View Full Version : Canon S3 IS vs Sony DCS-H2
Melvin Medes 12-01-2006, 10:51 PM I am planning to buy a camera (next year, ) and my target is the Canon s3 IS for its highly recommended ratings across the net. However, I've read that Sony DSC-H2 is a strong contender, most especially in terms of image quality. And so, i am considering the latter too. Other cameras you can suggest are also welcome, but my eyes are on these two. I am more particular with the image output of the camera. And the price of course.
What I like in s3 IS (accdng to most reviews):
*Slate-grey finish:D
*Clean images
*fun to use
*its canon (:D :D lol)
What I like in H2 (again, according to most reviews):
*Has better image quality
*has better, higher ISO output
*uses only 2 AA
Hope you can give pieces of advice which can guide me as to what camera to choose.
Thank you in advance!
maris lim 12-01-2006, 11:27 PM this is my dilemma too. i've asked around and these two have the same price in hidalgo, so i'm pretty torn. although, i'm kinda leaning towards the s3 is because a lot more people are using it...
but i guess it'll come to the point where i'll just get whichever camera is available in hidalgo when i go to buy one. when i asked in mayer last week the s3 is was out of stock and the sales person was persuading me to buy the h2 instead. (i didn't have the budget to buy one yet at that time.)

yes they also got lens adapter for wide and telephoto lenses, just like s3 IS:)
Its really hard to choose.
raymondgayondato 12-02-2006, 06:20 AM im an S3 IS user but i find the 3" LCD of the H5 appealing.
not quite sure though with regards to low-light shots of H2, but i admit that its one of the weaknesses of S3 IS. H2 has ISO up to 1000, and shutter speed upto 30seconds, as per compared to S3 IS that only has up to 15 seconds and ISO upto 800 (but very noisy)
still, im happy with my S3 IS. :)

For the Sony H2, the converter comes with the camera while for Canon S3, you will have to buy it separately.
On the side, prior to the acquisition of my SLR middle of this year, I was also contemplating in buying a point and shoot. Back then, my dilemma was between an S2 and H1. Even with those lower models, the decision was already tough. Updates have been made (in fact there is H5 for Sony which you will also have to consider) so much so decision is even tougher now.
Both are really good cameras, then and now. The way I see it, it will really boil down to your personal preferences. I highly suggest that you go the shop and feel it, touch it and click it. Chances are, you will be able to decide.
The nice side about this is that whatever decision you make, for sure, you will be bringing home a very good camera.

raymondgayondato 12-04-2006, 05:47 AM @melvin - if your budget permits, why not go with the D40 kit for 32k? atleast its a dslr.. ;)
i remember me purchasing my S3IS last september. the camera, bag, charger, batteries and tripod + the 6% surcharge from my credit card cost me roughly 30k. :s
if only i have waited a couple more months.. hehehe.. though im not regretting my purchase kasi the pictures i took for the past months -- priceless. :)

raymondgayondato 12-05-2006, 01:23 AM @melvin, dont get me wrong. but all cameras any make model or type produces priceless images. it may not be award winning, but the essence that youve photographed something rather that having no camera at all during these times.
thats priceless.
Melvin Medes 12-07-2006, 12:00 AM raymond: i strongly agree with you. :D
