

I'll try to visit their shop on fri, and do some actual testing of this lens...Raynox is half price cheaper than the original pana lens..original conv lens cost S$250 when i check it here..

victor d. chanchico
12-20-2006, 04:56 PM
jojo,

raynox also has the msn-505 which you may also like to try, it has a higher magnification and much higher price, he he.

one sure buyer here if you would care to bring home 1 msn-202, he he he, it's around P4,500 approx. with SGD $139 if i'm not mistaken. will you be back in the phils. by january? i have exhausted time and effort even calling mayer in hidalgo but they don't carry the raynox brand, the fz50 vendor in megamall does not even carry panasonic lumix accessories. we have no source here and the price of real panasonic accessory lens is really dreadful :).

after getting that lens, we can organize a shoot somewhere to test its real capability. i don't want to go on a first real location for now because i feel the lack of right accessory, it would just bother me somewhere, thinking that if only i would have the right lens, etc., etc. i would have gotten it better....so and so.....u know what i mean :)

anyway, happy testing.

Hello Victor,

Saw your photos at your site. Love them. Really tempted to get FZ-50 instead of D40. But i'm only starting on photography and D40 I understand is more forgiving, i.e. give better pix even in low-light. Will be looking forward to more of your pix.

hi mira,

your comment is very very heart-warming and may i say that photography is my form of expression besides guitar music and i'm really hooked on it (have to lessen my time with my guitar for this one, there's a trade-off you know)) but comes with it is a struggle to better yourself everytime. so is the time when people like you appreciate my form of expression, there is too much much pressure, he he he  .

Not really, i should reverse that thinking, the secret is to really really enjoy this hobby and let the creative juices do the working for me. as for you, i hope you get what "pana" (as in indian pana used for shooting enemies) you really need - "pana"sonic, he he - plugging (i should be paid for this, kidding). no, follow you heart's desire and what's healthy for your "bulsa", with the d40 you will find yourself needing a variety of lenses and lenses after lenses, you know what i mean, this will be taxing, ok lang kung malalim ang bulsa.

as for me, the fz50 answers all my needs for now, i might have brought a true dslr with the money i spent with, but, taking cue from above, i restrained myself. my unit really answers for many shooting situations that i'm very very glad with my acquisition.

someday, i will move to the true dslr level and might want to have the panasonic dmc l-1, which along with the olympus evolt 330 features an lcd viewfinder - the only ones in the market which i really really need. (panasonic, sobra na plugging and loyalty ito, he he, can i test your l-1 when it comes to the philippines or make hulugan the unit after testing, he he he).

goodluck and enjoy photography mira, you can also join our panasonic group here later if you're interested or some EB and out-of-town shoots.

Happy New Year to all Panasonic users and DPP members, have a prosperous one....

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/151/341811180_e17c588d81_b.jpg

the panasonic's achilles heel is really it's low light shooting output, the noise is there but the silkypix raw developer answers for it, also, try adjusting as per manual - noise reduction set to high and other settings such as saturation, etc. to low as seen below:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/141/325771512_9e00019c0c.jpg

this was jpeg format, if it were in raw, the silkypix would have fixed it readily.

the LCD viewfinder is most useful when shooting on ground level, one may just set the timer, i.e. 2secs, place camera on ground, set focus and other adjustments and you're set to click, making it possible to have this one.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/143/341839638_375233978a.jpg

with a DSLR you will need specialized tri-pod for this ground level shot and maybe other add-ons, if i'm not
mistaken, that's why it would be useful for dlsr users to have a back-up pro-sumer if possible to easily get
going and avoid long set-up time.

fellow panasonic users, i was able to order and pay via paypal a raynox dcr-250 macro lens with www.mcgill.com.sg (http://www.mcgill.com.sg) cost was S$125 including shipping, approx. P4,000. i was originally looking for the msn-202 super macro lens but it seems it's higher magnification is not a requirement for me right now and there may be issues of vignetting if this is true in this model.

shipment is jan. 10 and hoping that there will be no customs duty tax or any add-on to the final cost. shipment is via registered post office mail.

so this is a good news for those panasonic users looking for additional lense accessories, we now have a cheap source.

try it :) .

hey there.... didn't notice that this thread is populated na pala. per my previous post, still have my trusty fz20 with me although it's relegated to my daughter.
some tips??? well i would say keep the iso to at 100 and if in low light, up to 200 only.
i also bought the pana flash and it does work wonders.... if you can't find the oem, a good replacement would be the sunpak 383.. i think i'ts still available at infomax park square1.
have lots of reasons why i went for a d200 after exactly a year of use but its more like i've outgrown its potential already. i do miss the superb lens and not having to clean the sensor. battery life was really a pain for me as well as its startup time and electronic viewfinder lag esp. for fast-moving objects like birds and cars. the 5mp images come out well but limited up to at least 12x15 only. beyond that pixellation becomes apparent. if only the sensor matched well with the lens!!!
with the entry of the nikon d40 at P32-35k..... its kinda tough. but then.....
that only comes with an 18-55 lens (equivalent to 27-82mm) as opposed to the image stabilized macro-capable 35-420mm for the fz's.
the closest the nikon would come close to such is mating the d40 with the 18-200vr (eq. 27-300) and that's still 120mm short. that would still equate to P72-75k total. the fz's are at about the P35-40k range if i'm not mistaken.
then again, with the d40 you get high iso, immediate startup, optical viewfinder, larger 6mp sensor and the possible growth into the "nikon" system.
in parting, i have my d200 yet am still hanging on to my fz20 for those occassion when i want to lug along something light, compact yet powerful.

hi manny,

yupp, same here, my panasonic fz50 would still be a powerful back-up unit if ever i move to the true dslr camera someday, my choice for a dslr then would be for the more ambitious and ever brand loyal to panasonic's dmc-L1 or nikon d80 type unit.

Yeah. For casual hobbyists like me, superzooms like our panasonics are a better option. It'd be far too expensive to go dslr right away with more or less the same capabilities.

Anyway, here's my obligatory moonshot from two days ago.
handheld lang, because the clouds were moving in fast! didn't have time to setup a tripod. :)

Good day everyone,

Not yet a Panasonic user, but hoping to be one pretty soon:Grin:

My Canon A80 went south a few days ago thus I've been looking at the reviews of the z30 online.
Since my camera would be coming from the states, I find it diffucult to locate an online merchant for the z30 and was wondering if the z8 would suffice.
Would choosing the z30 over the z8 would matter a great deal "if" I do get into the hobby of d.photography in the future?
Any advantages of the z30 over the z8?

Not yet really a hobbyist, but merely a casual photo taker.....but hoping my investment would kick start something more interesting in the future:)

thanks victor. enjoy ako dahil ang liit. now i can leave my very bulky, very heavy dslr. actually bought this for the movie mode, so that we can capture every moment anytime, anywhere without having to bring a dslr, and of course for the picture quality.

actually the fz50 is one of the bulkiest pro-sumer cams in the market. but hey, anything smaller than this compromises the comfort in holding a camera.

plus features like image stabilization, dslr-like function keys and dials, swivel lcd, non-extending lens, full manual focusing and zooming mode (not auto-zoom), movie functions, 16:9 / 4:3 /3:2 aspect ratio, 35-420mm 2.8 LEICA LENS, flash hot-shoe (compatible with all my olympus TTL flashes), and etc.

and it has only been 14 hours since i got this camera. let's see how it performs in the real world.

OT: I just would like to commend the people from Panasonic service center in shaw blvd. They got my Panasonic GS250 up and running in just a few hours. Excellent service pa. Nice people to deal with.

Panasonic iloilo (naces) are the worst though... I waited for 3 months just to have the spare part ordered!!! I got sick of them kaya I brought it to Manila. If you're from iloilo and planning to get a panasonic...dont!!! unless Panasonic Iloilo (naces) gets their act together.

FZ50 user here! XD
got it last October 2006..One year na mahigit..XD
gift from my Dad..he bought it from HK..
got the basic package..
can;t afford pa to buy for myself..
still a student..

btw, here are my temporary portfolio websites

http://ivanroman09.multiply.com/photos
http://brassdemeur.deviantart.com (http://brassdemeur.deviantart.com/)

Visit my site para makita ang mga napagdaanan na namen together ng FZ50 ko..XD
Pasenxa na sa ibang albums sa site..still working on a Website strictly for my portfolio only.
XD

Have used my FZ for all seasons, all around ang FZ sobra!! XD eheheh! even used to produce Music Videos, A Short FIlm and A documentary Film. Panalo ang FZ pagdating sa Motion Film dahil sa DOF nito. Other DigiVidCams doesn't have the DOF feature. Stand-out ang Cinematography ng FZ among other Personal DigiVidCams!!!

comment on my FZ:
One thing I really love about my FZ is the LEICA Lens btw! XD
hanep sa telephoto mode, where during school events, i just stand from a clear view 5-6 meters from the stage and still can get a close-up portrait of the MC habang ung ibang photographers eh nandun sa front row. XD

The only sad thing lang naman about my FZ is,
hirap sa low-light..even indoors..hanggang ISO 200 alng nagagamit ko..
coz, if i used higher than 200..the image will be eaten up by too much noise grains..

Lastly, would someone help me find conversion lenses for my FZ?

I had this wishlist last summer before my birthday..in this list were 3 conversion lenses..
http://ivanroman09.multiply.com/photos/album/33/Wishlist
sadly, i wasn't able to find a shop selling these items.
Walang iba kundi through online shopping.

I agree about the zoom! You can get something like this:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6693287

(OT: Paano ba mag-post ng image na hindi naka-thumbnail?) See thumbnail down there...

Nakakabitin lang nga yung 35mm...kulang para sa panoramic shots...

Regarding the other optionals, I think only Panasonic sells them at the moment. When I asked for a spare battery at Henry's where I bought mine, wala rin silang stock...

I myself am looking for an external flash and the wide angle converter. Maybe some of us fz50 users can get together and make a bulk purchase?:D Just a thought (wild one at that...)

actually, balak ko sana..magpabili nga sa mga nabili online..

Im a recent convert to GX1 (less than a week). I am in love with this cam. Definitely a huge weight loss compared to my D5000
