View Full Version : Call for Entries : DPP's 3rd year anniversary photo contest
Lloyd San Diego 06-19-2009, 06:00 PM Good news everyone,
We've decided to open a photo contest for the anniversary party. the contest is open to all DPP members.
there will be two (2) themes for the contest.
The first theme is Portraits and the second is Landscapes. each member is only allowed to submit a maximum of three (3) photos for both theme.
Submission of entries will be done by uploading your photos through the Photo Gallery section of this forum. An album for the photo contest will be created tonight at around 9pm. Submission of entries may start once the album is created.
Deadline of submission will be on Wednesday (06.24.2009) 10:00 AM.
Amazing prizes from the sponsors awaits the winners of this contest.
The contest winners will be announced on the night of the party.
Princess Jarlyn Young 06-19-2009, 06:02 PM Coolness!!!! Are mods DQ'ed? hihihi.
Lloyd San Diego 06-19-2009, 06:03 PM Coolness!!!! Are mods DQ'ed? hihihi.
yup... even the moderators can join...
Derick_Gamboa 06-19-2009, 06:07 PM Lloyd, Is there a way to submit entries w/o getting to identify the person submitting? There may be some wisdom in doing this so there would not be any bias, and the photo will be judge based on the photo merits. Let all entries be statistic numbers. Just a suggestion.
Lloyd San Diego 06-19-2009, 06:17 PM we've discussed your concerns and out off all the entries the top 20 photos will be selected by the 5 editors of DPP. Then the top 20 photos will be judged on the event by a different set of photographers that we invited specifically for the contest.
on a side note nino said : thanks for the concern and you don't have to be scared to show your name together with the photo.

Soooooo tagaaaaaaaal.... hehehehehehehehehe
Well, nice move DPP!!! This is exciting!!!!!
moiseslua 06-19-2009, 07:03 PM Should that read Wednesday (06.24.2009) 10:00 AM ?
Ryan Vibal 06-19-2009, 08:01 PM pwede sumali?hehehe mahaba pa yung time para maging creative and explore.are there any limitation on the photos submitted? like no editing of pics or something  kaka excite
Nick Tuason 06-19-2009, 08:11 PM Yes the date is Wednesday June 24. This may sound like a bit of a rush but we had to cancel our planned live shoot for this format because getting a permit to shoot in the area was taking too long.
There will be LIVE JUDGING of the top photos. The live judging will give photographers insight on what goes on a judges mind and the comments made will be priceless. It will be a must see for all so turn in those photos. There will be some prizes for the best shots but the winner in the end wins BRAGGING RIGHTS for one year......that itself is worth the price of admission.
All images will be printed by us courtesy of Canon. So start turning in those photos.
adrianrodriguez 06-19-2009, 09:15 PM will upload mine later :) (just came from a shoot @ work)
CocoyLopez 06-19-2009, 09:24 PM what portraits and landscapes? orientation po bang portrait/landscape?
tnx
I firmly believe its not the orientation in the lingo of photography :D :D.
Ardiel Ross Topacio 06-19-2009, 09:39 PM ..........
David Tong 06-19-2009, 10:13 PM Ardiel: English please.
Ardiel Ross Topacio 06-19-2009, 10:27 PM ..........
CocoyLopez 06-19-2009, 10:32 PM thats why im asking if its that... or is it portrait as to portraiture and landscapes as to sceneries..
yan lang po kasi nakalagay as for the theme... mejo vague kasi for me kaya nga nagtatanong eh..
Ok. It says "Portraits and Landscapes" and there was a confusion. If Lloyd was referring to an orientation then what type of photographs qualifies or falls for the THEME? Does it make any difference if I submit the same photograph but different ORIENTATION?
I highlighted "THEME" because it should not to be confused with ORIENTATION. :)
aldricharcilla 06-19-2009, 11:18 PM it's 11pm....is the album in the gallery ready?....im having a hard time finding it :(
Ardiel Ross Topacio 06-19-2009, 11:20 PM ..........
David Tong 06-19-2009, 11:26 PM Goodness, is that even worth bickering about?
BTW, please remove the for sale/swap link in your sig as well, Ardiel.
aldricharcilla 06-19-2009, 11:30 PM @ Ardiel - man I think that the TS (Lloyd) said the theme will be portraits and landscapes...he meant it as the genre rather than the orientation as he mentioned 'themes'....I don't think orientation matters..
also It maybe odd if the submitted photos will be judged per orientation? hope this helps :)
Ardiel Ross Topacio 06-19-2009, 11:41 PM ..........
CocoyLopez 06-19-2009, 11:42 PM @Ardiel,
To quote Lloyd:
Each member is only allowed to submit a maximum of three (3) photos for both theme.
If I will follow your syllogism, I can submit 3 same and exact photos but different orientation. Does this sound odd for a photo contest? :D
Just a clarification that I'm not an expert either. What I said as "I firmly believe..." simply mean I trust my guess :)
earl_choa 06-20-2009, 08:42 AM just for clarification, by portraits, does that mean that we are limited to studio portraits or fashion spreads, or human interest photos in general, photojourn type portraits (i.e. a portrait of a kid taken in the street, etc...)?
also are there limitations to the post prod?
@ardiel
what's with the "......." ?
ryandayrit 06-20-2009, 09:47 AM Hi Lloyd,
Sounds exciting. Are there any other guidelines that we need to take note of?
Are there any post processing techniques that need to be avoided, or are watermarks allowed?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Ryan

Hi Lloyd-
Just a suggestion.
The Theme Portraits and Landscapes are very broad. I think its much easier to the photo participants/judges if theres a specific Theme for Portraits and Landscapes..example - Photojourn-Portraits, Fashion/Glamour Portraits, Travel Portraits,Digi-Art Portraits etc. same with in Landscapes- Seascapes, Urban etc.
Or Portraits- "Black and White ", /"Emotions"/"Aging"
Landscapes- "Surreal", "Magic Light", "50/50"
In this way, we could avoid confusion in photo entries and judging.:)
Thanks,
Joel G.

+1 here.
I agree with Joel, for example, can a street portrait be judged equally with a fashion portrait, etc etc..
Lloyd San Diego 06-20-2009, 03:26 PM Wow.
ok just to clarify things.....
there are two themes (not orientation).
The first THEME is "Portraits". it is a very broad topic so your not limited to studio portraits or fashion spreads you can go as far as street/photojourn as long as the face and expression is predominant. You can submit any type of photo that falls under the theme.
same goes with the second theme (not orientation) "Landscapes". same as the first theme you can submit any photo that falls under or is classified as landscapes. so you have the different styles of landscape photography like seascape, nightscape, cityscape, etc...
as to post processing... there's no limitation.
harrysio 06-20-2009, 05:46 PM what is the size for the image? ppi?
Lloyd San Diego 06-20-2009, 05:56 PM what is the size for the image? ppi?
you can submit low res/web sized photos for the gallery. once your photo makes it through the top 20 photos we will send you a PM asking for the Hi-res files.
Romyr_Mariano 06-20-2009, 07:53 PM Wow! This should be exciting, let me see if I got some photos here..
GeraldBARIA 06-20-2009, 07:53 PM hihihi..I missed this yesterday..The orientation discussion was funny..
Grrr...to the portrait submitters..i think its safer to send a Street/Photojourn shot than a studio..there's no way us hobbyists can beat the experience and lighting set ups and model contacts of the pros here!hahaha.:)
To the landscapes...Hmmmm..those from the province have a really good shot here..:) What if I were in Mindanao, and I submitted a kick a$$ landscape shot and you chose it..but I couldnt come to the party coz I'm so poor and cant afford a plane ticket to manila..can I still get the prize? or will you send me a plane ticket?hehehe:)

Hahaha this made me laugh!:D You can afford a DSLR but can't afford a plane ticket?!:D The "so poor" is harsh...:D
And I may appreciate cityscape more than seascapes, others vice-versa, so I guess we all have equal chances of winning the landscapes category.:)
CocoyLopez 06-20-2009, 09:25 PM ...can I still get the prize? or will you send me a plane ticket?hehehe:)
@Gerald,
Nick said the prize for the winner is "one year bragging rights"! I don't know if that is convertible to cash :D
There will be some prizes for the best shots but the winner in the end wins BRAGGING RIGHTS for one year......that itself is worth the price of admission.

hi maan,
welcome to DPP. Please read our forum guidelines (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=3892) before posting.
thank you.
maandelupio 06-21-2009, 05:05 PM Oops! sorry, missed the Guidelines. think I violated Commandment II an IV. Sorry again:(, and Thanks for the reminder..
anyway, here's some questions: are all uploaded entries final? i mean, can i still change it or edit it before the deadline? and if my entry/entries qualified in the first elimination, can i still enhance/manipulate the photo for the live judging (eg. a little enhancement in the contrast, vibrance, cropping, etc.)?
If Canon will print the live judging entry, and we didnt approve the print out result (border merger issue, etc), can we submit prints of other photo processing lab?... hehehe! feeling winner. :-)
last one, will this be a part of the activity on the 27th in The Fort? thanks a lot!
Ryan Vibal 06-21-2009, 05:57 PM "one year bragging rights"! <<< ahehehe maybe your prize will be a sig ban.. saying >> "Mr./Ms. Bragging Rights of the 2009"
ReD Ognita 06-21-2009, 08:02 PM As Nick said, the live commentary will be priceless. I'd even go there if there's nothing else but the live judging.
Big deal 'to guys (at least for me) to hear what's in their heads. Not really to follow immediately but to ponder upon.
... with this note - I'll be submitting mine :)
Good luck to all!
domtamayo 06-21-2009, 10:20 PM Hi! Is it ok to include a watermark in the submitted entry? Will it affect the judging of the said picture? Thanks!
Princess Jarlyn Young 06-21-2009, 10:26 PM Hi! Is it ok to include a watermark in the submitted entry? Will it affect the judging of the said picture? Thanks!
I'd suggest not to put your watermark.
domtamayo 06-21-2009, 10:41 PM I'd suggest not to put your watermark.

+1 to Red Ognita.
To hear the comments of the judges is an honor. Considering also that you are in TOP 20 :)...
Uploaded mine. Waiting for approval...
Whew! This is my first time uploading photo in DPP photo gallery.
Also, this is my first time to join in a photo contest :) Just want to try...
Good luck to all of us!
PJEnriquez 06-22-2009, 08:11 AM Sorry. Might have missed it but what size should the Photo entries be and should they be HI-RES?
Thanks
Princess Jarlyn Young 06-22-2009, 08:25 AM you can submit low res/web sized photos for the gallery. once your photo makes it through the top 20 photos we will send you a PM asking for the Hi-res files.

cesagdeppa 06-22-2009, 01:47 PM The first theme is Portraits and the second is Landscapes. each member is only allowed to submit a maximum of three (3) photos for both theme.
what are the consequences if we submit three for landscape, and three more for portrait?
Aly_Reyes 06-22-2009, 01:54 PM what are the consequences if we submit three for landscape, and three more for portrait?
Ces, the consequences are that you have a higher chance of winning!!
Nick Tuason 06-22-2009, 02:49 PM Submit because we will be taking the best photos and doing a LIVE JUDGING to show everyone what goes through the mind of a photography judge. You will get great insight on photography just by attending the event and hearing the judges speak.
jhim_abucayon 06-22-2009, 04:05 PM hi... another questions here, is there any limitations to where we can shoot/take the photos? like for me, i am basing here in dubai... can i join the contest? or is it limited to P.I. only? thanks... more power guys...
GeraldBARIA 06-22-2009, 05:00 PM ... or is it limited to P.I. only?
P.I.?! Heeeeeyy..no need to curse at anyone here..hehehe Exactly what I was asking too. Is there a proximity limit to the members who can join? I know there members from the province here too and abroad..
delanoviktor 06-22-2009, 05:04 PM Can I submit photos taken using films? The photo was scanned and corrected (cropped, color, horizontal alignment) using PS.

Nick Tuason 06-22-2009, 05:08 PM All entries need to be digitized so film shots just need to be scanned.

jerrytieng 06-22-2009, 06:07 PM Jhim, YES you can join. The rules didn't stipulate any restrictions on subject's location, photographer's current location, and what not.
cathy.quiogue 06-22-2009, 06:09 PM to gerald and jhim,
you'll be getting an answer in a while... would just like to let you know that your questions are being attended to. :)

c^^,)
johnmanalastas 06-23-2009, 05:30 PM This is great! I will try to find some shots of mine that seems worthy enough to join this contest...
I hope though, that there was a different category for beginners other than that of the experts to isolate the masters from the boys/girls... surely newbies such as I are outclassed by the gurus...
Just some clarification... each member is only allowed to submit a maximum of 3 photos for each theme or both themes combined?

Hi Ms. Mae!
Thank you very much for your response.
Actually, that is what I was clarifying about. The statement could mean that only 3 photos are allowed for the 2 themes combined, or it could also mean that 3 photos are allowed for each theme... :)
From my understanding, we are allowed to sumbit 3 entries for each theme. I would just like to verify if I understood it correctly.
Thanks

You got it right, Dean. I'm not a Mod, but Lloyd clarified this to me. Only 3 photos, total ---- three of one and none of the other or two of one and one of the other. Not three each.
jerrytieng 06-23-2009, 10:19 PM 3 photos for both themes. not 3 photos for each theme. Mods, feel free to correct me if I got it wrong.:)
Yep, 3 for both means total of 3 only. Not 6 (or 3 each).

Thanks Dan, coz I'm seeing 3 posts for portrait and 3 more post for landscape all from one member. Got me confused. :)

Dean Ang 06-23-2009, 10:40 PM hi, i was trying to upload photos but i get "image pending approval" thumbnail. is this really the case or had i made a wrong uploading procedure?
Nope, you did nothing wrong, you successfully uploaded your photo and is currently "pending approval" of the DPP mods. You'll definitely see it tomorrow. :)

Do they need to specify their 3 final entries?

Dear Super Mod, I have PM'd you about my excess entry

PS. If you want to delete the entry just go to the photo you uploaded and edit it.. there is an option on the bottom (a check box) that you can choose then save so you would be able to get rid of your excess entries.

I already deleted my images in the landscape gallery.
Still awaiting for your approval for the portraits category.
Thanks and see you saturday!

Marton_Benitez 06-24-2009, 10:47 AM Mods, just read the ruling regarding 3 images total.
I already deleted my images in the landscape gallery.
Still awaiting for your approval for the portraits category.
Thanks and see you saturday!
It has been awhile. Looking forward to seeing the "older" DPP people.
Nice! :D Hope to see you sat Allan!
Long time man!

Sir your inbox is full.:(
maandelupio 06-24-2009, 12:10 PM My Bad! I thought it's 10pm. just finished uploading my entries, then when i read this thread again - the deadline is 10AM! nakakaiyak naman :-(
please please please? i really want to join. please please :-(
Lloyd San Diego 06-24-2009, 12:13 PM finally did the last batch of pending approvals and all the request to disregard their excess entries.
good luck to all.
nino_carandang 06-24-2009, 02:40 PM ok guys,
after a long debate on which photo goes to the finals, we have made our choice. in an hour our very own lloyd san diego will email you if your photo made it.
kindly send the high resolution photo IMMEDIATELY (by lunch tomorrow at maximum) as we need time to print it and display it for the anniversary.
all photos to be submitted are without WATERMARKS AND BORDERS.
thanks and good luck.
jerrytieng 06-24-2009, 03:02 PM Wow, that was quick!
jerrytieng 06-24-2009, 03:04 PM Nino, when you say high resolution, would it be best to just send you the raw file -OR- for you to declare the pixel dimensions so that the finalists can do their magic and send you the files properly sized and sharpened?
nino_carandang 06-24-2009, 03:06 PM Nino, when you say high resolution, would it be best to just send you the raw file -OR- for you to declare the pixel dimensions so that the finalists can do their magic and send you the files properly sized and sharpened?
The final edited file as you want it displayed and for live judging. High resolution meaning as big as you can.
Nick Tuason 06-24-2009, 03:11 PM Wait I don't want to receive 100MB files here guys. We are printing the images to Poster size, so 18 x 24 or thereabouts depending on your aspect ratio. The photos that we narrowed down will only be printed and will be displayed for the Live Judging part of our party.
Again, please look at your emails and we hope to receive those files asap.
Nino, can they send by email through YOU SEND IT?
jerrytieng 06-24-2009, 03:13 PM Got it Nino. Sorry to nitpick, this is probably a question for Nick's color management and printing class.
But isn't sharpening at one pixel dimension and then printing it at a different size not the ideal way to achieve optimal sharpness? Meaning, is it better to sharpen at the final pixel size one is printing?
For example:
Original size : 2000 x 3000 pixels
For 4R printing : resize/crop to 1200 x 1800 pixels then apply USM
For 20" x 30" printing : resize to 6000 x 9000 pixels then apply USM
Or should one upsize the 2000 x 3000 pixel files into 6000 x 9000 and then the printer downsizes it and do their thing? What's the ideal workflow?
Sorry, this is probably out of topic but I plan to steal the winning photo while everyone's dead drunk so the printing better be darn good. Hahaha
andrewdeleon 06-24-2009, 03:34 PM Good news everyone,
....Deadline of submission will be on Wednesday (06.24.2009) 10:00 AM.
Amazing prizes from the sponsors awaits the winners of this contest.
The contest winners will be announced on the night of the party.
Hi Everyone,
I have seen this thread just now and unfortunately I was 6 hours late for the deadline. Anyway, I still uploaded my entries to the gallery and I hope my entries are still valid. But if it's not qualified, it's ok, I'll keep looking for contests in the future.
More power to DPP and congratulations for it's 3rd Year Anniversary!
Regards,
Andrew

Yah.. we should be there tomorrow...I wana be there, but too bad for me, I wont be able to make it... :( We have a race at Montalban.. If only I could be at 2 places at one time... I'd be there. I hope the event will have a video coverage especially for the lecture and demo part, so the unfortunate ones like me could have a chance to see it too.

I don't know if Junie was referring to my post, but here it is :
...I hope though, that there was a different category for beginners other than that of the experts to isolate the masters from the boys/girls... surely newbies such as I are outclassed by the gurus...
