Dear DPP Members,

DPP has partnered again with Caltex to bring you the sixth installment of our uber-popular On Assignment series. The sixth On Assignment (OA6) requires outdoor photographers to brave the strong winds and waves Ilocos and climb the mountains of Tuguegarao.

The NEW MISSION:

1. To join the MTV Philippines led by either VJ Andi Manzano [confirmed] in a caravan traveling around Norther Luzon. We will be part of their show that will be airing in a later date.

2. To photograph the historical sites of around Ilocos region.

3. To brave the wind and waves of Pagudpud and create jaw-dropping seascapes as well as photograph the colossal windmills of Bangui.

4. To trek to Tuguegarao and photograph 11-hectare rolling hills of Iguig Calvary Hills and massive limestone chambers of Callao Caves.

Dates: TBA on DPP Anniversary Party on June 27

As always, DPP will be pre-selecting one or two team leaders for this trip. This means we may choose up to 10 members from this Forum to go on the trip.

The trip will start on a weekday (Thursday to Sunday) so for those of you who work, you will have to file for a leave, or call in sick - but there will be evidence that you were somewhere else. Only put your name on this list if you are 100% certain you can make it. Because if we choose you and you suddenly back out, the On Assignment will be compromised.

This thread will only be open until June 25, 2009.

As always, to all our members who want to go ON ASSIGNMENT with DPP let us know why you want to take up this challenge.

Hi Rj,

All you need to do is convince DPP and the sponsors through your killer pitch/speech. Tell them anything why they would choose you, why they should let you be part of the OA6 Team, the most convincing pitch wins the slot!

- Old churches in Tuguegarao
- Oldest bell in the Phils (located in Camalaniugan)
- Mororan falls near Callao Caves
- Hanging bridge in Magapit (small version of Golden Gate)
- Bailey bridges (there are anumber still surviving)
- Sugar cane vistas in Solana-Piat area

On the way back to Manila (assuming via road through Isabela), perhaps the team can do early morning jaw-dropping shots of the mighty Cagayan River an the ricefields in Roxas, Isabela. Landscape shots from the mountains (two winding mountain roads to pass through). Along the way, there are lots of others photo themes and subjects.

Just like to share what i heard in the grapevine....

One key component of the Team composition is DIVERSITY - meaning it will be a healthy dose of experienced shooters, young wannabes with the right attitude, good writers (they really consider the pitch:D), nice mix of boys-girls ratio, a cool-spread on the type of shooter (landscape/Street Journ/Portrait/Fashion/Sport) and a CALTEX-user would be a definite plus!

I may be a computer geek by profession, but a photographer by passion

I may not have the talents of being a hardcore portraitist, or landscapist. But I have the RAW energy, the ENTHUSIASM and BURNING PASSION to join, to learn, to discover new things. This IS the point of OA trip right?

While I used to work (consultant) to a rival gas company before (yup), I've been tanking up on Caltex (Sayang ang Miles! :))

And why not bring a landscape -SLASH- concert photographer (look here), since we have a band along for the trip. Who knows what gig the band might play on along the road?

We did this last year (Isabela/Cagayan Churches-San Pablo/Piat/Tumauini etc. -Callao Caves-Tugegarao swordsmith-Iguig Pottery-Calvary Hills-Palaui/Croc Island-Aparri-Pagudpud-Patapat-Bangui Windmills-Cape Bojeador Lighthouse-Vigan/Bantay-La Union surfing). Include Paoay Church-Sand Dunes-Kapurpurawan White Rock-Currimao Beaches-Sta Maria Church and you pretty covered all the tourism sites and UNESCO heritage churches of the north already. More than 1800 kms of road, reach the northernmost part of Phil. highway and circumnavigate the whole of Northern Luzon through the Maharlika Highway.

I want to pursue this challenge because I want to be fuel up full tank of new travel experiences and feel how it’s like to be a part of DPP- CALTEX On Assigment.

I believe I could be an inspiration to new photographers who will participate in this On Assignment; I want to teach and share some of what I’ve learned during my short but colorful photography life, if given a chance.

Through this, “We” as a TEAM could deliver a much better set of images to DPP and Caltex.

Im a flexible shooter i could fit in any type of genre in Photography -

STREET/PHOTOJOURN- i would like to capture Ilocos and Tugegarao culture, its people in different perspective & creative way.

LANDSCAPES- For me, i prefer to shoot Landscapes and Seascapes that have human elements on it, i shoot also landscapes rocks, foamy waters and more.

PORTRAITURE/FASHION- I would like to shoot ambient and at the same time do some Strobist studio set up, complete with Lightstands,Umbrellas, Reflectors, and Gels. Im planning to shoot the DPP- Caltex Participants a portrait of each individuals using a couple of speedlight set ups with Lightstands and Umbrellas and with these small flash guns i could apply it in every appropriate shooting settings of the team.

I want to pursue this challenge because I want to be fuel up full tank of new travel experiences and feel how it’s like to be a part of DPP- CALTEX On Assigment.

I believe I could be an inspiration to new photographers who will participate in this On Assignment; I want to teach and share some of what I’ve learned during my short but colorful photography life, if given a chance.

Through this, “We” as a TEAM could deliver a much better set of images to DPP and Caltex.

Im a flexible shooter i could fit in any type of genre in Photography -

STREET/PHOTOJOURN- i would like to capture Ilocos and Tugegarao culture, its people in different perspective & creative way.

LANDSCAPES- For me, i prefer to shoot Landscapes and Seascapes that have human elements on it, i shoot more than a landscapes rocks and foamy waters.

PORTRAITURE/FASHION- I would like to shoot ambient and at the same time do some Strobist studio set up, complete with Lightstands,Umbrellas, Reflectors, and Gels. Im planning to shoot the DPP- Caltex Participants a portrait of each individuals using a couple of speedlight set ups with Lightstands and Umbrellas and with these small flash guns i could apply it in every appropriate shooting settings of the team.

Why?

ORIGINALITY... LAYOUT is great it speaks for itself...no bragging nor begging and the photos are truly defying the dynamic range...mon has always managed to surprise me in terms of composition...i think he'll be a great addition to the team of OA6.

Lead? Thanks for the vote of confidence, but if the trip turns out the way as shown in Mitz's post, I am very familiar with only half of the route (Cagayan - Isabela - Nueva Vizcaya - Nueva Ecija - Bulacan). The other half, I am not very intimate with, though I've been there.

I really don't know if I'm qualified (even as a mere member), as I know there are gazillions more of DPPers out there who are more qualified (in many respects). At any rate, I trust in the judgment of the organizers (as they've consistently shown in past OA team member selections). It would be great to be chosen and, if that happens, I will personally deem this journey my "Northern Quest". Let's see how this will turn out to be, taking one step at a time.

Porter= he can carry a cavan of rice together with 2 bodies and L lenses.

Translator= he's a true blooded Ilocano. He knows the deepest dialect of the north

2nd - I don't want to be pressured by my peers and fellow photographers to create good photographs. I hate challenges.

3rd - I would not subject my body to extreme physical conditions just to create a good photograph. (e.g. trekking 11 hectares of rolling hills, brave the wind & waves and climb mountains)

4th - I would rather stay home on a weekend to watch TV, go online and eat chips rather than taking an outdoor trip. (Yes, that's my definition of having fun)

5th - I don't want to spend money buying new gears because of this trip

6th - It wouldn't be a nice addition to my newbie portfolio (http://theadebexperience.multiply.com/)

7th - I don't want to join VJ Andi Manzano on a road trip

8th - I don't want to go on a road trip with a Band.

9th - I don't like to shoot for the Reds, Whites, Blues and a Yellow. (like these two logos below)

One key component of the Team composition is DIVERSITY - meaning it will be a healthy dose of experienced shooters, young wannabes with the right attitude, good writers (they really consider the pitch:D), nice mix of boys-girls ratio, a cool-spread on the type of shooter (landscape/Street Journ/Portrait/Fashion/Sport) and a CALTEX-user would be a definite plus!:)

Here’s my pitch:


Here are my reasons why DPP, CALTEX and MTV need to choose me..



1. I love DPP so much…
that one time, I accidentally injured 5-6 persons just to get a copy of DPP magazine. :( You can read the whole story here: http://jaykun.multiply.com/journal/item/24/For_the_love_of_DPP_magazine

I find DPP magazine very informative and a lot of photographers here are sharing their knowledge unselfishly like Sir Randall (in IR photography) and Sir Jay Jallorina (in nature and landscapes).


2. I’m Creative…
Having photography in my life for only a year doesn’t stop me from capturing this images…

3. I can easily Adjust to different situations...

I'm flexible and can adapt to different situations whether it is Landscape, Photojournalism, Portrait, etc..



4. As I said in my previous OA-5 pitch, I’m very frustrated to take various Landscapes not only here in Manila but outside of it.


5. I’m very Thirsty and Eager to be a part of this team.


After eliminated from selection of O.A. 5 team, I waited so long for this On Assignment to come, that I dreamed of it 2 days ago. :Grin:

I believe that this On Assignment 6.0 is my chance to explore more in this addictive photography.

6. I’m willing to sacrifice my 4 days of work just to be with this Xtreme photographers. 4 days of no pay from work is nothing compared to the experience and lessons this trip will offer.

7.Lastly, no other music channel I listen to but MTV. Must Tune your Vision to this channel.


If GOD, DPP, Caltex, and MTV select me as one of the photographers, I'll document this project with all knowledge and experience I have, and will produce great outputs, and will not be a burden to other photographers.

Having said all of these, I, Engr. Ronald Jay Mayuga is ready for this On Assignment 6.0 expedition..

I trekked Mt.Pinatubo with a very very bad stomach, and yet I made it. I can do anything after that gruelling days... OA4 members know that... guys I need your support.:)

All I am saying here is if given the chance, I would love to join the team. And I am in 100% tip-top shape now. I am a serious photographer, my confidence level has gone up (not too much though). I am one of the most travelled photographers here.

As an Architect, the northern part of the Philippines is a favorite Architecture-Photography playground of mine for it possesses the best historical structures and sites that can be found here in our country. With an Architect’s perspective and a Photographer’s eye, equal a perfect combination and a unique approach of capturing photos structurally and photographically. Plus with my sufficient knowledge in the History of Architecture (my favorite subject in college aside from Design), I believe it’s an added asset for this mission.:)

Photography. I’ve been into the hobby for almost 2 years now and it is the only hobby in the world that made me think twice of shifting careers. There is just something about Photography that captures me, the way I capture pictures with my camera. Maybe it’s because of my love for nature and landscape, or my sentimentality as a person, wanting to capture every special moment and store it in my very own time capsule. I am a self-confessed addict when it comes to roadtrips and the outdoors that almost all of my earnings are spent for travel. I’ve been trying my luck in the lottery and if I win, obviously apart from building my empire, most of the dineros will be allotted for charity, I mean more roadtrips, ha!

I am also a frustrated contestant of the reality shows Survivor and The Amazing Race. I am up for any challenge that will be given to me, whether it is sky diving, mountaineering, you name it, and I am up for it! Huwag lang kumain ng ipis, ha!:D

Please allow me to tell you why I should be in this trip.

-I'm basically a newbie in this forum but I have started photography more than two years ago.

-I may not have the latest gear but I know how to maximize my assets.

-I may not have the best experience when it comes to photography, But I know how to be "ME." :)

-To share unto others the beauty of the world through my lens, that is my mission.

-If fate permits me to be given a chance to share my view to the world, I will face this challenge to best of my abilities, sacrifice time away from my 6month old baby, with permission of course from thy Commander In Chief. :Evil:

-Together with my HSBC card and all the Caltex Stations along the way, I am sure I will survive this trip and come up with extraordinary photos unique from the rest. :Dum:

-And with all the learnings from my DPP bibles, I am more than capable to handle myself in this trip.

-Best of all, I own a Chinese Drugstore, so if any tummy aches, head aches, body aches,
EXCEPT Heart Aches, I am sure to bring a remedy or two for the whole team. :D

-And Lastly, I haven't been to LUZON other than METRO MANILA, So as the saying goes, You see things differently with a FRESH PAIR of EYES plus a Lens. :Grin:

The OA4 is one of the best experiences in my life. Guys, if ever you were to be chosen to be part of this, then get yourselves ready for the adventure of a lifetime. The bonding and camaraderie in these kind of trips are trully amazing.

Here's the pitch:

In our OA4 trip, we all knew i was sick till the third day when we were about to leave for Baguio. I was not in 100% condition but I still made it. I endured the pain all the while... I trekked Mt.Pinatubo with a very very bad stomach, and yet I made it. I can do anything after that gruelling days... OA4 members know that... guys I need your support.:)

All I am saying here is if given the chance, I would love to join the team. And I am in 100% tip-top shape now. I am a serious photographer, my confidence level has gone up (not too much though). I am one of the most travelled photographers here.

I dont have any fancy banners, like my friends here... Sorry guys... But still, I have 100% pure power, pure passion, and pure fun.

I climb mountains, explore our country on a budget backpacking, photography fan, music lover and write my own travel blog.

This On Assignment 6 will be a great addition to the list of my travel experience. I will post the photos and stories of OA6 to my travel blog to help promote the place and give thanks to DPP, Caltex & MTV. I don’t have leave credits yet but I can file a sick leave like what I did when I climbed Mt. Apo two months ago. :)

Lastly, there will be a band joining the team. I want to re-enact the scene on my favorite movie Almost Famous where the band and the crew sings Tiny Dancer. :D

I want to pursue this challenge because I want to be fuel up full tank of new travel experiences and feel how it’s like to be a part of DPP- CALTEX On Assigment.

I believe I could be an inspiration to new photographers who will participate in this On Assignment; I want to teach and share some of what I’ve learned during my short but colorful photography life, if given a chance.

Through this, “We” as a TEAM could deliver a much better set of images to DPP and Caltex.

Im a flexible shooter i could fit in any type of genre in Photography -

STREET/PHOTOJOURN- i would like to capture Ilocos and Tugegarao culture, its people in different perspective & creative way.

LANDSCAPES- For me, i prefer to shoot Landscapes and Seascapes that have human elements on it, i shoot also landscapes rocks, foamy waters and more.

PORTRAITURE/FASHION- I would like to shoot ambient and at the same time do some Strobist studio set up, complete with Lightstands,Umbrellas, Reflectors, and Gels. Im planning to shoot the DPP- Caltex Participants a portrait of each individuals using a couple of speedlight set ups with Lightstands and Umbrellas and with these small flash guns i could apply it in every appropriate shooting settings of the team.

On Assignment 6 pitch starts now….
I have the Gears. I have lenses for landscape and portrait photography including tripod, filters, flashes, reflectors, etc.
I have the Experience. I have been shooting for almost 3 years now, been to all sorts of photoshoots. In fact, most of the guys here I have once or few times had gone on a shoot with. :Grin:
I have the Time. My schedule is still spotless clean or will be cleared if necessary so I’m ready whenever the OA may be.
I have the Passion. If know me then you would know the lengths that I would go through just to get the shot that I want.
I have the Diversity. If you would look at my gallery *Multiply or Deviantart* . It is made different kinds of photography ranging from landscape, portraits, cosplays, events and conceptual shots. I firmly believe that everything I said above is true but one man’s words can only go so far so little… and so I thought I should bring my friends and families with me on this pitch for some support….
