Guys, I'm thinking of getting the 580ex to go with my 30d. Got any suggestions on where to get it so I won't break the bank? Do they have credit card options? Also my brother-in-law lives in HK. He can probably get it for me there too but I'd have to give him the shop name and location (also a general price) since he's not a very good shopper if you know what I mean.

Thanks in advance.

Got my Canon 580ex Speedlite from Mayer (tel - 7337598 or 7337722) in Hidalgo * wait, are you based here? * Spent P18K. It costs a lot more in the malls and other shops. So far, Mayer is one of your best bets

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Yes Mario, it is the same joey server. There's only one. And yes Alan, I am based here. Will check out the links you sent although everything I've read on the flashes say that I should go for the 580 if I can spare the cash. I can just barely. That's why I'm asking where's the best place to get one. Worked with a photog who also had a softbox for his flash and was thinking of getting one myself. He said he got it in quiapo. Know about this?

So far - when i checked out the shops - MAYER in HIDALGO, QUIAPO has the best deal. I also have that softbox. I got it from one of the shops in Hidalgo. Its in one of the shops in facing the little park. I cant find the receipt - but there are not that many "light" shops naman dun - so just ask around - yung sa "little park" area sa Hidalgo. I think I spent not more than P2k for that .. or even less. I forgot na ...

Thanks for the replies guys.
Yes John, the same joey from admu.

Would you guys know how much cheaper in HK?

Mario, the softbox I mentioned earlier isn't the Stoffen. It's more like a mini light box roughly a foot square that attaches to the flash. I was told it cost roughly 3k.

Mario, Checked the link. not quite the same. The one I'm talking about really looks like a mini lightbox that you attach to your flash unit using a bracket-like contraption. I'll ask the photog (Neil Confesor) where he got it. It's pretty cool. He was able to get some really good quality images using it. We were shooting some cars in a garage at the time.

JOEY - GET THE SOFTBOX FROM THE SHOP BESIDE A-1 PHOTO SUPPLY.

AGAIN I CANT FIND THE RECEIPT OF THE STORE THAT I GOT IT FROM ... BUT ITS THE ONE BESIDE A-1 PHOTO SUPPLY. ITS A NIFTY CONTRAPTION ... FOLDABLE, YOU CAN ATTACH IT TO A LIGHT STAND OR IF YOU HAVE A BRACKET FOR YOUR CAMERA... THEN YOU CAN ATTACH IT TO THAT TOO. JUST ASK FOR THE SOFT BOX THAT YOU CAN ATTACH TO A FLASH. THEY WILL EVEN DEMO HOW TO "UNFOLD" IT ... HOPE THIS HELPS. A-1 ON THE OTHER HAND SELLS LIGHTING EQUIPMENT TOO - LIGHT STANDS, MORRIS SLAVE STROBES, ETC. PRETTY CHEAP AS WELL.

My FREE flickr account cannot accept pics anymore .. wait.. let me try and figure this out. But yes, as soon as I have the pic of that softbox, then I will post it. Can you use it for other flash units? Yes you can .. it can also be attached to small light units .. file:///D:/Canon%20EOS%20Pic%20Files/2006_11_30/IMG_9628.JPGfile:///D:/Canon%20EOS%20Pic%20Files/2006_11_30/IMG_9628.JPG

Hi alan (with one L),

Thanks for the link!!! Nice!!! Looks like a very useful item to have!!! and you say it folds down to a small size? smaller than a regular folder?

Alan Fontanilla

It folds flat ... a little bigger than a folder - the flat shape though is that of a triangle.

Hi Joey,

Eric Dino here, the softbox you are referring to can be bought from Avenue Photo Supply in Hidalgo c/o Wilson Lu. It would cost between Php 2.5 to 3k. I saw it last time during the Photoworld Exhibit 2006 at Glorietta. I tried attaching my Nikon SB-600 flash and it doesn't fit. My Nikon flash is similar in size to the Canon 420 and 430 EX Speedlite so as what I told you before, invest only in the best gear and that is the 580 EX Speedlite for your Canon 30D. Prices in Hongkong might be cheaper but it is best that you yourself test the flash when you purchase it. Until then. Best Regards & Hope to drop by soon at Capone's.

Yes - might be better to bring with you your actual flash. This particular portable soft box was able to accomodate my Speedlite 580 EX.
