More micro 4/3 fun!

Note the USB-like port right above the LCD and below the flash mount.

I really wonder if Canon/Nikon would do something like this... The GF1 looks so much like the G10.

David Tong

No clue, but the fact that there are solid photos already and not just mock-ups, they look pretty close to release.

Many reports suggest that the 'port' under the hotshoe is a fingerprint reader.

David Tong
08-07-2009, 01:41 PM
For what? It won't turn on if it's not a recognized print?

Walter Yalung
08-07-2009, 02:02 PM
Beats me, David, it could really be part of the EVF connector

David Tong
08-07-2009, 02:06 PM
Maybe a forehead reader :D :D

Walter: OOOOooohhhhh...

Chuck: That's another Panasonic rebrand product, it's merely a standard 4/3 sensor Panasonic with an unnecessarily oversized and overpriced body.

No longer a rumor. Wow Panasonic!

Been waiting to see that 20mm F1.7 pancake. Hope the pricing isn't too crazy.

According to the hands-on preview (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/PanasonicGF1/), the AF speed of the GF1 with 20mm feels twice as fast as the EP1 with 17mm. And it's even faster with the kit zooms. There are image samples using the 20mm at F1.8 or F1.7. Bokeh looks great; doesn't look busy wide open like some nifty-fifties.

David Tong

The GH1 feels lighting fast and at least twice as fast as the E-P1, so the GH1 shouldn't be a slouch either. One main advantage of the E-P1 is having in-body IS compared to Pana's lens-based IS, however. I do agree that for a small 4/3 sensor, the DOF and bokeh is quite nice.

David Tong

The GF1 is essentially a G1 (with a couple of GH1 features and the loss of a handful of scene modes) squashed into a body that's more or less the same size as the E-P1 - it occupies 35% less volume and is 26% lighter than the G1. It may lack the E-P1's cute-as-a-button retro styling but it does effectively answer the three main criticisms faced by the Olympus: the lack of built in flash (check), the lack of a viewfinder (there's an optional EVF) and the poor focus speed (it has the same impressive system as the other 'G' models). You don't get the E-P1's total compatibility (it currently won't focus any Four Thirds lens that doesn't currently offer live view AF on an Olympus SLR), but those lenses it will focus, it will focus a helluva lot faster.

When we reviewed the Olympus E-P1 we commented that it was a camera you'd buy with your heart; with the GF1 there's now an option for those who like to buy with their head, too.

Oh dear... Time to forget about an EF lens purchase for me hehe.

looking at the previews from dpreview and dcresource, this is going to be the micro 4/3 rangefinder to get.

andrewong
09-02-2009, 01:19 PM
as somebody who has never used one, what kind of pictures can you get from a pancake lens? is it like a wideangle prime?

David Tong
09-02-2009, 01:22 PM
Pancake designs are just physical size design difference from traditional lens design. Usually the trade off is max aperture size when compared to an equivalent traditional prime of the same focal length, but in terms of functionality and field of view, it's identical to any other prime of the same focal length.

Since micro 4/3 is half the size of standard 35mm, you're crop factor is x2, a 20mm prime will now have the equivalent field-of-view as a 40mm prime on a "full frame" 35mm sensor.

"bili bili na mga suki, Lumix LX3 murang mura" haha

will this trigger a flood of 2nd hand LX3's in the market?

EDIT: forgot to say "used.. LX3's" haha

David Tong
09-04-2009, 11:39 AM
Ryan: doubt it, the GF1 is a lot larger (and more expensive) than the LX3, it's a totally different segment.

Dan: All in due time hehe... I wanna see how the silver one looks in real life... That EVF is great, but a bit pricey at $200 (or I'm just being cheap, as usual haha)

David Tong

Curious, if Leica again shamelessly rebrands the GF1 for its own brand, will they remove the grip like they did with the LX? The GF's grip seems to be a very good design according to reviewers so far and if they take that out, it would be hard to hold a camera of that size without a protruding grip.

The thought of a SUMMILUX-M 24 mm f/1.4 ASPH on the GF1 is just droolfest.

I was drooling over the GH1 then the GF1 comes along. This would be nice for its size.
