ryanhayudini 09-13-2009, 11:47 AM So release time is nearing!
"Video
Like my Olympus E-P1 review, I really don’t know how to shoot video well, so all I can say is that the AF works wonderfully (and silently, even with the kit lens) and is a big relief over manual focus-only or pre-focus-only options from most other cameras."
Yahoo!!!
The iso performance looks good too! Argghhh... technology is really improving fast! Nikon where's yours!
daniel go 09-14-2009, 11:05 AM David, based on the very short time you played with it. What's your initial verdict? EP-1 or GF-1 ? :)
David Tong 09-14-2009, 12:41 PM Got this from dpreview forum thread discussion, not sure if they're talking about the E-P1 or GF1
Amateur Photographer UK Review/Test

daniel go 09-17-2009, 02:08 PM Ryan, It's ok, I rarely if ever use a flash :)
Jay2Cenon_Tarun 09-17-2009, 03:29 PM I heart the all black :)
Me too, me too!

laurenmalcampo 09-17-2009, 06:12 PM Same price as a D90 body if converted to pesoses
ryan, you're paying for miniaturization :D
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2009, 11:49 AM Just a bit curious... does the GF1 have a mechanical shutter? is the shutter response as fast as DSLRs?
Just read in dpreview that Novoflex now has adapters for the micro-4/3 mount so we can mount our favorite Nikon, Canon, and other name it lenses... :D
daniel go 09-18-2009, 11:59 AM David, it is out in Singapore already?
David Tong 09-18-2009, 12:01 PM Daniel: No it's not available yet.
Carlo: Shutter and focus lag is very minimal, quite the same as most entry level DSLR, there's no mechanical shutter.
ErnztMadamba 09-23-2009, 03:37 PM I wish to get one but its Too expensive for me.
Ronald Suello 09-23-2009, 05:05 PM cute toy!!!

carlo_mendoza 09-30-2009, 02:24 PM it's out... Infomax Megamall sells it for 47k with 14-45 kit lens

carlo_mendoza 10-01-2009, 10:16 AM To the gurus: Is it a worthy replacement for a DSLR? image quality, speed, etc.
Waiting for the gurus' replies...
daniel go 10-01-2009, 02:00 PM Speed - It won't be and will never be as fast as a dslr. Remember, it uses the slower contrast based AF system compared to the almost instantaneous phase detection based AF system of a dslr. Image Quality in lower to mid level ISO will be /might be comparable. Size wise - it is much smaller and portable.
sherwindy 10-01-2009, 04:12 PM for work, this or the EP1 still won't replace the DSLR, but for travel this is PERFECT
daniel go 10-02-2009, 07:07 PM My wife and kids surprised me with an super early bday gift :D

jettorres 10-02-2009, 07:23 PM wow! congratulations! happy birthday! hope you can post a review.
daniel go 10-02-2009, 08:36 PM Jet, thanks, my birthday is still almost a month away :) I haven't had a chance to shoot with it yet. Battery is still charging. One thing is sure, I wish I had a faster lens so I am saving up for the pancake lens. I keep wanting to bring this thing up to my eye level, I haven't used a dslr for a long time but played with film cams all these time and find it really wierd to be shooting something that allows me to twist the lens without peering through a view finder. The built is quite solid in my hands. So I guess that's all for now, I'll post more once I actually get to shoot with it :)
laurenmalcampo 10-02-2009, 08:36 PM @daniel, very nice surprise!! congrats and advance happy birthday!! :)
David Tong 10-02-2009, 10:28 PM Dan: HAHAH "SURPRISE" daw o! :P :P
I'm sure you've been dropping hints and all :D
Nice nice nice... can't wait for your pics... please do provide your feedback/review as well.
daniel go 10-03-2009, 11:01 AM Lauren, Thanks :)
David, Surprise yan, syempre she asked me what I want and saw me looking up the GF-1 reviews and asked me if I want one, I said yes, and she told me to go out and get one if available na daw. Gift daw nila ng mga anak ko for me. Dang I knew I should have been looking at a D300s or 7D hahahahaha. I leave the reviews to you man, since I am sure sooner rather than later you will be holding one yourself. BTW please pm me if the 20mm f/1.7 is available there already :)
Some non artistic test shots. bad weather outside so no chance to shoot much. Pasencya na po. Shots ranges from ISO 400 -ISO 800, all done with the 14-45mm kit lens and no post processing to show how images look out of the camera.

David Tong 10-04-2009, 12:02 AM So, how do you like it so far? :D
daniel go 10-04-2009, 05:38 PM David, obvious ba? hahahaha, I love it. But I can say it is not a complete dslr replacement, nt unless they come out with fast lenses for it and can match the speed and HIGH ISO cleaness of a dslr but it is a very very good alternative for those who want dslr quality image but not the dslr bulk :)

David Tong 10-04-2009, 07:24 PM Nothing an NR software can't handle, though. I think the noise is pretty respectable as it's still a standard 4/3 sensor, and not that far off from entry level DSLRs...
Time to buy an adapter so you can use your Voigtlander lenses on it :)
daniel go 10-04-2009, 10:08 PM David, my next "Save up for" target is the pancake first then a M mount adapter and maybe go for the Voitlander 50mm f/1.1
David Tong 10-04-2009, 10:40 PM Screw the "maybe" part :D
daniel go 10-05-2009, 07:10 AM Screw the "maybe" part :D
Dsvid, hahaha you know me so well but I am still saving up for a "proper" dslr next year so the maybe part remains true and accurate. This year has just been a crazy expensive year what with our family's medical sitation and all that is why I feel so blessed my wife would give me this :)

carlo_mendoza 10-05-2009, 01:47 PM Wow congratulations sir daniel. I actually had cash on my pocket that i was supposed to deposit to my account when i saw the unit at infomax... temptation didn't beat me though :)

daniel go 10-05-2009, 06:11 PM Carlo, Thanks!! Please drop the sir :)
Victor Nacion 10-05-2009, 10:44 PM Guys, any idea how much would this GF1 cost? I would think that the 20mm pancake lens is more suited to the GF1 in terms of size proportions. :)
ryanhayudini 10-06-2009, 12:12 AM Daniel - Any video clips? I just want to see the vid quality.
P47T at infomax? So this might be cheaper once it hits hidalgo
carlo_mendoza 10-06-2009, 09:09 AM Carlo, Thanks!! Please drop the sir :)
Looking forward to another round of marvelous photos! Does this mean we will miss you in the LX3 thread? :(
daniel go 10-06-2009, 09:46 AM Victor, Infomax sells it for 47K but I was able to get it from then for 45K plus some freebies. :)
Ryan, Try ko lang, I rarely shoot videos kasi :)

laurenmalcampo 10-06-2009, 01:31 PM i'm looking forward to see sample shots of the 20mm(?) pancake!!
carlo_mendoza 10-06-2009, 01:36 PM my boss actually has one (20/1.7)... crazy bokeh! a world apart from the 14-45 IMO in terms of bokeh and sharpness :) im just not sure if i can borrow his shots haha
randytamayo 10-06-2009, 01:43 PM The Panasonic will launch here in Melbourne on 08 Oct. The GF1 with the 20 f/1.7 Pancake will go for around 1400AUD++ (around 57KPhp.)
carlo_mendoza 10-06-2009, 01:54 PM HK prices:
GF1 kit = HK$7500 (14-45 or 20/1.7)
14-45 = HK$3000
20/1.7 = HK$4000

The 20mm is wicked!
ryanhayudini 10-06-2009, 05:00 PM I have funds for a second D90 body but I am curious on this little thing. If the video capabilities is better than that of the D90 then I might have a reason to get it :-> (sooo please give me a reason! hehehe)

holy cow! that's one sweet lens!
daniel go 10-06-2009, 10:38 PM Lauren, Know what? if you buy a M4/3s unit you can buy an optional M (Leica mount) Mount lens adapter and use any Leica M mount lens with the unit, Manual focusing only though. There is a yummy Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1 lens you can buy for around 40K. with that lens your camera can see at night hahaha :)
randytamayo 10-07-2009, 07:56 AM @daniel, almost all camera gear here are expensive. to put it into more perspective:
5DMkII = 3900AUD or 161KPhp
70-200L 2.8 IS = 2700AUD or 111KPhp
70-200L 4.0 = 1100AUD or 45KPhp
70-200L 4.0 IS = 1800AUD or 74KPhp
580EXII = 667AUD or 27KPhp
daniel go 10-07-2009, 08:04 AM Randy, Oh my gulay!! And here I was thinking of calling up my wife's cousin in Perth to check out the 20mm for me. :( Thanks for the heads up.

CocoyLopez 10-07-2009, 08:22 AM Nice images, Daniel. Back in the LX3, I tried avoiding that thread and here comes another one to avoid! :)
Congrats and continue to post more. Christmas is around the corner anyway. :)
laurenmalcampo 10-07-2009, 10:05 AM Lauren, Know what? if you buy a M4/3s unit you can buy an optional M (Leica mount) Mount lens adapter and use any Leica M mount lens with the unit, Manual focusing only though. There is a yummy Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1 lens you can buy for around 40K. with that lens your camera can see at night hahaha :)
nice! thanks for the tip, Daniel! i don't really mind manual focusing... in fact i do it a lot with my cz 100 f2 on the d700. of course, the viewfinder of the d700 is big and bright but the GF1 has an even bigger LCD liveview so hmmmm... :)
bingpena 10-07-2009, 10:08 AM demonyong thread to! (trans: daniel is eveeel!) :D
ryanhayudini 10-07-2009, 10:50 AM nice! thanks for the tip, Daniel! i don't really mind manual focusing... in fact i do it a lot with my cz 100 f2 on the d700. of course, the viewfinder of the d700 is big and bright but the GF1 has an even bigger LCD liveview so hmmmm... :)
Buy one then let me try it out Lauren
daniel go 10-07-2009, 07:21 PM Cocoy, Buy one already bro. I just heard that Infomax will be bringing it new units but... ( big BUT) they must have gotten over the post-Ondoy charitable stage coz the new units are rumoured to cost around P57,500.. Yikes!! They might justify it if the kit comes with the 20mm pancake lens.
Lauren, I hope to save up for the adapter and CV Nokton 50mm f/1.1 after I save up for the 20mm first :)
Bing, Mea culpa, mea culpa hahaha :D
Ryan, bili na :D
Clemn A. Macasiano, Jr. 10-08-2009, 01:08 AM @ Daniel ... How's the macro function compare to LX-3 and the focusing speed ?
daniel go 10-08-2009, 08:48 AM Doc Clemm, The macro for the GF-1 is dependent on the lens so right now the LX3 will whip the GF-1 in terms of macro. As for overall speed, well the LX3 is fast for a P&S and the GF-1 is almost as fast as a entry to mid level dslr so GF-1 is a bit faster here. For focusing speed slight edge to the GF-1 also :)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2608/3991763620_5012a5f7ab.jpg
David Tong 10-08-2009, 08:49 AM You'd have to consider the lenses for AF speed as well. The kit lens of the GF1 is much slower than the fixed lens on the LX3, if you stash the 20mm (or other wide aperture lens) on the GF1, the AF improves even more.
laurenmalcampo 10-08-2009, 08:51 AM hey Daniel, just curious, do you shoot in b/w or color then convert to b/w? your b/w shots are truly inspiring btw :)
daniel go 10-08-2009, 09:02 AM Lauren, Nope, straight B/W . One of the reason why I went with Panasonic was because I love the LX3's dynamic b/w which is carried over to the GF-1. The Gf-1 even added a vintage looking subtle sepia tinted monochrome mode. Thanks Lauren!!! Me, I am envious of your D700 shots :)
David Tong 10-08-2009, 09:18 AM Daniel: Set the cam to ISO 800 for B&W... The chroma noise is wonderful.
daniel go 10-08-2009, 09:44 AM David, that was ISO 800 :) I need to shoot it in lower light :)
David Tong 10-08-2009, 10:02 AM No, I mean ISO 800 even in bright daylight....
Walter Yalung 10-08-2009, 10:26 AM Nice BIRTHDAY GF1T idol Dan! :)
daniel go 10-08-2009, 10:54 AM David, it was shot in a slightly cloudy condition @ ISO 800 :)

Thanks! Would like to see how the video hold up to those DSLRs. BTW, the sensor doesn't overheat like that of dslrs? When using video I mean.

@ John .. where did you get one in hkg ?
Clemn A. Macasiano, Jr. 10-08-2009, 08:05 PM Doc Clemm, The macro for the GF-1 is dependent on the lens so right now the LX3 will whip the GF-1 in terms of macro. daniel go 10-10-2009, 10:38 AM I want to but from the reviews I've read, it's low res lcd makes it a bit difficult to check focus if you use MF a lot plus the fact that it is expensive so I think I'll take a pass for the EVF :)

carlo_mendoza 10-14-2009, 10:56 AM Lauren, according to dpreview, closest focusing distance is 20cm/0.66 ft. Our LX3s wins in the macro category with 1cm closest focusing distance :)

OMG! granted it's a Leica, it's more expensive than a nikkor FF macro lens!!
daniel go 10-14-2009, 09:20 PM Some people are dismissing the 14-45mm kit lens out right when in fact in places with ample light it works very well plus the fact that it has a more versatile focal length than the pancake makes it very nice for a daytime walkabout lens.
This one was shot late afternoon in gloomy weather jut before it started raining yesterday.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2502/4009377459_1d68f3f9e3.jpg
BTW for those who have the Panasonic wide angle lens for the LX3, youcan use it with the pancake lens as it also has a 46mm filter thread size. It will give you a 30mm focal length in 35mm terms.
john_villavicencio 10-14-2009, 09:44 PM just got the pancake lens at a much cheaper price.
trying it out with an sb800 connected via PW Plus II's and it's working like a charm.

daniel go 10-14-2009, 11:10 PM Read up guys, DPR's review is out - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/PanasonicGF1/
The last part of the conclusion says " Overall though - and I guess you probably already know this - I really loved the GF1, and will find it very hard to return it when this review is finished, meaning that I may have to wipe the dust and cobwebs off my wallet and actually hand over my own hard earned cash for one. The Olympus E-P1 now has some very, very strong competition in the form of possibly the most engaging and enjoyable camera on the market today. A compromise, for sure, but a surprisingly happy one."
Just like what Digital Camera Resource Page ( http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_gf1-review) said, "It's safe to say that you can't get a better endorsement than having a reviewer buying the camera they are writing about." nuff' said :)
bingpena 10-15-2009, 12:07 AM @daniel
and you say you're not a pimp… pure EVIL… E.V.I.L. pimp (pun intended) :D
David Tong 10-15-2009, 12:32 AM Told you guys it's worth the wait ;)
I'm sure die-hard E-P1 fanboys will still not accept statements like these:
Focus speed is determined by a combination of the performance of both camera and lens, and the GF1 is fastest when used with one of the two kit lenses Panasonic currently sells for its Micro Four Thirds system (the 14-45 and 14-140mm); with the 20mm F1.7 it's a touch slower (there's a lot more glass to move). That said, comparing the GF1 with the 20mm to the E-P1 with the 17mm pancake is like chalk and cheese; the Panasonic combo feels easily twice as fast.
On average it takes around 0.25 seconds to focus with the 14-45mm zoom (compare this to the Olympus E-P1, which can take up to four times longer).
laurenmalcampo 10-15-2009, 08:05 AM i expect the GF1 will be another hit for Panasonic :)
@Daniel, i, for one, am more interested in the pancake prime because i want a really compact package... a camera that i can easily slip inside my bag like the LX3. would you believe that i hardly use the zoom of the LX3! i tend to use zoom lenses only at both ends - go figure! hehe! :D
daniel go 10-15-2009, 08:27 AM Bing, That's the role reserved solely for David :D
David, I am sure!!! hahaha I am hoping that when Panasonic comes out with a firmware update for the GF-1, it will correct some of the minor niggles like the JPEG renderings of Blue and Green but honestly I don't see anything wrong with it :)
Lauren, haha I think we both use the LX3 the same way :)

David Tong 10-15-2009, 08:49 AM Panasonic JPEGs have long been pretty inconsistent regardless of product line. I noticed this since the FZ3 that I used quite a bit before. However, you can tweak it enough via parameters to get it right, but I'm a RAW shooter for the most part which pretty much negates the JPEG processing issue of most cameras.
ryanhayudini 10-15-2009, 08:49 PM Oh man, looks like its time to save up for this. A good vid. quality would be icing on the cake! Any vid samples here?

guys, DSLR or GF1 really depends on your budget and preference. check out the review at dpreview... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/PanasonicGF1/page33.asp
The market for a camera like the GF1 falls into three broad groups; those wanting a better quality alternative to a high end compact (such as the Canon G10), those wanting a more portable alternative to an entry-level SLR and those bitten so hard by the camera bug that they want something to fill the gap between their compact and SLR systems. Of the three it's the latter who will be most satisfied by the GF1, since they understand completely the compromises faced by anyone in the other two groups; the GF1 is larger and more expensive than any compact, and it can't match the speed or feature set of a similarly-priced SLR.

laurenmalcampo 10-22-2009, 06:13 PM dpreview has posted their review of the panasonic leica 45mm macro lens...
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/panasonic_45_2p8_o20/
We were mightily impressed by Panasonic's 20mm F1.7 ASPH, which delivers excellent image quality and a large aperture in a miniature package, and seems to have become an instant cult classic. Unfortunately though, we can't summon up quite the same enthusiasm for the 45mm F2.8 macro. It's not a bad lens in any way (in fact it's a very good macro), just one which doesn't seem (to us at least) to offer a sufficiently compelling blend of features to fully justify the significant price tag.
Nikko Lim 10-22-2009, 08:32 PM GF-1 right now is HK$7800 in HK. This comes with 14-45mm or the 20mm lens, and 4GB memory card.
Still thinking If I should get one. Hmm..
David Tong 10-22-2009, 10:00 PM Lauren: But I'm sure a lot will be willing to look over the facts just to get a "Leica" hehe...

andrewong 10-24-2009, 12:02 AM Since the GF1 is already been released, shouldn't the thread be renamed? just wondering
David Tong 10-24-2009, 01:17 AM No as the thread's main topic is still the link to my preview article. Besides, what's the big deal? There isn't another GF1 thread to confuse the discussion anyway.
laurenmalcampo 10-24-2009, 08:06 AM Lauren, How about you? hehehe :)
still sitting on the fence right now :) i'm kind of leaning towards an aps-c sensor compact but still waiting to see a review and more samples.
daniel go 10-24-2009, 08:16 AM Lauren, As of the moment the only other APS-C sized compacts are the Sigma branded models (DP1, DP2). You planning to get one? :)
David, nyek! hahaha I am saving up for a 7-14mm :)

laurenmalcampo 10-24-2009, 08:31 AM @Daniel, no not the sigmas. but the GF1 is in my shortlist. a 7-14mm?? that's 14-28mm EFL right? nice! will be watching out for your samples :)
daniel go 10-24-2009, 09:37 AM Lauren, yup 14-28mm :) The LX3 has developed my taste for wide lenses :)
laurenmalcampo 10-24-2009, 11:15 AM holy cow! that UWA costs around USD1100.00!
smaller definitely ain't cheaper :)
daniel go 10-24-2009, 11:45 AM Lauren, you got that right! But it's a great lens :)
Nikko Lim 10-30-2009, 10:42 AM which is the better lens for the GF1, if you will just be getting and using one.. 20mm or the 14-55mm..
daniel go 10-30-2009, 11:59 AM Nikko, Depends on what your shooting style is. If it's low light and street then 20mm is the lens to get. The 14-45mm is the more versatile among the 2 for its focal length but the 20mm is universally acclaimed as the current must have lens for the m4/3s system :)

Thanks ...
daniel go 11-02-2009, 09:37 PM Doc, Clem, the maximum long shutter exposure for the GF-1 is 4 minutes in Bulb mode and I don't think it has the multiexposure function of the LX3 ( i could be wrong though- I need to check the manual for this ) :)

dan de jesus 11-08-2009, 11:48 PM Calling all expert...Yes, that's you David and Daniel :)... can you please please help me on my GF1 problem? I got a Voightlander M4/3 adaptor to be used for Leica M lens on GF1, a guy from Tin Cheung told me that this is better than Panasonic. I believed him without testing it. My fault...:(
Here is my problem, all my M lenses cannot be used on GF1, every time i will try to use the lens, it will give me a message of "Please check that the lens is properly inserted". I tried so many times but still the same message. Even my 15mm Voightlander is not working. Please help! TIA.
daniel go 11-09-2009, 08:37 AM Dan, Go to your menu, under the 5th page of the custom menu there is an option for "shoot without lens" choose that to be able to shoot using legacy lenses :)

dan de jesus 11-09-2009, 04:11 PM Daniel, I already tried that yesterday turning "ON" the "Shoot without Lens" but still my legacy lenses cannot be used..:) Any other solution? Thanks.
daniel go 11-10-2009, 09:47 AM Dan, Baka yun lens mismo hindi compatible. Are you shooting in P or TV mode? I heard that legacy lens will only work with AV or M mode.

Clemn A. Macasiano, Jr. 12-19-2009, 09:03 PM I played with Leica 45mm/2.8 Macro and 7-14mm UW. Wow ! I'm in love with the 45mm Macro .. Fast focusing speed for a Macro and sharp while 7-14mm .... I having doubts .... I find it soft. But I love the focal length.
David Tong 12-19-2009, 10:20 PM Lovin' the orbs! :D
Clemn: The 45 2,8 has been getting rather poor reviews (especially for the price) and IIRC, the Panasonic rep told me that it only has focus-by-wire, which is a strange option for a precise MF-required lens.. How well are the output for you?

David,
Sorry for the delayed response. Yes loving the orbs.(7-14). I definitely getting it, but keep it on hold due to my contemplation between TSE-17 mm and EF14 mm II. Plus the rumor of canon 14-24. He he he.
But the 20 mm pancake is a keeper.
With regards to 45 2.8 Macro. I can't comment technically but I find the focusing is fast and sharp.
Thanks,
drboymac
