At first i thought this just happened to me, but i noticed it does for everyone else.
400 posts and still a freshman? not that our DPP status mattered that much here, but did the mods changed anything here? thanks thanks! :-)

I think they made adjustments in the ranking which corresponds to the number of posts in which i read from other threads it is an admin move to some sort.. but the heck, it not the ranking or number of posts which matter here. Most freshman are way better, far way way way better than me..:D its as if im a sophomore and the freshman are more than a master status compared to my skills (if there is any:Grin:)
Good day DPPeers!:)

same here, and 3 of my colleagues as well. initially, i thought mine was an isolated case that i was sanctioned for something that i have violated here in DPP . like what you have said, it's not a big deal. :)

Actually I don't care about this freshman sophomore senior thing under any avatar it's the advice and knowledge you know about photography..... I will laugh at you if you are a master/senior and you don't give good advice to newbee...Mine is senior before but I don't care. It's a glitch maybe moderator can fix it for the satisfaction of those who care for it too much...

Hmmmm..maybe its the beginning of status neutralization so that we should all focus on a member's photos and give a deserving respect for that ( which is what should be ) other than anything else! I agree to this!:)

EDIT: DRAAAAATTTTT!!! I GOT DEMOTED TOO!!! IT HURRRRTTTSSSS!!!! huhuhuhuhu

timramos
08-12-2009, 01:12 AM
As for the new rule by itself, it seems a bit excessive for me; but looking at the bigger picture I think the mods did it because there are some people here who dispense wrong advice (but think they are right) just because they have high rankings. That's bad for newbies who come here looking for sound advice.

Well, that's just what I think.

i hate to say it but, i know a couple of masters, picasso's and michaelangelo's and none of em comes close to some good freshmen i know that shoots well and shut's up good. it really doesnt matter. its overrated!

of course, yes, forum status is overrated. having this as a photography forum,
i wish there was a way to rate the quality of post (be it a photo, a lecture or an advice)..but oh well, VBscript (or Java or whatever language this forum was developed hehe) has its own limitations..

I have encountered a discussion board that kinda evaluates the content of a user's post. You get different points depending on what it contains. I just forgot the name. :(

nino_carandang
08-12-2009, 11:34 AM
not a demotion or anything.

we just changed it since we got feedback that the titles actually misled people into believing that the status actually designated expertise in the field.

so we just kept it simple, freshman -> sophomore -> junior and senior.

no more doctors, experts, mavens and unnecessary whatelse.

nino_carandang
08-12-2009, 11:39 AM
maybe because some dpp posts are more on the chat room/shout out messages rather than changing ideas and opinions. right???

correct didik. there are members that only posts GOOD MORNING "INSERT SUBGROUP" or HERE'S WHAT I HAD FOR LUNCH "INSERT SUBGROUP" and not really contributing to the overall knowledge of photography in the Forum.

post padding such as that, immediately allows these members to rise through the ranks, not by contribution to the community by giving valuable input but rather by greeting their "INSERT SUBGROUP" here in DPP.

so we made a decision to remove the ranks as it led members to think some members are actually experts (not knowing that the original ranking system was post-based).

i hope this simplifies everything. some other changes will be occurring soon. slowly nino, lloyd and i will implement it.

I noticed it the first time the mods changed the status, at first I wanted to creat a thread, just like this, to raise the issue, since I think it's the responsibility of the mods to inform us members of everything that's happening in the forum but I hesitated because I realized that it really isn't that important. I'm the one who posted in Maan's thread titled "Photography Misconceptions" that "you know better if your DPP status is Doctor, Maven, etc...", and it really is a common misconception here. To Nino and the gang, nice work of fixing things and we hope this change makes this forum better. More power and Godbless DPP!

I noticed a sizeable number of members who are overly-conscious (bordering on obsession) of their rank here at DPP that they get a kick out of being a macho Picasso or Michaelangelo or Master, etc.

Addressing this to those who qualify under that description, I say: What matters is the value of your replies/contributions. Rank here does not speak of your RELATIVE expertise in photography. It also DOES NOT necessarily speak highly of your inputs - because we all know for a fact that there is a proliferation here of trivial one-liners such as "Hi!", "Good morning!", "Nice to hear from you!" to a point that such inputs surpass or add up more than one's true and legitimate contributions.

A good example is Lito Sy who is a DPP Freshman, member since 2006. Is he more inferior than me, a Sophomore? Definitely NOT. :)

If I may, I'd like to suggest a ranking system that directly indicates the frequency of posting, rather than one that connotes seniority. Something like "Newbie Poster" or "Posting Expert", or "Need a life outside the forums" are possible titles from the top of my head.

nino_carandang

Yes there is a facility to allow members to rate the quality of threads post here in DPP. It's in your Thread Tools -> Rate Thread located in the upper right of any thread.

I should have posted an announcement regarding the changes. I agree with most of you that the status has become overrated, it didn't go as originally planned so we neutralized it (or actually killed it).

We know that you, the members, are not angry. I hope that this new system makes it better for all of us participating in this community considering that we are growing rapidly.

I was thinking of giving "status" based on how long a member has been a part of the forum and not on how many posts you have be it meaningless one-liners (such as "good morning" as Sam pointed out) or very useful tips (such as the ones given out by David Tong). Just a suggestion.

I don't think the Forum has the capability of doing such a task Romyr. As for the meaningless Good Mornings and Hi-Hello's, that's step two of what will be implemented this month or year.

I replied that Im no expert of advising them which is which! And told them Im freshman in Photography also...
Maybe they PM me because they saw my status as Senior and they assumed that I know everything :D:Grin:

Good Job Mods and Admins...

BTW, whats the bracket or criteria of earning Sophomore, Junior and Senior now?

Before is something like this: (i dont know the exact bracket :))

301-400 = Junior
401-? = Senior

Maybe sir, for the members with less than 3000 posts, we can use medieval ranks, like peon, peasant, knight, page, stableboy, manservant, marquis, baron, lord.

Or maybe units from starcraft - zergling, hydralisk, lurker, etc.

Or maybe lurker, n00b, 1337, Forum Addict, Needs a Life!

Or ranks from the mafia.

Stuff like that.

Then for the VERY senior members, maybe they can send in requests for a custom status, with moderators having an extra status indicating their mod ranking.

How about custom status? members can put status what they want...

but with limitted options:

1. Newbie
2. Master
3. Expert
4. etc...

I think with this options, no one will tag number 2 and 3 unless they deserve it...
Most of the members will tag themselves as newbie only...(kasi mahihiya sila maglagay ng expert or master hahaha)

Or just open it...custom status only (anything we can put on) lets try it for one week hahaha and lets see what members will tag on their status... this gonna be fun hehehe

How about number of photo compliments counter! Its a number under your name on how many people liked the photos youve posted so far. There should be a permanent vote button of like or dont like on each post that has photos in it..like the ones on face off. So members who post great pictures get the most numbers hence the best reputation. APPRECIATION OF PHOTOGRAPHY SKILL SHOULD BE PRIORITY ON STATUS.

I totally agree with what David suggests. Just plain old DPP MEMBER if not then scrap the whole ranking thing. As I see it, newer members do make such a big deal about rankings. I'm not pointing fingers but I've been a member since 2007 and I have like a thousand posts under my name. I do admit that some are just OT posts and what not. I can't imagine how a new member post 3000-4000 posts in a matter of months. Maybe DPP should have a tagline, Digital Photographer Philippines - "Where the number of posts do not reflect skill and experience" :D

Bro, hope its ok with you but I kinda disagree on this one. It can be source of contempt or envy among DPP'ers. I agree that "appreciation of photography skill should be priority on status" but isn't it the purpose of C&C's? Great photos and photographers are appreciated here...no need to count them.
