View Full Version : Smoke Photography
Parc_Cruz 12-14-2006, 01:54 PM Ever since I started photography, I've been trying to play around with this. I think this is my fourth set and fourth attempt in creating the Art of Smoke. I normally do this when I have nothing to shoot or my mind is playing or I am bored.
Today I thought I would do something different to my usual approach with photographing and post processing smoke as an art subject.
I ended up shooting around 150 and because I was aiming for a certain texture and shape, only 10 of these passed. Also, a pack of cigarettes was consumed in just a matter of an hour and a half. I smelled like an ashtray.
WARNING: CIGARETTE SMOKING IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

jerrytieng 12-14-2006, 02:57 PM Putscha (translation: damn!) yan ang art! (translation: artsy!) :D
Question, how high does the smoke need to rise before it looses it's smooth curves and become a photographically-useless mess?
May God bless your lungs my friend.

Dys Santos 12-14-2006, 03:04 PM You can also try gunpowder or sulphur. Try different powders for different colors.

SET UP/PP
You will need source of smoke - cigarette, incense
1. Dark Background. I used a black cloth.
2. Lights should come from the side. I used my Canon 550 EX with ST-E2 trigger. If you have Nikon, use whatever is equivalent. You dont' need the ST-E2 anymore. :)
3. Set exposure. My setting was f/5.6 shutter speed 60 ISO 100/800 but I play around with it, it's just the basic set-up
4. Pre-focus (manually)
5. Shooooooooot away. It's hard to get the best image, trust me. Smoke's a difficult model!!!
Then:
1. On photoshop - invert image so that background becomes white (from black)
2. Adjust colors using hue, saturation, etc. Adjust levels for hightlights
3. A little dodge and burn helps
4. Unsharp mask
5. Gaussian Blur for the glow, but it depends on the shape
6. Experiment!!!
Enjoy!

David Tong 12-17-2006, 07:27 AM Parc: As always, thanks for the tips bro :)
I was experimenting last night with my P&S, it's a lot harder without an off-cam flash and not as smooth/dramatic, especially since the background will be exposed.
But I also found out something that'll work for a smoke source...
Plastic-stemmed cotton buds.
The smoke trails are quite thick and it lasts a lot longer before it dies out.... :D
Leonard Formoso 12-17-2006, 11:40 AM Parc
Nice work. very artistic. give me ideas on what else to try
p.s. Are these normal smokes or the special kind that give you more images that there are. just joking. hahaha

If you don't mind, i wanna share my attempt of smoke. My husband burned a crumpled tissue with a penlight under it. I didn't really like the result but i was amazed with how it was formed. It's kinda creepy coz it's like an "alien with a knife", for me ha. So, to those who wanna post process this photo, please do so coz i just wanna see a nicer result. Honestly, i haven't tried using photoshop coz i still don't how to, eh. :( ....Anyways, thanx a lot!

Joeffrey_Reyes 05-14-2007, 08:56 AM Sir Parc, last Saturday afternoon I attempted to experiment doing some smoke-arts and tried to post process them in photoshop. I inverted the image colors to have that white background and made some adjustments on the hue & saturation sliders. But, I'm needing your advise Sir, on how can I create those "metallic emboss effect" same as your excellent masterpieces. I know I'm missing something and I'm posting my original jpeg, and the post-processed one, to please kindly have a look Sir, if I have a problem on getting the shot (lightings maybe) or on the post-processing side. Please advise and thank you very very much Sir.
More power to you!

Derick_Gamboa 05-14-2007, 12:57 PM Parc, i think the creative part and accolades are very much in order. Congrgats! But what caught me was how you existed in the environment????? Absence of air and ventilation is the only way to achieve this. Oh man, suffocation, and air starvation is the amazing segment in the production. This is truly amazing.

Erwin B. Mallari 04-22-2008, 09:23 AM I also try smoke experiment a couple of months ago, but my 1st & 2nd try didn't comes impressive & my asthma attacks for a couple of days (badly) coz i never stop for almost 4hours to capture beautiful formation but unluckily didn't work
but I never give up & prepare for the best settings, then finally im now happy my 3rd attempt's result using 2 strobes with snoot, black back ground, cigarette & candle
I just put the strobes from left & right bit behind the subject & a certain drop of candle to cigarette to make the smoke more thicker.
post processing is just tweaking a certain levels & adjust a bit of color balance
my camera setting is 1/200 f/16
it is also give a best result if you just invert the image.

MelvinSevilla 08-20-2009, 09:41 PM Sorry, a bit OT... David, do you smoke? Or did you just light up a pack or so of marlboros and let it smoke itself out.
David Tong 08-20-2009, 10:02 PM Melvs: No, I used an incense. :P
The photo actually consists of two smoke photos combined, one for the top another for the bottom.
I didn't put a caption to the ambiguous title so you guys can form your own conclusion to what the image is about.. :D

Aside from trying to allow some air to move the smoke, you can also post process the results slightly to allow the photo to form something that exists. Like in the 3rd picture, maybe you can do some dodge and burn on it to form the image of a green snake. Hope this helps. =)
lopemarceljrIBAY 06-28-2010, 11:27 AM I noticed this thread has already been here for quite a while. I'll just add my own smoke photographs =)
