View Full Version : Custom Curves
rosalie_gomez 06-16-2006, 09:49 AM Who uses custom curves? And if so, which ones have you tried/use? I've used Optima and sRealav2 for my D70/D70s. I have not tried for the D200, can I use the same custom curve as the ones made for the D70/D70s? :)
miguel_deleon 06-16-2006, 10:08 AM i've tried a few that escape me now but have settled on optima. for some reason i really like this curve.
gerry_dulay 06-16-2006, 10:15 AM I tried sReala2 and Optima on my D50. I didn't see a huge difference between sReala2 and the default tone curve on the D50 so I don't use it at all. Optima is very different, the colors are definitely rendered differently than sReala2 or the default curve. I still have Optima on my D50 since it's supposed to be good for skin tones, but I never get around to using it when shooting portraits. :)
tj_parpan 06-16-2006, 10:19 AM I was using the Optima curve on my D70 and loaded it on my D200. It works as well. I now loaded the sReala on both cams to try it out. I think I like the Optima curve more, but I'm still assessing the sReala.
rosalie_gomez 06-16-2006, 12:51 PM I used the Optima with the D70 before. I'm now trying sRealav2 for the D70s but so far I'm not impressed. There's a new Optima curve but hasn't been finalized yet. I think I'll try the Optima on both and see how I like it. :)
dindin_lagdameo 06-16-2006, 02:10 PM Now, excuse my ignorance but how exactly do I upload them into my camera? Thanks in advance...
rosalie_gomez 06-16-2006, 02:30 PM To install custom tone curves into your camera, follow the steps below:
Install Nikon Capture on your computer. Connect your camera to the computer via the provided USB cable.
Turn on your camera. If the window below does not appear, launch Nikon Capture Camera Controls through the Start Menu.
Click the “Image Processing” tab.
In the “Tone Comp” menu, select “User-Defined Custom Curve”.
Click “Edit”. A dialog box with a histogram and a photo should appear.
At this point, you can either make your own curve or you can click “Load” to import a previously created tone curve
Click “OK” when you are satisfied. The curve is now loaded onto your camera.

hi rosalie
got mine form the same site as gerry's :)
you can actually mimic the white wedding curve with your D70/s (minus the curve)
> Optimize Image > custom > Color mode = I / saturatuon = normal / hue = -3 (personal preference) / sharpening = +1 (again personal preference)
> exp como +0.3
rosalie_gomez 06-16-2006, 09:56 PM @levi
Thanks for the tip! :) Will try both the curve and your tip. I'm not too happy with the settings of the D70s right now.
levi lacandula 06-16-2006, 10:27 PM thanks for the link! :) p&s is an updated white wedding curve pala.
di ba different sila? have separate curves for that...
rosalie_gomez 06-16-2006, 11:02 PM di ba different sila? have separate curves for that...
White wedding curve was renamed to P&S curve when it was updated. :)
eds_magsayo 06-17-2006, 02:23 AM a question for a newbie:
is it possible to post process a RAW(NEF) file using those custom curves?
Rolando Avecilla 06-17-2006, 09:51 AM I am a big fan of sReala, I have it on my D70 and D200.
Richard Ledesma 06-17-2006, 10:46 PM I tried different curves but I like the sReala 2.
levi lacandula 06-18-2006, 12:31 PM i read somewhere in the net that there's a way of uploading multiple curves in your cam (D70/s)... have you guys heard about this?
nolan_empalmado 06-18-2006, 04:46 PM i think you can only use one curve at a time. given that you only have one custom position under the tone menu on the camera.
rosalie_gomez 06-18-2006, 08:57 PM i read somewhere in the net that there's a way of uploading multiple curves in your cam (D70/s)... have you guys heard about this?
Nope, haven't come across any information re this. Interesting though if someone managed to find a way to do so.
joe_galian 07-30-2006, 11:08 AM I use the P&S curves. It simulates film more and doesn't overexpose the whites of wedding gowns. If you upload any curves to your camera, it stays with any capture photographs-even with RAW files.
Anton Sheker 08-04-2006, 11:00 AM I used the Sreala also on my d70.. dont have any yet on the d200... hmm.. another experiment... who want to join for a curves testing shoot?
levi lacandula 08-04-2006, 11:05 AM I used the Sreala also on my d70.. dont have any yet on the d200... hmm.. another experiment... who want to join for a curves testing shoot?\
im in anton. when? where?
Rolando Avecilla 08-04-2006, 11:17 AM I am using sReala 2.0... it's faithful to the actual color, so do not expect for boosted colors, but it boost the midtone so you need not compensate for the under exposure habit of our camera. :D

yep weekends would be best! just shout out the date and time :)
btw, im currently experimenting with Optima II. still trying to tweak it to my taste. Am a fan of the point and shoot curve (used that alot on my travel photos).

I used the Sreala also on my d70.. dont have any yet on the d200... hmm.. another experiment... who want to join for a curves testing shoot?
Melvin Vivas 08-14-2006, 01:48 AM I was wondering if we can create our own custom curves. Is it possible?
Raffy Crucillo 08-14-2006, 07:33 AM I've just recently discovered custom curves. I find it a super helpful addition to my D70s. I'm using the optima curve (and I also like the sreala). :)
Sonny Thakur 08-14-2006, 01:21 PM Sreala for now hehe. Great colors. very lifelike, almost no need for PP.
jerome pagunsan 08-15-2006, 05:10 PM I have used Sreala2 for quite sometime on my D70. I'm aiming for D200 but i was discourage with the results especially in LowLight, i constantly compensate on exposure considering i have correct WB and appropriate ISO settings. Maybe i'm spoiled with Sreala2 results with brilliant whites and detailed shaded area.
As Rolando said it works well with D200, and it must be exciting. I will load the Sreala2 on my friend's D200 to experiment, he doesnt know tone curves yet, I will demonstrate with him and maybe he will like it too.:)
Sonny Thakur 08-15-2006, 05:31 PM Share the results with us Jerome :D
eli_vaningen 11-15-2006, 12:30 AM Sorry for my ignorance. I thought that with RAW you are getting the data as is.
So, is it then possible to apply curves on the PC ??
If not, why not.
ALso, with NV and NC, Nikon supplies tens of D100... and D200.... icm profiles. What are those for ??
Selamat po (or so)

from what i know... if you shoot RAW... then there's no point in uploading curves to your camera... as what you've said - its getting data as is....you can apply the curves in post processing:)

melvin, i think this is possible... there's an option to edit a particular curve and save it.
is it neat?! :) love my nikon!:)

jason_buera 11-15-2006, 09:48 AM hi guys! i was trying to load tone curves on my D200 last night but when i attach in on my laptop, camera control v.4 says that no camera was detected (i'm using mac OS X). why is this? do i need to upgrade to camera control pro? the camera control v.4 in my laptop was from the installer that i got from my D70.
what to do? thanks!
Rolando Avecilla 11-15-2006, 10:07 AM Change the Camera's USB mode to the other mode than "Mass Storage" mode. :)

i tried "Mass Storage" and "PTP" but still no go. :(
Rolando Avecilla 11-15-2006, 10:14 AM Jason, it should be on PTP mode. have you tried Nicon Capture? The Control is just new, most probably, it is buggy.
jason_buera 11-15-2006, 10:15 AM i'll try again later. might be the USB cable. i hope. :(
Rolando Avecilla 11-15-2006, 10:17 AM Jason, great.. I hope it is nothing serious. :D

darwinandres 11-15-2006, 10:21 AM This is what made me change system aside from spot meter and 1/500 synch. I love my Nikon!
Thanks to all the links posted here about curves. I'm learning a lot about Nikon.
Question: For weddings, what curve do you guys specifically use. thanks
Rolando Avecilla 11-15-2006, 10:25 AM Darwin, I still use sReala2...
You should try D200, it syncs upto 1/8000 :D

Nikon?! Am i dreaming?! :D Darwin, is this you?! hehehehe
I tried the sReala once.
darwinandres 11-15-2006, 10:58 AM Thanks. I've downloaded the sReala2.
No way! 1/8000? WOW! I mean, D200 can synch with studio strobes up to 1/8000? I should get D200 than D80. I was planning to get the D80 this christmas.

Ah. Since Nikon ka na mag-switch na lang ako ulit. hahahahaha :D
Seriously, Nikon colors are really good. The custom curves thing is also a very nifty feature that my previous camera does not have. The feature is also there in the D70. I think it's also possible to use your own curves.
My problem now is my Nikon Capture already expired and I don't know how to transfer the curves to the camera.
Welcome to the dark side!
darwinandres 11-15-2006, 11:24 AM @Jason. What i don't want with D200 is the flash synch of 1/250. I'll think about it really good. he he he.
@Rolando. Ah ok. I need the 1/500 flash synch 'coz I shoot with strobes outdoors.
@Melvin. Balik ka sa Canon? he he he. Go ahead. har har har. I really love the colors of Nikon. I also have this problem. I don't have the Nikon view and Picture Project. Meron ka ba?
allan fausto 11-15-2006, 11:53 AM In my experienced Nikon is good, I have a Canon but I never use it for some reason.

tried white wedding curve or p&s curve... pretty cool output.:)
darwinandres 11-15-2006, 12:23 PM Thanks Levi. I already downloaded the curves, but my problem is I can't download the trial version of Nikon Capture.
=(
louie_lao 11-15-2006, 12:31 PM Looks like a lot of people use sReala2 for most occasions. I better try it out! :)
Melvin Vivas 11-15-2006, 12:39 PM Thanks Levi. I already downloaded the curves, but my problem is I can't download the trial version of Nikon Capture.
=(
It should come with your camera right? I have the trial version and it's included in the D70s package.
darwinandres 11-15-2006, 12:51 PM It's in different language. =)
jason_buera 11-15-2006, 01:37 PM Jason, great.. I hope it is nothing serious. :D
i tried it again a while ago. the USB cables (ihave four of them) and the USB terminals are working fine. i think i have to re-install nikon capture control. nikon capture editor can't even load it. :)
thanks for the inputs!
don_garchitorena 11-15-2006, 01:45 PM I tried sReala2 and Optima on my D50. I didn't see a huge difference between sReala2 and the default tone curve on the D50 so I don't use it at all. hmm.. bagong kaalaman. thanks guys :)
gerry did mention about optima and sReala2 on D50... are other curves also applicable?
anyone on D50 tried other curves?
orlando_arcelao_jr 11-15-2006, 02:45 PM Tried sReala2 and Optima too on my D50 and was not satisfied with the result that's why I reverted to its default tone curve.
eli_vaningen 11-15-2006, 02:59 PM i tried "Mass Storage" and "PTP" but still no go. :(
If I remember well, in my case themanual tells me to use PTP (D200) and it works well.
eli_vaningen 11-15-2006, 03:02 PM Studio, not in studio, still 1/250 on studio.
What is the advantage or consequence of using 1/250 or 1/100, 1/60, if the strobe speed is so much shorter ??
eli_vaningen 11-15-2006, 03:08 PM See my earlier question: I have loads of Nikon provided ICM files like:
Nkx_D100_1_0004_02_308.icm
Where are those for ??????
And can I use the curves in Nikon Capture? If so, how?
don_garchitorena 11-15-2006, 03:49 PM Tried sReala2 and Optima too on my D50 and was not satisfied with the result that's why I reverted to its default tone curve.

:D
hmmmm????whats the point in using a custom curve if ur shooting in raw? u stil PP ur raw pics ryt? as i undersatnd u use custom curves to minimize ur pp. isnt it that when shooting in raw ur custom curves wont work? is this correct?im puzzled. heheheh:)

darwinandres 11-17-2006, 08:30 AM Yes! i finally got a Nikon Camera Control and tested curves on my D50. I'm now using the Optima RC5.
@Levi. I tried the point and shoot as well as the white wedding, but there's so little difference from the default tone of D50. maybe it's the camera. I like the Optima RC5 for shooting lansdscape
Thanks to all. I'm very very happy with my Nikon. No regrets. he he he he.

Melvin/Levi,
Yes you can load/personalize a curve using Nikon Capture and save it as your own custom curve. You can even save the default curve before you load any other custom curves. I have Sreala2 loaded on my D100 (and with my D70 before i sold it), there used to be a Velvia curve available before but I can't seem to find it now. Anyway, the current curve loaded on my D100 works well especially on hightlights and skin tones.

This is one of the reasons why I love my Nikon:Grin:.
Rolando Avecilla 11-17-2006, 09:42 AM Let me answer for Sir Carlo...
Yes, you can revert back to previous curve if you re install it. The current curve is always overwritten when you load a new one.
Only the D2X can load 4 curves at a time.
:D
@ Carlo, sir i have a shoot on sat. will try to use it as often as I can. if imnot happy with it I will revert it back to sreala v2. :)
