Hi John,
I like the lighting in this shot. Can you share the settings you used, I think no flash was used in this photo, right?:)
Red Dungca 03-29-2007, 12:38 PM @John,
I browsed the whole thread and I can say you'll definitely be one of the best photojournalist there is. Like they always say in this thread you have the passion for it. Congratulations, awesome captures!:)
john_javellana 03-29-2007, 12:43 PM oo noh! it was raining L lenses yesterday! 95% of the photojournalists there were using canon. thank you, for the nice remarks. :)
i'll be posting more shots later when i get home from class. i hope you guys can share your insights; second opinions really do matter because we always have something that we don't see or realize.:)
i guess my inexperience showed when i failed to get a photo of the suspect, jun ducat as he exited the bus. for me was the most telling shot. i was already at a great vantage point when they were releasing the kids but i decided to move in closer which costed me the shot. oh well, i really felt bad about it but my photojourn friends just consoled me by saying that "hindi mo naman maiiwasan yung mga bagay na yun. natural lang yan" and that even some of them weren't able to get any. just proves that i still have lots to learn, but i hope i'll get there someday! :)
john_javellana 03-29-2007, 12:51 PM Hi John,
I like the lighting in this shot. Can you share the settings you used, I think no flash was used in this photo, right?:)
hi red, thank you so much :)
cam used was a 350D; i put it into manual mode, boosted the iso to 1600 (that's what i love about canon!), shutter at 1/13 sec, aperture at f/3.2 auto white balance. that's for the second shot. for the first one it's the same, except it was at iso 800. the images hasn't been post-processed, and that 's when i saw one of the biggest advantages canon can give you - good high iso performance. thanks again red! :)

thank you for the nice remarks mark :) first of all, i'm not a pro yet.. i'm just shooting for our school paper hehe.. i just saw it in the news and just ran there! having friends in the industry helps as well. the thing for me is that you gotta have a press id (mine was issued by our school paper) so that you will be not out of place. usually sisitahin ka ng mga police as an "usisero" even if you don't have one. worse, you can even be suspected as a snitch during rallies by the protester for example (in my case i got cornered by 4 guys in a rally once). i don't think you'll be granted access to the scenes as well if you don't have one. so un, having an id is really a big thing. i might be missing out on other important details but i hope this helps! :)

Winston Baltasar 07-06-2007, 12:54 PM hi red, thank you so much :)
cam used was a 350D; i put it into manual mode, boosted the iso to 1600 (that's what i love about canon!), shutter at 1/13 sec, aperture at f/3.2 auto white balance. that's for the second shot. for the first one it's the same, except it was at iso 800. the images hasn't been post-processed, and that 's when i saw one of the biggest advantages canon can give you - good high iso performance. thanks again red! :)
1/13sec?! You've got steady hands, John! I have a 350D and like you, I'd love to have a wider lens.
"boosted the iso to 1600 (that's what i love about canon!) " You mean you can't do that on a Nikon?!! :)
Great shots! Ditto on the others' comments about your photojournalism career.
I'm a writer who got more into photography because I was sent on junkets without a photographer. May I suggest you hone your writing skills as well. You'll get more assignments that way. Note that it's the writers who get sent on junkets abroad. An editor would prefer to send a double whammy photographer/writer guy. :)

hello sir! thank you for the warm remarks and advice. yeah personally i do think that i need to improve on that aspect. sometimes it can be so hard to put into words or text what you have in your mind! that's why i have this huge admiration for people who can write well :)
not really steady! just practice.. what i do is i stick my camera hard on my face and make sure that i grip it securely. and it's not as successful all the time; that shot was 1 in 4 if i remember it correctly!
about that iso 1600 thing; it has been proven that canon has better high iso performance than nikon. i've shot iso 3200 on a 30D, had it printed a4 size and it was acceptable. noise was evident but still acceptable. thanks again! :)

DondiNolasco 07-23-2007, 10:42 PM Very nice pics, John! Thanks for sharing.
That effigy of the President is really a work of art. :)
You can just imagine how many man-hours and artisits it took to do that....from planning, design and construcftion. Too bad, it was destined to be burned. But at least you were able to capture it for posterity.
In your second picture, it's really amazing to note that so many cameras were aimed at the effigy while it was being burned - DSLR cameras, point and shoot cameras, cellphone cameras and videocameras.
It seems that carrying a camera to these events is SOP as protest rallies and demonstrations have gone high-tech!:)

Yah, i've been to a rally once too... but i was there with no press ID so it took quite a while to mingle with the crowd. was also worried that somebody might kick me out for being there when im not really from the Press! hehee.... but how do we get one? from contacts?

i've been "cornered" once by rallyists (last year) and asked who i was shooting for.. they even checked out my shots. but i explained that i was doing it for school and they eased up and advised me to secure a press id so that i wouldn't be mistaken for a snitch. ever since then i never shot at these occasions without one.. regarding that i really don't know how.. mine was just issued by our school paper.. don't even bother try making up one (some actually do..) because you'll really get it when people who know find out.
Larry Monserate Piojo 07-26-2007, 09:51 AM shesh! that's sad! good thing they didnt do anything worst! well, i never planned on making up one, i want REAL one... something I can hold on to no matter what happens. btw, congrats on your entry for DPP issue 13! first time i saw it in the gallery, i knew it's gonna be selected! galing! galing!
dondirivera 07-26-2007, 04:01 PM @ john
great shots. you really capture the human face and militancy of the moment. I was also there at last monday's sona. As a member of the militant mass movement, pls let me share my comments from the inside looking out.
To answer your comment about why we ask photographers their IDs and to what outfit they belong to are for 3 reasons. (1) safety; we take great pains to ensure the safety of everyone attending our activities, even those who are not a member of our sectoral organizations (2) background; familiarity is the key word here. We've been doing this for years so we know every photog from the wires, broadsheets, down to the tabloid beat by name and face even without their press ids. We take time to get to know them personally because they are the ones we inform about our activities. If we see unfamiliar faces among the photogs, that's the moment we approach them and ask them who they are and what the pictures are for. This year's sona was actually the first time i've observed so many photogs who were there other than to report the news. (3) security; there have been several incidents in the past where situations turned violent because people we dont know threw something in the direction of the police line or were caught casing some of our members. times are difficult and we prioritize the need to exercise precaution in all instances. Some are kibitzers, some are there because they identify or sympathize with us, some just want to take photos and some, well let's just say some 'persons' do not deserve to be there.
Wear a press ID. A real one. its more dangerous if you're only there to take photos. this is especially true in the manila area where the manila police district-civil disturbance management units (the anti riot squads) do not take kindly to photogs especially when the situation turns tight or violent. note that most of them do not wear their name tags (which is illegal) and a few of them actually have their sidearms tucked inside their shirts or pockets (very dangerous and tantamount to dismissal+charges)
the police will not hesitate to manhandle you if they find out that A: you're not a member of any press outfit B: if you're not a member of one, they assume you're with us and that makes you fair game all the more and C: they do not want you or any other civilians taking pictures of them and rallies period. In these situations, the term 'manhandled' is an understatement. I could go on and on about this.
I have witnessed (and have experienced myself a number of times) a few instances where photogs not part of the manila photog beat were badly beaten and hauled in for questioning by the police simply for taking pictures. All this, apart from your gear getting damaged or worse. In once instance, a girl (a student from a university), was even forced to give her CF card when three cdmu's took hold of her in morayta after we were violently dispersed. I told her she was lucky. I agree with what john said; dont even think about making a fake press id because they will surely know. As what i've said earlier, familiarity is the key word here. Also because the police actually have their own plainclothes monitoring teams inside the buildings, perched on rooftops or on the sidelines covertly taking videos or pictures, apart from those trying to infiltrate our ranks. From our end, these are the kind of people we look out for and try to contain.
just like what Jose F Lacaba wrote in his highly personal account of the first quarter storm student upsurge in the 1970s detailed in his book, 'Days of Disquiet, Nights of Rage', i believe in the dictum that journalism, just like photojourn, is 'a hurrying of history'. Photography becomes the medium for personalizing the struggle with your own eyes; truth encapsulated in photographs. In this sense, all truths become ultimately personal. I always keep that in mind as a writer. For all those who want to take pictures, personally, i'd rather have everyone with their own cameras taking pictures of events because information becomes free but I strongly advise against it simply because no one will vouch for your safety.
just my two centavos worth.
Larry Monserate Piojo 07-26-2007, 05:04 PM That's a long and very informative statement, sir dondi. Thank you for that. I agree in every thing you said... This is one thing that stops me from going to such events... the last event i went to was during this year's labor day in mendiola. no big rallies happened there that day. I saw a lot of photographers with PRESS ID's, so it somehow made me think that i shouldn't have been there. So, I've been trying to find out how am i able to get a PRESS ID, considering im no member of any PRESS at all. So, do u have any advise or any suggestions for those photographers who wanted to take part (not just to take pictures, of course) and record a ground breaking history happening in the country? Or for those aspiring to become a photojournalist one day (count me in :D)... or do they really have to work for a news company in order for them to be on the spot in a 'safe' manner?
Franz A.D. Morales 07-26-2007, 06:36 PM @John: I was there at the SONA but arrived around 6, I was supposed to take photos of the barricades infront of the church but was shooed away, I was left with shots of the church instead:( I live in the village behind the church so I had easy access, but alas, no ID, no shoot...
dondirivera 07-26-2007, 08:43 PM @ larry
you can always go and take pictures of these events. that's always the ideal for me; people taking pictures of real events as they unfold. Its not a question of whether you're allowed to or not. Of course you can even if you're not a member of any particular press outfit. Thats how it should be. Everyone should take pictures, not just the mainstream media outfits. What i can't assure you of is your safety. If you get harrassed, arrested, hurt or your gear got damaged or confiscated, the buck stops with you. From our end, we cant argue with the police ground commander on your behalf because we have no idea who you are and what you're doing there to begin with. I'd like to see many people taking pictures in activities but i wouldnt know what advice and suggestions to give myself because i know all too well the consequences. The police do not differentiate between innocent bystander and protestor especially in really scary, out of control situations. The simplest suggestion i can give is stay as far as possible and be ready with a good telephoto lens.
Wearing a press id is no surefire way to safety either. there is no 'catch-all' safety procedures for these kind of events. edwin bacasmas of inquirer and bullit marquez of ap were with us in hong kong during the anti-wto world trade organization ministerial meeting two years ago. in one instance during the clash with hk riot police, korean protestors suddenly grabbed bullit's ladder and threw it at the police barricade while he was still standing in it taking his shots. press photogs shoot our activities all the time so from my end seeing how they manage to pull off shots in a hurry is something really excellent. its a mixture of safety and daring, i guess.
and by the way, no sirs for me:) i'm still learning the photography side of things too:Grin:

john_javellana 07-28-2007, 11:22 PM @dondi: wow thank you, your posts have been very informative. especially for us who are still starting out and are aspiring to be in a profession as such. i agree with you on your observation that this year's sona was where you saw the most photographers who were there other than to report the news. everywhere you look there was a person with a camera. and i believe that the numbers will increase dramatically. this is the reason why this kind of information is vital so to create awareness amongst those who would want to take their cameras to these events. maraming salamat for sharing this to us and i hope to bump into you soon! :)

thanks. its time to put relevance back into the dispassionate. that means moving beyond mere observer status and jumping in and being an advocate to affect change. photojourn shouldnt just be this detached medium that separates itself from your subject. the idea of objectivity is not a workable premise anyway. the safety concerns are there but there are very real consequences that each photographer will have to deal with in his/her own way. replied to your email:)

delfinotiongco 09-28-2007, 12:19 AM John,
Thanks for sharing. You have very dramatic photographs. Photojournalists aim to tell a story and your pictures captured that. I know the "game" has changed since our pre martial law days. But the role of photojournalist is still the same. BE in the middle of the EVENT. This is the reason that most of us have 35mm as normal lens. We want to be as close and invlove with the subject. Its gets to be nasty at times, but I do not take it personally. The photojournalist have a job to do and the officials i.e. policia has a job as well, "to make your life miserable". You have proven that you can be a "diplomat" when you weer able to take a photo of a pulis up close. Keep up the good work.

Btw, what ID no. are (if you dont mind)? Kasi I have friend who are com-arts students din. :)
drixeldevelos 11-05-2007, 12:26 AM These images were recently taken in the country's sugar bowl - Negros where sugarcane has been cultivated in the province since the middle of the 19th century. Negros Occidental produces over 1.279 million metric tons of sugar representing about 57% of the country's sugar production of 2.224 million metric tons (Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) data). One third of the province's agricultural land are occupied by sugar plantations.
For the next six months or so starting October, Negros will be in economic frenzy as the milling season (harvest) comes to a start. These are times when sugar barons reap their investments, thousands of sugar farm workers including the famous "sacadas" will now have sources of income. Between July and September (Tiempo's Muertos), it is the close of the milling season when everyone goes hungry so to speak.

This sugar worker earns around P 150-200 workind for more than eight hrs under either the sweltering heat of the sun or heavy rain. Yet, the Pinoy spirit still enables him to smile despite the heavy load. . .

john_javellana 11-05-2007, 07:11 PM Hi John, I'm from DLSU too and I think I've seen your works in Plaridel. I'm just wondering if the ID given to you by Plaridel gives you full access even to some private events like say, gigs, exhibits or concerts. I've always wanted to join Plaridel but my projects alone are killing me already. But seeing your works makes me want to join already.
Btw, what ID no. are (if you dont mind)? Kasi I have friend who are com-arts students din. :)
hey anne!
great to see a fellow dlsu student here! my ID passed for most coverages such as rallies, press cons, political events, street.. but it's definitely not for private events. those events usually require special permission from the organizers. they usually have a special ID for members of the media. it's one of those situations where good connections come in :)
try it out; it publishes twice a month only so i don't think you're pressure to produce photos everyday. i had a hectic schedule too but it never got in the way. i'm ID # 104 by the way :)
cheers!

A woman pays homage next to the tomb of his loved one inside a public cemetery in Makati's financial district of Manila during All Saints Day November 1, 2007. Millions of Filipinos visit the grave of their loved ones as a way to remember them in this predominantly Catholic country.

Many thanks John! Sunset, Sir. I posted this after seeing your "man struggles against the water" and getting moved so powerfully by it. Who will not?
