View Full Version : The Enclosed 50mm Challenge

Hi folks, forum activity is a bit slow these days so just thought of starting a simple, but (hopefully) engaging and educational challenge to all members.

This is open to everyone and photogs of all levels, but we do have some simple rules:

1) All submitted images must be shot with a 50mm lens, whether it's a 50mm on crop sensor or 50mm on full frame, doesn't really matter.

2) Each participant will have to submit a total of five (5) of your best images in a single post. You may only post once in the thread.

3) The "Enclosed" part of the challenge is you must pick a limited/enclosed space to shoot. You will be forced to find interesting subjects within a small confined area.

There are no hard rules in terms of physical space, but try to limit your shooting space/subject confines to as small of a space as possible. The purpose is to hopefully force you to find things to shoot instead of hoping to eventually find things to shoot. Some examples would be:

What's in my refrigerator
My office/cubicle
The badminton court
The chapel hall
My kitchen
Inside my car
The engine bay
My poker set
My classroom

...and so forth... use your imagination.

Try not to use "Makati" or "Earth" or something of that magnitude.

The key objective is to produce high quality outputs utilizing minimal equiment, limited space, and limited subject options.

4) You may use any lighting equipment, modifier, props, etc.

5) Post-process anyway you like that will complement your subject and/or improve the final output.

6) Be critical of your "Final 5" selections. Choose the right photos, edit well.

7) The format of posting:

Name:
Area/Subject of Choice:
Theme/Objective (if any):
The Photos (numbered).
You may add captions, explanation, exif, PP technique, lighting technique, etc if you wish, not required, but it's all up to you if you want to share.

There are no winners/losers here, just a challenge to yourself with simple gears, small confines, limited subject, fixed lens. The goal is to force yourself to find angles and lighting that you may not be aware of if you spend too much time wandering a large area or tinkering with camera/lens settings.

Hopefully, you'll learn something about your own shooting style rather than trying to constantly dissect others photographer's work. You'll probably find out you have a preference in shooting height, tilt, angle, subject positioning, weight bias preference, shooting style, and other intangibles that you might be aware of.

Finally, have fun, of course.

Remember....

You may only post once in this thread, the post that'll contain your final submission.

Any discussions/questions/comments/praises/C&C should be posted in this discussion thread (http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=26922), not here.

Area of Choice: My boyfriend's room!
Theme/Objective (if any):
- Practice focusing by taking pictures of action figures using only wide aperture values;
- Framing;
- Getting excellent exposure given only one source of light without moving the subjects too much from where they're standing (it was a long row of toys, so it was hard to move them around anyway);
- Getting good white balance given florescent lighting (I usually get awkward colors when shooting with florescent light) without color correction in PP

It was pretty hard with just the florescent light as the main light source, with minimal natural light coming from the window (there was a tree outside!), so I used one of my readings as a reflector to fill in the darker areas, haha. (:

There were so many toys! It was really hard framing them properly without getting other toys into the frame that would end up distracting. And speaking of framing, I tend to have boring angles when I shoot, but given the dynamic poses of the toys, it made it easier to look for where exactly to focus on. (:

I always thought that taking photos of figures would be best shot with macro lenses, but the 50mm was the closest I had to a macro, so what the hey. I initially planned to crop some photos to give it that "close up" look for the toy, but I figured nah, I like these the way they are.

I actually shot inside the bathroom using ambient light armed with a 50mm, a raynox macro conversion lens (which was used in most but not all of the shots) and a 5-in-1 reflector.
