Hi Folks!
Is anyone familiar with the performance of Sigma 20-40mm f2.8 DG? Someone's selling at dirt-cheap price and I'm wondering what the catch is. I've read limited user reviews from the web and was wondering if you guys have hands-on info you can share.
Thanks! :)

I have no first hand experience with this lens, but upfront, personally, I can say that the focal range isn't very good for a zoom. It's not wide enough; and not long enough. It will be good for typical party group shots though. Also, the f2.8 is a big plus in low light. :-)
But if the price is really good, test it. You might lie it. Just my share.

It's a decent lens for film, but not sure about a crop. I have a 22-55mm from my APS film days and it's a weird range to work with but doable.
One issue you might have is older Sigma lenses will not work on digital without re-chipping. You'll get ERR01 whenever you stop down your aperture.

Thanks guys! I'm about to test it tonight.
Yes, I agree that 20-40mm is a bit odd. I shoot mostly landscapes and architecture and am already planning to get the 11-16 tokina + 17-55 nikkor 2.8's, but thought I'd defer the nikkor for this sigma (considering the low price) and if it performs well, get the 50-150/70-200 instead.
Link to sigma site: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3259&navigator=1 says it's optimized for digital.
This review: http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Sigma-EX-Aspherical-DG-DF-2040mm-f28-4600 is a bit on the positive, I guess. This is the only detailed review I've come across so far.
I figure, if it has minor defects that can be repaired I can still purchase it and have it serviced when I'm in Manila next month. For Php7000 I'm thinking it's not a bad deal. Your thoughts?

Does this lens really exist?

Review dates go as far back as 2005, and sigma indicates it as discontinued. 'Read also that it's a bit susceptible to flare. Not a very famous model, I guess.

I guess not. I have the latest copy of Sigma's Lens Catalogue and I can't find this lens anywhere in that catalogue.

Thanks for the sample, Adrian, and to all who replied! :)
'Took a chance after brief inspection and test shots - looks ok but needs to be stepped down to f4 at least for improved sharpness. I guess it's not a bad deal for PhP7k...

It's like the mutant inbred offspring of a 10-20 and a 17-40 hehe.
Anyway, at 7k, you can think of it as a prime 28 or a prime 35 in a single lens just so that the range doesn't weird you out :p
