View Full Version : In-cam commander mode query
manny_illana 11-28-2006, 08:03 AM is it possible to trigger flash slaves/remotes using the in-cam commander mode without the cam firing its on-board flash???
testing out my d200 and sb800 combo and it seems this is one trick it can't do?

set the built-in to "--" instead of "TTL" or "AA" or "M".
manny_illana 11-28-2006, 08:50 AM thanks aris.... will definitely try that later!!!
Aris Guerrero 11-28-2006, 08:54 AM welcome bro! :D
don_garchitorena 11-28-2006, 09:37 AM related question, how is d50 using sb800?
knowing wlang commander ang d50 but sb800 has, panu ang settings?
anyone tried it? im planning to buy but im making sure i invest it right. mahal kasi
Aris Guerrero 11-28-2006, 09:51 AM im assuming you want to use the sb800 off-camera.
set the sb800 on su-4 mode, by pressing the select button for about 3 seconds. choose su-4 mode. pop-up your d50's flash and fire away! :) (this mode will also make the sb800 fire when it sees any flash aside from your d50's built-in speedlight)
hindi nga lang TTL yan, you have to manually set the power of the sb800.
Marton_Benitez 11-28-2006, 10:08 AM Very Helpful to me as well. Thank you Aris :)
don_garchitorena 11-28-2006, 10:14 AM @aris
thanks. quite interesting. medyo cloudy pa ang idea ko.
what you describe was using the sb800 off camera, i can control it remotely by setting it to accept flash signals.
i assume there is delay with its reaction?
there is limited angle of remotely controlling it?

Sir, how about D50 with SB600? Pwede ba?
Aris Guerrero 11-28-2006, 10:21 AM limited angle can be controlled by swiveling the flash head and making the sensor (at the side of the sb800) point to your camera.
no delay. instantaneous. :) there might be a very remote possibility (no pun intended) of a delay due to the (unrecognizable) pre-flash of the built-in flash of the d50 - though i haven't encountered any.
Aris Guerrero 11-28-2006, 10:22 AM you're welcome marton! :)
@darwin, sorry bro, no su-4 mode for the sb600. best way for off-camera would be to use the sc-17 or any nikon TTL flash extension cords (w/c im on the lookout for)
don_garchitorena 11-28-2006, 10:26 AM @darwin
i think sb600 is good as slave (wirelessly?) for both the sb800 and su-800
Aris Guerrero 11-28-2006, 10:32 AM and the other nikon dslrs. d70, d70s, d80, d200. :)
darwinandres 11-28-2006, 10:36 AM Thank you. I should have bought SB800 =(
darwinandres 11-28-2006, 10:37 AM Anyway, I'll just buy the D80 he he he he ....... wish ko lang.
Aris Guerrero 11-28-2006, 10:38 AM the sb800 costs 17k in henry's. pwede! pm mo ko pag dispose mo...... :D
MelvinSevilla 11-28-2006, 03:53 PM Do you guys have any experience with the Su-800 commander? Does it work on cameras without commander modes (e.g. D50 and D40's)?
Thanks in Advance!

ive read it should. its a commander w/o a flash.
sb800 is a command wid flash
sb800 and su800 i think have similar price. for other reason u dont need the extra flash, get the sb800 instead.
MelvinSevilla 11-28-2006, 04:03 PM @ Don
Thanks for the info! :)

manny_illana 11-28-2006, 10:18 PM aris...
tried it but the d200 on-board flash still fires....
here is what i did....
1. set the d200 commander mode built in to -- blank as per image below (*e3 setting)
2. set the sb800 to remote
3. if i don't pop-up the in-cam flash... sb800 wont fire....
if i pop-up the in-cam flash... both the sb800 and in-cam fires....
what gives? thanks....

set the built-in to "--" instead of "TTL" or "AA" or "M".
Marco_Ingco 11-28-2006, 11:49 PM When you set the built-in to "---" it still flashes but those are called pre-flashes and are only used to trigger the remote flashes. You see it flash but it does not register during exposure. The flash actually comes out right before the shutter opens.
nap_alcedo 11-29-2006, 05:15 AM Thanks for this info guys. I have always wondered if I can use a remote SB800 without using the on-board flash. I have always been adjusting the flash compensation of the on-board flash to the lowest possible setting so that it won't really matter that much. I will try it out later and see what happens.
Aris Guerrero 11-29-2006, 06:47 AM yes pre-flash lang yun, it doesnt contribute to the exposure. (when using "--")
don_garchitorena 11-29-2006, 07:34 AM yes pre-flash lang yun, it doesnt contribute to the exposure. (when using "--")
all the while i was thiking it as wirelessly (radio?) triggered as well w/o popping out built in flash.
and the other option of remotely triggering is the flash signalling it to trigger
manny_illana 11-29-2006, 07:44 AM that figures.
thanks again aris and marco...
with that settled, back to practice!
nap_alcedo 11-29-2006, 07:46 AM yes pre-flash lang yun, it doesnt contribute to the exposure. (when using "--")
I agree. I tried the settings without turning on the remote SB800 and the exposure was very dark indeed. It confirms the preflash exposure point. Thanks a lot guys.
Aris Guerrero 11-29-2006, 08:05 AM yep. :) the pre-flash is for the speedlight (camera really) to determine the optimal TTL exposure.
jake_borres 11-29-2006, 09:43 AM quite an interesting thread guys...thanks for sharing
