View Full Version : ON ASSIGNMENT 6.0 : Planning and Selection
Derick_Gamboa 07-02-2009, 08:33 PM "The moment we break faith with one another, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out."
OA Team 6.0
Preliminary data from Caltex and MTV is shown below. This draft was submitted by Caltex this afternoon for our review.
This is the MTV proposed schedule. While we are not obliged to shoot based on the specific location, we are mandated to blend alternative suggestions/options (locations within the area) in the timeline for the best results that would depict character of the (area) coverage for the day.
We have a separate bus for the DPP team, and this will allow us to deviate (move around) from the timeline and move around freely on agreed coverage. OUTPUT of the team is the primordial concern for success. Placing our best foot forward to determine the best outcome is #1 objective.
There are no wrong and right answers/suggestions at this point. We are soliciting ideas (from the team and other forum members) specially those who have seen the area, and have vast experience in "rare vantage" points. This is not a competition within the group. We will only win when we produce the largest variety of photographed selections for the next days.
Limitations are only in your imaginations, keep posting them here, and I will call a meeting next week to have the team decide.

Aly_Reyes 07-02-2009, 08:43 PM During OA 4.0, I remember a number of us brought our laptops during the trip so that we could upload our experience at real time mode. For internet access, you can bring Globe visibility or tattoo or Smart Bro. If not, when you have your meals at Max's, ask the waiter for the password for your FREE wifi.

I'll start with Day 1 in San Fernando, La Union. I'm not very familiar with this place and I hope that DPPers can provide more details. I've also provided links for all to have an idea of how the sites look like (the images are not mine, they belong to their respective owners).

Town of Luna is kinda out of the main road i think and check out the heritage site church of Santa Maria Ilocos Sur. You can also make a special feature on bell towers built apart from their churches such as Sta Maria, Magsingal, Bantay, Vigan, Laoag, Paoay, etc...
ann_francisco 07-02-2009, 10:32 PM Hi Derick!
Not really a fan of Malacanang of the North when we went there a couple of years back. Didn't find anything interesting to see. Well, that's just my opinion. :)
Ansbert B. Bidol 07-02-2009, 11:17 PM Hi Team,
Iam reviewing now the IT for us to shoot at the right timing...looking some good spot :)
jay jallorina 07-02-2009, 11:38 PM The Paoay Church shoot should be done in the afternoon. Doing so in the morning would mean shooting the church silhouetted against the sun and that won't bode well if you want to capture the fine adobe texture of the facade.
Vigan must be photographed at first light starting at 6am to 8am (late breakfast for the team). Shooting it later in the day will mean hordes of tourists and their 70-200 f/4Ls poking across calle crisologo.
Much time should be spent in Bangui Wind Mills especially since this is a very unique landscape. Maira-ira/Blue Lagoon is a shadow of its former pristine state and is not particularly appealing since it is just plain beach (now with several resorts dotting the coast). Rocky coast shoot can be had off the coast of Burgos (below the light house) or in Kapurpurawan.
One of the best coastal spots to shoot in Ilocos is the coast of Narvacan. fantastic opportunities for coastalscaping there.
just some suggestions guys. will be back for more if i remember my ilocos well.
Jayson Poon 07-02-2009, 11:40 PM Just sharing : Sta Monica Church in Sarrat has some Spanish Ruins worth visiting. :D
Ickhoy De Leon 07-03-2009, 01:52 AM Thank you everyone for pitching in your inputs and suggestions. Pls keep em comin!
God bless :)

danpagulayan 07-03-2009, 08:10 AM Any DPPers from San Fernando, La Union, who can provide more inputs for the San Fernando portion of OA6?
Thanks in Advance
mitzpicardal 07-03-2009, 10:23 AM Where's Bonjour Lighthouse? Did the french renamed Cape Bojeador in Burgos already?.
1. There's nothing to shoot in San Fernando, LU or Poro Point. Just old airbase and black sand beaches. All the images posted by Dan are on or very near the National Highway. You can just see from your bus window if they're interesting or not .
2. Nothing to shoot in San Juan unless there's a Surfing Camp or competition.
3. Shoot calle Crisologo early in the morning or at night.
4. Nothing to shoot at Baluarte except tigers with chains up close or caged animals (except the deers where you can photograph drinking in a man-made mini falls) . Baluarte is for the kids. It's crowded also. Ilocos abel (weaving) and burnayan (pottery) are better.
5. Drop by Bantay Belltower near Vigan
6. Shoot Paoay church late in the afternoon.
7. The sand dunes is also in Paoay, IN like the Paoay church (not in Batac). Shoot both before going to Laoag.
8. Cape Bojeador lighthouse and Kapurpurawan rock formation are both located in Burgos, IN. Shoot this after Laoag and before going to the Bangui.
9. Pagudpud beaches is already crowded. Better shoot the nearby Kaibigan Falls in same town or the Anlupig Falls in Adams, IN.
Before you reach Vigan (sunrise) you'll pass by Paraiso ni Juan in Narvacan, IS. This is excellent place to shoot seascape. A town before Narvacan is Sta. Maria where one of UNESCO heritage church is located.
Your IT is soo bitin. I thought you're circumnavigating Northern Luzon passing by Region 2 as well.
@ Derick, what's that map for? Why are there placemark on the towns of San Gabriel, LU, Galimuyod, IS and Piddig, IN? Theres nothing interesting to shoot at those towns except probably the "joints" in San Gabriel or "catfish" in Piddig .

Thanks, Mitz. This is a very important input for Derick and Ickhoy to consider, as MTV is parking in this town on Day 1.
Derick_Gamboa 07-03-2009, 10:39 AM Mitchell, wherever you are, thank you for the suggestions. As they say in the blue ribbon committee, NOTED.:Grin:

Jon agner 07-03-2009, 05:07 PM Congratulations to DPP team OA6 :) Looking at your itenerary it's going to be a fun trip. :) I've recently visited the places mentioned in the itenerary (except for Laoag going up .... my trip ended in Currimao, IN), and I'm sure, you guys would be taking snapshots of everyday life in these places :)
danpagulayan 07-03-2009, 05:11 PM Jon, may you share your insights? --- suggested itinirary, nplaces to stay, etc.
Thanks
MelvinSevilla 07-03-2009, 05:40 PM OA6 Guys,
Just some of my suggestions: I think you'll be passing some interesting churches along the way. You can do a 15-minute shoot and run in a snap (no pun intended).
- Sta. Lucia Church
- Sta. Maria Church
- Badoc Church
I think the others have covered some other interesting sites already. :)

Hi Melvin, thanks for pointing the churches out. I'm from Sta. Lucia.
You guys might want to consider also the church in Santiago, IS. :)
Jon agner 07-03-2009, 06:54 PM Jon, may you share your insights? --- suggested itinirary, nplaces to stay, etc.
Thanks
Dan,
I guess the DPP OA6 Itenerary is quite good. I think the heritage sites have been mentioned, but for me, It's the people and the everyday living that should be captured :) For instance, the dry fish stalls along the national road in San Fernando would be an interesting subject; the boatmen casting their nets; or the steel bridges linking the various towns of Ilocos Sur; or the other streets in Vigan that criss crosses Calle Crisologo :) (Perhaps a picture on how to make vigan longganisa :Grin::Grin: ); By the way, Vigan 10 years ago is different from the Vigan I recently visited ... there's already Jollibee, Mcdo, greenwich and a mall. In fact, the interior of one heritage structure has been converted into a department store.
Going up north, the green tobacco fields would be a fun subject. In my case, I wasn't able to take pictures as we proceeded directly to our destination in Currimao (Playa Tropical resort), without stopping at those tobacco plantations :(
For places to stay, I stayed most of the time in one of those small beach resorts in San Fernando. In Vigan, there's one hotel along the Heritage Row but I stayed in one of the small Inns just a few blcoks from Calle Crisologo.
Oh, I almost forgot...... when we went north two months ago, the national road is being repaired.
I'll look for some good snapshots of these places and load it in the gallery :)
danpagulayan 07-03-2009, 06:57 PM Jon, thanks!!!
We'll take that into consideration, esp the San Fernando leg.
mitzpicardal 07-03-2009, 10:45 PM I think the national road going up north has a lot of portions still under repair. Your driver should know the detours/ alternative routes.
Don't go home without these (or at least tasted it):
1. Bagnet (any town in IS has it)
2. Vigan and Laoag longganisa (they're different)
3. Ilocos Chichacorn in different flavors (factory in Santa, IS)
4. Tupig (along towns of Rosales up to Urdaneta in Pangasinan)
5. Bibingka (cooked along road in Tagudin, IS)
6. Marsha's Bibingka, Cassava Cake, Puding (along Nat'l highway in Bantay, IS before Vigan)
7. Papaitan (any towns in IS)
8. Pinakbet (anywhere)
You may want to drop by also in Puro, Magsingal, IS and buy some bikes and other Japanese goods tax free :D.
Derick_Gamboa 07-04-2009, 02:21 PM Do you think we should bring props? :):)
dindin_lagdameo 07-04-2009, 03:23 PM welcome back super mom. We missed you here. :)
Thanks, Nap.
raymondcruz 07-05-2009, 04:33 PM 4. To trek to Tuguegarao and photograph 11-hectare rolling hills of Iguig Calvary Hills and massive limestone chambers of Callao Caves.
how about callao caves and iguig? :)

Derick_Gamboa 07-06-2009, 06:08 PM We're consolidating all options before the end of the week. Thank you to those who gave suggestions. While content and desire-to-do-so, is the least of our concerns, we are limited by the overall organizational structure, and have to make do with givens.
This is where creativity with techniques, elements of time, and the environment will play a pivotal role. We are 10 persons, we have 1-2 hours per location, we have 10 cameras minimum , and more than 1000 man hours of experience. Make your own list and get ready to participate during the meeting.
Team OA 6.0 I have sent you private PM's for the schedule, I need to know by Wednesday morning. :)
Jared Posion 07-07-2009, 04:22 AM Congrats to the new team!
Congrats Maestro Derick sounding very corporate and TATAY like! :-P
I did a small project for the Ilocos Sur Provincial Government Cultural Mapping project last April and May of this year and we did went to all the towns in IS. The heritage sites are a given destinations, I read some very good suggestions like the Bantay Bell Tower (afternoon shoot) which is along the highway before entering the town of Vigan, also, Calle Crisologo in Vigan (mid day shoot for travel photos) if you want to do architectural or long exposure layouts early morning or make it a night-shoot and don’t forget to try the infamous Royal Bibingka beside Café Leona, and the Sta. Maria Church of course in Sta.Maria (morning shoot). In Vigan, burnayan is a must, and try to visit the best bbq place in Caoayan, just ask the local tricycle guy! :-)
Try to research regarding the Basi Revolt history (check the Basi Revolt Paintings, Burgos Museum) you might find the topic interesting. As for the Abel weaving, there are so many commercialized abel weavers perhaps you might want to reconsider the traditional abel weavers (mosquitero – mosquito nets) which I find more photogenic, there is one abel weaver in the town of candon who does weaving for the dead royalty or prominent families.
The High Lands of Ilocos Sur (part of the Cordillera Mountain Range) is also interesting although looking at your time frame I doubt if you can squeeze in sometime, the municipalities of Suyo, Cervantes, Alilem, Quirino and Gregorio Del Pilar are home to our Igorot, Kankanay and Itneg cultural communities.
I did my personal trip to Ilocos Norte on a weekend, Paoay church is a must as well (late afternoon shoot), and please allot more time in Pagudpud (great white sand and clear waters, a true alternative to Boracay) there are nice rock formations on the left side of the beach which is also a good location for sunset seascape , and you can actually see Bangui Windmills from the beach of Pagudpud. Do not miss Patapat Viaduct , but you have to shoot it on your way back as the curves are more prominent from that angle. Adams is a good suggestion, although I don’t think there is enough time.
I totally agree with mitz, skip San Fernando, LU and go straight to Vigan and perhaps you have enough time to stay overnight in Pagudpud before heading back to manila.
Given the days allotted, bitin!
Enjoy the trip guys!
Derick_Gamboa 07-07-2009, 09:42 AM Very interesting suggestions from those who have been there particularly to SHOOT. I was there several times, some 20 years ago, but to eat and sleep, aka tourists. :)
Congrats to the new team!

Derick_Gamboa 07-07-2009, 01:06 PM I agree Dan/Jiggie.
Suggestions - Coffee shop of the New World Hotel at 5pm. Or across at BIZU GB2
Relatively quiet, ample parking in the hotel or across at GB2/3. Food a bit pricey but depends on what you order kasi KKB ito!!!:Grin::Grin::Grin:

Game, or since we are meeting at around that time I think any resto in the GB3 row will still be relatively quiet :)
nina de guia 07-07-2009, 01:21 PM i'm good to go anywhere, anytime this friday:)
Derick_Gamboa 07-07-2009, 01:40 PM Bizu it is on Friday. Please come ready with concrete suggestions you want, and you feel, will meet the teams objectives. :)

I would have suggested a seminar room at Caltex courtesy of Ickhoy. (translation: baka nga lang mapasubo si Ickhoy at mag pamerienda na rin. :Scared:)
Most of our meetings during the OA4.0 was done at 6750 in a classroom type venue which was more conducive for a meeting. But since you have announced Bizu already, I guess that's that. :)
danpagulayan 07-07-2009, 02:42 PM I'll be there.
jake_amora 07-07-2009, 02:47 PM will be there po... :)
Ansbert B. Bidol 07-07-2009, 03:11 PM Already send my schedule, thursday and friday is fine with me... Thanks!

We have a meeting the following week at Caltex. And we had our fair share of meetings called by Ickhoy. So that's nothing new.............. toink, 3 pts. :D:D:D:D
Noel Puyat 07-08-2009, 09:54 AM See you on Friday at Bizu GB2 at 5PM.
danpagulayan 07-08-2009, 10:07 AM Derrick, may I suggest that each of us bring some references that we can use during discussions
Route Map (showing distances) -
City Maps - I have an EZ Map for San Fernando LU, Vigan IS, and Laoag IN
List of hotels/resorts near or in the cities we will visit
Books/Travelogues - I can bring one for Ilocos Norte
Laptop (e.g., for googling, if necessary)
Many of the reference materials may be obtained by searching the net.
Thanks

Or, I think they have wi fi there. If you have a notebook, that would be fine. Let me call them up and check.
Derick_Gamboa 07-08-2009, 11:15 AM BIZU is closed for two weeks. They are moving to a new location in GB3. Up for suggestions on the same area please.
Just to keep the ball rolling, ITALLIANNI'S.:):)
danpagulayan 07-08-2009, 12:10 PM Hi All, over the last hour, I have been in communications with Derick.
As it turns out, Atty. Noel Puyat has graciously offered his residence at 7 Caimito Place, Forbes Park South. This is a gated community with a separate entrance (I think), and special security arrangements. I understand that Noel will provide us instructions later.
Thank you very much, Noel, for your hospitable offer.
Inasmuch as some of the OA6 team members may need transport, I am willing to take in four of you in my vehicle. I'll be waiting at 4PM at the Starbucks in the mini-mall fronting San Antonio Church in Forbes Park.
To get there, alight at Ayala-EDSA intersection, then take one of the jeepneys plying the McKinley route. You can also walk, but that will be a 700-meter trek.
See map below.

Noel Puyat 07-08-2009, 12:13 PM Hi everyone,
If privacy is key to our meeting, we can hold it in my house on friday.
7 Caimito Place, South Forbes Park, Makati
It is very easy to get there - just go down Mckinley Avenue (if you're coming from EDSA), pass Manila Polo Club, then right on Caimito Place. Our house is the one with a wooden gate at the end of the street. In case you reach The Fort, you have already missed our street.
Coffee and heavy snacks on me.
What do you think?
Noel Puyat
danpagulayan 07-08-2009, 12:16 PM Thanks again, Noel. I'll bring some food, too.
Noel Puyat 07-08-2009, 12:18 PM Hi Dan,
Our street is the only street outside the gated subdivision. For those with cars, you can park in front of my house, to those commuting, you can get off at Caimito Place by taking a jeep, the fort bus or ride piggy back on those motorcycles at the curb beside Shell gas station. You can walk into the street, our house is the 4th house on the left.
Noel
danpagulayan 07-08-2009, 12:36 PM Noel, thanks again. Im now thinking of moving the meeting place at the Shell station. Is there a way to turn from the Shell station onto Mckinley, without crossing EDSA?
Derick and other Mods, is it OK to make this thread sticky until July 22?
Thanks
Ansbert B. Bidol 07-08-2009, 12:57 PM Hi everyone,

Thanks for offering your place really appreciate it, actually I work in The Fort so it's near yet so far hehe joke, I will just park my car near your place...
Thanks Again,
Abet
Noel Puyat 07-08-2009, 01:01 PM Dan: Somewhat.
Once you are ready to leave Shell, just exit EDSA then take a right into the little road behind the gas station (where the jeepneys park). It will lead you back to Mckinley Road.
NOEL
Noel Puyat 07-08-2009, 01:17 PM Hi Abet,
When coming from The Fort and entering Mckinley Road, our street is the second one on your left side.
See you on friday.
Noel
Derick_Gamboa 07-08-2009, 05:19 PM @Dan, thank you for posting. We were all "on the go" this am.
@Noel, Thank you very much for coming to the rescue. I agree with Dan, we'll all bring something for dessert for everyone to share. :):)
See you all Friday!!!
PS. I got a call from Nino asking for the adjusted itinerary suggestions. MTV's on Ickhoy, Ickhoy's on him, and he's on us....... given we just received this notice this afternoon, we'll make it a point to post all updates on this thread while meeting is going on. Before 12mn on Friday, it will be posted here. :)

Derick_Gamboa 07-11-2009, 03:36 PM Meeting went pretty well identifying what we want to achieve. Thank you to members of team OA6 for your participation last night.
Noel, thank you for hosting the meeting.
I will coordinate with Des of Caltex for the changes of some hotel booking times.
@Ickhoy, Nino, for your information. The basic premises of the adjusted itinerary are based on the following:
A. We, DPP team ao6 will have a separate bus from the MTV team for flexibility and mobility.
B. We will be moving technically several hours ahead of the MTV team's schedule you have mentioned. We are not going to deviate from the MTV schedule as a general rule. We will just not stay as long as the MTV people in one locality after getting enough shots, WE MOVE ON.
C. Basic assumption is we want best sun rise and sunsets. Given that premise, we need to be at certain points latest at 4am.
Here are the changes in time ETD/ETA's on the next 4 days.
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 10pm Pull out from Manila
Thurs, July 23, 2008 Day 1 San Fernando la Union
SAME Morning Schedule ( we will try to cover as much MTV activity in the morning)
Before lunch Team AO6 leaves for Poro point, Jiggie Alejandrino made arrangements with Thunderbird Resorts for us to be hosted for lunch. In consideration of being mentioned in this route and part of the trip.
@Nino please send email from your office to:
Mr. Shaun Thomsen - Property Manager
sthomsen@thunderbird-asia.com
Thunderbird resorts, Poro Point
Just to formally inform them of this official activity. (Jiggie will follow through) :)
Team AO6 will leave for Ilocos Sur immediately after lunch. We will be shooting and stopping in predetermined towns along the route to shoot. We will not be sleeping in La Union. We request that hotel booking in Ilocos for our team be done for an anticipated arrival at 7-8pm in the evening of thurs. instead of the original Friday arrival.
Friday July 24 Day 2 Ilocos Sur.
Same schedule of the MTV team, but we have elected assignments to shoot a variety of activities with MTV. Others will cover the city .
We will rest after sunset and dinner. We will depart at 1:30 am for Ilocos Norte instead of the original 4am to catch sunrise on predetermined points along the way. We will meet MTV in hotel assigned. Please make necessary arrangements for Hotel early arrival and bookings.
Sat, July 25 Day 3 - Ilocos Norte.
1:30am depart for Ilocos Norte and shoot at predetermined points along the way.
Rest of the day the same as earlier schedule.
Sun, july 26 Day 4 - Ilocos Norte

I will email this to Des of Caltex. Please reply for comments, violent or otherwise. :)
Derick_Gamboa 07-12-2009, 04:54 PM Nino, Ickhoy, the team is aware of the tentative schedule this week (14 July, Tuesday, 6pm at 6750) . Please confirm, date, time and location so we could all make plans early on. Thank you.
