View Full Version : Off Cam Flash Shooting ...

I'm a Canon cam user and just yesterday, I was finally able to take my speedlite off my cam with the aid of the following:

- Canon off shoe cord (got it from Mayer)
- Flash Softbox (Avenue)
- holder option to attach an umbrella instead of the softbox for the flash
- light stand

Ang saya-saya! My only dilemma for now is that the Canon off shoe cord is short - so di pa rin pwede gumalaw as much. Is there a way to extend this? Or am I again ... going to starve myself to get the Canon IR transmitter? Or .. sigh .. the pocket wizards?!?:D

Thoughts?

Can't do wireless Off Cam Flash with your Canon dSLR? Which model? I am using wireless off cam flash... 2 to 4 flash units depending on purpose. You can even control the ratio for each flash unit.

Oh .. i better be more specific.

I can do the wireless flash - using my Morris slave strobes using the generic wireless transmitter and even my Speedlite 580. What I cant do for now (till i get the Canon wireles transmitter - OA ang canon kase dapat lahat ka-pamilya nila) is to fire my Speedlite using my generic Morris wireless transmitter. I guess I just wanted to be more mobile as my current slave flashes are AC powered (Morris with the light stands, etc).

Being mobile and wireless is really awesome... I mostly employ this setup on concerts and theater plays... makes the spectators wonder where (and how) the flash units are firing (I'm mostly hiding them in discreet stage locations). And since they're dedicated flashes with particular channels, I'm the only one who can trigger the flashes... more convenient than wireless studio lights/strobes.

So what do you use? PW? or the (in my case) Canon Wireless transmitter ...?

Hi Alan,

Hve you tried checking Pocket Wizard? This one works using radio signals for wireless transmission, more precise than infrared (w/c the transmitter & 580EX is using). Infrared wireless transmission is linear, compared to radio signals which is not directional, which can work even 50 meters away, and you can freely roam around near or far from your flash. :)

But you need to consider light metering. With an ST-E2 and 580EX, somehow the metering is affected when you are to far away from the subject (and no longer precise); but with a pocket wizard, with an aid of a flash meter, you can set your 580EX to manual and meter on it. :)

HAve not tried the PWs - but i know its highly recommended ... need to save up on that one. They easily cost more than 10K ba? Or would you know where its not as expensive?

@Alan... I'm with the Minolta system (7D on the digital side and Dynax-7 on the film end)... the Minolta flash system is somewhat in perfection when it comes to wireless operation (been using combinations of 3600 and 5600 HSD flashes)... no need for transmitters... all are done via signals from camera to flash units... metering is totally awesome, that even if I include one or two firing flash units in my composition frame exposure is still accurate (more accurate on the film camera though).

This will be of major concern to me once I totally switch to another brand (Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax systems)... which system would employ the same setup, without the need for wireless transmitters, and ensure exposure accuracy.

Thanks! Have done a bit of research this afternoon and I can (atleast for now) extend pala din my off cam shoe cord! So while I'm still practicing this off cam flash - its a trip to Ace Hardware for me this afternoon ... to see my "wiring" options.

Good luck to your wiring! :) Hope that you won't find yourself tripped down the ground by those wires, hehe!Konting ingat.

Happy shooting! :)

Hi Allan...

I've been using my 550EX flash off cam for quite sometime now. I'm using a radio trigger and a flash shoe adapter (to be attached to the radio receiver) which I bought from avenue.

Hi Aly,

Yes you can wirelessly trigger the 430ex without the ST-E2.... All you need is an IR or radio trigger.... even those cheap ones (chaina/taiwan made).... and hotshoe adapter (to be connected to the reciever or if you're using IR trigger, get the hotshoe adapter with IR sensor).

Take note that e-ttl mode will not function.... use manual mode... (but im not sure if 430ex has manual mode).

Regards. :)

Its a trip to AVENUE for me soon ... what brand did you say you got? Or do I just say or ask them what I want and they give me options? Canon is a bit OA with "compatibility" so I guess, a wireless radio frequency trigger is really my option. If what you're saying that it costs P5k for a set (?) - then okay na yun .. the Canon IR trigger is around 8 to 9k - and yung possible issue pa nun is dapat line of sight ang flash/receiver. I'm using the new Speedlite 580 by the way to go with my Canon 350.

Just go to Avenue and ask for a radio trigger (they have single and 4 channel). Get the transmitter with reciever pack and get a hotshoe adapter with pc sync attachment. :)

so if I want ETTL to work, I need to get the ST-E2 right?

Alan Fontanilla

Another option is to buy and off shoe flash cord made especially for Canon. The only drawback is that its a really short cord --- so you would need to extend it "mano-mano" using a PS/2 cord or even the lan wires (as long as may at least 5 or six points.

Edlin,

How much does this transmitter/receiver pack cost? I also want to trigger my 430EX wireless.

Personnaly, I would prefer RADIO transmission than INFRARED. Infrared is linear, and I feel like sort of a "limited", especially when shooting from different vantage points with the subject not moving from his/her/its original pose. With a RADIO transmitter, I can roam around without thinking if I am still aligned with the receiver. :)

just an opinion... :)

I agree with the freedom of the radio transmiter vs. the IR. What brand do you recomend to go with a canon 30d? How much would that cost and where is it available?

I bought an EBAY cheap radio transmitter and it's working well.

you can buy a cheap radio transmitter combo @ Avenue in Hidalgo for around 5k, an extra reciever is around 2.5k. Its small unlike PW's and cost a lot less.
