Here's sharing a pic of the moon's Appenine Mountains taken through Manila's polluted skies with my birding gear. :)

Montes Apenninus is a mountain range that's a remnant of old crater walls, probably a result of a cataclysmic impact from an asteroid or comet countless years ago. The largest crater in the center is Archimedes, and next to it are Aristillus and Autolycus (smallest of the three).

Amazing!

Prior to me seeing this, I didn't know DLSRs were even remotely capable of this.

Thanks, Dave. Birding lenses (like the 500 f4 IS, 600 f4 IS or Sigmonster) are quite decent for bigger astro subjects like the moon....:)

Here's a link to a larger version, same lens combo but with the 20D:

Thanks, Carlo and Marlon.

It's actually just a common moonshot, taken when "seeing conditions" over Metro Manila was not so bad. When visibility is good, the only variables to master in moonshots are shake control, accurate focus and proper exposure.

The Sigmonster (Sigma 300-800 DG) is quite sharp, and I see an increase in system resolution at astro-targets up to stacking 2x and 1.4x teleconverters (total length = 2263 mm).

I took a lot of manually focused RAW shots, then selected the sharpest. I used a remote switch and enabled MLU. The combo was mounted on a Manfrotto 3421 gimbal head and supported by a 475B tripod. I initially took some test shots and reviewed the histogram to nail the settings for the ideal exposure.
